In the early days on BBT, he said he prefers more dramatic roles. He wasn't sure how long he would be able to stay in a comedic role since he didn't want to be known for that. I am glad to see him getting more roles that show what an incredible actor he really is.

I can fully relate with that little boy as my son had a lot of difficulties understanding why he couldn't play dress up or wear my scarfs as skirt or my shoes . He was crazy about his sisters barbies and played with them way more than my daughter. He used to dress his stuff bears too. I told him that he was allowed to do what ever he wanted and be who ever he wanted to be as long as he was happy. Now he is 11 , do not play any boys sports nor boys game apart from athletics. HE is an avid reader, paint and draws beautifully and he is extremely smart and witty... Can't wait to see what he will turn out to be... Very exciting!!!

When my sister was an intern in kindergarden years ago there was a little boy who dressed up as a princess. No one cared. Everyone told him he looked beautiful. People need to stop making such a big deal out of something so simple as clothes. Wear what you want, what makes you feel comfortable and confident. It doesn't matter what color it is or if it's pants or a dress. Let kids wear what they want and play with what they want and watch what they want (all age appropriate of course) and you will have happy beautiful children who grow into happy beautiful confident adults.

Here's the thing, not every kindergarten or even the society is open-minded and accepting to this kind of matter, especially in conservative, religious countries and third-world countries such as here in the Philippines for example, people will give a damn and the child will surely be reprimanded and ridiculed, I am not against self expression and gender appropriation, I'm just saying that this is a big deal and people should be aware.

I really hope they show both sides of this and leave it open to interpretation instead of trying to brow beat parents into raising their children “a certain way”. Let them explore, let them be curious. Play is how they learn and they emulate what they see. Don’t look at a kid like Jake and assume he *must* be gay or have dysphoria or that he *cant* later be revealed as either. Just let his childhood be his own. The world would be a better place if both sides understood this.

TurnipTwister 123 With all due respect, I disagree. Growing up I was a bit of a tomboy. I preferred jeans to dresses (still do) I played with barbies and ninja turtles. I watched sailor moon and dragon ball z. No one ever told me “these are boy things” or “little girls shouldn’t do that,” and no one ever needed to. I *knew* what I was, without question. I was a little girl who grew up to be, by all accounts, a damn good mother! So I choose to take your input with the grain of salt it deserves. Have a happy holiday.

Wow! As an avid TBBT fan, I've always seen Jim Parsons as gawky and genius Sheldon Cooper, as his roles rarely differ, but this, playing the role of a protective and concerned father is something so out of the box for him. Can't wait for the Australian release.
Seeing jim Parsons playing this role makes me respect him more.. these kinds of story is very rare to see cause it focuses on the mentality of the society.. hats off for making these kind of movie.
This actually looks good! Not overly preachy or judgey which might get your hackles up even if you do agree with the core principals. It just looks like any old 'finding yourself and each other' movie, not one that pushes the agenda so that the only people that watch are ones who don't need to open their minds anyway. Idk if that makes sense but i just like that it's seemingly going to approach the issue with a sense of normalcy, like it's any other parenting issue.

Boys used to wear dresses years ago because it was fashion. People think because a boy plays with "girl toys" then they will turn out gay that is not the case. Alot of boys used to play with girl toys & a lot of girls played with boy toys. People need to grow up and even if your son or daughter turns out gay it is not the end of the world they will turn out gay even if they don't play with girl toys or boy toys.

I think this is the first film I’ve ever heard of that truly delves into real issues surrounding gender identity. Great step in the right direction
When I was a kid, I would watch and play with anything. Hot Wheels, Barbie, you name it. I hope this movie talks about this issue in an accurate, mature way instead of that Lifetime crap.

So incredible to see the LGBTQ community represented in such a different light! From my experiences with gender neutral/fluid or transgender people, they often have felt out of touch since this age, maybe slightly older. It’ll be amazing to educate those who are confused, and even more amazing for those of the spectrum who are at their wits end with their gender, and how it’s deemed unacceptable for people to express themselves because of social norms. So excited to see it!

I work in a daycare and I once had a little boy(2) who loved to dress up....not just girls but just dress up in general and one afternoon his mom came in while he was wearing a dress and freaked out telling us he was not allowed to wear dresses even when playing. We tried to explain to her it was just play but she was so sure dad would freak that she was completely against it

This made me sob. Total ugly cry. We are going through the exact same story right now with our son. We love him for exactly who is. Are we pushing him because we do buy him tutus and princess stuff, but also if we don’t and stop doing that are we stiflingly who he is and not being supportive?? All you want for your children is health, love, and happiness.

Unpopular opinion: i dont believe in letting kids be how they want to be. They are children. They are starting to learn about the world. I think it is up to the parents to be good role models for the children to emulate. I have observed that some parents are afraid to be parents and just want to be their kid's friends. Growing up, I remember feeling confident in the choices I make because I have good parents who talk to me and guide me. They set boundaries and tell me from what right is wrong.
To each is own though. I just prefer raising my kids like how I was raise. You guide and direct them and once they are old enough to make decisions, you encourage them to do so.
I love that this movie was made. So current.

Really don't understand the 'negative' comments. The movie isn't about forcing the kid to act 'accordingly'. Moreover, he wasn't even a character in the original play script. It's more or less about what the parents are going through and how they're handling it. It is an issue that a lot of parents do face. I kind of recommend people to watch the press interviews. It helps to formulate a rough idea about the movie. The film got really good reviews at Sundance. It has a powerfully written script with great cast. So would be nice if people stop presuming things.

I have trouble imagining Jim Parsons and Claire Danes as a couple with the right chemistry, but I guess they're good enough actors to create it. The problem is they've both been starring in their respective current TV series for far too long and it's so difficult to dissociate them from their TV characters' personalities... though if you think about it Sheldon and Carrie share quite a few behavioural/psychological traits (control freaks, obsessive-compulsive, neurotic) so it's actually only the different genres that make us perceive them as incompatible.

I love this. My little sister is like that. When she was six she cut her hair and made us call her Zack for 5 months. She's 11 now, almost 12, she wears boys clothes and has her hair cut short. We're waiting until she's a little older and then we're gonna go get her diagnosed with gender dysphoria and start the whole process id changing everything we know about her, but we're up for it

When I was young I played with all boys toys and my favourite colour was blue and I hated pink even though I am a girl and I am straight. What I’m trying to say is it is very normal for kids to go against their expected “stereotypes” as they grow up and explore themselves. However, as parents you shouldn’t force anything on your kids and you should let them figure out their identity. If they truly believe they should have been born the other gender then they can get a sex change (doesn’t matter other people’s opinions because it doesn’t concern them) or they can accept themselves and live with the way they are. I don’t think other people should get to judge people for their decisions regarding their identity.
At first I let my knowledge of Jim Parsons give me pause and then I saw the intelligence in the casting. I'd like to see this movie.

As a child I used to play with both cars and barbies. I loved superman and Belle. My favorite hero was Rick O'Connell from the Mummy Franchise and I wanted to be a badass archeologist. One day I dressed up as a princess, the other day I was a business man. Why do we have to negate everything we are with labels. We do not have to be something. Putting people into categories is the worst thing you can do. The world is not just black and white. It is colorful. But even the most colorful world has its rules. Where are we at now?
