Back in 1977 my First Grader had a test in subtraction. The questions were like this: 6-2 = (Correct answer 4); 7-4 = 3. etc. etc. However, one question plainly said 2 - 4 = (TWO MINUS FOUR equals ??) So my Smart-ass kid wrote 2 - 4 = minus 2. He got the question WRONG!! He wasn't allowed to get a "100". The correct answer was to leave it blank since the kids weren't supposed to know that yet! Kids that left it blank got a "HUNDRED" on the test. Kids that wrote 2 -4 = MINUS 2 could NOT get a HUNDRED. I (the mother) could NOT convince the teacher that 2 - 4 = MINUS TWO. And this happened 48 years ago.
What's really sad is that this video wasn't far off from reality. I've had students curse me out. The parents claimed that their child was exercising his right to free speech. I've seen students commit acts of vandalism only to be told that I must be mistaken because their child would never do anything like that. I was once physically assaulted by a student. The parents claimed that I must have provoked their child. In all of these cases, I received no support from my building administration.
I see lot of comments "why she said 22k and not 20.002.000$", but I didn't see anyone analysing the sense of that scene. Teacher doesn't care about how much money she may get, but about the chance to finally knock that ridiculous giant out of balance, after all the dismissive treatment and lash out she had to face **alone**. And no matter the attacks on her persona, she stood her ground about math, because she knows it's true. Comeback works best when served simple and straight to point. "22 thousands" is short and clear to understand, because "twenty-two" -> "twenty-two thousand". Is she said "20 millions, 2 thousand dollars", people would just think it's random ramble, they would assume Teacher is greedy (after all the false assumptions they pulled in the video, that's highly possible), they would not get the message. That's why this comeback is so brilliant - finally able to defend math and herself :)

You misunderstood the ending. In the end, she gave up and adopted "alternative math" to have more money. This is what most of the scientific world has been doing for years which will support any nonsense for money.
You are comparing apples with oranges in many cases. If you are talking about maths, yes, there are some immutable laws. However, if you are talking about all these so-called "experts" predicting economic meltdown in the event of a vote for Brexit back in 2016 who were making these wild predictions based on possible business and psychological responses to the different legislative environment as if they were immutable laws, well come on, surely you must understand why we are mistrusting the "expert class"? If one is an "expert", one should be careful to clarify the limits of what one is able to accurately predict with substantially more accuracy than a layman, even with expertise in the subject. If you can't predict outcomes any more accurately than a layman, don't go round saying, "I'm an expert, dontchya know?!" to back up predictions that are just wild speculation.

This happened to me. Standing in a 7th grade classroom cutting out construction paper letters for a bulletin board, I told student a student that I was ready to call his parents because he constantly interrupted me. I had scissors in my hand when I said this. The next morning, the principal came to my room and asked if I threatened a student with scissors. My shock was immense. I couldn't even remember cutting out the letters because I was so shocked. That afternoon the student's father and mother were ushered into my room by the assistant principal who sat there for a full 2 hours while the man threatened my job, called me vulgar names, I can't even remember. Over and over he screamed at me. I was visibly pregnant. Today, I would stand up, tell the principal to stop it, and if it didn't, I'd quit. It was horrible. I sobbed for hours. My husband made me go back to school the next day telling me if I didn't, he would win. I stayed for the insurance. After my child was born and maternity leave was up, I called them up and quit. Never went back into a classroom. And just so you know, on my evaluation for that year, the assistant principal said I was exemplary and hoped that I would never stop teaching.
Sorry you had such a horrible experience. I was lucky to have far more positive experiences than negative ones in my teaching career, but still happy that I retired early. It's a shame that a situation with one student can discourage a competent teacher from continuing; so many other students lose out when this happens.

As a teacher this is genuinely hard to watch, so many helicopter parents get defensive over their children and you become the bad guy for doing your job...

I wouldn't matter. They would just say they don't interpret, or see it that way. They will always frame everything in a way where they win and she loses. Once you start this game, and you can make things mean what you want, then communication breaks down, and there's no more agreement on what anything means, so you have chaos. Everything becomes "democratic" in the worst possible way. You start voting on what words mean, but you can vote again tomorrow after you made a promise today, so you don't have to keep it. It makes me mad because one of my favourite and knowledgeable teachers quit because one of the student's parents harassed him for the student failing, even though the student failed to attend to class, and therefore, it showed in his grades. There's definitely a line that needs to be drawn and I think this short film is excellent at showing that a student's grades shouldn't depend on how aggressive their parents are.
There are so many metaphors in this film. Some of which are: People in today’s society are offended too easily. Some things aren’t up to debate despite how much people want to argue. In contrast to the previous point, people are losing their ability to think freely due to the influx of media, phones and distractions etc. The teacher is being treated as an outcast for being different. It plays on the whole “alternative facts” phrase Donald Trump was throwing around. The media can blow things way out of proportion on a whim. A very clever little film.

No kidding. Those kids grew up and became part of society. I once told one of my colleagues, who had completely messed up some accounting calculations, that her numbers were wrong and needed to be checked again. She yelled at me and immediately called HR, claiming that I had used very aggressive language by saying 'wrong' to her. I only said that very aggressive word "wrong" once during the conversation and once in an email. Thankfully, HR didn’t take her claims seriously, but that experience was quite traumatizing.
Some years ago I would find this movie funny - but now its rather terrifying, as the world is becoming to look exactly like that. The ending - awesome :D

I’m a first grade teacher just like this teacher and I can say without exaggeration that these parents DO exist. Principals DO talk to you like this. You do your job correctly fearing the fact that one offended kid or parent can send you packing is REAL.
Yes, as a former teacher I can attest to this. Of course this is an over-exaggeration, made to be humorous, so it is over the top. But it does, sadly, have some basis in reality. And it is a liberal problem; I have simply never had conservative parents storm in and aggressively demand to know why their student's grades are low.

@@themissgpg Oh no, I mean that I have had parents/admin/other teachers argue about some very basic stuff. My first year at this one school, I had a fellow teacher (who teaches third grade including math) argue that we shouldn't have too much change to start our fund raiser because we wouldn't make as much profit when we had to pay it back. I tried to explain that that is not how change works and we needed more or we would run out. She got mad and pulled the but that's what we always do card. I had to bite my tongue really hard when another teacher pointed out that they ran out of change the previous year.
As a former teacher the only unrealistic part is the protest and keeping her job until then. I was told not to correct grammar in english class, instead told to change my grading based on their background. they wanted me to take students i perceived as black and hold them to a lower standard. i told them that's called discrimination. this was a community college.

The herd is being led by the nose and being trained to accept anything they are force fed. Those that disagree will be outcast. We have a situation where all of the 600 or so world corporations own a portion of each other's company. They have more leverage than the superpowers. Above them is one or two organizations who want united interest of all world monetary matters, risk prevention and united guarantee that has no national borders. Who would or could challenge them. Only nature can do that if weather patters chage drastically enough to close all the worlds ports.

Now students are a necessary inconvenience in many schools, especially inner city schools. I see the main point in the title, which is a play on the novel idea in our current political world that proven lies are not lies, but “alternative facts.” The piece slams the current atmosphere of anti-intellectualism (“You think you’re an expert, and that I should pay attention to you and your peers, just because you’re all smart and have devoted your lives to this topic?”). There’s also a healthy slam on parents who can’t admit their little Johnny made a mistake, and what teachers have to put up with these days.
Plus the idea that a single person can have his/her life ruined because the masses are against him/her regardless who's right/wrong. Schools, Colleges and Corporations would rather terminate trouble makers rather than face backlash (regardless of the situation).

Numbers wrriten on paper don't mean anything, which is why I don't like the movie. If it was more of a stem focused thing I think it woild turn out well. I got the impression that this short film was attempting to inform us on a subject unrelated to the mathematical issue at hand. But I'm confident that the general audience saw it in their own typical way. It dealt with people's ignorance and unwillingness to question what they had been taught and delve into the truth, which nearly always turns into an abstract idea for people because of their inability to see past the obvious and recognise the subtle signs of reality. The teacher in the film hails from a time when manipulation was less common, and because of her own long years of education and exposure to the real world, she has unfiltered insight to share. The parents of the child standing up for their son struck me as a reflection of reality, considering that these parents' knowledge is distorted, to begin with. They haven't learned from their past mistakes. Even when children don't pay attention to their parents, they do imitate them. The child responded to the teacher in this manner for that reason. The kid developed sensitivity for things other than what is generally accepted to be right. The kid refuses to believe when the teacher says "everybody makes mistakes." She provides him with convincing examples, but the little boy is unable to understand what she is attempting to convey since he also believes that the reality is what the "majority" says it is. When the teacher meets the child's parents, they make fun of her and label her as narcissistic in the most famous way just because of her sincere efforts to instruct the child in the proper way. The parents are so delusional; they don't believe in the absolute truth either, but they nevertheless regard themselves and their child as free thinkers. I perceived the principal of the school as one of the perpetrators trying to exploit developing children in his own line of business. A few moments before the last scene, when the principal distributes money to satisfy an obligation, he does so in the proper quantity and according to the correct calculations because he is aware of the truth, but he doesn't want everyone to be aware of genuine information and knowledge. And in the end, the teacher gives another blatantly incorrect mathematical answer when the principal takes out the right monetary amount. There, she is essentially making fun of the system, the administrators in charge of it, and the people who collectively and mindlessly believe everything these officials say.
Yeah, there's two layers : - First, the obvious alternative facts, anti-intellectualist crowd (US far right) First-and-a-half, *that crowd* is persuaded to be the intellectual by maintaining an openminded/debate charade, when they actually have no idea of common sense methods to derive a truth. The debate IS the point of the debate, and not to find knowledge at the end of the debate. They give the impression of being like Newton, people always questionning their world... but unable to find anything because guess what, intellectuals already found the correct answers so you either have to copy or get the wrong ones. - Second, the school doesn't care as long both sides are happy The intellectual crowd get knowledge, great! The antiintellectual crowd gets to a method split : The teacher wants to spread knowledge even to people who don't want it (the child who copied his parents, then the parents). They get aggressive because by trying to teach, the teacher hurt their feelings that knowledge is not important as long they can live in a society accomodating their inabilities. The administation simply wants to cather to the crowd, lying to them that 2 and 2 are 22, then give them 4,000$ while claiming it's 20,000$. That works fine as long stupid people stay stupid, but breaks specularily as long one person rediscover the scientific method and other common sense reasonings, like the teacher does at the end by forcing the admin to stick to one interpetation on the news. At no point the school prretends that 2+2 is not 4. Their issue is that the teacher REFUSES to acknowledge anti-intellectualism is a thing. Modern viewpoints consider it some human issue that can't be fixed, as the Internet showed. The teacher, ironically, refuses to change her viewpoint and, until the end, still consider that everybody should have knowledge even AGAINST THEIR WILL. And the short's ending is ambiguous is she should be considered right to try to help everybody, or is she is an old rusty mind that should change her ways when the entire table started playing a different game. [EDIT] And even that it's shown in subtle ways : when a superior tells "you take all children, divide by 0, that's the respect", she answers in math terms instead of countering the fact that HER SUPERIOR just accusated her of not respecting the children! As we say, *logic can't fight feelings* and she is unable to comprehend that maths has nothing to do with the discussion.
About the principal, I think he's actually an at least partially reasonable man, but he is just too scared of the school losing reputation to stand up against the parents.

$20,002,000 (20 mil & 2 thousand) is harder to read aloud and grasp. For comedic effect, you shouldn't distract the audience from the punchline. "2+2=22" did not specify what to do with trailing zeros (or the units like thousand), so she's free to use the interpretation that gives the $22 thousand.
The thing is, while the idea of actually debating 2 + 2 seems ridiculous, this is actually a thing teachers have to deal with on a regular basis. From parents who feel like their children are unfairly being criticized to administration that would rather maintain a public perception.
This movie portrays relativism in a very exaggerated way, but so we can understand how terrible this idea is. Relativism starts with the thought that we can think what we want, we can do what we want, and no one has the authority to say it's wrong. And at the end of the video, you see how relativist ideas contradict each other, and there is no way to live in a world where truth does not exist. If absolute truth does not exist, then that sentence already becomes absolute truth. This happened to me. Standing in a 7th grade classroom cutting out construction paper letters for a bulletin board, I told student a student that I was ready to call his parents because he constantly interrupted me. I had scissors in my hand when I said this. The next morning, the principal came to my room and asked if I threatened a student with scissors. My shock was immense. I couldn't even remember cutting out the letters because I was so shocked. That afternoon the student's father and mother were ushered into my room by the assistant principal who sat there for a full 2 hours while the man threatened my job, called me vulgar names, I can't even remember. Over and over he screamed at me. I was visibly pregnant. Today, I would stand up, tell the principal to stop it, and if it didn't, I'd quit. It was horrible. I sobbed for hours. My husband made me go back to school the next day telling me if I didn't, he would win. I stayed for the insurance. After my child was born and maternity leave was up, I called them up and quit. Never went back into a classroom. And just so you know, on my evaluation for that year, the assistant principal said I was exemplary and hoped that I would never stop teaching.

Sorry you had such a horrible experience. I was lucky to have far more positive experiences than negative ones in my teaching career, but still happy that I retired early. It makes me mad because one of my favourite and knowledgeable teachers quit because one of the student's parents harassed him for the student failing, even though the student failed to attend to class, and therefore, it showed in his grades. There's definitely a line that needs to be drawn and I think this short film is excellent at showing that a student's grades shouldn't depend on how aggressive their parents are.

No kidding. Those kids grew up and became part of society. I once told one of my colleagues, who had completely messed up some accounting calculations, that her numbers were wrong and needed to be checked again. She yelled at me and immediately called HR, claiming that I had used very aggressive language by saying 'wrong' to her. I only said that very aggressive word "wrong" once during the conversation and once in an email. Thankfully, HR didn’t take her claims seriously, but that experience was quite traumatizing.

@@themissgpg Oh no, I mean that I have had parents/admin/other teachers argue about some very basic stuff. My first year at this one school, I had a fellow teacher (who teaches third grade including math) argue that we shouldn't have too much change to start our fund raiser because we wouldn't make as much profit when we had to pay it back. I tried to explain that that is not how change works and we needed more or we would run out. She got mad and pulled the but that's what we always do card. I had to bite my tongue really hard when another teacher pointed out that they ran out of change the previous year.
As a former teacher the only unrealistic part is the protest and keeping her job until then. I was told not to correct grammar in english class, instead told to change my grading based on their background. they wanted me to take students i perceived as black and hold them to a lower standard. i told them that's called discrimination. this was a community college.

The ending was beautiful!! but this is exactly where the world is headed if people don't change drastically. FACTS are far more important than feelings and the sooner people realise this the sooner we can actually advance instead of going backwards.
The herd is being led by the nose and being trained to accept anything they are force fed. Those that disagree will be outcast. We have a situation where all of the 600 or so world corporations own a portion of each other's company. They have more leverage than the superpowers. Above them is one or two organizations who want united interest of all world monetary matters, risk prevention and united guarantee that has no national borders. Who would or could challenge them. @@TheRedKing247 I dont know who started it but the quality of good teachers here in the U S has gone down significantly since I went. Now students are a necessary inconvenience in many schools, especially inner city schools.
Much of that has to do with the mandated propaganda that must be implemented like, *Columbus discovered America* , in order to get federal funding.
I see the main point in the title, which is a play on the novel idea in our current political world that proven lies are not lies, but “alternative facts.” The piece slams the current atmosphere of anti-intellectualism (“You think you’re an expert, and that I should pay attention to you and your peers, just because you’re all smart and have devoted your lives to this topic?”). There’s also a healthy slam on parents who can’t admit their little Johnny made a mistake, and what teachers have to put up with these days.
Plus the idea that a single person can have his/her life ruined because the masses are against him/her regardless who's right/wrong. Schools, Colleges and Corporations would rather terminate trouble makers rather than face backlash (regardless of the situation).
It also feels like a play on the 'new math' that they started back around 2010....
And the worst part is the right-wingers in the comments are just projecting it onto the intellectuals
Great story but it's sad to think that so many teachers have to deal with parents like that. They aren't doing their kids or the general public any favors.

Sehr schön in diesem Film dargestellt war auch die symbiotische Verbindung der Eltern mit ihrem Kind. Die Mechanismen innerhalb der Strukturen, in Verbindung mit den Medien, wurden hier erschreckend real dargestellt.
It just frustrates me. Like seriously why are they even arguing over imaginary numbers and instead focusing on real things. Numbers wrriten on paper don't mean anything, which is why I don't like the movie. If it was more of a stem focused thing I think it woild turn out well. But to just see the movie go in a downhill spiral over something that is known to everyone in this world is kind of ridicoulous. Yes I get america is moving towards shit like this but come on it shouldnt have been exaggerated to this point.

I got the impression that this short film was attempting to inform us on a subject unrelated to the mathematical issue at hand. But I'm confident that the general audience saw it in their own typical way.
It dealt with people's ignorance and unwillingness to question what they had been taught and delve into the truth, which nearly always turns into an abstract idea for people because of their inability to see past the obvious and recognise the subtle signs of reality.
The teacher in the film hails from a time when manipulation was less common, and because of her own long years of education and exposure to the real world, she has unfiltered insight to share.
The parents of the child standing up for their son struck me as a reflection of reality, considering that these parents' knowledge is distorted, to begin with. They haven't learned from their past mistakes. Even when children don't pay attention to their parents, they do imitate them. The child responded to the teacher in this manner for that reason. The kid developed sensitivity for things other than what is generally accepted to be right.
The kid refuses to believe when the teacher says "everybody makes mistakes."
She provides him with convincing examples, but the little boy is unable to understand what she is attempting to convey since he also believes that the reality is what the "majority" says it is.
When the teacher meets the child's parents, they make fun of her and label her as narcissistic in the most famous way just because of her sincere efforts to instruct the child in the proper way. The parents are so delusional; they don't believe in the absolute truth either, but they nevertheless regard themselves and their child as free thinkers.
I perceived the principal of the school as one of the perpetrators trying to exploit developing children in his own line of business.
A few moments before the last scene, when the principal distributes money to satisfy an obligation, he does so in the proper quantity and according to the correct calculations because he is aware of the truth, but he doesn't want everyone to be aware of genuine information and knowledge.
And in the end, the teacher gives another blatantly incorrect mathematical answer when the principal takes out the right monetary amount. There, she is essentially making fun of the system, the administrators in charge of it, and the people who collectively and mindlessly believe everything these officials say.
The subject is making fun of Trump's 'Alternative facts'
Yeah, there's two layers :
- First, the obvious alternative facts, anti-intellectualist crowd (US far right)
First-and-a-half, *that crowd* is persuaded to be the intellectual by maintaining an openminded/debate charade, when they actually have no idea of common sense methods to derive a truth. Like a children's game running on non sensical rules like "my cape grants me ability to kill an opponent with a ring of invulnerability"
For them, everything is in a perpetual debate. The debate IS the point of the debate, and not to find knowledge at the end of the debate. They give the impression of being like Newton, people always questionning their world... but unable to find anything because guess what, intellectuals already found the correct answers so you either have to copy or get the wrong ones.
- Second, the school doesn't care as long both sides are happy
The intellectual crowd get knowledge, great!
The antiintellectual crowd gets to a method split :
The teacher wants to spread knowledge even to people who don't want it (the child who copied his parents, then the parents). They get aggressive because by trying to teach, the teacher hurt their feelings that knowledge is not important as long they can live in a society accomodating their inabilities.
The administation simply wants to cather to the crowd, lying to them that 2 and 2 are 22, then give them 4,000$ while claiming it's 20,000$. That works fine as long stupid people stay stupid, but breaks specularily as long one person rediscover the scientific method and other common sense reasonings, like the teacher does at the end by forcing the admin to stick to one interpetation on the news.
At no point the school prretends that 2+2 is not 4. Their issue is that the teacher REFUSES to acknowledge anti-intellectualism is a thing. Modern viewpoints consider it some human issue that can't be fixed, as the Internet showed. The teacher, ironically, refuses to change her viewpoint and, until the end, still consider that everybody should have knowledge even AGAINST THEIR WILL. And the short's ending is ambiguous is she should be considered right to try to help everybody, or is she is an old rusty mind that should change her ways when the entire table started playing a different game.
[EDIT] And even that it's shown in subtle ways : when a superior tells "you take all children, divide by 0, that's the respect", she answers in math terms instead of countering the fact that HER SUPERIOR just accusated her of not respecting the children! As we say, *logic can't fight feelings* and she is unable to comprehend that maths has nothing to do with the discussion.
About the principal, I think he's actually an at least partially reasonable man, but he is just too scared of the school losing reputation to stand up against the parents.

$20,002,000 (20 mil & 2 thousand) is harder to read aloud and grasp. For comedic effect, you shouldn't distract the audience from the punchline. "2+2=22" did not specify what to do with trailing zeros (or the units like thousand), so she's free to use the interpretation that gives the $22 thousand.

The thing is, while the idea of actually debating 2 + 2 seems ridiculous, this is actually a thing teachers have to deal with on a regular basis. From parents who feel like their children are unfairly being criticized to administration that would rather maintain a public perception.

This movie portrays relativism in a very exaggerated way, but so we can understand how terrible this idea is. Relativism starts with the thought that we can think what we want, we can do what we want, and no one has the authority to say it's wrong. And at the end of the video, you see how relativist ideas contradict each other, and there is no way to live in a world where truth does not exist. If absolute truth does not exist, then that sentence already becomes absolute truth.
I am very grateful to the producers of this short, and I would do everything to make the sense of it spread to everyone.
