I’ve seen both. Aquaman takes the high ground for me!! And Yes am a 24 black man living in the US. I was born in Africa right where “Wakanda” (Kenya+Ethiopia) is based off. I grow up there till I was 20 years old and then moved here.

And let's be clear, its impact and its significance and success definitely influenced James Wan. It is naive to not think that he just blatantly copied and sampled from the majority of Coogler's format in Aquaman. Knowing how the stories are similar he should have done his story based on Justice League Unlimited animated series with Aquaman having a family already and losing his hand. But WB wanted to do an underwater Wakanda with Lord of the Ring and Jurassic Park scenes. It was near plagiarism, to say the least. Plus Black Panther had more Shakespearean themes in the movie. The villain helped the hero evolve his views on his Kingdom and thus made his arc complete. Scar did not evolve Simba, Ocean Master did not evolve Aquaman, the Joker has never evolved Batman. This is one of those very rare moments in storytelling that a hero gets the epiphany of his purpose from the villain's (very true to life) point of view. BP is the superior film with way more cultural and historical truth and significance than just an underwater fantasy world with CGI video game effects.

Not even a single shot was taken in Africa for that matter. At least Aquaman went to Africa, and actually shot good scenes there. Just because a movie had a black filled cast doesn’t mean it’s good. Critics gave it 96% man, that’s equal with The Godfather and above The Dark Knight. Seriously 😒?? And the audiences only gave it 78%. No. Let's critique the means in which James Wan took a format of storytelling and story arc of characters of a Kingdom that Coogler used a year earlier to great success and basically just replaced it with a sea world version. The movie was so similar to BP it was distracting. Whether you agree with Coogler's cinematography choices in location, the movie's success is because of the truths it brought to light and its portrayal of people of color. I thought we all could celebrate that triumph, but I guess that is not important where you come from. And I am woke. Are you?? Then stay woke or get woke. Both movies are fantasies and fiction and comic book movies. But BP is a movie which highlights African Americans in a positive way is the fourth highest grossing film worldwide and domestic. (that's without the support of China which seems to hate black movies. ) If Aqua Man didn't get that support from China the gross numbers would be drastically much lower.) Not even one African actor played in that movie, every one is out side of Africa. Nothing ever that had to do with Africa... the movie is filled with a bunch of American/Canadians who try to nail the accent. Critics overrated it with their reviews, saying it was the best of 2018??? They nominated for best picture... come one man in no way it even deserved to be mentioned nonetheless nomination? It’s easily the forgettable movie ever, I and my entire family regretted it. Believe we are Black Africans, and we were cringing the whole time. And in the end we went out awkwardly. Smh 🤦♂️ never disappointed like that. The plot, CGI, script, choreography.. everything was abysmal. 😞 sad really.

Overall, comparing DC and Marvel films are like comparing apples to oranges. DC's strength is in their stand alone films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Dark Knight. While for Marvel, it's strength is in films where the characters collaborated like in the Avengers installments. I'm just a superhero fan so I love both DC and Marvel equally. Peace! =)
You may want to change this once you've seen the proper Justice League. Also, its weird to compare this when there hasn't really been DC group films yet, whereas there is now Avengers, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame, and then I suppose Guardians.
Id say the snydercut is on the same level as marvels avengers movies DC has better stories, better comics and better ways of executing stuff in solo superhero movies and tbh the snydercut is a masterpiece. The only thing they went wrong with was the josstice league and another problem they face is getting stuff done on time.

I went into the Black Panther movie theater without even knowing what the movie was or who Black Panther was. After seeing it in theaters, Black Panther became my favorite superhero mainly because of his really cool vibranium suit. When I saw the first Aquaman trailer I was like "Wow this is really cool! I'm getting some Black Panther vibes from the trailer (Or maybe because someone said that in the comments and I was thinking the same). " I now like Aquaman much better because of the story, I like the pacing better than BP, they showed more of Atlantis than Wakanda, which i thought was cool at first but Atlantis is much more visual pleasing to see an imagine, the fight scenes are 100x better in Aquaman. Less gun fights and more hand-to-hand combat in Aquaman + the amazing camerawork is a 10/10 from me. Overall I would watch Aquaman 100 times and would never get bored

I saw Aquaman 3 times, liked it more each time and grew to really love the score. I only saw BP once and that was enough for me. Can't wait for Shazam, my top 5 fav superhero.
Aquaman has no pretense about being an important film. Black Panther tries so hard to be an important cultural staple, it undercuts its own point at the end when it ends with two men made of rubber punching each other.

john wayne yeah, this is the stupid criticism of BP I couldn’t stand when it was in theaters. Yes, I had problem with some of the action sequence, but I enjoyed the movie nonetheless. If you just couldn’t ignore that and didn’t enjoy the movie, that’s fine. Just say so instead of saying some blatant crap about the message being nonexistent due to an underwhelming action sequence.

Okay, so the reason BP has a death fake out isn't because it thinks it can fool us but to allow Killmonger to take over and so we can see the effect it has on the other characters, they have to choose sides at that point
I think the Oscar nominations and wins were well deserved. Production Design, Costumes, and Score, those were deserved wins. I've seen even BP haters admit that.
Aquaman easily. Best DC film so far. I was surprised how good it was when I watched it; especially the underwater CGI, it was amazing. I wasn't planning on watching it in theater but I'm glad I did. Didn't think it would be better than Wonder Woman going in.
YESSSSS!!!!!!! I've been waiting for another video! The music from Aquaman during the special effects segment gave me chills. So many times in Aquaman I got chills. And I saw it on IMAX! The only acceptable way to watch it.

Well, I was very surprised with this video tbh. Aquaman had only better visuals and action, with lack of character development and proper pacing. BP had a more compelling story with better exploration of themes, more developed/memorable characters and better soundtrack/score.

I ended up caring a lot for almost every character in BP while I couldn't care much about Aquaman's characters, and it's hard to deny that the relationships, including that of Atlanna and Thomas, were rushed as hell. My main reason to care about Atlanna at all is that I love Nicole Kidman. However, certian moments sure were very touching: When Arthur said to Orm that there was a time when he wanted to meet his little brother the most, and when we were told that Thomas is still very dedicated to Atlanna and meeting her again. But that's about it for me.

BP: Good villain with good reasons, good side character but not good main character (very bland), ok story, good message. Overall it’s still very boring at times. Aquaman: Good villain with good reasons (but a little bland), good side character and good main character, good story (very fun), good message. Overall it’s a very fun, funny and action heavy film. Aquaman definitely is better. People just hate the fact that DCEU (who made justice league) actually made a pretty good and even better movie than the “most hyped” marvel film.

Ppl go to these films for action scenes. Not for intricate narratives. Ppl take their kids to see these films. That's the target audience, young ppl. In August 2014, Beall and Kurt Johnstad were hired to write two competing scripts and the film was officially announced in October 2014, but and after the horrendous Batman V Superman in 2016 and the Justice League debacle, James Wan, Johnstad, Johns, and Johnson-McGoldrick all performed various rewrites. They didn't start filming until May 2017. It is not by coincidence that it is so similar to the widely popular character Black Panther esp since Black Panther was already tracking really high since the Civil War movie and knowing that the stories were similar. Their stories share similar origins so Wan altered the story to be similar to the Tchalla and Killmonger dynamic. All of Hollywood knows Wan copied Coogler that's why the film for all its over the top glorious CGI spectacle versions of Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings is not as celebrated and historically will be less significant

Also Killmonger, got genuine tears out me whereas though I ended up sympathizing with Orm, he was the closest to a text book villain. I also really disliked Black Manta.. could have done without him in the film. Klaw was entertaining and I was actually annoyed that they killed him off so quickly.
Jesus Christ, what are people smoking? Black Panther is a much better movie, Aquaman is tons of fun, but the writing is terrible, just god awful. The director did a great job though, but the script is trash. That being said Black Panther the character was definitely better in Civil War.
Great review...no bias...just your honesty opinion. I love both marvel and DC...and Aquaman is a better movie experience...black panther is just a great story...i loved both...only comicbook movies i didn't like were Antman and Venom...they both had weak villains and mediocre action.
Suicide Squad gets an Oscar nomination AND wins, but Aquaman gets completely snubbed. Yeah. I get it Academy, seems fair. Aquaman should have been nominated for Best Visual Effects without question.

But we watched Aquaman at 3 AM, which made me feel asleep, so asleep that I did wanna go away from the cinema. I am not used to watch movies at late. And. as always. Ocean Master is pretty well developed in the comics, he has always put Atlantis 1st. But when The Crime Syndicate came to Earth and released all the villains, he simply walked off. I really like how he "showed mercy" to the only human who was kind to him by killing him since he was pinned in rubble and had no chance of survival. But then he saves a family being attacked by criminals, and he stays with them, heck he even fell inlove with the mother (by family I mean a single mother and her child). He does not return to Atlantis because it seems like he is already dead in the eyes of Atlantis and he is ok with that. He took the same path as his mother, falling in love with someone from the surface.
Have to say I like them both equally. They're different films to me, with a different purpose each. Although I will say that many people are biased against Black Panther, which is ironic because I will admit the movie is indeed overrated. If you thought the movie was boring or average that's fine. But hating the film because of some bad CGI or because it was nominated for an award you don't think it deserves is silly.
regardless of how good Aquaman is, BP will always be better because it will be remembered as another great entry into a deep cinematic universe with one of the greatest villains in that cinematic universe and as the first successful mainstream superhero movie with a black lead. While on the other hand, Aquaman will be (at best) remembered as a good entry into a shallow attempt of a cinematic universe to copy Marvel. The only reason why Wonderwoman will be remembered (unless DC somehow manages to bounce back from all their failures) is because WW was an actually great film and as the first successful mainstream superhero movie with a female lead. Aquaman doesn't have that luxury, which is why I like BP more. But hey, that's just my opinion.
I watched both movies at least 10 times since their releases. Thats how good I thought both films were. Gets better on each viewing. Have not watched any other comic book movies
i went to see the premier for Aquaman and once it ended the entire theater clapped and cheered for 5 minutes straight. i heard some people in the audience crying because of how magnificent the movie was. i loved aquaman and i hope to see it again. i haven't seen it since the premier and that is a shame.
remember that people in black panther are human with high tech gadgets... so the action is true to its origin... i prefer black panther because the story is clearer than aquaman... the only advantage of aquaman is CGI that is it.

Apart from infinity war black had some of the best special effects in marvel I remember watching the first trailer and the showed the ship flying into wakanda my jaw dropped it was even more epic in the movie. Aquaman has the ability to command all life in the sea and he can literally communicate with marine life! Black Panther controls... um... he, uh... has political allies? And he... talks to other humans and sentient beings, I guess. Aquaman fought a literal sea monster and his own brother to claim his right to the throne! Black Panther fought... another guy who wanted the title. BOTH of Aquaman's parents are still ALIVE. Black Panther only has... one parent. Both characters have really awesome costumes, though.

I’ve seen both. Aquaman takes the high ground for me!! And Yes am a 24 black man living in the US. I was born in Africa right where “Wakanda” (Kenya+Ethiopia) is based off. I grow up there till I was 20 years old and then moved here.
Coogler's Black Panther film changed the landscape of superhero cinema storytelling while both empowering women of color as strong character leads in a movie and bringing to the forefront the discussion of the social injustices towards African Americans while not excusing the topic of Black cultural divides among African Americans and African communities.
And let's be clear, its impact and its significance and success definitely influenced James Wan. It is naive to not think that he just blatantly copied and sampled from the majority of Coogler's format in Aquaman. Knowing how the stories are similar he should have done his story based on Justice League Unlimited animated series with Aquaman having a family already and losing his hand. But WB wanted to do an underwater Wakanda with Lord of the Ring and Jurassic Park scenes. It was near plagiarism, to say the least.

Black Panther had more Shakespearean themes in the movie. The villain helped the hero evolve his views on his Kingdom and thus made his arc complete. Scar did not evolve Simba, Ocean Master did not evolve Aquaman, the Joker has never evolved Batman. This is one of those very rare moments in storytelling that a hero gets the epiphany of his purpose from the villain's (very true to life) point of view. BP is the superior film with way more cultural and historical truth and significance than just an underwater fantasy world with CGI video game effects.

No. Let's critique the means in which James Wan took a format of storytelling and story arc of characters of a Kingdom that Coogler used a year earlier to great success and basically just replaced it with a sea world version. The movie was so similar to BP it was distracting. Whether you agree with Coogler's cinematography choices in location, the movie's success is because of the truths it brought to light and its portrayal of people of color. I thought we all could celebrate that triumph, but I guess that is not important where you come from. And I am woke. Are you?? Then stay woke or get woke. Both movies are fantasies and fiction and comic book movies. But BP is a movie which highlights African Americans in a positive way is the fourth highest grossing film worldwide and domestic. (that's without the support of China which seems to hate black movies. ) If Aqua Man didn't get that support from China the gross numbers would be drastically much lower.) The point is you must have another agenda to undermine BP's phenomenon and cultural significance. That's unfortunate.

Overall, comparing DC and Marvel films are like comparing apples to oranges. DC's strength is in their stand alone films like Wonder Woman, Aquaman and The Dark Knight. While for Marvel, it's strength is in films where the characters collaborated like in the Avengers installments. I'm just a superhero fan so I love both DC and Marvel equally. Peace! =)

You may want to change this once you've seen the proper Justice League. Also, its weird to compare this when there hasn't really been DC group films yet, whereas there is now Avengers, Age of Ultron, Civil War, Infinity War, Endgame, and then I suppose Guardians.

I went into the Black Panther movie theater without even knowing what the movie was or who Black Panther was. After seeing it in theaters, Black Panther became my favorite superhero mainly because of his really cool vibranium suit. When I saw the first Aquaman trailer I was like "Wow this is really cool! I'm getting some Black Panther vibes from the trailer (Or maybe because someone said that in the comments and I was thinking the same). " I now like Aquaman much better because of the story, I like the pacing better than BP, they showed more of Atlantis than Wakanda, which i thought was cool at first but Atlantis is much more visual pleasing to see an imagine, the fight scenes are 100x better in Aquaman. Less gun fights and more hand-to-hand combat in Aquaman + the amazing camerawork is a 10/10 from me. Overall I would watch Aquaman 100 times and would never get bored

Aquaman easily. Best DC film so far. I was surprised how good it was when I watched it; especially the underwater CGI, it was amazing. I wasn't planning on watching it in theater but I'm glad I did. Didn't think it would be better than Wonder Woman going in.

Well, I was very surprised with this video tbh. Aquaman had only better visuals and action, with lack of character development and proper pacing. BP had a more compelling story with better exploration of themes, more developed/memorable characters and better soundtrack/score.

Got to disagree there, I didn’t really care much for any of the characters Black Panther apart from Killmonger, but I cared for most of the characters in Aquaman, especially Atlanna and Thomas

I ended up caring a lot for almost every character in BP while I couldn't care much about Aquaman's characters, and it's hard to deny that the relationships, including that of Atlanna and Thomas, were rushed as hell. My main reason to care about Atlanna at all is that I love Nicole Kidman.
However, certian moments sure were very touching: When Arthur said to Orm that there was a time when he wanted to meet his little brother the most, and when we were told that Thomas is still very dedicated to Atlanna and meeting her again. But that's about it for me.

Honestly, Killmonger was an amazing villain and was the best MCU villain IMO. Black Panther was also a very good movie.

Ppl go to these films for action scenes. Not for intricate narratives. Ppl take their kids to see these films. That's the target audience, young ppl. In August 2014, Beall and Kurt Johnstad were hired to write two competing scripts and the film was officially announced in October 2014, but and after the horrendous Batman V Superman in 2016 and the Justice League debacle, James Wan, Johnstad, Johns, and Johnson-McGoldrick all performed various rewrites. They didn't start filming until May 2017. It is not by coincidence that it is so similar to the widely popular character Black Panther esp since Black Panther was already tracking really high since the Civil War movie and knowing that the stories were similar.
Their stories share similar origins so Wan altered the story to be similar to the Tchalla and Killmonger dynamic. All of Hollywood knows Wan copied Coogler that's why the film for all its over the top glorious CGI spectacle versions of Jurassic Park and Lord of the Rings is not as celebrated and historically will be less significant

WHAT!? He never get the chance to do something and was ejected for some "bullshit" tradition...in aquaman it hinted that orm is the king of atlantis (not the ocean) for several year since no one with royal blood never go against him...aquaman has the right to the throne but he never wanted that because he believe that atlantis kill his mother, the main reason he want to fight orm the first time they meet is purely vengeance and selfish reason (aquaman just want peace and stop atlantis to threaten his world) it'd after he knew thr whole story behind all of this that he is determined to reclaim the throne
2 the femal charachter: again black panther fail to make strong and beliveble female lead... 4 of the elite guard saw t challa grow up and none of them defend him!?...I mean killmonger doesn't have to kill him since he is deafetd and no one have any file case for killmonger father crimes!? 3 The cinematography: again aquaman is better...the few flaw of aquaman is too many land shot and the lack of close shot unlike black panther...the ost is 50/50 but aquaman win because of the smart idea of the musician (use electro in water and more clasical music in land) black panther is good too...but the action scene in aquaman is amazing coogler is overrated and james wan is the master of action

Black Panther changed the landscape of superhero cinema storytelling while both empowering women of color as strong character leads in a movie and bringing to the forefront the discussion of the social injustices towards African Americans and not excusing the topic of Black cultural divides among African Americans and African communities. And its impact and its significance and success definitely influenced James Wan. It is naive to not think that he just blatantly copied and sampled from the majority of Coogler's format in Aquaman. Knowing how the stories are similar he should have done his story based on Justice League Unlimited animated series with Aquaman having a family already and losing his hand. But WB wanted to do an underwater Wakanda with Lord of the Ring and Jurassic Park scenes. It was near plagiarism, to say the least.

Black Panther had more Shakespearean themes in the movie. The villain helped the hero evolve his views on his Kingdom and thus made his arc complete. Scar did not evolve Simba, Ocean Master did not evolve Aquaman, they Joker has never evolved Batman. This is one of those very rare moments in storytelling that a hero gets the epiphany of his purpose from the villain's (very true to life) point of view. BP is the superior film with way more cultural and historical truth and significance than just an underwater fantasy world with CGI video game effects.

Also Killmonger, got genuine tears out me whereas though I ended up sympathizing with Orm, he was the closest to a text book villain. I also really disliked Black Manta.. could have done without him in the film. Klaw was entertaining and I was actually annoyed that they killed him off so quickly.
Jesus Christ, what are people smoking? Black Panther is a much better movie, Aquaman is tons of fun, but the writing is terrible, just god awful. The director did a great job though, but the script is trash. That being said Black Panther the character was definitely better in Civil War.

I love both marvel and DC...and Aquaman is a better movie experience...black panther is just a great story...i loved both...only comicbook movies i didn't like were Antman and Venom...they both had weak villains and mediocre action.
Suicide Squad gets an Oscar nomination AND wins, but Aquaman gets completely snubbed. Yeah. I get it Academy, seems fair. Aquaman should have been nominated for Best Visual Effects without question.

Ocean Master is pretty well developed in the comics, he has always put Atlantis 1st.
But when The Crime Syndicate came to Earth and released all the villains, he simply walked off. I really like how he "showed mercy" to the only human who was kind to him by killing him since he was pinned in rubble and had no chance of survival.
But then he saves a family being attacked by criminals, and he stays with them, heck he even fell inlove with the mother (by family I mean a single mother and her child). He does not return to Atlantis because it seems like he is already dead in the eyes of Atlantis and he is ok with that. He took the same path as his mother, falling in love with someone from the surface.
Have to say I like them both equally. They're different films to me, with a different purpose each.
Although I will say that many people are biased against Black Panther, which is ironic because I will admit the movie is indeed overrated. If you thought the movie was boring or average that's fine. But hating the film because of some bad CGI or because it was nominated for an award you don't think it deserves is silly.

regardless of how good Aquaman is, BP will always be better because it will be remembered as another great entry into a deep cinematic universe with one of the greatest villains in that cinematic universe and as the first successful mainstream superhero movie with a black lead. While on the other hand, Aquaman will be (at best) remembered as a good entry into a shallow attempt of a cinematic universe to copy Marvel. The only reason why Wonderwoman will be remembered (unless DC somehow manages to bounce back from all their failures) is because WW was an actually great film and as the first successful mainstream superhero movie with a female lead. Aquaman doesn't have that luxury, which is why I like BP more. But hey, that's just my opinion.

I watched both movies at least 10 times since their releases. Thats how good I thought both films were. Gets better on each viewing. Have not watched any other comic book movies
i went to see the premier for Aquaman and once it ended the entire theater clapped and cheered for 5 minutes straight. i heard some people in the audience crying because of how magnificent the movie was. i loved aquaman and i hope to see it again. i haven't seen it since the premier and that is a shame.
remember that people in black panther are human with high tech gadgets... so the action is true to its origin...

Apart from infinity war black had some of the best special effects in marvel I remember watching the first trailer and the showed the ship flying into wakanda my jaw dropped it was even more epic in the movie. Unfortunately he’s special effects on his suit looked so fake so did homecomings suit it is especially a problem whenver I try rewatching them it looks so irratating to look at it got so much more worse in black panthers final fight both of them should have stuck to their civil war models but you already know how marvel loves to sell toys

Aquaman has the ability to command all life in the sea and he can literally communicate with marine life! Black Panther controls... um... he, uh... has political allies? And he... talks to other humans and sentient beings, I guess.
Aquaman fought a literal sea monster and his own brother to claim his right to the throne! Black Panther fought... another guy who wanted the title.
BOTH of Aquaman's parents are still ALIVE. Black Panther only has... one parent.
