Peter losing his powers in Spider-Man 2 was explained low key though, reason he loses his powers is because of his struggles in life, and because of that he didn't want to be Spider-Man anymore, he hated it. As a matter of fact, this TH-camr explained it best, take a look th-cam.com/video/1QMXBXDISUs/w-d-xo.html

Tobey’s Spider-Man lost his powers because the stress. MJ wants to be with him but and he wants to be with her, but he’s too busy being Spider-Man. Harry hates Spider-Man because he thinks he killed his father, and he’s upset with peter because he takes Spider-Man’s pictures and he won’t turn him in. Then J Jonnah Jameson is destroying Spider-Man’s career, Peter’s failing his classes, him and aunt May are both having money troubles, and on top of all of that his idol is planning on destroying New York.

I'm so sick of people not understanding Mary Jane's character or motivations in the Rami films. It wasn't that she was a tease or took pleasure out of treating Peter like crap. He'd just rejected her (unintentionally) in the first film (for her protection) after she told him she loved him. She was in so much pain after that and his lack of honesty or explanation only made her frustration and anger at Peter more apparent. And it tore her apart because she was still madly in love with him but was trying to move on in another relationship which she wasn't completely commited to. Did this guy even bother to watch the extended cut? It goes deeper on that when her friend asks her if she is in love with John enough to marry him.
The wedding scene was just ridiculous. Rami should have had her call it off before they got to the alter I'll agree on that. But he wanted to shoot MJ running through the streets in a wedding dress. And the purpose of the scene was to keep the audience in suspense. Will MJ let go of Peter and move on with John? Or will she risk danger to stand beside Peter? I'll tell you this, as unfair as it was to leave him standing there she did him a favor. If he'd married her, she would've still been pining over another guy. It would've ended up being a loveless marriage. And John had to have known deep down before hand that MJ was in love with someone else. Anyway I just wanted to add more of my take on that.

Antonio Darcy But since when did Peter’s powers ever have anything to do with his mental and emotional state?? His powers give him physical enhancements. It’s source isn’t mental or emotional. And besides, if peter made web shooters like in the comics, he would’ve still been able to be Spider-Man in a very small way

Keyser Soeze Idk it just doesn’t feel right with me, I mean I’d understand if he was a bit lacky with his performance as Spider-Man like maybe when he saves people, he doesn’t get the job done as well as usual, but losing his powers completely and then just having it come back all of a sudden when he goes in to kiss MJ, I struggle to believe that. It’s an amazing movie overall though

  • @thek-tboundary6565
    @thek-tboundary6565 5 ปีที่แล้ว +324

The reason peter’s powers start to go is because of his emotions. He only loses his powers after extreme emotional stress. Like his aunt being turned down on a loan. His best friend hating him and the girl of his dreams getting married in the same night. And him missing MJ’s play because of Spider-Man. He starts to reject this identity and as such subconsciously rejecting his powers.

I got to correct you on something about Spiderman 2 because you clearly didn't pay attention. It wasn't that Peter was losing his powers, the emotional weight he was carrying around being commited to Spiderman was becoming detrimental. It was affecting his personal life and all his relationships with his friends and family. And it caused him so much turmoil that it was ultimately affecting his ability to be Spiderman. Peter was taking on so much responsibility that it threw him off balance and he became sick. Sick in the mind, body and soul. This movie was about finding that balance between Peter and Spiderman.
In the first film he decided to completely commit to being just Spiderman and sacrifice Peter Parker. But that decision almost destroyed him as we saw in the 2nd film. By the end of Spiderman 2 he finds that balance especially when Mary Jane fully commits to sharing those risks with him. She decided to share that load with Peter so he's not carrying it alone. His powers returned upon realizing that his loved ones were in danger. And if he'd just quit they'd be in even more danger than not having them in his life (which is what he thought was best in the first movie). Peter wasn't losing his powers it was a mental condition. The scene where he goes to the doctor was very self explanatory. By the end of Spiderman 2 Peter realizes he's not just a superhero he's also human.

I used to dislike MJ from the Raimi movies because I thought she was a tease too, but honestly look at the character of Peter and what he puts her through. He makes her feel loved and special in the first movie. She's been verbally beaten down by a dad who treats her like crap, Harry has a very shallow relationship with her where he doesn't even stand up for her when his father calls her a golddigger, and the ONLY person who is there for her is Peter. She is ready to be with him and love him in the first movie's ending; but Peter inexplicably rejects her and she has no idea why. She'd been toyed with before and she needs to find someone who won't and John Jameson in SM2 is a wonderful boyfriend to her... she just can't get over Peter even though she tries. She ends off the movie choosing to stay with Peter because she understands why he did what he did and she loves him for his self-sacrificing love and what a hero he is. After really thinking about MJ she's not such a bad character at all, she's a realistic person trying to navigate a difficult relationship.

It’s simple. The amazing spider man had constant meddling from Sony studios, and far from home was treated as just another two hour long episode in the MCU. Spider man 2 actually felt like something special. It was done with a clear vision, and with passion. THAT is why it will stand the test of time and that is why 20-30 years from now we can fondly look back and say yeah.. still an absolute classic

  • @Dagenspear

I think you don't use a lot of context in the Mary Jane character issue.
I think you don't regard that the face touching is all after Peter himself plays similarly in Spider-Man 1, where he and her are holding hands, he gives that big speech to her and shuts her down at the end of the movie when she kisses him and says she loves him. Isn't it possible that MJ telling Peter she's dating something that's more than companionship is her trying to get him realize she's not going to wait around for him? I think that's what that means.
And I think you don't regard that MJ has already told Peter she has feelings for him and he shut her down in SM 1. Should she just reiterate that to someone whose rejected her and as far as I think he's basically said, only has friendship to give?
I think she's not sure about the choice she wants to make in that situation, as on paper John is a better match for her than Peter in his stressful, dangerous life and by looking down barrel of the gun that is the isle she chooses then. But if she were to tell John in person would that make him really feel better? It's not great for him, but does it villainize her for choosing how she did it? And I think you're making assumptions about how the John character feels in situations and operates.
Why do you think she uses him to get to Peter? I don't think the movie depicts that for the most part. I think she's committed in staying with the man who she thinks on paper is best for her. It's not necessarily healthy, but using him to get to Peter isn't what I think the movie is developing.
No, to call Peter a saint in comparison to MJ is untrue. Peter is still the person I think trying to ask out an engaged woman, still the person who tries to woo her with poetry after disappointing her and telling her all he had give her was being her friend. From MJ's perspective I think it's a reasonable perception that Peter complicates things and is emotionally jerking her around. And even in regards to things MJ may not know about at that point. Like Peter kissing his friend's girlfriend. Or in Spider-Man 3 putting on the black suit, knowing what it can do. And even in comparison to other villains. Eddie is still more outright villainous before he gets the suit and Flint is a criminal before too.
I don't think Gwen is the superior love interest. Why would she be? I think she's not as much of a character as Mary Jane. I think Gwen has little emotional roundedness and character development, and that her character is there mainly to service Peter, while she herself in character aspects doesn't have a lot going on. Even the likable remark I don't think applies, considering her disregard for her dad's dying wish and uncaring attitude about him at all in that movie. Even her helping I think is more plot based.

There's a line about "keeping it all bottled up inside can make you sick" and it's something that completely makes sense to me as an adult where my emotions getting in the way have hampered my performance in other areas of life. It's personifying Peter's stress in life and his heart being elsewhere in Peter's powers waning and it's as simple as that- which is why to me it's so effective.

Oh, and there's also something else I forgot to mention, and it's about Electro's motivation, because I think you might've missed something about it.
Max Dillon wasn't just a nerd - he was shown to be someone who's underappreciated and pushed around a lot. And, as seen in the brief fantasy that he has of berating his boss, he's got a *lot* of anger pent up inside him as a result. When Spiderman saved him, he felt appreciated, which is what I think made him such a big fan of Spiderman: because he felt like Spiderman was his only friend, the only person who he could trust.
When Max became Electro, I think the electricity fried his brain and made him go insane. And, being insane, he lost control of his mind, so all of the anger that he had built up inside him was all primed to be unleashed. He saw himself garnering attention from the city, but then Spiderman took the spotlight, and that would've made his mind just COMPLETELY lose it, but he still partly saw Spiderman as a friend, which is why Electro was surprisingly reserved when talking to Spiderman in the streets. But once the sniper up on the roof shot Electro, his insane mind saw it as Spiderman setting him up so that he could be killed, which is why he then called Spiderman a liar. Electro then felt like he couldn't trust anyone anymore, and he finally let loose all of his rage and emotions towards everyone for treating him like crap all the time when he was Max. Although he mainly directed his rage at Spiderman, because, y'know... Electro's a villain and all.
But yeah, that villainous motivation of his is something that I pieced together from my first viewing of the movie, and it looked like you might've missed that in this video, so I'm just pointing it out here for you.

Since peter never really told mj how he felt about her in the first movie going into the second and finding out that mj is getting married he keeps bottling his feelings for mj to the point where it made him sick resulting to him losing his powers and he doesn't gain his powers back until he tells mj his feelings for her.

Mary Jane isn’t being manipulative. She’s trying to get peter to open up because she genuinely wants to know if peter truly loves her or not. Yes, using other guys as a way for him to do so is pretty extreme but you can’t forget that in MaryJane’s perspective, peter is being the tease and is being rough towards her. There are times where he says he loves and cares for her and he obviously shows it but then there are other times where peter says they can’t be together and they can only be friends. This is obviously due to Peter’s double life as Spider-Man but Mary Jane doesn’t know this and she perceives it as peter playing with her emotions. I’m not saying Mary Jane is the best person in the world but to brush it off as her being manipulative and being a bad human being is kinda inconsiderate.

The some people don’t take into consideration that everyone has their own perspectives and experiences. Like I said, I’m not claiming MJ is a pure hearted angel but she isn’t an evil manipulative person that everyone makes her out to be. Take aunt May for Instance, people called her a bad version of aunt May just because she doesn’t instantly forgive peter when he confesses about indirectly letting uncle Ben die. People expect aunt May to be instantly loving and forgiving but when she walks away looking shocked and upset, people call her a bad person. No one would take that kind of revelation any where as well as aunt May did.

I don't think a lot of people understood MJ in Sam Raimis Spiderman. She has a lot of baggage to deal with, her terrible upbringing, her horrible father and her parents terrible marriage all that stuff affects children growing up. She takes that emotional trauma through with her into adulthood. I don't think she was being a tease in Spiderman 2. Peter was the only man who ever made her feel loved and special and who actually saw her for who she is. Her dad doesnt give a crap about her, flash used her as a trophy and so did Harry. So Peter rejecting her despite her knowing that he feels the same for her would have been a huge blow. She tries to replace him with Jameson but she loves Peter and it is very hard to stop loving someone even when they hurt you. Yes, her actions did come across as manipulative and selfish at times but we have to remember, in fact we saw in Spiderman, her terrible upbringing which definitely would affect how she deals with relationships. I feel people are too harsh on MJ. She's a very complex character and I THOUGHT Raimi knew this and tried to show it. I actually understand and sympathise with MJ more now than I've grown myself and been in relationships than I did when I was a kid. She's been starved for love all her life and Peter gave it to her then took it away. You don't think that would hurt and really affect someone who had such a crap childhood starved of affection from her father?

I noticed that there were other nods to it throughout the movie. During the charity(?) event where he has the Iron Spider suit, he panics and leaves to be alone. During the trip to Europe, there are multiple nods pointed out in front of him (the plane documentary, the murals), his screwups with using Stark tech (nearly killing Brad with the glasses, but #fuckyoubrad). I LOVED the theme that played and I feel like if peter fought differently, he couldve beat mysterio RIGHT there.

Eric, for how many storylines TASM 2 has, you forgot the Rhino appearing out of nowhere in the beginning and again at the end. You also forgot the small part where Spider-Man saves a kid from bullies, while also inspiring him to be like Spider-Man and this comes into full effect when he comes back at the end to face Rhino in full costume.

The reason why he handed over the glasses wasn’t because he was stupid. The glasses symbolized Tony’s Legacy and he felt that he couldn’t carry on his legacy so he handed them off to mysterio because he seemed trustworthy and had appeared to be more powerful. His arch is to grow into the role of a greater hero.

Its not the reason but the speed, he does it after feeling sad once, in spiderman 2 Peter still tries his hardest to be spiderman even when he loses his powers until he is given too much and can't actually handle it, it isn't cause it started affecting his normal life once, it is stablished that 2 YEARS have passed since he became spiderman and after losing too much he THEN gives up, not just cause he got scolded by someone

I’m pretty sure they glasses memorized Peter, so he could put them back on. Also, Peter felt he could trust Mysterio as another mentor figure because Stark died. I do agree with everything else though. I was expecting more grieving or getting over death in Far From Home.

"If you keep something as complicated as love stored inside, it will make you sick"
That quote from Otto Octavius is why Peter's powers were going away.
Oh and I'm quite sure he got the glasses back easily because Mysterio was dead or when someone else is given permission, that person and all other people have permission.

I personally really enjoyed TASM 2. Plot wise, it was overwhelming (if there's something they got right plot wise, it was Gwen's death in my opinion), but there are so many good things about it, f.e. Andrew and Emma's chemistry, all the actors were great overall and the soundtrack - man, the soundtrack. Spider-Man Far From Home imo was a massive let down, because as you said, it just mostly redid Homecoming. And Spider-Man 2..... It's an amazing ride.

I agree, I actually really love TASM movies, more specifically the first one. They had real emotional weight and the best web slinging. I don't understand why TASM gets so much hate. I didn't like how far from home was just a comedy. I never felt any real stakes when everythings just a joke.

The likely reason for Tobey Maguire losing his powers is that he has lots of signs of PTSD so like when he loses his powers he's going through a lot of struggles but as the film goes on he focuses on his life and gets his powers back.

  • @samoan_jedi2075

Tobey lost his powers because it was psychological. A "mental block" if you will because of all the emotional stress and him struggling mentally about wanting to just be a normal person and not being Spider-man ..being Spider-man was literally destroying his life and was questioning whether he wanted to be Spider-man anymore. And then ultimately decided that he didn't want to anymore. His life was horrible because of it...It wasnt until the third act when he realized that wants to be Spider-man, which was perfectly built up to, and is ultimately freed from the mental block and gains his power back. No offense but that was pretty obvious. Just gotta look deeper, especially to what the doctor tells peter

In Spider-Man far from home, the story with him growin into someone to fill in the shoes of Tony was pretty good to me honestly, there wasn’t just one scene where peter speaks upon it, literally the whole movie was that plot and is even why the villain of the movie almost won because peter didn’t believe he was good enough for the being a super hero but eventually came to realize in the end what he has to do

Great video Eric, especially when you discuss 2004 MJ. As for the villains, I think there is a way to fix the villains in TASM2. First, no Rhino and no Green Goblin. Norman Osborn doesn't die in this movie and has a larger role in the film. Harry contacts Peter to help find a cure for his disease, something that Peter's father and Dr Conners were working on before Peter's father died. Norman starts his own research on curing his disease, by becoming a super villain. But before he uses it on himself, he picks a test monkey with poor Max Dillon and he's turned into Electro. After getting his powers he goes outside for help and Spider-Man comes to resolve the issue, but Max doesn't have control over his powers and attacks him in a panicked outburst. Afterwards, Max starts getting control over his powers and then goes to Oscorp in hopes to find a solution there. He then learns Norman used him as a guinea pig and the accident that mutated him was no accident. Because of this, he attacks Norman and Harry in a fit of rage until Spider-Man comes and saves the day, Electro is sent to jail, and it sets up the Norman becoming the Goblin.
That's just how I'd do it.

The reason in Spider-Man 2 his powers disappeared was because peter was getting so sick and so unorganized that it started affecting his health which ended up affecting his powers making them go away. The reason his powers came back was because doc ock gave him that boost of energy to save mj

Spider-Man: Far From Home did deal with the drama of Iron Man's death throughout the entire film plus the reason why Spider-Man gave the E.D.I.T.H. glasses to Mysterio is because he is insecure about Iron Man's death and Beck knows this so he manipulates Peter into seeing him as another mentor for Spider-Man
