    I have the GPD too. For me Nvidia GPUs work with the error script fixer, AMD GPUs work, although some behave oddly with connection speed, ARC is not detected. Note that the GPD Win Max 2 external connector is limited to PCIe 3.0 due to some firmware issue that causes those lanes behaving unstable at 4.0 with CPU boosting (you can force it to 4.0 but it disables CPU boost). The 2230 SSD lanes can be also used and those can work at 4.0 with CPU boost:D On Linux Nvidia does not work (only the open source nouveau which hangs quite often), Arc is not detected, AMD does work.

    Im fascinated by the small form factor devices, but hardware integration is one of the areas many vendors struggl. Even with custom solutions in Windows (see handheld gaming devices not from Valve) and Linux often (it is getting better) struggled with power and device specifics.
    Im really excited to see this journey. I think that the Legion Go with a folding keyboard (ProtoArc) would be my sweet spot, butni havent seen a lot of talk about linux on it.

    I had a GPD Win Max until recently, and I really liked it - it was my "do everything" machine.
    I've since replaced it with a GPD Win Mini and a Framework 13 AMD, both of which I'm also loving. The framework is a little bit better for coding on and general PC use, meanwhile the Win Mini fits in my pocket and runs Cyberpunk 2077!
    But, if I had to use just one device, I'd go back to the GPD Win Max.

  • @DannyWelch
    @DannyWelch 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    I use the GPD WinMax 2 (7840u/64GB/6TB) as my main machine for both work and personal use. When at home, I dock it with the G1 using the 80W BIOS. Performance has been great for all of the games that I play at 1080p/60. It's really hard to beat the WM2 for portability. Performance and battery life are incredible for the size. I have large hands, so the size of the device for handheld gaming is no problem and I find it more comfortable than smaller devices like the Switch. If you're a fan of performance/watt and portability, the GPD WM2 is definitely worth a look. I had the LTE module in my last WM2 and wasn't happy with the performance, so I didn't get it with the 7840u model. Mobile hotspot is working well.

      If you have the GPD Win 2, the new GPD Win Mini is truly amazing, mine arrived about three weeks ago, same processor as the Win Max 2023, and up to a 64GB RAM... because you can, of course.
      I have two Win 2s, first one stopped working (battery and charging issues) and so I bought a one off eBay I liked it so much, and it turned out to be the newer m3-8100y rather than the m3-7y30, and empirically it certainly performed better. But the Win Mini is a whole new ball game.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The keyboard is great. The only niggle is the spacebar, which requires that you hit it within the centre third of the bar for reliable actuation. If you hit it on the edges, especially when lacking any gusto, it's likely not to register. I adjusted pretty quickly though and can now type without issue. The rest of the keys are fantastic, and the spacebar is fine once you learn the positioning to hit it reliably.

    For what it's worth Wendell I had all kinds of issues with the fingerprint reader on Windows as well until I found the tip to register your finger/thumb multiple times as different fingers (ideally different parts of it too) - the fingerprint reader just struggles to capture the same part of your digit each time due to the swipe you need to do, so if you give it multiple versions to work with it has a better chance of matching. As far as I can tell it also insists on swiping downwards, which is kind of awkward on a table given the location but doable when handheld

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@FS-zt6tm this is the real trick. I guess Windows just hasn't updated their instructions since the days of the old "roller" fingerprint sensors. If you just tap repeatedly the same way you would actually tap when trying to use the sensor, it registers the print perfectly and it will work pretty much without issue. My Win Max 2 registers my fingerprint every time now after doing it this way, whereas it didn't work at all when following the "swipe" instructions.

      @nezbrun872 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I quite like the Pocket 3 but I don't use it as much as I expected. The keyboard layout isn't anywhere near as good as the Win Max series and it doesn't really fit in any pockets except for those in a coat, and even then not all coats. I wish they'd come out with some other modules for it.
      True, the KVM is handy sometimes, but it's HDMI, not VGA, so it's of limited use on a server farm. The supporting software is pretty basic too. So typically I go old school and get out the crash cart.
      It's truly amazing tech though, the i7 1195G7 was the step change these UMPCs needed.

    I have a GPD G1 and the use case is to travel in my bag along with my zenbook flip when I am away, using Thunderbolt. It works really well, much better than an Nvidia eGPU.
    I did test it against an RTX3070 in a Razor Core X eGPU box and the 7600M XT was just shy of it performance wise.
    Yes Thunderbolt is a bottleneck but you can still play most games.
    We just need AMD to get FSR3 into games, then we should see an even better experiance.

    A very nice video Wendell, and through the camera work and cuts it is even more personal 👌🏻These CPUs are also "AI capable" or so AMD says. Could anyone please recommend a short well shielded oculink cable, the oculink with my Win max 2 2022 and GPD G1 does not work very well, and Wendell said he had to use a shorter oculink cable to make his work as well. Even if my oculink connection create havoc, the USB4 and GPD G1 works very well with both my USB4 laptops. Not sure of the Win max 2 2023 but on my WM2 2022 the USB4 port is your rigth hand USB-C connector facing the keyboard so Wendell seems to be using the wrong USB-C port trying to get USB4 connectivity while also using oculink cable even if the USB4 connection is not used for transfer of egpu data.

    I got the previous gen max 2 with the 6800u, and honestly love it, I use it for all sorts of crap, and I've ran more flavors of linux than with probably any other machine I own. It handles blender just fine, and that made the engineers at my job crap themselves to see this tiny machine doing the same sort of work as their z books. I too have thought about making a coat, or a belt attachment for this thing because it's so much compute and connectivity for it's size. I have a dvd and sata adapter for my type c, and it's the best Swiss army knife of computers I've used. My gripes are with not being able to find a service provider for the 4g module I actually bought on Aliexpress after I got it, and the screen resolution should have been lower, and with a higher refresh rate, 60hz just feels a bit dumb for a gaming first device.

    I have a 7840HS on a gaming laptop which also features a 4060. The cpu is, I shit you not, destroys my 5800X3D in every benchmark, they have fucking avx 512 on that little thing too. You might say damn that's a good 55W cpu. Well it's an APU as AMD calls it, it has the best iGPU to date, the 780m. There are two hardware AV1 encoders on that laptop. AMD really killed intel this time. I mean there isn't anything Intel is better at than AMD right now, except for heating performance.

    Can the eGPU be used for video transcoding when connected to an older server class motherboard that has PCIe but doesn't have M.2/USB4/Thunderbolt/etc, and doesn't have a motherboard GPU/CPU/Chipset capable of video transcoding? For example: by using a PCIe to thunderbolt or M.2 adapter card -> eGPU.

    • @bosstowndynamics5488
      @bosstowndynamics5488 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Well Oculink is actually an internal server connector that's been adapted for external use here so there's no reason you couldn't connect it to a server, it's just not a great way to upgrade a server GPU since it's an expensive mobile GPU

    • @mjmeans7983
      @mjmeans7983 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm looking to make an old server into a media server using something like JellyFin. However, the server's BIOS doesn't permit access to the internal Intel CPUs HVEC (HP Gen8 Microserver locks this out to implement iLO). And the single PCIe slot also with a AMD low profile GPU also fails for transcoding for the same reason. So, I have to look for some other way to do HVEC transcoding and was hoping a M.2 or Thunderbolt bridge would bypass the BIOS/iLO limitations.

    • @nickthaskater
      @nickthaskater 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Not really, since it doesn't fold flat against a desk. You can if you want, but it's not particularly ergonomic. Good in a pinch to sign a document or something, I guess.

    • @victortitov1740
      @victortitov1740 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      i'd say, it's impractical, because the surface pen technology is utter trash. Not gpd's fault, it's trash on just about everything... but its trashiness is even more troublesome due to screen being small.

    AMD does not have the mind or market share for them them to develop a hardware interface standard that is going to go anywhere. Intel being partnered with Apple did a lot to promote industry support of Thunderbolt. Microsoft forced Intel to adopt AMD64/X86-64 compatibility, because legacy support is their bread and butter. There aren't really masses of consumers even in need of thunderbolt, let alone something that could be better but with an AMD stamp on it. And I own 2 AMD boards with TB3 and TB4, and a 5800H laptop without either. I'm certainly somewhat a fan of AMD products, but also a realist.

    I wish we could get decent Thunderbolt docks @ work, but we're stuck with the crap Dell tosses out for too much money and hit or miss performance with their laptops. Never mind that their USB docks are laughably bad, and their laptops don't seem to have enough USB controllers or bandwidth (or both) to actually work properly with a dock, webcam and wireless keyboard/mouse dongle.
