  • Prone position for COVID-19 patients is highly recommended.
COVID-19 patients commonly have a collection of fluid collection within the alveoli (small air sacs). This causes difficulty in the alveoli to conduct gaseous exchange and thus limits the lung’s ability to expand.
This fluid is collected at the base of the lungs. The base of the lungs have the highest number of alveoli.
Prone position is crucial as it equally distributes the fluid collected within the lungs, ensuring it does not collect at the base of the lungs. This exposes the large number of alveoli at the base of the lungs, which increases gas exchange and oxygenation, resulting in better breathing! Further, prone position off-loads the weight of the heart on the lungs and abdominal content, allowing more space for the lungs to expand.
    Breath Stacking Technique
    • This technique helps with the intake of more oxygen than normal inspiration. Further it helps in mobilisation of secretions.
