    This Video is part of the get good at blender series. probably about level 3/10 for difficulty so a good understanding of the interface will help a lot but still at a nice easy level suitable for beginners. We make some interesting crystals and go through lots of different blender techniques to help you learn and get better at blender.

    Thanks to you for helping me get into Blender a couple of year ago. I still stop in from time to to time to see what you're up to. And in this case, I wanted to see what kind of crazy shader you were using to get the final look. Ha! You totally tricked me with putting a colored light inside. So simple, but effective! Glad I stuck around anyway because this is a really well-done and well-explained video. Thanks again.

    What also almost looks great on transparent materials is to add a solidify modifier at the end with some thickness. This pimps up the inner reflections a lot.

    This provided a great jumping off point to start modeling crystals. It helps to just see a general method of doing something, then I run off and do a bunch of searching on the actual thing and see how I can apply that general method to more specific references. Your contribution to this/these communities is invaluable, thank you!

    How did you read my mind?? I've had an idea for a crystal cave scene I've been trying to make and haven't been able to get the crystals right and all the tutorials were not the style I wanted. Now you drop this perfect tutorial for exactly what I was after just before I was about to shelve the project for later. Thanks Grant!

    Amazing! Thank you so much for this tutorial. I love love love having you encouraging us to try it first before seeing how you do it. The bevel trick is incredible.

    ❤ Love the video!
    The quick hot key modeling and editing process was great ‘gg’ is definitely going in my toolbox.
    One side note of no real consequence: Most quarts crystals don’t have as much variation as you included.
    These are more video game crystals. But knowing how to make them is the important part and you 💯nailed it 👍.

    One thing I did to start off was to put a sub surf mod on a stretched sphere then used the decimate modifier. I then dissolved some vertices where needed. It was quick and easy.

    Also, right clicking after making a loop cut centers it automatically. I'm sure you know that, but I thought I'd mention it just in case there's anyone who didn't know that

    What I do is...uhm add a cube make it into a Cuboid...add a Subdivision modifier...apply it...and then add a decimate modifier...and bring down the topology...

    Thank you so much for the tutorial. I've always been fascinated about gems and crystals and I'll surely use this tutorial to make my own shiny crystals. I will be grateful if you can upload any tutorial about creating low poly diamonds and some other gem cuts and shading them. It would help me very much. .

    Hello, hope all is well. So, I'm a huge noob with Blender and use it very rarely since I just don't have the skills to do what I want and I'm usually YouTub'ing' tutorials when I need something. I am quite proficient in AE and I find not being proficient in Blender can hinder some work I want to do. Looking through your videos and the courses you offer, I see quite a few options. I need to get the Blender skillset ramped up to improve what I can offer and create to compliment what I do. What would be the ideal path starting fresh from start to finish? I'll def be enrolling in the courses but just don't know the best path - TH-cam first and then courses? Or straight into courses with TH-cam as fillers along the way? I'm a person that is all about structure and would love to outline a path and roadmap with the correct path. Thanks again Grant, great work and excited to jump in and learn from ya.

    Hey Grant, I'm stuck on the bool tool operation, the glitch you mentioned is being persistent and the two solutions you provided are not fixing the problem. I could just use the boolean mod for each object like you said but I want to know how to fix this problem for my future projects. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also thanks for the video, I find all your tutorials to be very educational for me as a beginner in Blender so thanks for all the help.

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It's a tricky one. It's likely one of the objects is the problem, but it's trial and error figuring out which one

    • @mr.underhill8151
      @mr.underhill8151 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@grabbitt Fixed the problem. Started over using a five sided cylinder instead of a cube and I was using the fill button to bridge gaps between faces the first time so I think that might have messed me up. Thanks again for the help.

    If I export this to Unity - will it keep the color/light - generally all the effect of crystal?
    Or it's better to do it from scratch in Unity?

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Probably easier to texture in unity

    Probably the easiest way to make crystal shape is
    Add Cube -> Ctrl + 1 to add 1 level subdivision -> apply subdivision -> Scultping -> G -> Pull up points -> make cryal shape -> duplicate and sculpt for variations.
    making a cube and adding subdivions and then doing it via edit mode is too much work.

    • @grabbitt
      @grabbitt  3 หลายเดือนก่อน
