We live in Hawaii, so my cats are used to it. I used to worry about it but I did some research and learned that cats can handle quite a lot of heat compared to us humans. I've never seen them panting or uncomfortable. My fat cat likes to sleep on her back with all four legs spread out though.

  • @PrinceDuCiel7

I had to leave my home. When even getting up had my fluffy cat panting and my elderly cat started just, not responding when I petted him, time to flee. Carted six cats to my Mom's house.
I REALLY hope the tempts don't get like that again Ever.

One of my cats refuses to eat wet food, so I got her a fountain. This single device has made a huge difference with her drinking, as she will stop by multiple times a day and take a hearty sip. The reservoir gets cleaned, changed and refilled every 2-3 days so it stays nice and clean (and apparently flavorful for her). I bought an Orsda stainless steel model and it has been a game changer for the girl. The other cat eats wet food, occasionally samples the stream and lounges in our Florida heat and humidity most of the day with no ill effects. The vets say they're both healthy and they seem very happy. Mission accomplished.

  • @spaceseijo

One day we we found our 15 y-o cat curled up in a really strange spot for him, not really reacting to pets, etc. Fearing heat exhaustion, since he had just been outside, we did the water trick. The cat didn't like that and tried to move away, which is when we saw that he couldn't move his back legs. We immediately took him to the local vet, he was docile like he NEVER is at the vet, I was almost crying. The vet takes her out of her cage and she's wobbly and stiff but walking. When 20 minutes ago she had been dragging her back legs behind her. The vet gave her some blood thinning painkillers, in case it had been a mini-stroke and told us to keep the cat inside on the really hot days just in case. Never found out what was actually wrong with her, but afterwards she slept for the rest of the day in the coolest part of the house. I gave her her medicine for three days but she was pretty much back to her old self by the next day. Cats are weird.

She'd never done it before, so we raced her to our local air-conditioned vet. Within minutes of being there, her panting stopped. We asked for her stay there overnight, as our home was still baking hot (45°C / 113°F)

One of my cats who is no longer with us, loved hot weather. I know cats typically like hot weather though but she really, really liked it. The hotter the better for her. She would go outside in the boiling heat and sit around for hours. We always had a bowl of water outside for her and we checked on her regularly while she was outside. She was always happy as can be in the heat. Sometimes she would stay out until late at night and we would have to pick her up and bring her inside because she just wouldn’t move.

I have a complete black cat and it's my first black cat. And the heatwave we had this summer made me really worry. cause it seemed like black cats do have a harder time in the summertime. But I found some stuff to help out. I put water in a bowl and put some of her favorit toys in it so she could splash and dip her paws in the water and she liked it eventually. I bought a coolingpad and put iceclamps under her bedding in her little cathouse outside. and when she got hot I put a moist towel on her while she laid down. I might have gone a little overboard. But I think it helped and maybe they are some good tips and trick for other cats aswell. :)

Freeze dried raw food is good. You can reconstitute it. It is healful unlike canned food.

Shortly after this posted we had Hurricane Ida - and two weeks of no power in 100 degree heat w/ high humidity. All the central air was useless. Wish I’d known this then.

Thanks for this!! I’m in Texas and it’s only going to get hotter, so this is perfect. Also! I recently saw an ad for a new purina cat food called “Pro Plan LiveClear” that’s apparently supposed to reduce an allergic reaction in humans to their cats. I’m going to do some research on my own, but I was curious if you could put in your two cents on this new product? Thank you!!!!!!

We have a water fountain and 2 other water dishes to make sure wherever the cat is, there's a water dish nearby.

Helpful Vancouver Vet, I'm in Toronto and the summers here are brutal. I do use a mist bottle and my cat and other that has now passed love/d it. I first started with a washcloth soaked in cold water and wrung out and gave them a full rub down. I slowly one day worked up to a misting bottle and they took to it immediately and to the point I'd call them over and they'd come stand to get misted to the point their fur was dripping.

We got a a/c and they are obsessed with it... they lie around it like it’s a monolith from the movie 2001: a space odyssey 😻😻😻

Thankyou. Will be really useful for us in the next predicted heatwave in the UK in a few weeks. My daughter was freezing kitchen towel and putting it over cats body in the last one but i like your suggestions better

"When its hot cats might eat less"
Mine halved her wet food intake and eats almost exclusively at night since the summer got hot.
Should I be worried that she went from 6 oz to 3 oz per day? Could this also be regulating body weight?

Not really cause to be worried, especially if cat is overweight.

my cat used to be stray, she loves the wet weather and always goes out into it (I think bugs come out in the rain so she probably used to eat them then). In summer she doesn't mind getting spritzed by I wasn't holding her under the hose, but put it on mist pointing near her and she walked under it until she was almost soaking (inner fur didn't really seem to get soaked though).
