How I love watching you interact with Mr. Pirate. I just lost my darling little girl at 15. She was 2 months short of her 16th birthday. I miss her terribly. In fact I am at a loss. Her sister is still with us, but I had a very special bond with my Peep. She was at my side almost all the time and used to lie up against me with her arm thrown around my neck and she would wash my chin and neck. It was heaven. I really love your videos and have learned quite a lot. Take care. Pat in New Jersey
Hey Pat, I’m so sorry for your loss. I was devastated when I lost my 19 year old kitty. I’m glad Peeps’ sister is with you. Where I am (United Kingdom) we have a major charity called the Blue Cross. They operate a pet bereavement service in addition to their vet services and animal welfare work. I’m sure New Jersey must have similar groups. Please don’t be afraid to reach out to one if your struggling.
She sounds similar to my furry young man, except that he gets himself so excited when he grooms me that he always gets a little nippy and I have to stop the session so he can calm down by sleeping on my feet. Whichever of us leaves this world first will leave the other heartbroken. Sometimes a particular pet and a particular human are just the world to each other. It sounds like that is how it was for you and Peep. May you and Peep's sister be able to get each other through this loss.
I've always been lucky enough to have kitties who learn to trust me and offer up the goods. The current lady seems to like the tops of a flight of stairs; she'll get down on the landing and roll over to show off her tum. I laugh at her and coo, "Look at the belly!!" (which usually comes out as more of an excited "Lookadabelleee!") and she lets me do as I please for a little while. The best is when she lets me get my face right in there and snorgle in all the floof. You've got to time it right so that she's not getting impatient - that would be a great recipe for getting a bunny kick to the face - but it's so very worth it.
Mr. Pirate has such beautiful colors, marking, and patterns. He’s a handsome kitty. My calico cat has always loved getting her belly rubbed. A lot of the times she’ll just drop hard to her side when she wants me to pet her. She’s the best, She loves the pads of of feet rubbed too.
your advice about "warning shots" with gentle biting is great. one of mine gives gentle warning nibbles when i'm trimming his claws. i need to listen more and give him breaks between trimmings so i'm not pushing his boundaries too far.
1. foot : trimming claws , she was a good girl. 2.foot : trimming claws, she still was a good girl 3.foot: trimming claws , she started to roar ! 4.foot trimming claws, she started roaring and hissing. I always cuddled and kissed her and all was well again. ♥️🐈♥️🐈♥️🐈♥️
My cat Miles is nearly 19 and we get to enjoy some tummy strokes and a gentle brushing to help with grooming. Can't resist that soft soft belly she has!
My husband and I are some of the most honored people ever. We have 2 cats that offer up their fluffy tummies to us constantly, everyday to be stroked, patted and petted. I'm not quite sure what we did to deserve this high honor, but we're grateful!
4:06 I have that book too, it was a birthday gift from a friend and it's awesome! I have two cats, one doesn't really like belly pets but allows it every so often (and gently pushes your hand away otherwise), the other oh boy, he LOVES it. Can't get enough. He will literally flop on his back and present his belly for pets.
I think I got that book for a birthday gift too at some point. The thing about the ears is 100% accurate. The flatter and more pointed backwards they are, the more pain you're about to be in lol.
Mr Pirate is so wonderful. We have 2 cats (siblings!) and one will tolerate tummy petting and really any kind of petting, she’s very docile but maybe doesn’t really *want* to be pet on that vulnerable belly-the other though...in your dreams! I will try these techniques though, if only to build our bond!
He is so cute! And he has so much trust in you, it's amazing! I love the way you treat your cats with such affection and gentleness. Thank you for sharing such lovely videos🙏
when i was a kid we had these 2 baby kittens and i would put them on my lap, 1 kitty on each leg and on it's back, just hold them with my arm and pet their belly and they loved it! and after just a few days they would jump on my lap and lay on their back with their arms up on their own, it was so cute i couldn't believe it haha
A neighbor's cat used to come visit me. From the very first visit, he/she would let me stroke its belly. In fact, the minute I touched it, the cat would roll onto its back for me. It was incredibly fluffy, and a real purr machine too. I only lived beside the cat for a few months, but truly looked forward to its nightly visits. A real treat for me, and I like to think the cat enjoyed it as much.
Our rescue kitty of 3 years has long been offering her belly to us. It’s her way of greeting us - chirrip, a stretch and then belly rub. She’s very prescriptive in her habits and behavior. My husband, long been a cat daddy, has taught me how to speak cat. It’s incredibly rewarding ❤️
How I laughed when that little kitty ear appeared at the edge of the screen. 😺 I have the great privilege of being able to frequently stroke my cat Derek's belly with no issues at all, at least so far! He flops on the floor right in front of me and asks for it, much to my parents envy as they worry about getting 'the curse of the claw'! Another great video, many thanks.
@@HelpfulVancouverVet LOL....yep, he had a previous owner who picked that doozy of a name for him. I'm not sure he is impressed with it as he never responds and just walks away in disgust! 😹🤣
I love how Mr Pirate trusts him 100% and Dr Uri is always so gentle. It's a mutual relationship that makes both of their lives more meaningful. Mr Pirate is 17 years old and seems so healthy. It is wonderful.
You're totally right about how long it can take for them to get comfortable with letting you touch their tummy! My cat is about nine years old, and we've had her since she was about six months old... in the last few months, she finally started letting me touch and pet her tummy!! It's only on her terms and only when she feels like it, but when she lets me, she LOVES it! She used to NEVER let me! I did exactly what you said to do and it finally paid off. :) As always, thank you for your videos! I love you and your sweet kitties! & I ADORE how much you love them and they love you!
So nice to see Lancelot! I love how you say, wait 2-3 years, or a decade! Because it's so true! I have a rescue cat ( adopted at 10 months) who is a biter. I found cat behaviourists prescribed clonicalm. The administration of the tablet every day was just ruining our relationship more! I am a psychologist and I used my behavioural distress tolerance techniques to gradually widen my cat's window of tolerance. It's 18 months later and he only bites occasionally and even allows a tummy petting from time to time! He's actually very affectionate but has hyper vigilance and his alarm can be a bit hair trigger.
Dr. Uri, you are so funny 🤣🤣 "it can take from 3 days to 15 years" to get it right. And I agree with you. I'm still learning with both my cats, Sophia Loren and Angelina Jolie are going on 12 years old, not very successful but gaining some points here and there. I will practice your technique and I pray thatt my fur babies can look as happy and content as Mr. Pirate and I see a peek of Clawdia trying to get in on the action! Love those two! Bless you always for all your wonderful work.😻👏👏👏🤗
That was so lovely! Particularly the little kiss - so cute. If only my cat would let me stroke its tummy. So I am going to try everything you have said and fingers-crossed it may happen.
Thanks for the tip about keeping your hand still! I am looking down at the tiny scratch on my hand that could have been retrospectively avoided haha. Thought this was an April Fools video (I am assuming everything is today) but it was surprisingly very helpful!
Yes to all of this! Kitties tell us what they think with sometimes quite subtle body language, but they do tell us. Watch while interacting and if the tail twitches, the pupils change, you get nibbles or holding, just relax and stop. One of my cats is easily overstimulated so I keep an eye out while petting her, sometimes just resting my hand on a neutral location to see whether pets may continue, and I do get to pet the amazing belly, but we’ve lived together a long time now.
Love this! We have 4 cats and they all have very different opinions about tummy pats. One absolutely loves it, one wants tummy pats only just after waking up from a nap when she stretches out on the bed, the third will poke you repeatedly and then turn over on her back if she feels like a rub and the fourth doesn't want her belly touched--ever. Needless to say, we've learned to read their signals pretty quickly.
My Feliks allows me to pet his belly, his lovely sister also allowed me to pet her glorious belly, I miss her soft and calm demeanor. They came to me after being rescued from an abandoned house in Athens, Greece. And for some reason, I’m sure they were both extremely grateful to their foster and later me, that once they understood they were safe with me, they trusted me fully. Even clipping nails isn’t a fight.
What a great video! My husband and I love how much you love your cats. The subtle humor in this presentation was really entertaining... And so true! Mr. Pirate adores you... It's just the most beautiful thing to watch. 😻
Sound &Very Funny! A street kitty came to me. It was jet black domestic long hair polydactyl. It demonstrated that it was clearly not feral. MaoMao was how I called him/her before we went to Vet to be neutered & vaccinated. Turned out he was already neutered! A drop off? He survived the audition with the gang & came mostly inside. Imagine my surprise when he immediately offered me his tummy! He has fluffy diffuse white & black hair (gray) on his underside. 'Gray pits' came to mind, but he was already MaoMao. He will roll over and want to be petted/rubbed from his pits to his tummy. He purrs & drools. Very gratifying! You are right when you describe this holy grail for cat lovers. I adore him. Thank you for your channel & kind demeanor. Bright Blessing Always!
What a great demonstration and tutorial! My youngest cat has always been very trusting and open to belly cuddles, while my male cat is trickier. It's easy to tell by reading him that he does enjoy a little belly rub, but his instincts always kick in, and he will hold me for a few seconds with his claws, just like you said. But he never tries to hurt me. Just giving a clear message. I believe learning to read your cat is the single most important thing you can do for your furry friend. Thank you for your most informative and humorous videos on cats, and tell Mr. Pirate he's a very adorable cat ❤
This reminds me not of a cat story but about a story about my bird, who was neglected, when I got to reach the petting zone of his neck and head, never felt so satisfied before, touching the precious fluffy heaven of his head feathers. Can’t wait to form a bonds like this with other animals like cats in the future if they feel like it.
"What you are really looking for is for is a lack of attention". Isn't this the normal state for a cat?? LOL! Not really I know as I have had cats around all my life and am happier for it. Keep up the good vids Doc, they DO help people understand our fur friends!🐱
Somewhere around three years, and we didn't ask. He invited, and we accepted the bait, warily. He began a habit of just flopping and baring his belly for petting. We have two siblings, and it was the less outgoing cat that decided he would like to have his belly petted. There are times when the flop is not for us, or he changes his mind; he just changes positions usually, but he used to give the clutchee warning. Our other cat conformed to your video description, and I responded properly by accident. He never asks for belly petting, but he is often agreeable.
I love Mr. Pirate. I always believe you can tell the quality of a person by how cats treat them - I think that the love Mr. Pirate shows you demonstrates the world of good you have done for animals. Thank you!

2.foot : trimming claws, she still was a good girl
3.foot: trimming claws , she started to roar !
4.foot trimming claws, she started roaring and hissing.
I always cuddled and kissed her and all was well again.
♥️🐈♥️🐈♥️🐈♥️
I’m literally obsessed with this lovely human being
The part at 8:10 mr pirate looks at the camera like, hey ! 😃❤️What an adorable squishy cat
OMG THIS BABY! he is so calm and chill having his tummy rubbed. i love him
i think im gonna just come back here every once in a while to feel better about my day. its just such a pure video.
Two very lovable personalities!
I had the most trusting cat ever. He let me fiddle with his primordial pouch, it was so cute. :D
Mr. Pirate is one of the sweetest cat ever! He also looks great for his age, thanks to you! Thank you for your informative videos :D
Thank you for being so helpful, considerate, and downright deadpan funny in your quest to help humans coexist peacefully with their feline companions
Mr pirate is such a well behaved boy
TH-cam is such a golden collection of life-changing tutorials...
Most helpful video on internet 😀
And just like that, when we needed him the most.
Look at Mr Pirate’s shiny coat. You know he is as healthy as he can be given his conditions and well taken care of.
Mr Pirate is such a sweet docile cat and the vet has a great sense of humour. I had a good chuckle with this video. Thanks for posting doc :)
1:15 I love it when a cat gets stroked a bit firmly like that so that it stretches the eyes a little.
I have the great privilege of being able to frequently stroke my cat Derek's belly with no issues at all, at least so far! He flops on the floor right in front of me and asks for it, much to my parents envy as they worry about getting 'the curse of the claw'!
Another great video, many thanks.
Derek! 😹
This is the most important video on the internet
Respect, this is one of the best ads i have ever seen.
Mr. Pirate is the real star of this channel 😍😍😍😍😍😍
That was never in doubt *Clawdia slams dressing room door*
You're totally right about how long it can take for them to get comfortable with letting you touch their tummy! My cat is about nine years old, and we've had her since she was about six months old... in the last few months, she finally started letting me touch and pet her tummy!! It's only on her terms and only when she feels like it, but when she lets me, she LOVES it! She used to NEVER let me! I did exactly what you said to do and it finally paid off. :)
As always, thank you for your videos!
I’ve never seen a cat THIS loving and trusting. 💓
You and Mr Pirate are the best, he's such a cutie and mellow too!
Thanks for the tip about keeping your hand still! I am looking down at the tiny scratch on my hand that could have been retrospectively avoided haha. Thought this was an April Fools video (I am assuming everything is today) but it was surprisingly very helpful!
I try to be consistently helpful :-)
Mr Pirate looks so relaxed and happy being petted. He's a very happy little cat :)
He quoted The Oatmeal! I love this man!
I love the way Mr Pirate puts his little leg over your arm 💕
I love how much you love Mr Pirate, and how much he loves you 😍😻
What a great video! My husband and I love how much you love your cats. The subtle humor in this presentation was really entertaining... And so true! Mr. Pirate adores you... It's just the most beautiful thing to watch. 😻
I don't have much difficulty giving my cat belly rubs.
I just watch this channel because those are some of my favourite youtube videos ever.
I am happy to state that despite all my short comings I am a natural when it comes to pet petting.
I'm old enough to remember -- there WAS NOT INTERNET!
You and various colleagues have helped me take care of my cats SO much better.
I am faithful to this channel. I really do love you both. This is one channel I even sit through all the commercials without skipping them.
Pirate is so mellow, what a chill cat. I love Clawdia's commercial break too.
As a fellow Aussie, Mr Pirate is a wonderful ambassador! He’s a wonderful cat.
Mr. Pirate is such a good boye
That is the chillest cat I’ve ever seen.
I love Mr. Pirate. I always believe you can tell the quality of a person by how cats treat them - I think that the love Mr. Pirate shows you demonstrates the world of good you have done for animals. Thank you!
this is the bravest man alive
And then our weird cats regularly roll over for even strangers and meow for tummy rubs 😂😂😂
Pirate has such a beautiful coat!
This is the most chill cat of all time
That kitty loves you so, so much, Dr. Uri!
This is the quality content I want from the internet.
3 years later still this guy never changed squish that cat 🐈
