    Here's something else I'd like to bring up: When a person new to a game is learning the controls, how often do they have to look at the controller? With the Gamecube, people who were learning the controls can associate the shapes with the buttons a lot faster. I'm not a big playstation gamer so I have a hard time remembering where the buttons are when I play a playstation occasionally. With the gamecube controller, even if I were unfamiliar with it, the shape of the button on the screen would give me quick and easy information about what it's shaped like and where it is.
    It's not a big thing. Buttons aren't that hard to memorize, but it's something I always liked.

    The fact that you can use the GC controller on 4 different console generations (GC, Wii, WiiU, Switch) is mind blowing.

    They need a new GameCube controller with a better d-pad, two Z buttons, and a smoother C-stick.

      Some Gamecube controllers do have two Z buttons, but they're probably not official. I have one like that, the one on the left side is called the M button.

    The GameCube controller is still one of my favorite controllers of the history of videogames. This video is perfect for explaining why it was so great so thanks for that. (Now if no one believes me I can just send them this video instead of rambling).

    I always found the Gamecube controller to be really crappy in shooters but the thought of playing F-Zero GX with a PS2 controller is pretty horrifying to say the least.
    It's a solid controller no doubt, better than the N64 and the Wii/Wii U controllers. and that thing never breaks. You can throw it off a cliff and it wouldn't break.

    • @jimmymcsweeney
      @jimmymcsweeney 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agreed. Playing shooters with it isn't the best.

    • @amihartz
      @amihartz 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      My GameCube controllers kept breaking... well, specifically the analogue stick. It'd become off-center after awhile then simply stop being precise at all. I only have 1 GC controller that still works.

    GC controller is cool and all, but I'm wondering if their was any way to make it better. I would make a bigger "nub" for the C Stick, replace the D Pad with the one on the 3DS, remove the Z Button and add L and R 1 buttons. Also a home button and a select button. The new GC controller would have the battery life of the Wii U Pro Controller and would be wireless aswell, or have a USB wire included to be plugged into the console for better control. For a finishing touch, I would also add a small memory card inside the controller to save info on it (Such as custom control settings for Smash so you don't have to re enter them of when you go to a tournament/ friends house) It would basically be a combo of the GC and Wii U Pro Controllers, taking the best aspects of them and making the ultimate controller to play Nintendo games.

    I've always thought the Gamecube had the best controller. In retrospect, it's like the controller had the same improvement of quality and smoothness that the games did once they mastered 3D gaming by the end of the N64 era. I don't think any gaming system I've played ever felt like such an immediate improvement to its predecessor to me (and I say that as a hardcore N64 fan). Though I guess it helps that nothing since then has come close to having such high quality, new titles in its first couple of months.

    Imagine a GC controller with a proper right stick, 3DS D-pad, and Xbox triggers, but with the GC "click". Oh, and Select, Capture, and System Menu (Home, Xbox, PS) Buttons. Now cut out the center and make it into Joycons.

    I really disagree about how the Gamecube controller it's perfect for every videogame. The whole thing it's very specifically designed for it's own games, so in the end everything else feels weird on it. Tradicional fighting games, 2d platforms, convencional fps, Hack & Slash...all these genres that the system lacked. All it's about how weird and non-standard the thing is. The tiny right stick, the even smaller d pad, that bizarre button location, not having two back buttons. It makes the controller feel dated and niche while Sony and Xbox designs have been pretty much the standard for every generation.

  • @Sir_Robin_of_Camelot
    @Sir_Robin_of_Camelot 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's bad for twin stick shooters, but great for everything else.
    Fzero GX - this would unplayable without the precise analog triggers
    Soul Calibur 2 - button layout makes multibutton presses easy
    Melee - C stick perfect for quick smash/Aerials, low resistance left stick for fast movements, button placement for fast Aerials.
    Really the only things I would change are a second Z button, bigger d-pad, and slightly bigger rounded c stick.

  • @suicideposter
    @suicideposter 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    It is really comfortable in your hands which is weird because it quite possibly has the worst D pad ever made, and it's a chore to quickly tap the L and R buttons.

  • @Soulessblur
    @Soulessblur 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I hate to be that guy, but the face button layout never jived with me. I can see where it has objective advantages to certain specific titles (and, funny enough, when my Pro Controller broke I used a Powera Gamecube controller to finish my playthrough of Dark Souls Remastered, and i was surprised how intuitive it felt, and it's probably the only video game I've evern enjoyed using the controller on), but in terms of general use, and even most of those titles people conventionally use the gamecube controller for, was always just alien to me. Trying to press literally any button other than A took more thumb travel than I would've liked to press with the base of my thumb, and the buttons were so skinny that rolling my thumb to press them just felt uncomfortable to perform. Sure, the A button was okay, a comically big button you can smash to your hearts content. But even in games that used the A button dominantly, anytime I had to use B, X, or Y it was bothersome and took me out of the game. I know most people's complaints with the controller come from a production standpoint: The spongy buttons, the weird C-Stick, and only one, crappy Z button. And those issues are more or less resolved with future productions or 3rd party recreations, but none of those things ever bothered me nearly as much as the basic design around the face buttons, which ruin the overall experience for me despite some very interesting decisions they made in other parts of the controller, like joystick grooves. It feels good to hold, until I have to actually play with it.
    TL;DR The GC Controller is not my cup of tea, due to my personal preference to the cross button layout.
    Thank you for coming to my TEDx talk

    @JadeMythriil 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I never used a gamecube controller but I can easily see what makes it great. The A being the jump button requires it to be easy to reach at all times. Most cross layout buttons only have access to two easy access adjacent buttons as going across the two adjacent buttons to reach the opposite button is awkward. I've certainly felt awkward doing that with some games like the old control scheme of megaman x games that had the special weapon button opposite of the jump button. Only when I played megaman zero did I find an alternate control scheme using shoulder buttons but that removed the ability to easily switch special weapons.

    Not every Nintendo fan loves the GC controller that much. Remember, the most successful Nintendo Console is the DS, so ABXY (Cross), +Pad, LR and Start/Select is still achetype of all modern Nintendo consoles, because the layouts of the Wii (Pro) 3DS, Wii U and (more or less) Switch are based on it. The DS layout itself is based on the GBA, which is based on both GB and SNES.

    Honestly, i just want the NX to have a 2nd Gamecube controller. It's been long enough Nintendo, and it's probably inevitable that they're gonna have another "gimmick" controller, but at least instead of the classic controllers or pro controller or whatever you call them, have a remodeled Gamecube controller. Basically, an Gamecube controller with a real dpad, a L1 and R1 instead of just the Z button, a real second stick. Basically, an xbox 1 controller with the Gamecube face buttons and the gamecube syle of triggers where it's both analogue and digital.

    you can't really say it had great ergonomics and show melee in the same video. there's a reason why melee is the only fighting game where ALOT of its pro and aspiring pro players all report that they're hands hurt after playing high levels of smash. some even have carpal tunnel because of it. I myself feel my hand getting stiff after my daily tech practices. the controller simply isn't optimized well for specifically high level melee (which to be honest is the reason why most of us play it). I quit playing melee out of fear of developing carpal tunnel, but with the development of the smash box (which is wayyy better designed for smash) I feel that I might get back into the local scene if it's accepted. if it's deemed illegal I'll still be content with doing the usual friendly at locals.

    • @TakumiJoyconBoyz
      @TakumiJoyconBoyz 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Leffen lived with FGC people and he said he knew people with hand issues who played Street Fighter. The only reason it's not nearly as big of an issue is because Street Fighter is a lower APM game. Also, the Smash Box is designed like a keyboard... you know... the original thing to give people carpal tunnel, including me. It all comes down to people not taking proper breaks, not doing hand stretches and having scrubby nutritional and workout habits. There's actually no evidence of the Smash Box being better for hands at all. In fact it's a higher APM controller and the thing that causes carpal tunnel is repeated movements. The reason some people who have hand problems report less pain is because they aren't doing the motions that caused their original injury. Over time they will develop new injuries that cause pain in new areas if they commit the same mistakes that caused their original injuries. I'm actually in a reverse situation of most people who play Melee. I use a keyboard for work and home purposes so it hurts for me to type or use fight sticks. I can play Melee with no pain at all with a Gamecube controller though. I try to take good care of my hands now though so that I don't repeat the mistakes I did with keyboards.

  • @firch7123
    @firch7123 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    the game cube controller can be perfect for some game but not every kind of games,,,
    2D games using the D pad for exemple,, are not really good with a gc controller,,, cause the D pad of the gc controller is too small and its location isn't greant too,,
    the gc controller is one of the worst controller ever for fighting games especially,, except the d-pad problem,, the button layout isn't good for fighting games,, go play street fighter or mortal combat with a gc controller,, it's awful

    I really don't like the button layout, and triggers on the GC controller.
    on a cross shape design, all buttons are easily accessed from one another, and they're all close enough together for quick and precise motions. the triggers on the GC gamepad just feel wrong. as I hold the controller naturally, the tips of my fingers get pressed against edge the inner dip on each side. and the last knuckle on my fingers are holding it down, which is very uncomfortable. I'm also very glad that controllers instantly moved away from the tiny C-nub. that thing is so gripless that it's pretty much useless when you really count on it. there needs to be an official set of guidelines on what you can use in smash. As in, a more lenient one. Smash box? perfectly okay. Turbo buttons? No. Personally, I want to see a specialized controller with digital triggers that don't kill your fingers, a cross shape layout of the buttons, and four buttons instead of the c-stick. that would make smash so much easier to control. perhaps this legendary controller could come with software to translate button input, but that might add a bit of lag to it.
    the switch Pro controller seems the best way to go for now with smash, I'm loving using it with dolphin.

      Honestly, this video doesn't really point out all the flaws of the gamecube controller. The D-pad placement is uncomfortable, the grips means gripping the thing is awkward as your fingers wrap around, and the C-stick sucks for anything that isn't smash. However, for smash, and a couple other games designed around the controller, there's a lot to like. It's basically product of it's era, nothing wrong with that.

    The Gamecube controller is an abomination. Shooters felt awful with the c-stick, most fighting games felt awkward at best with the tiny d-pad and button placement.
