  • Sailing our Goat Island Skiff in 20-30 knot winds. The sail is reefed all the way down and the boat is very manageable. We later put up full sail and it got pretty exciting.

Great to see how well a Goat will sail in a good breeze. Thanks for the nice Video.

    Great video Simon!
    You handle the conditions nicely.
I would suggest taking the sail up the mast by another 6 inches or so (150mm), just to give a bit more clearance for the centreboard and to make sure the sail doesn't catch the gunwale or something else in the boat during a gybe.
But a very nice example of how reefing makes the boat comfortable in stronger winds.

Great video. I love that part of Avon. I always have to stop by and see what's going on there before I hit the point for a bit of surfing.
I have to plunk down the cash and get my plans for a GIS, and then get the pre-cut kit from Clint.
    Gotta love the Goat.

I think it says a lot about what a good design, careful skipper and right sail area can do in a big wind!

Looks like fun. With the sail reefed all the way down it almost looks like a lateen rig.

Yea man that sail looks nice when hanging to leeward of the mast...if he cut the leech out it could be similar to micronesian/Polynesian clawsail

Another trick is not for both crew to sit in the middle of the boat when it is not tending to heel too much like when you head downwind ... it is better to have one each side as it slows the rolling dramatically. The boat feels much less wobbly. So generally the skipper sits on the windward side of the cockpit floor or on the gunwale ... and the crew sitting on the mid seat moves to the right point to balance them.
