  • This video is about a Melonseed skiff sailing adventure from Hawkesbury, Ontario (Ile du Chenail launch ramp) to Baie Grenville on May 31st, 2024. The skiffs Grenville and Beyefendi explored the entrance of the Grenville Canal before sailing up to the shore of Baie Grenville where we had lunch. The east setting Ottawa River current is much stronger here than on the Lake of Two Mountains. This current and the westerly winds made for a challenging beat upstream. After lunch, we sailed back across the river and followed the shoreline 'round the south side of Hamilton Island before fetching up at the Hawkesbury launch ramp. A lively debrief was held afterwards at Tim Hortons where the crews celebrated their successful cruise with coffee and donuts. You can pause the video just after it starts to peruse a chart of the sailing ground.

@@antoineberthiaume5243 Thanks … glad you enjoyed it! It was a fine day to discover a new sailing ground. Good thing we had a solid breeze otherwise we’d have struggled with that river current! ⛵️😄

What a great sail! A real nice adventure going against wind and current. Your boat would do great sailing from my place up to the J.Cartier bridge! 😎👍

Thanks, couldn’t agree more. The Melonseed skiff has been described as a symphony of curves … a delight to the eye indeed!

I have watched and enjoyed your videos for several years. I own Melonseed #482 and have been sailing the lakes near my home in Austin, Tx. I just recently brought the boat to my beach house in North Padre Island and plan to sail it on the Upper Laguna Madre. I noticed that your boat has a J-back cockpit coating cushion. Would you be so kind as to share some information about where I can purchase this cushion. I tried a store in Rockport, TX but they may have gone out of business. Thanks again for sharing your wonderful videos.

Thanks for watching and glad you’ve enjoyed some of my videos. It’s really hard to make a bad Melonseed video ‘cause the boat is so beautiful to begin with not to mention its delightful sailing characteristics! The cushions are supplied by ccushions.com (“Melonseed J Back cushion”). Hold Fast!

I'm an amateur boat builder from Florida, but I'm thinking of moving to Canada. One thing I've thought about, is that if you capsize that far north, hypothermia must set in really quickly. Is this an issue?

Not a problem in the summer near Montreal but for early spring or late fall sailing I wear a dry suit.

Why don’t you carry the oars the boat was designed to use?

I do have the oars on board (see my previous video) but I find that the paddle is easier to get out and use for a short time. If the wind goes flat and I have a ways to get home then it’s the oars every time. As it happens, Albert used his oars to row out of the canal.
