The TRUTH About Battery Life: Sony a7 IV VS. a7S III, a7 III

  • What kind of realistic battery life can you expect out of the Sony a7 IV? How does it stack up to other popular Sony Alpha cameras like the a7S III, and the a7 III? And furthermore, are there any unique hacks or tricks that may extend battery life a bit longer when using these cameras?
    In this video, I'll go through what results I found testing the battery life on the a7 IV, a7S III and a7 III and the range of results I witnessed doing various tests recording 4K 24p footage. I'll also discuss the many conditions and factors I used to make testing this as consistent as possible across each of these cameras. And, I'll discuss the one mode in particular that may help to get a little extra battery life out of certain Sony cameras.
    For those thinking about cameras not covered here like the FX3, a1, a7R IV and a7R III, a9 and a9 II - all of which use the same Sony NP-FZ100 battery - this should still provide good insight into what battery life you can expect using those models as well.
    If you like experimental testing videos like this, let me know in the comments below and I will make more. Also, feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

    Very interesting comparison. I have noticed the same as you in the A74 that the battery is exhausted in less time. Maybe you have to test the same battery in the 3 models. What stabilization you use in A74?

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, same exact battery in all of the models would be another interesting test. I turned stabilization off on all of the cameras, but they were just sitting statically on a table while testing anyway.

    Thanks for the video! I recently bought the a7 IV. On day 1, I was setting up the camera. Just navigating the menus and customizing buttons. It drained the battery very fast. That surprised me. And it got super hot, but never gave me a warning or turned off. However it was very warm to touch. I had the screen out and the memory card door open to dissipate the heat. I was not sure if I needed a firmware update or something. But coming from the a7S III, I noticed the battery life and the heat right away.
    Also, I'm curious How much more battery Active stabilization takes than Standard stabilization, or off?
    Thanks again!

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No problem! Yeah the a7 IV definitely seems to generate more heat than the a7S III; it's certainly more hot to the touch. Only anecdotal, but I haven't seen a noticeable difference running the camera between the different stabilization modes.

      @@andrewsaraceni I think it has to do with the 33 megapixels and the metarials that body is made of. I think it's more plastic than the a7S III. I think that's one of the ways they were able to price it as such.

      @@JamesJones10 I'm almost leaving Canon going for the a7siii, I'm a photographer who likes high iso, normally using 6400 on my 5d mk iii, and not going the expected way to Canon R5 because I don't crop, so 45mpx are a waste of storage for me. And the 12mpx from the 7siii are absolutely enough even that this camera is almost only used by videographers. The question is: anybody have an ideia of how many photos can I take with one charged battery? Thanks and congratulations for the video Andrew, hugs from Brazil!!!

      @JamesJones10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@leokerk I dont know for sure. I have taken lots of photos with the a7siii. I have never drained the battery thought doing so. I would guess around 500 photos. If battery life and the amount of you can take on on battery is what you are loooking for I would suggest the a7iii. It has the best battery life of all the a7 bodys.

      @leokerk ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JamesJones10 thank you so much! At BH they say the 7siii would take around 600 shots, while the 7iv 520 and say nothing about the 7iii, I was waiting for years for the Siii, amazed with the abilities of the Sii, I think this lady will make me happy! No mirror-less will be compared to a dslr, my Mk iii goes easy to 2k photos with one charge, definitely will need a battery grip!

    Just bought the a7iv. Charging it for the first time felt like it took so long, after checking on google it says the charge time is 310 minutes which seems like a long time. I was charging it with the cables provided in the box. Does anyone know if buying a seperate charge dock for the batteries will charge the battery faster or does it really take that long to charge batteries on the a7iv?
    Also I will be looking at buying a second battery, Is it true that the not original sony batteries make the a7iv overheat more/faster? hearing all the issues with the a7iv overheating makes me not want to buy other brand batteries since i've heard they overheat the camera faster.

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  ปีที่แล้ว

      Charging through the camera will always take longer. It doesn't come with the a7 IV, but it's definitely worth picking up Sony's BC-QZ1 charger for their NP-FZ100 batteries. It can charge one of the batteries in about 2.5 hours. For Sony cameras, I tend to buy Sony brand batteries only and stay away from third-party - the latter are generally more trouble than it's worth.

      @EmanuelFilms ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewsaraceni thanks for the reply. That’s what I was thinking charging the battery through the camera would take longer. Do you know if there is a difference between charging the battery with the Sony charging dock vs charging with a different brand dock for example newell?

    Hello! Got my Sony a7iv recently, when I turn the camera off with a fully charged battery and put it away for a few hours, the battery charge percentage drops drastically on restart. Went from 100% to 59% in 12 hours without attached lens. Is that normal?

    • @andrewsaraceni
      @andrewsaraceni  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      For an older Sony battery, that's not entirely unexpected. As long as it doesn't continue dropping that drastically, it should be fine. If it does, the battery might have an issue.
