The ONLY Memory Card Reader You Need! Freewell Pro Card Reader Review
If you're a photographer or videographer, there's a good chance that you have a lot of memory cards. But finding a good storage solution that can handle all types of cards - whether SD, SDHC or SDXC, microSD/TF, CFexpress Type A or Type B - and a reader for those same card types might be more difficult to achieve than you might think. But is there an ideal product on the market that can easily tackle both memory card storage and reading capabilities?
In this review, I'll cover the Freewell Pro Card Reader, discussing all of the unit's specifications and features. This includes the many different card types it's equipped to handle, the details around its reported read speeds, and all of its included accessories. I'll also discuss why this unit makes sense for most folks' looking for a 2-in-1 card storage and reading solution, and what I've used it for personally.
However, more than just covering its published specs, I'll also evaluate the card reader's practical real-world read speeds, comparing the read/copy performance using SD card files from my Sony a7S III from both the Pro Card Reader, and my Apple MacBook Pro M2 Max. Last, I'll cover the card reader's price and different options - including Freewell's more affordable Duo Card Reader version - and offer my final thoughts on the unit.
Overall, the Freewell Pro Card Reader is a great bang for your buck that has become a mainstay in my kit for many reasons. When compared to separate card readers and storage solutions, and what their combined price point would be in purchasing them separately, the value of the Pro Card Reader truly speaks for itself. When it comes to 50mm lenses, there is no shortage of options to choose from in the Sony Alpha ecosystem. But many of these - such as the Sony 50mm f/1.2 GM, the Zeiss Sonnar 55mm f1/.8, etc. - come with premium features at an equally premium price point. But is there an option out there that doesn't break the bank, but provides great image quality and features, all at a compelling price point?...

Hello, is it possible to replace the battery after start to degrade?
If I register camera settings to dial location "1" for say a legacy adapted manual focus lens, can I always go back to my default/typical autofocus settings at dial location "M" or do I need to use another dial slot, say "2" to keep these settings available? TY
i updated my fcp11, custom lut is missing😢on v 15.1.1 help please 🙏
I still see it mine, also updated to FCPX 11 - make sure you're searching across Installed Effects (All Video & Audio).
Does that battery charge while connected to the monitor or do I need to buy a charger for that battery?
You'll need a separate charger for the battery.
🙌🏼🙌🏼 thank you
No problem!
Great, thank you. So helpfull
No problem!
What should I get for a camera that is portable? Do you recommend this or something else and relatively cheap because it will be my first one
Can u answer?
The Action 2 is a great choice - still my go-to for this purpose.
@andrewsaraceni okay thank you is it kind of cheap? 100-200$
@@Juicey_Wrld No problem, yes the Action 2 with the Power module is on sale now for $150: amzn.to/46wWwuI
This video was super helpful 🎉
Thanks, glad to hear it helped!
What LUT are you using for this SLog3 footage (your main talking head shot)? Thanks!
I used S-Cinetone for this talking head, but usually Phantom LUTs, among a few others.
@@andrewsaraceni Thanks!
Thanks for the review. How has the Smallrig held up 9 months on? Considering getting a set for an upcoming trip.
No problem! Still holding up well, no less noticeable charge compared to any of my standard Sony NP-FZ100 batteries and their lifespan.
I just picked one up for $1300 Waiting for it to be delivered as we speak!
Congrats! I think you'll enjoy it - it's a great lens.
This helped, much love from Hindu (india)
No problem, glad to hear it helped you!
blessings 🙏🏽
Thanks, likewise!
One interesting note is I've had a 3 light set of P60cs that I have been using for a year and that fixes at least one issue 1. The softbox while not huge is designed to fit snug to the light, the elastic straps fit over the jut outs on the rear corners and then reflective flaps cover the sides of the light. That gives the softbox a lot of it's form though admittedly it is a little fiddley to get in place. Also, if using the 35 degree grid there is one corner that you have to unvelcro and revelcro to make sure one of the corners is properly aligned. So I think if you tried that you'd get better results out of it. 2. The 3 light kit's case has space all three lights, the grids on the top flap and extra space to accomodate the three softboxes collapsed into their bags in addition to the other accessories. I think it's stupid they didn't make the single light case big enough for that, but I just felt I would mention it. 3. The Mount provided with the light while seeming plastic and therefore cheap is pretty sturdy and reliable. I've had these hanging on light grids overhead, on wall mounts and on stands pointing down at 45+ degree angles and as long as things are tightened down I haven't had them move on me once. (Though admittedly you should safety chain anything hanging overhead.) Anyways, just 2 cents on that.
Good points! I'm glad to hear the 3 light set accounted for the extra accessories. I'll also say the mount has been holding up better than I expected, at least in some cases.
I have the same smallrig batteries, but the Indicator Pro in the camera shoots continuous video for 20 minutes when it is at 1%, do you have the same problem?
Not exactly, but the battery status is a lot more limited in some of Sony's bodies with 3rd party batteries - i.e. just a few bars vs. the exact percentage of battery life. Probably a good idea to have a spare handy or consider swapping out once it gets near the bottom.
@@andrewsaraceni So will it cause any problems to the device?
@@hculas No, I've never had any issues with it - just need to be ready to change out batteries possibly sooner.
Hello, does it suitable for motorcycle dashcam for around 1 hour continues uses?
Yes, you can definitely get an 1+ hour continuous usage out of it, especially with the Power Module attached.
good review, thanks!
No problem, Gabriel!
Great review, but you have missed an important point - how to wear it? What is a comfortable way to wear it?...
I show this in the video at a few points, e.g. at 0:33, 2:53, etc.
Weird, Im on FCP 10.7.1 and I dont have any check box for Smart Conform!? :(
Try updating to a more recent version, although I think you should still have it at that version. It shows up when you Duplicate Project, etc.
Very helpful video. I like to leave zebras on, set to 100%, and use exposure compensation to dial them away and protect my highlights. My photo software (DxO PhotoLab) is very good at pulling up shadows, if they're not completely crushed. And it's VERY good at noise reduction, so even if I get some noise from pulling up the shadows, I can deal with it.
Thanks Carey! Agreed - zebras are great for that, and I'm equally impressed by what can be done on the photo side re: pushing/pulling colors, denoising, etc. at this point (I use Lightroom Classic). Shooting RAW is really the key there.
Great video! Quick question. I'm trying to get into video and so far I'm not planning to color grade. I'm shooting on S-Cine tone but I'm having a hard time figuring out what codec to use on my a7iv. I mainly do wedding photography but I would like to star doing video highlights.
Thanks! My usual go to is XAVC S in 10-bit 4:2:2, manageable files sizes and enough flexibility to adjust colors in post if you need to. But you could also consider XAVC HS if you have an M1, M2, etc. Mac to handle it (and save file size).
Please where do you get your sound from? I love this video by the way. ❤❤❤
Music is from the TH-cam Audio Library.
@ thanks for the reply.
Do the cfexpress type a cards transfer files to your computer more quickly? If so, how much more quickly?
They're quicker, possibly around/up to 2x speed in transferring, but it'll still depend on the reader and speed of the connection.
@@andrewsaraceni I'm getting an A7RV, and I ordered a couple of 80GB type A cards. They were $109 each on Amazon. Also got a USB-C 3.2 reader. I have a MacBook Air M3 with Thunderbolt ports. An 80GB card, by my calculation should hold 500-600 uncompressed raw shots. I've never taken 500 photos in one day in my life. I don't shoot much video, but it sounds like a 256GB v60 would suffice for my needs. And I've got v30 cards, in an emergency. BTW, thanks for the good info. The A7RV is going to be a BIG step up from my A7III and A6600. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
@@careylymanjones No problem! Yeah with that setup, you'll be in good shape for most any photo/video shooting situation.
Still rocking mine in 2024 and beyond it is the perfect camera for certain situations love it still
Same! Glad to hear it's still working well for you.
Awesome it works :)
It's a good hack!
Focus on my a 7 iv is taking practice for me. This will help me as a beginner. I have a hard time telling what’s in focus and what’s not
Practice makes perfect - I would use focus peaking and peaking display to help practice as well.
I will try this!! Thank you
friend at 7 51 i saw 8k choise my sony a7iv has not that choise
That's on my a7R V - but yes, the Sony a7 IV doesn't have 8K as an option.
Does it work on gimbal mini
Good question - yes the RS3 Mini can handle the 24-70mm GM on basically any of the Sony Alpha bodies.
I’m a full time corporate video/photographer. I purchased the 24-70 GM in 2018. It’s my workhorse and is worn but still in very good shape. I use this lens on 75-80 percent of my jobs. It’s in good shape and I really don’t need to replace it. It would strictly be just a newer lighter lens. I was thinking about getting a 50mm F/1.4 just for those occasions when you want the extra stops of light and for that really shallow depth of field. I’m not convinced I need either but if I have to choose, I think I’d rather have the “Porsche” (50mm F1.4) in my garage…..my “pick up truck” (GM 1) has 100,000 miles but it’s still going strong.
The 24-70 GM with a good 50mm prime for shallower depth of field/low light is a great pairing. I have that now similarly with the 50mm f1.2 GM.
friend, when shot with s log at the monitor you see with colors? or b&w like sony screen seems?
You can either apply a LUT on the monitor, or use Gamma Display Assist (or add a LUT) on the camera itself, depending on the model. I talk more about this here: th-cam.com/video/8QqPyp1gVvo/w-d-xo.html
@andrewsaraceni thanks
Amazing
Thanks!
Hang on, you’re leaving it on sRBG….? That needs a hell of lot more explaining.
Not really something to worry about changing unless you're in very specific situations. e.g. Most of my photos are edited in Lightroom Classic and thus end up in ProPhoto RGB anyway.
I have HUGE respect for your video! Thank you for doing what all reviews should do: 1. Define the tests, explain the details of all variables 2. Conduct experiments that are reproducible 3. SHOW side by side analysis 4. Provide detailed commentary free from strong personal biases 👍
Thanks Brock, I really appreciate that! The devil's in the details, as they say.
Very very very informative ❤❤
Thanks!
I concur with your review. The Manfrotto has a little free play at the bottom when you expect it to be locked in vertical position, and doesn’t really stand perfectly vertical. The iFootage does not. It stays exactly where you put it when the ball head at the foot is tightened. I initially bought the Manfrotto but saw immediately that it would not serve my purposes. I like the Manfrotto fluid head though.
Thanks Pierre! I noticed the same, and I also agree the MHXPro-2W head is a great choice - I have a few now, and still use it with my iFootage today.
Nice setup. Every time I look for sports film advice it always defaults to team sports in a completely different environment than what we are in when filming my daughter in her taekwondo competition fights.
Thanks! Yeah there's some unique aspects to filming martial arts that aren't easily translatable to/from other sports (and not talked about much).
There are two virgins???? 😀
😂
So in doing an initial Time Machine backup on a brand new drive, I just go straight to the TM steps? No need to do the format via DU? Thanks!
Yep, I would start with that, and only go to DU if it has any trouble locating or formatting the drive (but it generally shouldn't).
2:50 is the usb A adapter housed inside or is it something i'm going to need another holder for the adapter?
It's in the box, but separate from the main unit, so you'll need to store it separately.
How would you rate the durability of the integrated USB-C cable? I'm always skeptical of integrated cables that can't be serviced/replaced easily.
It seems pretty solid and is nicely secured in the unit. Basically what I'd expect of a similar cable I'd use to connect external SSDs, etc. I haven't had any issues with it so far.
I bought the PGYTECH, and that's where being an early adopter isn't always great. The Freewell has CFexpress Type A & B and the PGYTECH you can have one or the other, plus they give you a card reader for the microsSD card not a slot. The one other thing that's Freewell does better is, the blinking light, no lights on the PGYTECH.
Interesting, that's good to know. I haven't tried the PGYTECH version, but Freewell definitely refined their design a fair amount.
I just got this lens in for my zve10 but it's very cropped in vs my 11mm f1.8. Not as ultra wide as the 11mm. Unfortunately, I have to return...
On the ZV-E10, this lens works out to be a 30mm field of view since it's an APS-C sensor, so definitely not wide enough for vlogging in that case (but would be fine on a full frame camera).
@andrewsaraceni I so wanted to love it for vlogging! My 11mm 1.8 does just fine🙂
Hello, sir. Can we use direct type c wireless mic while using the case?
Good question - yes, it works with USB-C compatible microphones, including wireless units.
@andrewsaraceni thank you, sir!
hello, can it be kept in pocket?
Yes, it has a clip on the back to secure it too.
Where's the extended section, you did not show us, I cannot find it.
Not sure what section you're referring to, I talk about how to find the LUTs in Finder at 7:18.
