its way easier to use a punch on a hard surface to open the eye. never had a hook break doing it with punch. great video, thanks for all the excellent content you put out.
Awesome thanks so much ordered a 7' 3" moderate action rod about a week ago and I was just getting a little reassurance that I got the right power for what I want to use it for
Enjoyed your video, was exploring making some with an arkie jig. After watching, I'm warming up to the thought of using this jig. Will look into getting a mold to make mine... You definitely answered some questions I had. Good stuff brother...
My favorite mod is to cup the blade edges forward with the straight edge of a pair of needlenose plyers, so it catches water better and vibes harder (backwards catches less water, so it vibes softer, of course).
these tackle making and modification videos are great brother. btw... it's a 'lineman's tool;', like dude said down below lol...and they're super fun to fix the wire cutting part
if youll put your other hand right behind whatever it is your trying to get a close up on it will focus 100 times better!!! I'm diggin the lure videos keep up the good work!
Excellent video. I'd recommend that you get some UV cure resin (Loon makes it in several thicknesses, as do a couple other manufacturers) from a fly shop and at least put a bit on top of the eyes. If you use the thinnest type, you might coat the whole head for additional protection. It would probably add less than a minute to your process and would secure and possibly even accentuate the eyes. Just a thought...
If you pour your own jigs you can use a hook that is short enough that the line tie loop is buried in the lead and add your own line tie exposed at any angle you want. Nothing to break or bend!
Use a heat gun to heat up your jigs, about 6-8 seconds per side on a jig that size does well. If you are not going to use a fluid bed have the powder paint in something big enough to dip the jig in. I use forceps to hold onto the eye of the jig to get less paint in it.
Keep up the awesome content bud. Those Googans are getting old and a little to much high school drama. Subscribed and love the beer sponsored vids. Cheers man!
Thank you so much for this video! I have been struggling to get my chatterbaits right, I make them myself and have been struggling for months to get them right, this video helped a lot!
Milliken Fishing is there any way you could message me or email me more in depth info on bending the hook, I have the same pliers you used in the video and I'm not having much luck bending the eye without it breaking, I know they are meant to bend like that so it's expected but just wanted maybe some tips, just seeing if you have found the "best" way to do it. Thanks again
linemans pliers are the only tool to use for crimping terminal ends. those are not lineman pliers, they have a cutting edge on end, with two or three crimping style dies after the pivoting joint. he isn't using a lineman's pliers
Have you tried making it with a wobble head jig? If so, did the extra joint in the bait stop it from tracking correctly? I'm curious because I think the moving link between the head and hook might take leverage away from the fish and increase hook up/catch ratio. Thoughts before I give it a shot?
Never tried that Roy! Go give it a shot and see how it goes. I feel the swing head works because it's a natural presentation and action, so adding more hardware may take away from the realism...but you can never know until you try.
You can take a blunt point punch to spread open up the eye of the hook by hitting it on a vise or anvil. No twisting so less breakage. To close back just clamp in the vise. CREDIT goes to The Skimpy Guy channel. Thanks for sharing
about .18 cents on the dollar or approximately 1/6th the cost of buying one... with the added bonus of being able to trailer your colors and trailers... As far as brand name goes frankly i have caught strippers on a Texas rigged boot string so it doesn't matter who make it or how expensive it is, if the person throwing it doesn't know what they are doing they wont catch fish anyway...
I ordered some of those 6th sense jigs, just wondering how you manage the already installed weed guard? Do you pull them out or use a heat tube over it?
Hey brother...I'm planning my vacation for spawning time I think. Thinking about Stockton lake....didn't know what you had going on around that time, but...
Pretty late to the party here, but the wide pliers you are using are referred to as linemens pliers incase you need to ask a hardware store about them.
Is it me or is the unpainted poison tail jig heads not showing up on their website. It links to the weedless but can't find the ones without the guard. I made a bunch of these last year with parts from Barlows, but I did mine with the split rings and wanted to try making them without.
Love the video and the knowledge but when you push the bait toward the camera it goes out of focus and I can't see a good pic. I don't have the best eyes so maybe it's just me. You might consider leaving it close to the camera long enough to let it focus. Thanks again!
Sick video I gotta try this. When you say add a split ring to change the action, do you put the split ring on the line tie? so then you'll be tying the line directly to the split ring?
I sell a pretty limited quantity but I've been brainstorming some different ideas of baits/products I could sell on a web page to help off-set some of my filming costs...what would your thoughts be on that?
go for it i would for sure buy your products and some of your gear. once its up ill help you get your website out there. ill tell all of my friends when u make it.
Milliken Fishing1 second agoI sell a pretty limited quantity but I've been brainstorming some different ideas of baits/products I could sell on a web page to help off-set some of my filming costs...what would your thoughts be on that?
Milliken Fishing I can see alot of people buying your baits. specially chatterbaits because they are so versatile. you could also make swim jigs and etc. I think it would be a big success
Z&N Outdoors if you make chatterbaits with the blade connected in the hook eye, and advertise them for sale publicly, z-man will come after you very aggressively with threats of lawsuits. They absolutely do not play when it comes to competition and their grip on that patent.
will you sell me some of your chatterbaits? I can't get any confidence in throwing them. I have been using is Zman series because they people were saying that's what they thrown .
Unless you just enjoy making your own lures how much money are you really saving ?? Tacklewarwhouse has zman for 4.99. Also if you figure in wasted material with broken hooks. May be more expensive
Have another tip for you, don't try to twist the eye of the hook open and chance breaking them. Open the eye up using a nail set and hammer. Much easier and doesn't torque on the shaft of the hook at the eye like twisting it to open it does. I also open the eye before painting so I don't mess up the finish.
Milliken Fishing using an o-ring would eliminate the need to bend the hook eye and make the chatter a lot stronger over all also using an o-ring with give the lure a better and more acratic action
its way easier to use a punch on a hard surface to open the eye. never had a hook break doing it with punch. great video, thanks for all the excellent content you put out.
Hey Ben, thanks for your fishing knowledge, really appreciate your time
Genius opening up the eye on the blade!Biggest problem I've had has been the blade not getting enough movement!
Glad youre on the up and up Milliken. Keep up the hard work.
Awesome thanks so much ordered a 7' 3" moderate action rod about a week ago and I was just getting a little reassurance that I got the right power for what I want to use it for
So cool that you came through for us and made the video...Thanks!!! Definitely do some more vids if you can.
Enjoyed your video, was exploring making some with an arkie jig. After watching, I'm warming up to the thought of using this jig. Will look into getting a mold to make mine... You definitely answered some questions I had. Good stuff brother...
Go Bruins! Thanks for sharing!
Love the Huskers and your videos, you just gained a subscriber
The pliers look like linesman pliers that electricians use , I used them for over 30 years as an electrician. Now I can put them to A Good Use. Lol.
My favorite mod is to cup the blade edges forward with the straight edge of a pair of needlenose plyers, so it catches water better and vibes harder (backwards catches less water, so it vibes softer, of course).

Thanks a ton Kevin!
...no, thank you for the killer videos bro...
If you don't want the hook eye to break try heating it up with the torch to almost red hot it won't have as much tension and won't break as easily
if youll put your other hand right behind whatever it is your trying to get a close up on it will focus 100 times better!!! I'm diggin the lure videos keep up the good work!

I have a swimjig mold that takes a 30 degree hook. Will that work too?

That means a lot Nick. Really appreciate you watching!
@@MillikenFishing great video you ever try a metal punch to open the hook eye??
great video man!
my only improvement would be having high resolution photos of what your progress was. definitely want to try this though!
hey dude.. You Da MAN. live in Kearney and watch all your vids. Take me fishing lol
Those "really really wide grip pliers" are called linesmans. You can fined them in the electrical isle. 👍🏼
I have a ? for ya what’s the name of the places that you got the molding for weights n worms.
What is the hook model u like to use.
what do you think about the new jackhammers?
What color powder paint for bream and bluegill colored chatterbaits?
awsome video man! great tip man
I just bought 2 z man chatter baits
Any ideas to correct the flaws before use. Nice video
what flaws? I catch plenty on zman chatters
Thank you so much for this video! I have been struggling to get my chatterbaits right, I make them myself and have been struggling for months to get them right, this video helped a lot!
Thanks Christian! Give that a try

This has been #justthatip. Great video , Perfect for those raining days project. Thank you.
They're called "lineman's pliers".
"Electrician's hammer"
I zoomed down to say this.... but you beat me by a year!!
Give him a break he has a black and decker drill aha
linemans pliers are the only tool to use for crimping terminal ends. those are not lineman pliers, they have a cutting edge on end, with two or three crimping style dies after the pivoting joint. he isn't using a lineman's pliers
You can also use fingernail polish for lead heads. Great video
good luck this year...glad to see FROST ...that's a first...ha
what powder coat do you use, can you point me in the direction to purchase some different colors?
Dude. Awesome channel.
Very nice what are you using, also the link to jig making isn't working?
Great video, should catch many slaunches
You've got some great content. Really surprised that I haven't found your channel until now. Sub'ed.
Just for clarification there shakee blades right? And what size blades do you use?
Yessir shakee blades in the regular size...although I've heard the big blades may work also ;)
Appreciate the quick response👍🏼 great videos
My snap ring broke on a Jackhammer, do you know how I can replace it easily?
Have you tried making it with a wobble head jig? If so, did the extra joint in the bait stop it from tracking correctly? I'm curious because I think the moving link between the head and hook might take leverage away from the fish and increase hook up/catch ratio. Thoughts before I give it a shot?

Piccaso makes a great chatterbait that is very durable, u should check it out

Hey brother when u can could u show a lil more on doing the skirts for the chatter and jigs please... i appreciate u doing the show and tell for us
where do u buy your poison heads at?
What rod (power and action) would you use to throw a 3xd through a 5xd. Or any other deep diving crankbait that weighs between 7/16 of an oz to 1oz
Hey Dylan with those 10-15 ft divers I really like a 7'6" MH Moderate action graphite rod.
Go big Redddddd!
Try using 30 lb split rings. I found them to create more room for movement while still swimming true.
awesome vid & tips...btw go huskers!
Awesome bro thank you
I’m s jiggin fool, making my own will be fun.
how do you think these would fair on the mississippi?, moderate currents and very murky water.
Austin Whitecotton white and chatrtuse what ever it is tight lines
What would you guess your cost to make a chatter bait would be vs. buying a Z man or some other brand?
Depends on how many I break haha if I got it on the first time....$2-3
Milliken Fishing what size of hooks are your favorite and also what size are you using to do your lures?
about .18 cents on the dollar or approximately 1/6th the cost of buying one... with the added bonus of being able to trailer your colors and trailers...
As far as brand name goes frankly i have caught strippers on a Texas rigged boot string so it doesn't matter who make it or how expensive it is, if the person throwing it doesn't know what they are doing they wont catch fish anyway...

Zman jackhammer are top notch
I want order some can I do that? If so I want a black and green pumpkin
Have you tried heating the eye and then bending it to prevent it from breaking
Yes. It broke haha
2 split rings seem to work well, and you don't risk breaking the line tie
Where do you buy your unpainted poison tails
Is it me or is the unpainted poison tail jig heads not showing up on their website. It links to the weedless but can't find the ones without the guard.
I made a bunch of these last year with parts from Barlows, but I did mine with the split rings and wanted to try making them without.
Yes I use the ones that are weedless, then pull the weedguard out with pliers. Thanks for watching!
Cornhusker?
Love the video and the knowledge but when you push the bait toward the camera it goes out of focus and I can't see a good pic. I don't have the best eyes so maybe it's just me. You might consider leaving it close to the camera long enough to let it focus. Thanks again!
Why don't you add the blade while heating the head with heat so it won't break?
Linesman pliers is the name of that.
I didn't see the comment below me but that's linesman pliers of course you know that already
Would you make them and we buy them
Sick video I gotta try this. When you say add a split ring to change the action, do you put the split ring on the line tie? so then you'll be tying the line directly to the split ring?
No I meant between the blade and the head. Thanks for watching!
Your doing pretty good blowing up man !!! I remember when u quit your job
Enjoyed video and info you provided......but your close-up camera shots were blurry and too short to fully comprehend your message.
Would you be interested in selling than? I really enjoy your videos and wanna try some of the gear you use.
them i meant to put instead of then.
I sell a pretty limited quantity but I've been brainstorming some different ideas of baits/products I could sell on a web page to help off-set some of my filming costs...what would your thoughts be on that?

Cool vid
Try opening the eye up before you heat treat the metal. With such a small piece of metal your tempering the metal making it stiffer yet more brittle.
I like buying strike king jigs and put a blade on it
You know if you heat up the hook up before turning it, it won't break as easily at least.
Ever thought about selling your homemade jigs
Z&N Outdoors if you make chatterbaits with the blade connected in the hook eye, and advertise them for sale publicly, z-man will come after you very aggressively with threats of lawsuits. They absolutely do not play when it comes to competition and their grip on that patent.
So my hook eyes break every time. Is it because they are 1/4 oz? Or is because my powder coat is too thick?
Those pliers are called linemans pliers
Those are called bull nosed pliers. Farmers best friend.
will you sell me some of your chatterbaits? I can't get any confidence in throwing them. I have been using is Zman series because they people were saying that's what they thrown .
I don't know I just love zman versions
Put your hand behind it to focus. :)
I've tried...my camera just blows
Never had a z man chatter bait break on me and I use the crap out of the same ones
Good to hear! You're very lucky. Thank you for watching!
You need to put your hand behind anything you put close to your camera.it will focus better
Cool make more
They're called lineman's pliers
Nice FOCUS !!! LoL
Unless you just enjoy making your own lures how much money are you really saving ?? Tacklewarwhouse has zman for 4.99. Also if you figure in wasted material with broken hooks. May be more expensive
Dustin Lee he makes his own because he feels that the ones on the market use inferior components not to save money
I lie these diy vids more please id like to start making baits.
Have another tip for you, don't try to twist the eye of the hook open and chance breaking them. Open the eye up using a nail set and hammer. GBR!!
linesman pliers
I wish you would have showed the action of yours versus others so we could see what you were talking about.
OMG you were so young here
lineman pliers brother
The best chatterbait is a strike king pure Poisin
Use a gd o-ring
Please explain
Milliken Fishing using an o-ring would eliminate the need to bend the hook eye and make the chatter a lot stronger over all also using an o-ring with give the lure a better and more acratic action
Did you watch the video?
Lyman plyers
