I appreciate seeing a heavy orientated video without a pocket medic 24/7 all the SMD videos off siN's channel is just fake news with a pocket This is the true meat of the heavy main chain, providing cover for the team and helping advantage push when the opportunities are right
It truly is a shame that SMD constantly relies on pockets to generate high frag-streaks, especially as HWG, because it's clear that they're very skilled at the game; they just don't push themself much to not rely on pockets. If I even watch them, I have to watch them on mute to avoid second-hand embarrassment from all the E-key spam.
@@HyperStormH right! when I play heavy I rarely call for a pocket unless we're being steamrolled, then I ask a friend or another willing player if they want to swap to medic with ubercharge to help push the team to victory, I still ask the medic to prioritize healing and pick who would be the best to uber into the fight, it solely doesnt have to be the heavy to make it count The difference between a good heavy and a great heavy is his ability to manage their 300 healthpool while fighting, choose their fights accordingly and always position themselves at an advantage near healthpacks or behind cover (BIG REMINDER, HEAVY SHOOTS FROM HIS EYES, USE THIS INFORMATION TO YOUR ADVANTAGE!!!!!!!)
It also creates a bad habit of casual player medics ALWAYS ubering a heavy, when it's just not the best choice in some situations. Against heavy engine nests Demoman is hands down the best Uber target (or if you can't get close enough), because he can simply destroy them pretty easily if you give him precious invulnerability or critical hits. Demoman with Krietz is one of the most scary things the player can deal with. Heavy most of the time doesn't work, because rockets from sentries simply push him away, and if there is at least one pyro as a support, he will be pushed even further. And once it happens, heavy is too slow to return quicky enough to keep doing damage before Uber ends. Heck, in really close range I personally prefer to Uber Pyro over Heavy in some specific situations. Of course in some cases (defending point) ubering Heavy is perfectly fine, but not always.@@denzy_lolol
Its also weird because iirc his own videos never show a pocket. Im 90% sure the medic is tf2easy and everytime smd kills someone the enemy loses their bank account to win big
That enemy heavy in the first game with the brass beast 'Guffeh' was also quite good. Had good positioning, knew when to retreat. Nice little heavy 1v1 spread throughout a good game.
brass beast is so underrated and tbh I dont fully understand why. Yes its obviously going to be generally bad for attacking because of how slow you are, but when you are using as intended and defending on payload or holding down a point it can be stupidly good if you have good positioning and a semi-competent team as it lets even a full health non-overhealed heavy challenge a fully overhealed one thanks to the damage resistance and extra dps it offers
I agree, it's good to see people talking about the value of healthpacks they are like burst overheal packages if they are medium ones except you cross no extra overhealth thresholds, they get even more ridiculous with the dalokohs bar too which makes it my favorite defensive defensive secondary when my main priority is being a defensive stalwart
Heavy taught me alot in Team Fortress. It really is more like CS:GO in a way where the spots on the map and your team matter alot more and everything needs to be kept in mind and used well for the solo Heavy main that is very cautious and conservative in play style to actually get and keep a killstreak going.
Voice over is far better than captions; it's difficult to follow the captions while still watching the gameplay without pausing frequently, and sometimes they just move too quickly to read anyway.
This is a quality gameplay. Most heavy players still think they need a medic to have a good K/D ratio and because of that, people consider heavy class easy to play with no skill required. I hope this video makes them change their mind
Very true and It's kind of funny in an ironic sense that because of this heavies are actually easy to kill in puns because they just don't care about their awareness at all, even big joey heavily relies on the tomislav and he doesn't care about team fights or positions at all.
This video is incredible. I'm an aspiring comp heavy and as such I've been trying to up my casual game before I even think about signing up for a team. I've been specifically trying to play the game with the fewest deaths, but I was told by a wise sage heavy that heavy's too fat and takes up too much healing. So, I've been trying to play the game solo and without a pocket medic. I've already seen substantial improvements! But now you've dropped some of the most educational gameplay I've seen for heavy since... ever. Thank you so much. I think in terms of actual video quality, you did outstanding. A couple issues I have are having annotations split up, so you have to wait to see the second half of a sentence. There's a couple spots in the earlier parts of the vid where you're explaining a lot of basics. I think you could do just fine with decreasing the font size a bit in order to make it all fit, and just making the time before the text fades longer. I also think you skipped a couple of good talking points when skipping through the vod, but it could be something you've already explained before. Overall, great video quality wise. Its a godsend for geeks like me who like to dig into the details and min-max their gameplay. That being said, would you be interested in doing this more? Maybe reviewing other demos by other heavies, or playing other game modes like cp or koth? Would absolutely love it if I could get on that list.
I love this video too. I want to improve at demoman in hl but tbh, I think watching him play heavy helps me more. His class is even more handicapped than mine so if I see how he overcomes it, I can have an easier time doing it as demo.
that's why I think stock is better than the tomislav, you're exchanging a not insignificant amount of damage for a faster rev up time that doesn't matter that much if you're positioning yourself well and an accuracy bonus that actually slightly cripples you at your preferred range and makes you slightly better at ranges where you shouldn't really be taking fights at all
I was once in a casual match with a heavy player who was topscoring solo. Mind you there was decent players in the server. He was using australium tomislav with banana and always managed to get like 4 kills per life. I still remember that because he's got my respect. He was also only wearing a pair of sunglasses as cosmetic, based af
This is very needed and I personally appreciate it! I’m a medic main currently learning how to play heavy because I see so few in casual lobbies, and those that I do find are often super reliable on being pocketed (and die quickly and often). You’re doing good work!
this video was exactly the type of Getting Better content that i was looking for. simply explaining what youre doing and why with a voiceover on some actually solo gameplay. genuinely this made me better at playing heavy in the past month.
i used to be a sniper/spy main but once i actually tried playing heavy with a tryhard mindset i fell in love with the class, heavy is insanely rewarding if you have good map knowledge/position/game sense. Mostly i prefer playing maps like 5gorge and coldfront where i can flank and jump enemies around corners the heavys mechanics are extremely simple but it allows you to full focus on tracking to max out your damage output, and positioning/game sense to be in the most optimal areas to catch people at point blank range. if you get good at these main functions you will become a casual server terminator, always appearing in spots where the enemy has no time to react and having aimbot like tracking ability. always avoid lines of sight longer than 10 meters, you have no reason to be seen beyond your miniguns effective range, always hug walls and whatever you can to hide yourself and break line of sight to enemy until you are close enough to melt them i really prefer the tomislav/fists of steel/sandvich loadout, sometimes swapping sandvich for banana.
As a fellow heavy enjoyer, this was a delight to watch. Its so rare to see a heavy gameplay without a pocket med and even rarer to see ones like this where a particular heavy match gets analysed slowly. Love to see more of this even for other classes, reminds me of big joey's "mind of a heavy" series. Edit: Also I liked the voiceover segment the most as its hard to pay attention to the annotations in the middle of the gameplay.
Lovely gameplay. I've been looking to get into playing HWG more so this was very helpful and insightful. There's so much nuance and strategising that goes into playing HWG without a pocket Medic, and yet people still see him as a mindless W+M1 class, given how much pocketing is pushed into the meta. Hopefully, this video will help curb pocketing and lead to more skilful HWG gameplay within the meta.
The patience and calculations you make are so entrancingly similar to ones made playing medic. I’m a bit torn between the annotations being better than you voicing them, but neither hinders the video at all. Amazing to watch.
There is always a way to play heavy alone, with a medic its like a GOD but i always wanted a loadout for heavy to make him able to stand by its own without a medic like new weapons.
Played solo heavy for over 500 hours as I never had a dedicated pocket main. When I played with my heavy friends, they always had meds. I just played solo/flank/everything else heavy. there is a big difference between pocketed heavy where you just go the main path and kill people. Solo heavy is a whole another game.
This is really a good thing to clarify (no medic), because I think we all know this channel where a guy with 100,000,000 hours in the game plays with a medic, and naturally he has 1 in 50 d/k
very nice video, it's good for heavies to understand how to play without a pocket med because it's not always guaranteed you'll have a good med on your team, I'd also recommend using the second banana when playing without having a pocked med
I mostly like to think Heavy's role as similar to armoured vehicles in modern warfare, needing a lot of support from his own team to thrive and in turn, support his team back. However, while the Medic certainly is the best at supporting the Heavy, other classes can help a Heavy too, from Engineer's building assisting Heavy in defense and attacks, to just simply being around other teammates like Soldier, Demo, Scouts, Pyro and Sniper to assist them either by providing protection or direct fire support (a Heavy and a Demo together is an especially deadly combination that helps to even a matchup against Vaccinator medics).
ooohh I really like this video ngl, I actually love watching unedetied (frag montage) videos, I study over them so this video really hyped me up :D (I prefer voice over caption, but both are fine)
so many youtubers said that heavy is close to unplayable whitout a medic and i never rly belived it, that just didint sound true to me and now i finaly have proof for 1 side.
I've been sitting on a backlog of heavy footage that follows this same kind of vein albeit I think most of the time was spent in GruncleTalapia servers. Roaming, side-flank heavy is a blast, and weirdly addicting considering I've historically never played much heavy. GRU was a must for getting back to the fight, and I often ran shotgun for corners and fast swaps from the GRU although the chocobar combo to restore HP off of the GRU is also super good. It's super fun!
As a medic main, the only time I'm pocketing a heavy is when they're the front of a push, and need not just pocketing, but effective crossbow tanking just to survive being the front of the push.
I usually heal heavies when doing a big push or when the other team is making a small push due to the fact that everyone would be shooting at the heavy. This is so the heavy would absorb the damage for the other teammates not because i want to pocket the heavy. If there was no heavy it would be a demo man or a soldier.
I've only started watching this and I find that your callout about 3 dead power classes (at around 2:30) to already be noteworthy, and nice call on how the game UI can help you determine gamestate without having to speak to the team. (Though admittedly, in a pub, the entire team could have been composed of power classes... oh who am I kidding, the average pub is still going to have 3 spies and 3 snipers, so fair enough.) EDIT: Oh nice, a voiceover. Much better for someone who is playing at x2 speed. EDIT 2: Finished it, the voiceover section was pretty good, overall this video is very good, especially knowing the vast majority of players tend to play with heals, so seeing Heavy gameplay without heavy medic heals and/or competent medics is pretty eye opening. EDIT 3: I just noticed you don't have much Heavy stuff. Lol.
Thanks for this video. As far as heavy goes I prefer playing as a pseudo flank class with the Tomislav, Second Banana, and Fists of Steel, usually with no pocket medic. It can be really fun.
This is kinda unrelated but using a shotgun in KOTH (not referring to fat scout but a true pairing between primary and secondary) being able to deal damage while being mobile allows you to chase or escape more easily and also bait opponents who won't expect you to switch to minigun lol, not having a sandvich makes holding and pushing a bit harder but the extra mobility the shotgun grants makes Heavy much more fun for me imo, not really ideal in stuff like Payload though since if you want mobility you're better off going scout or solly obviously but yeah, definitely not strong but still very fun
Agreed! Shotgun on Heavy is underrated. It allows one to actually fight back against Soldiers and Demos while dodging their spam and corner firing, run to enemy Sniper's position while dodging and chipping him, deal with ambushing scouts and pyros quickly because 2 shots from shotgun is better than revving up and dying 2 seconds later. Also occasionally you can go ham with KGB and wipe out a small group
Scary, I'm curious, do you think you'll try to implement the 'sandvich nomming cancel' as I call it where you say another voice to stop the om nom nomming heavy does? I do it and I think it's pretty nice Also, are there ever times where you feel that you stay revved for 'too' long?
Yeah I probably should voice cancel the sandvich voice line, I always forget. I definitely stay revved too long sometimes, there were a couple of times during these games I should have pulled out FOS and backed up but instead I stayed revved and ended up dying
@@scarybroccoli Groovy brother. I can't wait for more videos of yours! Especially as a fellow heavy enjoyer. 'Tis a new version of 'How a Spy Thinks,' yet is all about heavy.
Another idea may be 'how to properly use a shotgun with Heavy'. I personally like this weapon choice, especially if there is enough healing support. One of the ways to use it is 'faking' being a fat scout, quickly hiding, revving the minigun, and mauling the players that run into you. Or you revv the minigun, drop someone to low hp, and quickly switch to shotgun to finish them off. Yeah, a sandwich is usually a superior choice, but this additional mobility and ability to pick different fights than normally heavy does IMO works fine.
@18:43 I still have a personal preference for the GRU, in this spot you would be outside of the line of enemy fire with the GRU, repositioning 30% faster is just as good, if not better than tanking 40% more damage
Heavy is a big wall and distraction that is weal to focus fire so cresting angles and timing to force 1vs1s or trap multiple players is key to being successful with Heavy, solo.
this, is a good heavy gameplay for whoever wants to know how to play heavy properly, compared to the "playwithsin" videos with the boyfriend medic on his ass. Very well done
hey man, i just wanna say, personally, i love these types of videos and a lot of people might not be into that. but i totally hope you make this into a series because i love these types of videos. maybe recording some audio when reviewing the clips instead of text boxes? more effort that might not be worth it if people arent into this type of video. keep up the good work
Hey, I am 3 months late so I am writing my feedback here. I have currently about 100 hours on the game and this is very helpful and detailed yet simple. I only do have 1 suggestion though, not really too bad. I just find the cutout annotations kind of annoying but it is completely fine if you keep it in. That's all. Thank you for making this video
I'd say Heavy is a defensive support class. This doesnt mean solo offensive heavy is impossible but just know there are more limits due to limited ability to pick fights and retreat and limited damaged in needing line of sight as shotguns can work well but usually bringing your own healing is better so its like your own team support.
NGL, good as this is, I think your play style would massively benefit from more Tomislav use. At the ranges you typically fight at, its DPS is far and away better than the stock Minigun’s.
i used to play whit the shotgun when im in blue, is very good for instead of wating for a oportunity u can move whit the shotgun make some shots to the sniper and make his rifle flick and repositioning behind or hide whit the minigun. and in red always go for the sandwich because u dont need to move a lot in defense.
I feel like the reason I basically die on cooldowm in tf2 is because of my positioning. I play Huntsman sniper, demo, heavy and pyro the most but I really hate feeling like I add nothing to the team. This video will probably help me more than aim traning, even though I miss point blank with pyro 😢
Does any other Heavy main here have the issue of overextending in a firefight despite being a tank and winding up dead in the same manner as the 0.87 minigun wind up time?
Heavy gameplay commentary is rare, so I appreciate you making this. The annotations are really helpful to understanding your thought process. However, it would be really nice if you narrated them as well. Maybe you could record commentary while re-watching your clips, or even do live commentary while playing. Also, not sure how you would fix this but the annotations get covered up by TH-cam's UI overlay when you pause (progress bar, settings, pause button etc). Maybe just put the annotations in the closed captions instead? Edit: made this comment before reaching the Borneo section, so it was a pleasant surprise to hear you doing a voiceover for it.
I honestly think that pocketing a heavy isn't that bad of a choice if the enemy team is kinda bad (not uncommon), and the heavy is legit. It'll most likely win you the game. If the enemy team has some good players that know how to focus on heavy, then yeah you are right. But considering how medics in casual pocket heavies the most, I don't think there are false expectations there.
I like this format. i prefer the voiceover to the captions. i find the darkening of the screen when captions appear to be distracting, its hard to read them and watch the gameplay at the same time, they go by too quickly, and with voiceover i get better context on what ur commenting on, because you can time your voice just so. And if you do decide to do more captions, make sure the caption is one contained sentence/ statement, or, don't let sentences spill over to the next caption. and/or use a hyphen at the end of the last word to show that its continued in the next caption, otherwise i find it very difficult to read. Thanks for the video!
respect the videos but i have a small complain: since english is not my first language its quite hard for me to keep up with subtitles and watch the gameplay at the same time. Reminding of playing gta and reading dialogues while driving. I would prefer listening since your voice is very calming
It could be your positioning, or it could be a timing thing as well. If heavy corner peeks during a team fight he is going to get a lot more value than if he corner peeks when his whole team is dead or rolling out
@@BrightPrimes yeah you should wait for your team. That is just general good practice for ANY class, its just that heavy is very slow so he can be punished really hard for taking a bad fight, compared to someone like soldier who can just jump away instantly
i watched this in two parts and months 6 i dont fully remember everything, but why do u always switch from the FoS to the minigun, instead of the FoS to the sandwich, to the minigun?
excellent, excellent, excellent video. But these annotations suck. Please make them smaller and leave them up longer so I don't have to pause the video every 5 seconds. Too hard to concentrate on gameplay and annotations. But despite this there is an unbelievable amount of instruction from this video.
“Since most of heavies skill ceiling is game sense and positioning” couldn’t have said it better myself, the fact the minigun is a shotgun does most of the aiming for you, playing heavy is almost like playing asshole sentry engineer except you’re the asshole sentry. All about being where the other guy least wants you to be.

ooohh I really like this video ngl, I actually love watching unedetied (frag montage) videos, I study over them so this video really hyped me up :D (I prefer voice over caption, but both are fine)
As a heavy main, I appreciate this video a lot. The annotations help me see if I would have done anything differently if I was in the same situation.
Thank you so much! Seeing high-skill Heavies is rare, much less seeing a _recording_ of high-skill Heavy gameplay.
so many youtubers said that heavy is close to unplayable whitout a medic and i never rly belived it, that just didint sound true to me and now i finaly have proof for 1 side.
rare to see people playing heavy like a weapon emplacement (the way hes suppose to be played) rather than those fragging a fresh install team
Great video! For some reason heavy is my favourite class and I really want more videos that show more strategic side of heavy gameplay.
heavy gameplay without a pocket is like running a marathon in flip flops, nice video
I'm not a heavy main but this is entertaining as hell, it's always interesting to see what goes through a players mind
As a medic main, the only time I'm pocketing a heavy is when they're the front of a push, and need not just pocketing, but effective crossbow tanking just to survive being the front of the push.
loved this! voice over is way better than captions btw
(Though admittedly, in a pub, the entire team could have been composed of power classes... oh who am I kidding, the average pub is still going to have 3 spies and 3 snipers, so fair enough.)
EDIT: Oh nice, a voiceover.
I personally enjoy hearing your voice over text. Your video deserves to be on Sin's gameplay channel too.
I dunno switching to my shotty when i'm unrev allows me to do more stuff than either be slow or hope i don't get caught unrevved by anyone really.
This'll be a good watch over the weekend, i'd love to get better at heavy.
I really like this format
This is peak content thank you
Scary, I'm curious, do you think you'll try to implement the 'sandvich nomming cancel' as I call it where you say another voice to stop the om nom nomming heavy does? I do it and I think it's pretty nice
Also, are there ever times where you feel that you stay revved for 'too' long?
Yeah I probably should voice cancel the sandvich voice line, I always forget.
I definitely stay revved too long sometimes, there were a couple of times during these games I should have pulled out FOS and backed up but instead I stayed revved and ended up dying
@@scarybroccoli Groovy brother. I can't wait for more videos of yours! Especially as a fellow heavy enjoyer. 'Tis a new version of 'How a Spy Thinks,' yet is all about heavy.
there should be a scout version of this
Another idea may be 'how to properly use a shotgun with Heavy'. Yeah, a sandwich is usually a superior choice, but this additional mobility and ability to pick different fights than normally heavy does IMO works fine.
solid video, started playing heavy recently, helpful vid
this video made me want to play heavy sometimes
1 suggestion. When you eat the sandvich, use any command like "MEDIC" and such to hide the munch sound.
@18:43 I still have a personal preference for the GRU, in this spot you would be outside of the line of enemy fire with the GRU, repositioning 30% faster is just as good, if not better than tanking 40% more damage
it's good! i wish you could get more popular among tf2 players
Very well done
sam my beloved
hey man, i just wanna say, personally, i love these types of videos and a lot of people might not be into that. but i totally hope you make this into a series because i love these types of videos. maybe recording some audio when reviewing the clips instead of text boxes? more effort that might not be worth it if people arent into this type of video. keep up the good work
Very underrated video
so refreshing
The second banana is pretty good if you aren't pocketed, a free 200 health every 10 seconds isn't nothing.
Edit: 11 doms? Nasty!
At the ranges you typically fight at, its DPS is far and away better than the stock Minigun’s.
fun minigun go brrrrrrrr
i used to play whit the shotgun when im in blue, is very good for instead of wating for a oportunity u can move whit the shotgun make some shots to the sniper and make his rifle flick and repositioning behind or hide whit the minigun. and in red always go for the sandwich because u dont need to move a lot in defense.
The thumbnail names are wild
Director's commentary
Enjoy both formats
I feel like the reason I basically die on cooldowm in tf2 is because of my positioning. I play Huntsman sniper, demo, heavy and pyro the most but I really hate feeling like I add nothing to the team. This video will probably help me more than aim traning, even though I miss point blank with pyro 😢
Does any other Heavy main here have the issue of overextending in a firefight despite being a tank and winding up dead in the same manner as the 0.87 minigun wind up time?
me shoot big gun, me kill enemies
works most of the time
U can use dalokhs with gru to say topped off at 350 health permanently.
Bro sounds like SpaceGuyOnline
24:50 that was 6 crits in a row
I honestly think that pocketing a heavy isn't that bad of a choice if the enemy team is kinda bad (not uncommon), and the heavy is legit. It'll most likely win you the game.
If the enemy team has some good players that know how to focus on heavy, then yeah you are right.
But considering how medics in casual pocket heavies the most, I don't think there are false expectations there.
Very helpful info but i recommended voicing over if you can. Hard to read and watch at the same time.
Thanks for the video!
i actually prefer NOT to have a pocket medic when i play (soldier/demo). gives me more of an organic gameplay feel.
respect the videos but i have a small complain: since english is not my first language its quite hard for me to keep up with subtitles and watch the gameplay at the same time. Reminding of playing gta and reading dialogues while driving. I would prefer listening since your voice is very calming
Hello, how did you remove the explosion of projectiles like the demoman and soldier
Whenever I play it always seems like I die so fast, I don't know if it is because I am playing too aggressively or what
It could be your positioning, or it could be a timing thing as well. If heavy corner peeks during a team fight he is going to get a lot more value than if he corner peeks when his whole team is dead or rolling out
@@scarybroccoli So I should wait for my team or a slightly coordinated push?
@@BrightPrimes yeah you should wait for your team. That is just general good practice for ANY class, its just that heavy is very slow so he can be punished really hard for taking a bad fight, compared to someone like soldier who can just jump away instantly
Man i love you
I feel like with your approach, you would benefit more from using dalokas or banana
can you upload footage playing heavy in dustbowl?
Great and informative 👍👍
i watched this in two parts and months 6 i dont fully remember everything, but why do u always switch from the FoS to the minigun, instead of the FoS to the sandwich, to the minigun?
Too lazy
Are you using KDE Plasma? I can tell because of the breeze cursor. Absolute madman.
Yes lol
excellent, excellent, excellent video. But these annotations suck. Please make them smaller and leave them up longer so I don't have to pause the video every 5 seconds. Too hard to concentrate on gameplay and annotations. But despite this there is an unbelievable amount of instruction from this video.
please do the same thing for demo/soldier!
“Since most of heavies skill ceiling is game sense and positioning” couldn’t have said it better myself, the fact the minigun is a shotgun does most of the aiming for you, playing heavy is almost like playing asshole sentry engineer except you’re the asshole sentry. All about being where the other guy least wants you to be.
is that real scarybroccoli??
Can you do this for demo pls?
also, do you play on linux?
Yes I am on linux
make one video like this for demo
