The Nekomata design from Persona 3 always stuck with me, it's just one of those designs that's hard to forget. The face mask that suggests a feline face, the oddly structured white fur coat, the black bodysuit underneath that almost has a ballerine quality to it, the extended claw-like finger nails, the thin white tail, and that seductive crawling posture -- they feel like a woman wearing a somewhat abstract cat cosplay while at the same time there's clear beastial over-sized eyes to confirm it's not. It's design decisions, while they all definitely work... at the same time they make me wonder why they were made. It's a curious feeling, and one I have had with the SMT franchise more than most.
Ironically, I used to play D&D 5e as an astral self monk, a subclass of monk known to be able to manifest a projection of their own soul and fight with it. The thing is, my monk initially had a lot of anger issues and because of that, his astral form manifested as an Oni whose face looked like a Hanya mask. As he became older and wiser, his astral form changed to resemble a Karasu Tengu. He built his own monastery and became fiercely protective of his pupils. His anger didn't really go away but he learned to direct it at the proper targets. It's as if he had an Oni for his starter persona and his ultimate persona was Karasu Tengu

In fact Megaten seems to have quite a few stock sound effects in use, one time I was held at gunpoint to watch madoka magica one time and noticed that a sfx used in it was also the charge sound effect used in IV.
The Kurama tengu isn't a race, but a specific character; Sojobo. Sojobo is a daitengu who lives on top of Mt. Kurama in northern Kyoto, hence the name. He's held with great reverence, and is said to be the king of tengu. Sojobo is notable for for training a young boy named Ushiwakamaru, who later grew up to become Minamoto Yoshitsune. Kurama Tengu and Yoshitsune have special negotiation dialogue in SMT 5 referencing this, too!
I don't get why SMT Nekomata is considered a "top tier demon waifu." Like, pixie and the other fairies (Sylph, Undine, Titania, High Pixie, Hau Tao, etc) are literally RIGHT THERE. Ah... what I would do to become one of them... fluttering everlasting in starlight...
This morning I listened to Tony4you video on worst demon designs, and learned that he likes crows so I was not surprised by how much he seemed to enjoy talking about Yatagarasu
I love how SMT portrayed Ippon-Datara, especially in the Raidou Kuzunoha games. They're such a wildcard personality and speechwise yet super useful fo changing something useless into something valuable, like turning twigs into treasure (which I definitely didn't abuse early game).
"[Ippon-Datara] is one of the weirder yokai" I mean, I'd say a one-legged blacksmith demon is comparatively tame in a mythology that includes (and here's just a couple of my personal favs) a fat snake, ass-sucking and cucumber-eating turtlemen, a toilet demon that'll strangle you if you ask for blue TP, and I guess just an old lady living alone in the snowy mountains.
I don't blame you for not bringing Mamedanuki into this conversation because honestly there's nothing to talk about. Also one of my least favorite designs. Not sure if it was done by Kaneko or not but damn, they treated my favorite yokai dirty!
It's weird that the three great disaster yokai: tamamo no mae, ibuki douji, and sutoku tennou dont really have representation in the series, at least no modern interpretation
My favorite is Taira no MASAKADO. 7 feet man who was betrayed by the Japanese government and didn't make him emperor. So he rebels and gets beheaded and haunts the whole country to this day. His gravesite in Tokyo still stands and people say he caused the great Kanto earthquake.

Yatagarasu is a favorite of mine as well! Something interesting I find about it is that Yatagarasu shares similarities to the Thunderbird: both are divine birds that act as messengers between the heavens and earth, though elementally they are opposed to each other (Yatagarasu is the Sun, Thunderbird is storms and lightning). Also it's just a common thing in a lot of mythologies that crows/ravens are used as godly messengers (see also Odin with his ravens)
Your description of the koppa tengu made me think, is there such a thing as ineffective torment? Like giving your tormentees a foot massage or reading them bedtime stories lol
Sorry, I just had to chime in-- the sun birds of Chinese mythology actually predated the concept of Yin and Yang-- there's even a sun bird depicted in a silk banner found in the Mawangdui tomb of Lady Dai, wherein the sun crow is depicted with two legs. While sun bird totems were apparently found since long before the still-existing mythos have even been conceptualized, the earliest *extant* story about the sun birds would say that 10 sun crows existed. They would be flown by their mother Xihe from the mulberry tree Fusang in the far East to the Ruo tree (also believed by some to be a mulberry) in the West, before traversing the underworld from Ruo back to Fusang at night. This myth is regarded as founding myth to the Shang dynasty, and the 10 birds in questions are believed by some to refer to the 10 days that might have comprised a week in the era's calendar, which are supposedly named after the kings of the dynasty*. Later on, in possibly folklore created to explain or justify the supplantation of the Shang by the Zhou, Houyi was said to have shot down 9 of the 10 sun crows when one day all 10 birds came out, scorching the world. In the Classics of Mountains and Seas (Shanhaijing), Guo Pu commentated that the birds likely had 3 legs because that was common belief about the birds at the time, but it's worth noting that Guo Pu existed well over 1,000 years since the fall of Shang dynasty, and over 7 centuries after the Warring States era, which is believed to be the approximate time period when Shanhaijing was believed to have been written by a number of anonymous writers, later collected into one text. I.e. the inclusion of Yang and the number 3 possible came *after* the birds' association with the sun. You didn't say anything /wrong/ in the video, but I just found the whole way the myths changed across the millennia from the Shang dynasty all the way to Tang to be absolutely fascinating. Especially since a lot of groundbreaking and persistent concepts, such as Wuxing and Yin-Yang came into being after the fall of Shang, coloring perception of the dynasties prior in an act of making the past more comprehensible to "the modern man" of the age. * It's a foundational myth because the Shang people believed themselves to have been descended from a Dark Bird (玄鸟 xuan niao, quite literally dark bird)
Iirc on the question about Tengu, Kami can be kinda confusing because technically anything can be a Kami but then there's also the Heavenly beings of Kami and the relationship to Yokai is a bit odd too. Basically from my understanding a Tengu can be either a kami or a Yokai depending on the individual situation
