I know this video is a week late but honestly it's not my fault... a goblin ate my script, that is the totally believable and 100% legit excuse I'm going with. Also no goblins were harmed in the making of this video.

The thing about getting goblins out of your home with clothes reminds me of a German fairy tale:
A cobbler and his wife have three of them living in their house, always finishing unfinished shoes during the night.
One night the wife decides that they deserve a nice reward, especially since the nights are cold and the poor creatures must be freezing. So she and her husband make beautiful miniature clothes for them and hide during the night, to see what will happen.
The three goblins find the clothes and are seriously happy to get some fancy clothes.
So they decide that with these new clothes, they don't want to be cobblers anymore and disappear from the house. But they leave a blessing behind so the cobbler's business flourishes for as long as he and his wife live.
I really like this tale. For me it's one about gratitude and appreciation of hard work.

I think thats a pretty common fairy tale, The Elves and the Shoemaker. Although, I've never heard it summed up so completely and thoroughly by anyone before. You were able to get the whole story in just a few sentences. Nicely done.

Since this is a reference to goblins in modern forms of Japanese anime/manga, has anyone read the manga or the light novel of Re: Monster? I am mostly curious since it is another isekai like Reincarnated Slime and in it the MC actually starts out as a goblin. They also change up the folklore of the goblins in this story, having it be like goblins are a kind of beginning larvae form of monster and depending on the training and accomplishments that goblin achieves they can become other types of monsters, with some exceptions.

I'm an English major who's planning on going into fantasy writing. For years, Goblins, Trolls, and Orcs go hand-in-hand as evil humanoid minions of the Dark Lord in so much fantasy. In my series, I'm turning that trope on its head with the 3 clans have their own distinct cultures, traditions, and lifestyles, just as sentient and capable of good and evil as the Elves, Dwarves, and everyone else. And instead of being allies their respective nations are sworn enemies and have been at war with each other for centuries.

My mother and grandmother would talk on occasion of their houses dumavoys, russalkas and voydyanis since they were of Russian descent. In the webcomic Goblins (a fantastic webcomic I highly recommend it) the goblins are portrayed more as a nomadic neolithic society who are only "evil" because of their god Magubliyet that constantly demands messed-up things. It's based on Dungeons and Dragons (3.5e) and shows goblins in a light rarely seen in fiction.

In Dragonfable and other games by Artix Entertainment, you can encounter goblins that are called "sneevil". Mostly your typical goblins, except one thing; they don't want gold, they want boxes.
They absolutely love empty boxes, even more than cats, and will do everything to get their hands on them, which is the plot of a number of quests.
And then there is that time when the player buys the loyalty of a sneevil king and his entire army with thousands of boxes, all though the king only knew that "thousands" is more than 5.

@@brandonharris9160 Well, perhaps a subspecies of Man. This video was on goblins, & yes, the Anunnaki supposedly created Man in their image, for the purpose of mining gold, according to the Ancient Sumerians, but gold isn’t all that was mined, & there are stories of them also creating a smaller race of dwarves as well, who were supposedly even better suited to mine deeper within the earth where the air was more toxic & unbearable for Man. There are images of them supposedly in some Ancient Egyptian art, archeologists just calling them dwarves. It’s all speculative, of course, because we are talking ancient mythologies, & then trying to apply those folklore stories to what we know exist in modern times. (Incidentally, there are stories of Native Americans that include both tribes of giants, but lesser known also tribes of little people. It’s hard getting information on this because nothing was written down, so it was primarily anecdotal accounts that had been passed down)

Actually! I just did the research! I've been researching the Wendat natives previously from my area of the Great Lakes, and their story of the young giant Kitchekawana and his father Manitou. A giant from Niagra Falls slayed a snake that was making local tribes sick. He lured it to the mouth of the falls and cut off its head, but its body blocked the river and caused a great buildup of water, which collapsed the giants large cavern home that existed underneath the falls, creating the current "U" shape in the falls. In the end the giant was successful, but lost his home.

You know what the crazy thing is? I was lead to this by observing land formations in Northern Canada that appear as if the were carved out by a massive massive giant huge slithering thing. And then I found massive giant human footprints in Nunavut. To the left of Nanisivik. Then I found them everywhere across the globe. We were looking too small. Some of these giants were over 2km tall, as ludicrous as that sounds to us little people. They weren't from here. There is a lineage of giants that can be traced back to a giant of the stars Uranus/Oranus and a female earth giant Gaia from my research.

Archfey is a good bet, though. Ol' Rumplestiltskin ticks all the Archfey boxes... except the ugliness. Most Archfey are SUPER vain and choose nothing but the most beautiful of forms when they change shape. This is not to say that a particularly clever or deceitful (or humble lol fat chance) Archfey wouldn't take on the form of a wizened gnome or goblin.

In Dungeons and Dragons, Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins are actually unrelated. Trolls are related to Ogres and Giants, Orcs are related to Elves and Humans, and Goblins are related to Hobgoblins and Bugbears.
In the works of Tolkien, there is basically no difference between Orcs and Goblins (the few differences having been explained in the video) while Trolls were magically created living weapons (like the Dragons and Balrogs) from when all the Elves and weird demigods were fighting with each other over who sung the wrong notes in the song that made the world.
In folklore, Trolls and Goblins are also unrelated, with Trolls being mainly large solitary predators while Goblins tended to be more social and "civilized" sometimes even living in human dwellings and towns and co-operating with the locals (always in secret). Goblins were also considered faeries and related to Elves while trolls were not as far as I know. Trolls are from Norse mythology whereas the mythological origins of Goblins are a little more unclear (probably Greece though). I'm not sure if Orcs existed in folklore or if Tolkien made them up.
In World of Warcraft, Goblins and Trolls are related to each other while Orcs come from another planet entirely although they now all co-exist and co-operate in a single society.
      I hope that helps.

From the moogs of the plane of Rath to the hardened warriors and survivalists of the plane of Tarkir the goblins of the magic multiverse provides examples of all the archetypes you mentioned along with some truly unique and interesting twists on the goblin concept.
Among the the greatest examples of goblin kind of the multiverse we have Squee a goblin from the plane of dominaria. After being caught by the Phyrexians during their invasion of his home plane he was cursed with immortality so his captors could enjoy themselves by killing him over and over again.
As a card flavor text informs us squee doesn't view his condition as a curse and as a side effect he's also the oldest known goblin in the multiverse and for a short lived and accident prone race that's quite impressive.

13:00 Goblin is simply a synonym for orc in the books and the distinction between them that exists in the Jackson's movies doesn't exist. Hobgoblins a name for large orcs, like the Uruk-hai, but they are still both goblins and orcs.

Yes, hobgoblin was going to be the name for larger orcs, but after a second research Tolkien discovered that hobgoblins weren't actually bigger or more powerful than goblins ("the statement that hobgoblins were 'a larger kind' is the reverse of the original truth") so the name got forgotten.
Everything is correct, I don't know why both terms are so confusing to many.

I had a character years back that has gained some renown in my local area named Badric. Badric started life as an idea in my head of a Goblin that thinks he's a Halfling. After a few sessions, that was abandoned and he became essentially a shenanigans character with insanely good luck. I don't mean he had feats that allowed for rerolling or anything like that. Whenever I was playing him, my dice rolled for the best possible outcome. I have since retired those dice, kept near his mini.
(They're absolutely magic, by the way. I took them out to use as a DM and TPKed the party five times in one session.)
Anyways, over the course of the campaign, he became a master chef, a pirate captain, a gypsy king, and a god, just to name a few of his minor accomplishments. Oh, and he killed a demon prince with back-to-back smites. Because Bard, that's why.
He has since made appearances in friend's campaigns as an NPC, usually a trickster deity messing with the party for bottle sessions.
