Today there is no competition, Type R are setting new records at numbreous tracks around the world, they are in direct competition with Ferrari, Mercedes and red bull !
The 90's were one of the best decades for cars! Honda made so many sports cars and coupes along with all the rest of the Japanese brands. The 2000's were the death of most of them and became a dull stale decade, much like the 70's and 80's. Its mind blowing to see how much an NSX still fetches 20 years later!!! I miss the amount of amazing cars that we had in the 90's!
So your telling me that the 65 grand 700hp hellcat isn't as fun as the 80 grand 1990s NSX!? Or a 2014 Camaro Z28 track monster for 73 grand? Hey the 90's may have been ok, but my friend you are living in the best decade for performance!
youngblood23rb that NSX will turn more heads than any challenger or Camaro, sorry to burst your fantasy bubble. Todays cars have 20 years more of technology too. I am simply stating that the 90s had some of the best cars in decades.
I installed the Science of Speed TVS Supercharger in my '95 Midnight Purple Pearl. Now, with 415hp, it's exactly how it should have come straight from the factory. Absolutely incredible.
Wow. What a car. I love watching good reviews on the first gen NSX. Easily my favorite car ever made. The NSX made Ferrari and Lamborghini step their game up.
So........I guess this could be considered a porn RR, just going by the description!!!!! And 25 years on, I still believe that the NSX HAS to have one of the most beautiful & well organized dash layouts of ANY exotic!!!!
Thanks for mentioning the marketing department. I remember reading an early review in Car&Driver where they said they wouldn't do a targa due to the added weight and detrimental effects on handling/steering. Oh well.
It was a shame Acura couldn't find a way to package in over 300hp. That 270 hp number was really under whelming when compared to other cars of the era especially other super cars. You could buy a camaro with 275 hp. Kind of relegated the NSX to also ran status during the day. I know they've gotten really popular with car speculators but when they first came out they were disappointing when compared to Ferrari and Lamborghini. That's what I remember.
There was a gentlemen’s agreement at the time between the Japanese automakers to not exceed 276 horsepower. That’s why most sports cars from that era (Supra, RX-7, 3000 GT VR-4, NSX, 300ZX TT etc) has 270-300 hp (a few extra ponies were advertised for non-Japanese markets)
Okay, so, the Targa added over 100 lbs, it decreased rigidity, it was crazy loud with the top off (because it wasn't designed to be open topped), the loss of rigidity apparently resulted in increased understeer (front end plow), loss of agility is terrible news for a mid engine car, as it's sacrificing so much for it. YEah, no yeah... Way too much lost for a big sunroof.
It’s because of extra chassis bracing. Same with convertibles; most people think they would be lighter without a roof, but extra chassis bracing to make up for structural rigidity lost due to having no roof (along with the cloth/hard top structure and motor etc) adds up to more weight than the original. I agree though, having a targa top isn’t worth the extra price and weight.
My 97 camaro z28 will match this car in a straight line but I'm sure this nsx will beat me in the curves...but as far as power goes there's nothing better then big v8 torque which my camaro has over 330 compared to 210 on the nsx?? Not to mention that the camaro ss for 97 had more power then the z28 and was more intune to take the curves a bit better but still nothing like the nsx!!
Ahh when cars were cars, None of this "My DCT can shift faster then yours" bullshit, No "It can gor around the Nurburgring in 7xx" Shit, SO tired of that, Cars back then werent about marketing like they are today, You could drive them and enjoy them so much differently back in the 90s, Not saying better tech is a bad thing, But i think for the most part, Its not making cars better, Atleast n alot of ways.
I agree with you not to mention with all this new safety tech of braking for you and telling you when theres a car next to you and so on is like why even buy a car? why not just take a cab or hire a limo driver? i love to drive and be in total control....not to mention with all that tech there's bound to be more things that will break and or sensors that need to be replaced....just more money and pain.
Exotic?! Cause it has aluminum, lol. Lots of cars used aluminum. Maybe carbon fiber back then would've been exotic. Super car?! Ha ha running a 14 sec quarter mile...Weak! This is what all the Honda boys have to look up to. No wonder 15-17sec civics are fast. Lol. Oh shit my car runs 12-13 with car seats and groceries in it maybe I have a super duper car. Stick to lawnmowers Honda
This was, and still is, one of the best handling cars you could buy. As for your straight line acceleration, who gives a fuck? 1/4 mile times, unless stupidly quick, are not impressive. I've seen fucking schools buses do 10s standing on their rear wheels the entire quarter mile. That is literally a fucking box. Going fast in a straight line is NOT hard to do, and is the single most worthless performance stat to brag about. Let alone to be the singular focus. The NSX will take turns without even trying that'll put your grocery getter in the ditch. Styling was NOT the reason this was called the Japanese Ferrari. These cars were so well built and engineered that even doubling the power didn't upset the chassis.
I’ve had multiple 200+ mph Corvettes (hit am indicated 212 in my 02’Z06), several muscle cars that ran 10’s and 11’s, 350Z’s, BMW’s, AMG Benz’s, Porsche’s etc.; I would love to have an NSX. They were crazy tech for the time. When they came out in 91’, they performed as well as the comparable Ferrari (348) w/ far more reliability. They were cheaper to boot. The VVTi-L system they used was really good at the time as well. There are just so many intangibles.
youngblood23rb Good point. I was just re-watching the Retro Review : Japanese Turbo Coupe Shootout to compare the 0-60 & 1/4-mile times with this car. Now I know why several of the car magazines (back in the day) were saying the NSX was ready for a V8 by this point in its life cycle.
HJ Farooqi You're really reaching when you call the NSX a 'supercar' when it performs at a sports cat level. You mentioned it's main rival was the 355 which wasn't a supercar, not with its poor performance.
HJ Farooqi Hey I respect all you guy's opinion, I just don't think you can throw an engine in the back of a car, charge 80 grand in 1990's and call it a Supercar. But that's just me.
HJ Farooqi That's where your ignorance and overall stupidity shows as peformance, luxury and prestige and the inevitable cost of values is what elevates what would been just an exotic car into supercar territory. Look up the universal agreed definition of a supercar, not what you as an unlearned individual feels. As lame as this sounds "thiers levels to this shit", thier are rules to earning the supercar title it's not like the very loose sports car title or exotic which just means a very pricey sports car in most cases. A 15 year run not very impressive on the sports car level the NSX played on and comparing it to a manufacturer like Lamborghini makes no sense when the likes of them and Ferrari have cars that constantly evolve in all manner into something greater in a short period of time, the NSX was refined but was otherwise the same even at the highest level all it had over other models was aero and cosmetic improvements. Also don't try to use production lengths as the S2000 didn't last long either. Again, ignorance and stupidy. American is huge land mass with a lot of open space, buyers weren't in low power and twitch handling but even so domestic cars haven't been land boats since the 80's and that was pretty much exclusive to sedans and large two doors. Check some more of these old Motor Week videos because domestics didn't peform too bad back in the day despite the negative image. Oh, and last I checked GM alone could fend off Europe and the lone GTR by itself in terms of track peformance and you'd know that if you where an enthusiast worth a damn.
The early to mid-nineties were a good time for Honda. The Accord, Prelude, NSX, Civic, were all high quality and competitive.
Today there is no competition, Type R are setting new records at numbreous tracks around the world, they are in direct competition with Ferrari, Mercedes and red bull !
Don't forget, the S2000 finished off the 90s, in 99 as a 2000 model!
Forgot the integra and legend
Don't forget the Acura Vigor.
But I love my '00 accord lol

One of the best car I've ever owned.

That's $124,000 adjusted for inflation.

Those were the days...
Jesus Christ dude, how many times do you need to row through the gears? 3:07-3:16
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials That's what happens when you are so short on torque
Did you click the link? The car is stationary but he goes through every gear TWICE.
Lol I thought the same
GT6SuzukaTimeTrials Fast and the Furious, enough said!
Exactly wow LOL!
This was my dream car as a kid. 😍

The nsx aged really well.
Such a beautiful car. Love these "retro reviews".
Thanks for mentioning the marketing department. I remember reading an early review in Car&Driver where they said they wouldn't do a targa due to the added weight and detrimental effects on handling/steering. Oh well.
I don't think he gave the shifter enough force for my liking.
My aunt has one of these and it's in near showroom condition. It's funny to see her driving it because she's in her mid 60's
It's funny how high off the ground 90's cars were. not to mention how thick the tires were.
3:07 wtf are you doing with the stick, that's NOT how to change gears?? Jesus like a caveman...
mmdirtyworkz why Americans hate manual lol
For a second I thought there was a NSX turbo that I never heard of
"But then, time - and the yen - wait for NO man." Wow, what a funny comment...the whole review is nostalgic vintage 90's lingo.
Still a beautiful car even today.
Life was good in the 90s
When it comes to the NSX, I either want an original '91 model, or 99+ but nothing in between.
Can I ask why?
Because 91 is the original, and in 99 they introduced double-cone synchros and 17" wheels. There's no reason to own a 92-96.
No love for the type R?
If they had ever put real power in these Cars the values would be stratospheric
agreed. those times should be 1 sec quicker all around.
The REAL NSX
The 1991 Supra with a sport roof is 110 lbs heavier than a hard top.
Beautiful
The NSX is great.

NSX 4 life
The 95 Z28 got the exact same acceleration numbers. The nsx is a better car but that seems underpowered even for the time
Peak Honda!
in 2 reviews they didn't like the interior
3:17 wish that were still the case today
looks like the original Toyota MR2. stretched in back.
Grand Turismo (PSX) lol :)
3:09 .... Why you gotta be so rough? Did they not have any mechanical sympathy in the 90's?

Comparing this version against the new one and it’s easy to understand why the current model is such a poor seller.
The "T" is for Trump. He had an NSX. Good taste Mr. President.

So the Acura Targa Top is perfect for that girlfriend that just won't shut the f******!
95lbs more is too much for that roof
