James Foster Thats exactly what I was saying lol but yeah :) This car totally would've looked fresh in the mid 2000s at best. This is like the only 90s car I wouldn't mind owning at all. Being that it's already 24 years old and still one of the best sports car STILL today. It's a sad shame there isn't too many out there anymore.
abu ess exactly. It's too bad they didn't run it around their test road course. Back then the handling blew the doors off of a lot of high end manufacturers. And it's even very competitive today on a road course with minimal upgrades.

I just bought one from a first owner last week with an 41,284 miles on the digital mileage, and I paid 40,000$ for it? Well, it worth it and it is a black with ivory and black trims interior, 6 speed manual, and hardtop with no wing. Took the car 3 days after I went to the insurance to buy my ride an full coverage insurance... Went to Fontana raceway 4 days after.. And I've ran 13.13 seconds at 109.08 mph... ? The car were bone stock!!! And took it to the truck scale to weight it with a full tank of gas.. For a bragging right to all of the supra forums who wanted to know what was the real weight of the car.. Mine was 3,416 pounds.. Wow!! And mine is a 1993 premium edition. I guess it is really worth it!!
I suspected the time on this road test was off 0-60 in 5.1 but only a 14 flat? I recall them running low 13 to high 12's . The 14.0 would have it struggling to outrun the 2013 6mt Accord Coupe V6.
Car and Driver tested the 1993 Supra Turbo at 4.6 seconds to 60, 1/4 in 13.1 @ 109, and 3480lbs. But many suspect that car was a ringer with the boost turned up.
Jack Allen wow expensive but still such a cool car. I think the 87 supra is a better looking car than the Porsches too. I don't know what it is about that angular style but i Love it
Yeah it is kinda odd that it didn't have a full set of gauges in The Toyota flagship. 90's Japanese-made cars had a gauge or button for everything. Look at the stereo in the Supra!
Yeah the dude was a real fucking idiot if you notice, he has nothing bad to say when he's talking about euro trash, but as soon a a JDM classic pops up he has everything to complain about.

Anyone comparing this car to a Camry/Accord needs to do some research. First of all the 320/315 hp/tq Supra TT in almost all the actual road test and comparisons would hit 0-60 in 4.8 - 5.1 secs, 1/4 mile in 13.3 - 13.5 @ 106-108 mph. Not to mention the car had incredible grip .98gs and it's braking record was unmatched for years until Porsche finally beat it. So way back in 93-98 those were some of the best performance figures of any car in it's segment and even above it. The Getrag 6-Speed is as durable as all hell and the 2JZ-GTE engine is a proven tuner legend. I collected all the mags during that time and own a 95 Turbo model myself, so I know what I'm talking about. In stock form I think we all know that it's potential is not even scratching the surface. Because even 20+ years later no new re-badged Accord/Acura or Camry can match 90s model stock Supra performance specs or driving experience. Also one last thing, even stock the car is geared to hit 175-180 mph. Only thing stopping it was the built in speed limiter capping the fun at 155 or so.
In 93 I had a 5 speed 5.0 with H pipes and it was fast then. A beautiful green Supra.pulled next to me and we ran to hundred plus. Saw his very futuristic cool lookIng triple taillights getting smaller and smaller. At that moment I knew I had seen something from the FUTURE
Suave House For the cost difference a Mustang or Camaro could be made to dust this overpriced Japcrap EASILY. It would take minimal work for an LT-1 powered Camaro to pass this.....
@@Lucille69caddy this so called Japcrap misnomer came stock with forged internals that could handle 800 hp of boost before building the bottom end . Those turbos could be turned up for cheap . The 2jz was one of the best engines ever made .
Ive seen a couple go for close to 100k with low miles and unmodified, the only affordable ones you'll find are the non turbo automatics and even those are expensive
There could be a market for reproduced parts and crate engines like with classic muscle cars. I mean there will be enough demand. you got to think outside the box.
This is the way to build a sports car! I've always said this; I'll say it again....give me a sports car with a *bulletproof well designed engine* (forged internals, iron block, etc), a *bulletproof drivetrain* (handles/transfers 1500+Hp if needed) and a *stiff well balanced chassis* from the FACTORY. If you have these three main areas strengthened, this will serve as a BASIC foundation for a strong tuner car!! And the Toyota Supra has shown that throughout its years!
They had no idea how potent the motor was. The stock bottom end will handle 600 hp easy. An american V8 is shorter and will fit in more cars but the 2JZ-GTE is a masterpiece. As a V8 guy I love that motor and wouldn't mind having one. Please don't put one in a Mustang though.
This car was sold as a GRAND TOURING car, NOT a sports car. Yet the engine was built to hold 1000 hp all day long. 320 hp was under rated because these cars were putting down 300 whp in its stock form. This engine is a ~360 crank hp motor. 360 hp back in 93 was super impressive.
LA Enthusiast not really. It was a cool car but people in those days were big in to exotics and muscle.the supra was ok until fast and furious made it really popular
I remember driving by a dealer and seeing them be at 16 just down the street from me. The spoiler on the back looked badass but I thought the tires were kinda skinny looking but then there were corvettes next door at another dealer and those tires were huge back then and there was also a ZR1 but that was back in 91 and I was riding my mongoose FS1
Little did anyone know this is the car that honestly started the tuner craze with its awesome 2jz engine. I haven't found one under $25k since 2006. One day I'll get my hands on one of these cars. Anyway, please keep doing these classic reviews, I really enjoy watching these old cars we see today get reviewed when brand new.
Toyota ultimately discontinued the Supra in North America because of low sales. In 2002, Toyota stopped producing the Supra because it didn't align with Japan's updated fuel-efficiency guideline! Just like Kia Stinger!!
This Supra was a great car!! I own it's competitor '94 RX-7 (points left), but I've always had great respect for this powerful beast. One of the big selling points for me was exterior. While the Supra looks great, it seems a bit porky in my eyes. Not much different from the GTRs styling -- great car but looks are just okay.
Here in Houston, Texas. House here from bad condition can goes $40,000, good house for $80,000 and best house from $100,000-$170,000. Any luxury with dock boats go from $300,000-$1,000,000
+selerim An absolute bargain compared to the NSX's $75,000 price tag in 1994 no less with only 270hp and a five speed! Supra's are still the only Toyota's that I love and respect.
A carryover from earlier design ques. Minimal gauges were a sign of a base or stripper model. Some people, like myself, prefer continuous data, not to be alerted after the problem occurs.
1993 and it still looks like it was made in 2013. The styling was way ahead of its time for sure. I didn't realize how expensive they were in 1993. That's pretty damn expensive.
1993. man what an amazing year for Japanese performance cars. the Supra just came out, along with the final generation RX-7, plus you already had the 300zx, 3000gt and the NSX. if i could go back in time i would go to every dealership and test drive them all. i would buy the RX-7 though.
"Weight saving gone too far by using foam in the trunk"- wow, what a change in time. It just shows how late 90's era car were the peak in quality. today's use of weight saving materials are even more extensive.
Even if you take away all the aftermarket support, the Supra is still a solid car. In its stock form, its just the right amount of fast and its incredibly reliable.
What's interesting is I notice this Supra's interior is VERY similar to the C7 Corvette in overall design and layout.. Or, I guess I should say the C7's interior is similar the the Supra's :)
Yeah I know. Driver oriented interiors are the best. They make the car that much fun to drive. I don't like how Corolla's interior reminds you that it's an appliance and not an actual car. lol
+icantw8 Please don't just quote Jeremy Clarkson. Supra might be might fun to drive. But the Corolla has a much softer suspension so the ride is in fact better and it has many more creature comforts, though the material choice is cheap. It's quite sad when a Corolla is far more comfortable than Lambos, Ferraris, etc.
TheMarktop have you ever heared of sport suspention/coilovers/dampers/low profile tires? The point of stiffening a car suspention is to prevent body roll around track and to avoid the car to wonder aimlessly and give the car better handling specially at highspeed corners, obviously a corolla is a comfy daily driver not a race car and the fact That your comparing it to supercars is a big lol. And the supras interior btw looks ugly af! BUT! feels good cuz your like in a cockpit.
I remember this car back in '93. I was in undergrad in college, 21 yrs old. It was an awesome car for the time, ahead of it's time actually, and yes, expensive for '93 dollars. Still the last style Supra produced to date. They need to bring the Supra back.
They are being very cavalier about that awesome classic. Formula 1 handling and timeless styling. A perfect sports car. M3 eat your heart out! The body would appreciate it's perfection and would assimilate it.
Sometimes I wish they never used the mk4 supra in F&F. Then they would be much less popular and much cheaper... Oh and probably easier to find. They could have used a Nissan 300zx TT or something else ugh..
I had a friend with a stock 6 speed 94 Supra TT and 93 RX7 TT, I had a stock 96 3000GT VR4 and stock 93 300ZX TT, we raced them all the time, SO much fun. There will never be cars like these again, truly a great time for JDM fans.
you rarely ever see this Supra on the streets n highways! And i'm in southern Cali...just trailer queens to JDM events and up on screens showing the latest Fast n Ferocious style flics..sad
Great vid, super great car!! I have owned 2. First one was a 93 (bought new, and stolen in 97), normally aspirated that I got in August of 93. Second one, I got in December 97, twin turbo. Great great piece of machinery!!
Final Cut Studio's deinterlace filter is so-so, and I haven't tried Final Cut X's filter yet. However, my favorite method is to export the video as is from FCP as it is, to MPEG Streamclip. It's free and is really powerful for being so. www.squared5.com -Load up the exported FCP file -Set to h.264 -Set bit-rate to between 8kbps and 10kbps -Set export size to 720x480 -On the right, tell it to de-interace and turn multi-pass (slower) and b-frames on -Make sure to turn the "better re-size" on (right check box) -Click fast start (at bottom -- TH-cam likes this) Then tell it to go. If you tell it to multi-pass, it will take a while, but the compression looks really good. I also suggest Handbrake if you don't like Streamclip. If you have compressor, the de-interlace under "frame controls" is pretty decent, but takes tweaking and can be really slow. Hope this helps!!
Keep in mind the base price at the time it was released was twice as much as a Z28 Camaro. That's a big difference in price for not a lot of performance. The Supra was in Corvette price territory.
Kevin Peterson were you even alive in the 90s? Mkiv Supras were raping cars when it came out. They were all over magizane covers. So yeah they were big before F&F.
I drive a 1985 Supra and my brother had a 1987 Turbo Supra. I love my little car and the attention it gets. There are not many left on the road, and the ones that are are usually riced out lol Mine is bone stock and that's the way she's gonna stay.
Although the Supra was less well known before those movies, it was still well known. That is because many people mentioned it when they also discussed the Nissan 300ZX Twin Turbo and Mazda RX-7 Twin Turbo.

Timeless design, timeless performance. Thx MotorWeek
A tuner car is bought by 1000 people. Not worth it. It should be "tuned" from the factory.
Fan boy much? Lol
The fuck? Pretty sure these had terrible handling compared to other Japanese sports cars back in the day
@@thefuzzypickle8277 they are in fact too soft
No review can do justice to this car. It was beyond its time then and still holds its fort today. Amazing.
Can't believe i am saying this but this car is still appealing in 2021.
Here it is, 20 years later, and the Surpa still looks good to this day!
The birth of a legend. And only $35k. WOW (even when price-adjusted for 2023).
5.1 to 60 is on par with a 315hp later 4.6 Mustang, but 14.0 is must fall off as the GT did 13.5
This is what I called: a ultimate driving machine and truly classic automobile
The Toyotas I can stand are few and far between - but this thing is a unicorn. Absolutely beautiful - and that engine is legend.
Damn these were expensive.
and still are.
Did you reply to yourself?
Even automatic non turbos are up there .
Some of the most timeless styling in car history.
Give me this, an NSX, and an MR2, all stock mint, and I'm happy.
shawoo Work in the oilfield. Buy them yourself.
There is a 2JZ Viper out there, look it up on 1320Video's channel.
+Hot Rod Lincoln There is also a really sweet 2JZ-GTE 68 camaro.
EGGINFOOLS Sounds cool, I'll look it up later.
WHOA, cassette AND a compact disc player?!?!?!?!?!
One of the all-time great releases from any auto manufacturer in my lifetime.
that car must have dropped jaws in 93. it's so ahead of it's time in terms of looks.
LA Enthusiast it still does it today
As an 11 year old who saw a bright red one in front of the Toyota dealership in 1993 my jaw dropped.
LA Enthusiast not really. It was a cool car but people in those days were big in to exotics and muscle.the supra was ok until fast and furious made it really popular
richard c lol.. I was 17yrs old in 93 & trust me, we absolutely loved the Mark4 Supra
Just can't see a supra without a rear wing.
I was shocked to hear it was optional. I don't think I've ever seen on sans wing
brendan2jz They look better wingless.
Bald Supras
@@BoostedInline6 Actually, they Look better with the wing. Same goes for the lower spoiler kits all around .
@@BoostedInline6 agreed but thats probably cuz i play too much san andreas
Toyota ultimately discontinued the Supra in North America because of low sales. In 2002, Toyota stopped producing the Supra because it didn't align with Japan's updated fuel-efficiency guideline! Just like Kia Stinger!!
Can we get this over 100,000 views, please?
Done.
***** yes
+rdmccun make that 10 lol
+PussMag No need for a battle. 300ZX, in general, holds it's own. There is probably a retro review on Motor Week. Don't blame the car.
We got you fam
One of the most beautiful cars ever made! I still drool over this! I wish I could find (afford) an unriced example!!!
This car beat up on stangs regularly with ease.
$33,900 in 1992 damn that would be $57,909 in 2015 money!?
Yea because of inflation over the years. For $50,000 I rather buy a nice house for another $50,000 to make it $100,000.
+selerim A nice house for $100k? Out of interest where do you live? That seems very good value.
+selerim Worth every damn penny! Supra's an amazing car.
aaah i miss 90's everything was better than it is now
What is it with oil pressure gauges and Motor Week? I'm pretty sure that was already checked by the electronics back then.
Not good!......
Even a base S10 has an oil pressure gauge, why skimp?
A carryover from earlier design ques. Minimal gauges were a sign of a base or stripper model. Some people, like myself, prefer continuous data, not to be alerted after the problem occurs.
Many people did not trust a warning light to come on in an emergency. That is why they preferred mechanical gauges.
The styling of this car is so ahead of its time! It actually looks like a 2000's era car.
NSX , Supra, and the Rx7 was the best 90s Japanese cars ever made.
+Taylor Mordoch Agree on NSX & Supra not sure about those rotary engine cars, lol
Umm Skylines?
Slivia? Gtr?
Or the 2nd Gen GSX for us broke people. Lol
Integra Type R which could beat almost anything at tsukuba.
1993 and it still looks like it was made in 2013. The styling was way ahead of its time for sure. I didn't realize how expensive they were in 1993. That's pretty damn expensive.
Love these retro reviews, and this car is timeless! Makes me wish the new one wasn't a restyled BMW
Budget costs. At least it got made unlike the LFA, we’re never gonna get one of those ever again.
@@elmandarin1002 And if Toyota had built the MK5 Supra by themselves, it literally would've had a Price Tag of the Honda NSX and those sold poorly
G29 CURRENT GENERATION BMW Z4 wouldn't had existed without the Supra MK5. Go figure
1993. man what an amazing year for Japanese performance cars. the Supra just came out, along with the final generation RX-7, plus you already had the 300zx, 3000gt and the NSX. if i could go back in time i would go to every dealership and test drive them all. i would buy the RX-7 though.
I love these Classic MotorWeek videos with John Davis. Keep em coming!!!
The interior of this Supra looks more modern than the current Corolla. Amazing...
+icantw8 Except for the fact that it doesn't.
Some car's never get old and this is one them for sure this car still looks good after all these years
John, these retro features are terrific! I haven't missed any of your TV shows from it's inception. Great work!
I love watching the old retro Motorweek videos!!! Keep them coming, love the new shows also! Always have my dvr set to record these.
still one of the best looking cars of all time IMO. And I am far from a Toyota fan. I wish they could bring one back
I remember this car back in '93. I was in undergrad in college, 21 yrs old. It was an awesome car for the time, ahead of it's time actually, and yes, expensive for '93 dollars. Still the last style Supra produced to date. They need to bring the Supra back.
This car is STILL gorgeous!
Looked 10yrs ahead of its time!
Although it's as old as me, I wanna see the road test! 0-60 is really satisfying back to 1993.
They are being very cavalier about that awesome classic. Formula 1 handling and timeless styling. A perfect sports car. M3 eat your heart out! The body would appreciate it's perfection and would assimilate it.
And they still command a price today
This car still looks so great today...I bet Toyota could make them just the way it is and they would sell them all. I would buy one in a heartbeat!
Scotty Kilmer's dream car.
id take this over most cars out there hence their value
I loved seeing this car when I was in high school and dreamed of having a drivers license and get my first car!
I think those stock 17in rims look beautiful on this car and they dont look small at all....
Sometimes I wish they never used the mk4 supra in F&F. Then they would be much less popular and much cheaper... Oh and probably easier to find. They could have used a Nissan 300zx TT or something else ugh..
MannyFresh1x me too. i got 2 300zx i would be rich now damn.
I had a friend with a stock 6 speed 94 Supra TT and 93 RX7 TT, I had a stock 96 3000GT VR4 and stock 93 300ZX TT, we raced them all the time, SO much fun. There will never be cars like these again, truly a great time for JDM fans.
these cars are still expensive even on craigslist
Lol John's humor at random spots in the reviews is always appreciated
Man this sucker still looks great!
25 years later it still looks stunning and performance numbers go along with performance oriented cars in todays age. Just amazing
A savage in the land....a true BEAST!
Toyota Supra - Legend
Thanks for posting these retro reviews, Ben. Remember watching these episodes live on MPT!
you rarely ever see this Supra on the streets n highways! And i'm in southern Cali...just trailer queens to JDM events and up on screens showing the latest Fast n Ferocious style flics..sad
And the rest are drift missiles or drag cars.
Great vid, super great car!!
I have owned 2. First one was a 93 (bought new, and stolen in 97), normally aspirated that I got in August of 93. Second one, I got in December 97, twin turbo. Great great piece of machinery!!
If Motorweek only knew they were driving an ICON with the strongest resale value of any non specialty car or regular production car!!!
95 Supra Turbo with less than 50k miles. That's my dream 🚗
My dream car I would rather have this car then almost any other that's out ther.
Love that dash and gauge setup! So clean and functional.
Y'all should start de-interlacing these old SD videos.
Hmmm, what method do you recommend? Is there an easy way to do this with Final Cut?
Final Cut Studio's deinterlace filter is so-so, and I haven't tried Final Cut X's filter yet. However, my favorite method is to export the video as is from FCP as it is, to MPEG Streamclip. It's free and is really powerful for being so.
www.squared5.com
-Load up the exported FCP file
-Set to h.264
-Set bit-rate to between 8kbps and 10kbps
-Set export size to 720x480
-On the right, tell it to de-interace and turn multi-pass (slower) and b-frames on
-Make sure to turn the "better re-size" on (right check box)
-Click fast start (at bottom -- TH-cam likes this)
Then tell it to go. If you tell it to multi-pass, it will take a while, but the compression looks really good.
I also suggest Handbrake if you don't like Streamclip. If you have compressor, the de-interlace under "frame controls" is pretty decent, but takes tweaking and can be really slow.
Hope this helps!!
Danny Carlin-Weber thanks for the wisdom, I'll give it a go
More than welcome! I've been loving these older reviews. The Japanese cars from that time were awesome.
Danny Carlin-Weber I like HandBrake myself both great programs good advice.
Absolutely am in love with mine. I'll own one till I die. Looks fabulous in the garage.
Beautiful car that nEver looks outdated!
Still my dream car. Thanks for this Motorweek.
Over 20 years later and still muscle cars worst nightmare😎😍
Not quite.
Keep in mind the base price at the time it was released was twice as much as a Z28 Camaro. That's a big difference in price for not a lot of performance. The Supra was in Corvette price territory.
I suspect a lot of people would never know what a Supra was if not for Fast & Furious lol
Kevin Peterson
were you even alive in the 90s?
Mkiv Supras were raping cars when it came out. They were all over magizane covers. So yeah they were big before F&F.
Gran Turismo surely helped with the fame as well.
Kevin Peterson you sure right but I always knew theses cars was bad ass from since I laid eyes on it back in the days wen I was a kid
Damnnnn... didnt realize how expensive these where back then!!
