The Gen 1 Acura NSX.. Terrific or Terrible? This shocked me!

  • After all these years I finally get the opportunity to drive and review the first generation Acura NXS-T and give you my thoughts. This was an iconic supercar from the 90's and it didn't disappoint. Who thought only 270hp could be this much fun to drive? What are your thoughts on the 1996 Acura NSX?

    It's a blast to drive, X. I was lucky enough to work for Acura's Canadian ad agency from '90-'93 and we were shooting the end frame for a commercial with the NSX pulling up between the Integra and Legend, at a racetrack called Mosport. And I got to drive it around the track when we were done with shooting. Still one of my favourite and most memorable rides. Thanks for the throwback!

    In the mid 2000’s I bought a 1992 5 speed manual black on black NSX. Restored the interior, put in Dynamat throughout the whole interior, in the doors and trunk. Was like a giant go kart. Stuck to the road like glue. Mine had the base rims probably 17 inch not as large as these. Love the pop-up headlights, super cool exterior design. Way ahead of its time.

    Im always amazed at well the Gen 1 NSXs aged. Slap a set of modern 19 or 20 inch wheels on them and they do not look dated at all. Absolutely incredible that a car can be up to 32 years old and still look new and have modern lines. Some cars age well, but the NSX is on a whole different level.

    I had a 1996 NSX-T Red/Tan from 1998 till this year. I modified it with a full intake, headers, Comptech supercharger and exhaust. It was pretty fast. I believe you need to inflate the spare, though I never had to. Thought the car was beautiful, with an amazing view out the front windshield. It was tough on tires. I replaced it with a Lotus Evora GT. That's like the car that Honda should have made to replace the NSX. Nothing wrong with the 2017 hybrid NSX, just Honda should have given it a different designation because it's not an NSX.

    That NSX-T is gorgeous and has aged so well. I'm sure its ridiculously expensive, but this is one of the few cases where it is probably worth it. I would urge you to buy it, but with Florida having many of the worst drivers on the planet, its not worth seeing this rare & special sports car get destroyed or hidden in a garage.

    So funny that you made a video of this car. I literally just saw one on the road last week, & had to take a photo of it! Such an iconic car. It was an instant classic!
    And for the record, Acura is Honda. Acura only exists outside of Japan. It's their "luxury"brand hust as Lexus is to Toyota & Infiniti is to Nissan.

    If I ever get my hands on one I would not change anything. I would keep the small wheels on. I love the contrast of the coupe with the black roof but I also love the targa top. Pop up lights are a must for me. And of course the manual, although I've heard good things about the auto. White, red, with tan leather or spa yellow with black leather is my preference. But the Long Beach blue with fixed lights looks so good.

    If you haven't driven one, then I can understand you not getting it. I don't mean that condescendingly. By the numbers, you can definitely make an argument for another car. If you are looking for a drivers car, this is one that you do need to experience to appreciate. I have a '91 in Silver. The manual gearbox is great. The '91 & '92 don't have power steering, so there is a great translation from the road and nothing in the way to numb the feeling. I handles great, very little body roll. I have the shortened gearing ratio which is also a great setup, which keeps you in V-tech for much more of the drive. It really is a great package.
    Sometimes the cars with more horsepower can be intimidating and rightfully so. Get on the gas too hard and you could make a big mistake. I have never felt that way in this car. It alows me to really push it, without the feeling that I am about to lose control.
    The view from the drivers seat is incredible. The A-Pillars are small, so they really don't get in the way, and about the only thing that I see in the way of the road is a 2 inches from the haunches over the front wheels. That is about it.
    I have met many owners that have sold theirs, and then pretty quickly regret it and either buy one again or are still searching for one.

    a few corrections... All NSX's from 91 to 05 are GEN 1 cars; the is no GEN 3 car (there are NA1 and NA2 cars and pre/post-facelift cars, but all are GEN 1)... The NSX uses a collapsible spare, you inflate it before using... The roof panel stows in an ultra-sneaky space within the engine cover, *_not_* in the trunk... 😉👍
    and... that's a very nice example, but not quite "mint"...

      and that number was fudged from the factory as well. As per the "gentleman's" agreement for JDM cars at the time. Ppl dyno these and 30 years later they make that at the wheels. For a 2950 lb car without the useless spare that's plenty if you drive it on fun roads. Add boost and you've got a vehicle that keeps up with A LOT of modern cars. Shoot, even the newest integra and ctr don't even keep up with it in the 1/4 mile with a good driver. (documented on hagerty- stig vs.)

    • @Boblib1970

    • @pgtmr2713
      @pgtmr2713 ปีที่แล้ว

      IIRC... 0-60 of an LT1 Z28 was 5.7 seconds stock. So if this thing does it in 5.2 ish. That's not bad at all. $80-90k for the Acura when it came out. They were for people who were tired of Ferrari's reliability, lack of comfort. It made them up their game. The crazy part was people with the means to replace them were keeping them for 10 years or more.

    • @wydopnthrtl
      @wydopnthrtl ปีที่แล้ว

      Then NSX was made to the Japanese mindset. 0-60 simply didn't matter to them. Taking it to a road coarse did. And there... it would spank any F-Body.
      Problem is... the American market / mindset IS where they were trying to sell them.
