- The Super Mario Bros. 35 challenges are upon us! Starting off with no run button! This was my first attempt at it, and I think it went extremely well :)

At first you think "Oh I lost to Kosmic, one of the greatest Super Mario Bros. players of all time. I guess losing to him's not so bad."
Then the next day you watch this and you're like "HE COULDN'T USE THE RUN BUTTON?!?!"
Like losing to Doremy or Amemiya in Tetris 99... until you learn they were doing a "no combo no tetrises no T-spin no hard-drop no holding challenge"...

I'm so glad I'm not the only one who gets so frustrated at that sudden speed up from jumping right after you land. It has killed me several times when I'm trying to be super cautious.
Yeah, I have to forcibly hold back the other direction to stop it... but sometimes it doesn't seem to do the sudden speed up and then the forcibly holding back causes death in the other direction. I just take certain jumps very cautiously that I know to be potential issues.

When I was small and played SMB, I didn't know that you could run, I thought that the button was for fireballs only. I was frustrated that I could never jump on the top of the flagpole :(

I've died multiple times from that strange mechanic, makes you run off edge for no reason.

I'm just throwing darts on a dartboard with this guess, but from a programming perspective, it may be possible that the game has some logic to check Mario's velocity to determine whether he is running or walking, and then sets a 'running state' flag accordingly.
If this is the case, it is also possible that the game is including downward velocity in that logic check. So when Mario exceeds a certain downward velocity, the logic flag is set that Mario is running, even if the B button isn't held down. If you then execute a buffered jump and Mario jumps 1 frame after landing, Mario will benefit from the 'running' flag and perform a sprint jump.
If this is what's going on, I imagine that Mario would not sprint jump if you waited 2 or 3 frames after landing, as the game could recalculate Mario's velocity and remove the running logic flag by that time.

If they made the run button give Mario more speed instead of actually make him run, your logic makes total sense. What a mess.
A "quick" fix would be to make the overall speed be split into horizontal and vertical speed, and only make the horizontal speed influence in the running flag.
@@gabrielcabral6142 I guess it would complicate the formula a bit for the jumping speed (you do go higher when running) and landing after a spring (the springs reduce your horizontal speed but I think you can run immediately after using them). The amount of people that do not run but do frame-jumps may not be high enough to valliant a fix ^^

Ok. We need a “no run” video which allows air fireballs but you must prevent running even from the mechanics. And we need a “no run button” video that full exploits the auto-run mechanics :) both sounds pretty fun.

For me you are like a hero, you had the world record to beat Super Mario Bros in less time. I saw a lot of speedruns of this game but the way you are and only the way you play inspires me to try to be a speedruner, I have only 14 years old but I’m trying to make of different classic games.
But when you blew my mind was when you did the mario challenge (the one of all marios) and I’m gonna try to do it when I have 18 or 17, so please don’t change you are my hero.

Hey! Good video! About the part where you talk about the c-stick ( 3:38 ), Ultimate actually has the best c-stick mechanics of any smash game yet. The only problem is the nair buffer (which is very difficult to do even intentionally because of the very precise timing) and the lack of customizability (not being able to limit it to not do dash attacks or aerials if you want). Melee's stick has it's share of problems, most major of which being the fact that all controls in that game are messed up without UCF (universal controller fixer), and the fact that you literally can't use c-stick in training mode, meaning most melee players had to practice using A+direction instead of c-stick. Brawl and Sm4sh had practically unusable c-sticks in their own ways.
Sorry if this comes of as arrogant, I enjoyed the video! Keep up the good content!

(1:23) That's happened to me a few times myself when I was trying to just move slowly, where I'd suddenly get a burst of speed from jumping repeatedly even though I wasn't touching the run button at all at the time. (This actually caused me to fall into a pit one time because I unexpectedly overshot the landing I was aiming for.)
(1:43) Very messed up, apparently, if you can get running speed without the run button.

Oh hey, something extremely funny also happened today. I don't know what the game thought it was doing, but it gave us 8-4 as the third level in the match. I have never seen a mario 35 match end that quickly. I think it lasted slightly more than 3 minutes.

im currently trying with permanently crouching (i start with a flower, cause if i become small mario it instantly fails in my mind), the hardest thing to get with the crouch handicap is actually time from my experience

Two ideas for challenges that I had:
No coin run might be interesting, although it would cut out such an integral part it might be really difficult.
A no-roulette run could also be interesting, going only off of what you can get in the levels.
Rouletteless would just be an easier version of coinless, since the roulette requieres coins to be used.
Nicobbq has done this challenge, you can win without touching a coin but not without getting a coin because of the rank bonus (100 coins)
