Another Great video Ben, Definitely plenty of lightbulb moments for me. The twisting of the torso towards each side of paddle stroke will give me greater stroke depth. I always thought I had to keep the torso from moving side to side. It makes sense to keep the weight on the chest and lean into each stroke. I do stop paddling hard as the wave is lifting me up and I agree that this is the worst thing to do when catching waves. I often feel like I’m trying to chase down waves to try and drop down the face, to pop up (late) as I hardly ever glide into waves. Anyhow I’m going to watch your video again & again until I re train the brain to use these techniques at the appropriate time in the water. Thanks so very much
I watch all of your videos. Epic, as usual! Many thanks 😊 especially from most of us where splashing around is a reward after a hard, hard week. After nine months of working two jobs and not being able to surf or exercise, I found that I could’t catch a wave. I watched every paddling, and many swimming and muscle building tutorials. After a year of training, found myself with friends in head high surf with my log out really deep, no leash. Couldn’t enter too critical or too flat. Waited for perfectly building wave, scratched away, caught it and road it to shore. Then stayed inside, caught a couple, got thrashed and just had fun. When you have a free moment 😀(you’re busy)please walk us through the pop-up variations. John 3:16
No worries at all Lance! Great to hear you were able to get back out there and get into some waves!! Surfings a great escape glad you're able to be back into it! No worries - will keep a pop-up variations video in the mix for the future, yewww!!! Thanks so much Lance - 🤙🙏
Thanks so much!! It definitely takes practice, but I promise you can do it 🙏🤙 there’s some more advanced techniques to use but key things are paddle efficiency coupled with great wave awareness - let me know if I can help at all! Always happy to answer more specific questions on my email or Insta 🤙🤙 theglidesurfcollective@outlook.com Insta: TheGlideSurfPerformance
Great video! I am beyond the very beginner stage of surfing but still learning how to read, paddle into and position on waves! This helped a lot with filling in some gaps and confirm some of the issues I have been having and what to do to fix them. Thanks! 🤙🏻
I had a stroke 4 yesterday ago, I'm now 68yrs old. I have been looking for a video to help me get up on my boards again but, I've been frustrated and bored with a lot of these online. I've just subscribed to your site Ben because I've been trying now for two yrs and not been able to pop up correctly due to limited mobility but I'm almost there, you're video has just shown me exactly where I'm going wrong, I'm now practising on the floor (in the North West of the UK) and have made rapid progress almost immediately. I no cannot wait to get in the water to try. I'll update you soon and thank you for this video, best regards Bernard Ryan 🫡🤙
I've only been surfing for 5 weeks now. This has been a really helpful video. I look forward to implementing your suggestions into my surfing practice tomorrow.
Put a few of these tips into action today. Recognised that I was guilty of a few mistakes mentioned, and that it was hampering my wave count. Definitely found that I was catching more waves today thanks Ben
Hey I recently found your channel and love your videos! So grateful for practical longboarding advice, especially since I live on the coast of Texas where the waves are more similar to where you surf! Definitely helps me visualize what I can do on these waves :)
Beginner here. Have seen a ton of video. Your channel has been the best and clarified many questions and problems for me. Ordered some merch (which I have no business wearing near a beach…Ha) and Subscribed
Hey!!! So so stoked its been helpful for you, always the best to hear! Thanks so much for reaching out, letting me know, and stoked to send you your product! I should be able to send out to you this Thursday!!! Thanks again for getting in touch, yewww!!! 🙏🤙
- paddle technique with driving the chest down - looking back 3x - corba (and send it!) when i notice the nose flicker, as that means the board has matched the shape of the wave and has probably caught me Thank you for this video
I hope it helps!! Have definitely found it super useful to get in the habit of checking and adjusting the paddle in terms of direction and speed depending on what the waves doing behind you! No worries at all! Yewww 🙏🤙
Brilliant - love the format of having tips broken up by skill level as most of us are somewhere in between and it helps to know what we should be comfortable with (in the early levels) vs what we should start thinking ahead to (of the more advanced). Had the best day in a while today after watching your vid over my breakfast. Cheers from nyc 🤙
I've been looking at hours of videos since 1.5y I started surfing, and I do find your explanation really thorough and on point! Eager to go back in the water and try them out
Finally got my first proper hang 5 yesterday, then my second this morning, and 3rd, 4th, 5th. Been watching the tips and tricks for a while and was reflecting on a few of your videos about noseriding and clearly somethings clicked 🙂
Yewwww so good!! 👏🙌 Always so good to hear, stoked you have had something click - enjoy the tip time!! Would love to know what you feel helped to progress , cheers Daniel and well done!! 🤙
A combination of placing a little pressure on the inside rail whilst cross stepping up the board as well as thinking about widening the stance and “poking” out the front foot with more of a straighter leg. And then also trying to slow everything down a touch so I wasn’t just going full send every time 😂 @@BenConsidine
Thanks, I needed this today. These are all good details and things I think about when out on the waves watching other surfers, and I’m sure I’ll rewatch and study as your videos are immensely helpful in assessing my own progress and developing my understanding. So keep up the good work, Ben.🤙
No worries at all! That's a pretty common one, getting some footage of yourself is best to remedy that so you can identify why the knee is hitting! if it was ever something you wanted/needed i do surf analysis coaching where I help people with this kind of thing, my email is longboardcoaching@outlook.com , only if that's something you're after though! Video analysis can be super handy for yourself to review as well! :) Cheers!
Ben, thank you! This video clearly explained all the issues and questions I have had with catching waves. This morning the “cobra” technique helped me tremendously. Question-where do we place our hands when pushing up? I found pushing off the deck worked well. When gripping the rails on take off, my hands would frequently slip down and off the board and I would miss the wave. Thanks✌️
Some good tips here🙏but positioning and reading the wave are arguably more important than the paddle. If done correctly you really don’t even need to paddle to catch the wave. And submerging your tail into the wave to generate forward momentum is an easy trick to catch even more waves❤❤
Love your videos bro. Quick suggestion: the audio volume varies alot throughout many of your videos. Doing a little audio work to equalize the volume and clarity of your voice can really step up the overall production quality of your videos.
Hey Johan!! I really appreciate that thanks!! It was definitely not great in this one I agree, sometimes when you’re editing you get used to hearing everything over and over again and it’s harder to recognise, but when I watched it back I can definitely tell what you mean, I really appreciate that though. I think I used headphones to edit as well which may have caused some problems!? Haha 🤙🤙🙏
@@BenConsidine I must say your explanation for the different techniques are very easy to follow so thank you. I've always thought to keep my upper body still when paddling but am going to try your advice on the next surf.
Very informative, but a lot of videos have not mentioned what should our lower body does on a short board when paddling. I know legs and feet have to be kept together but what about our knees? Should they touch the board and push down? Or just let them float in the water? I feel wobbling if the knees are not touching the board, but if touching, the weight distribution changed and the board tilted and created drag.
Over paddling is something I realised I was doing. My take is, you can't catch a wave, the wave catches you and you decide if it does that in a way that allows you to ride it with control.
I'm confused: @ 5:10 "it's also important to understand that the pressure on the chest here will make the board go faster as well, especially on a longboard, this is why you'll see the chest go down more as we're struggling to get into waves"
Mostly really great stuff. However, I would have appreciated more discussion surrounding the video of catching the steeper wave. The surfer had his board angled at about 45 degrees to the direction away from where the wave was breaking and had the inside rail dug into the wave so that the board was almost level (in regard to left-right tilt or roll of the board). If he had kept the board flat to the shape of the wave he would have either gone straight down to the flats or if he kept the 45-degree angle in but didn't dig in his left rail, he would not have been able to pop up. Common sense, maybe, but a discussion would have been helpful.
Totally fair call - I'll make sure to cover that in more detail next time!! You’re definitely right with what you’re saying there, the steeper the wave the earlier the inside rail engagement is needed 🙏🤙

As always, a succinct explanation - thank you. I am 76 years old and as happens as you age, I am losing strength, so these techniques are what I need.
No worries at all! I hope they're helpful and get you into some more waves! Yewww 🤙🙏
