Super helpful to think through the high line in comparison to the low line pocket and the steering back and forth. I never understood how some could slowly walk the tight rope down the wave. So much easier to feel the board lift to parallel then step forward. I get stuck because I hate losing my board!Thanks for the insightful commentary, makes a lot sense to something very baffling 😮 Drop jaw surfing those big pocket nose rides out deep. Long swim 😅
Hey Lance!!! Perfect! Yeah I love thinking about it this way and was definitely a big moment when I thought about it like this as well - hope it was helpful for you!!! If we're stepping forward with the board going downwards it doesn't always go well haha, which I've made the mistake of plenty!!!

Hey if you were to shape a high performance longboard that can be nose ridden, would you put more or less rocker than a traditional noserider? Also, how would you have your rails foiled?
Nice video! I was waiting for any clue about the design of the tail. Actually, I have a pintail (Neo Classic CJ Nelson 9'5). It's pretty tricky to noseride but is possible. Any suggest to improve in these kind of longboard? I was thinking to set a Cali Pivot 11' for more stability. PD: I love your videos hahaha
Hey Andre!!! Yeah great point, I honestly find pintails are probably one of the more difficult tail design to maintain really good locked in noserides. I often opt for a square or even diamond tail in this instance. The pin will turn better but actually harder to keep water on the tail so can make locking in more difficult. Getting a big pivot will definitely help slow down on the nose and lock in for stability though absolutely!

And great question, essentially the best noserider that I've been on is the Nova Pro and Nova Stella from South Coast Surfboards - full disclosure I ride for them but have ridden their boards for over 10 years now and love / find they;re epic!
As for other longbords - I know Thomas have the scooptail noserider which I've heard good reviews from! Then the Michael Takayama Perplexer is also supposed to be great! Great video. Where in the fin box do you recommend putting the fin...forward, back, or somewhere in between for a beginning noserider?
Hey Todd! I love it alllll the way back in the fin box, really helps for hold, the further forward you place the fin the looser and more dynamic the board will be, but for pure noseriding all the way back is the go in my opinion
This video is very helpful, though I’m nowhere near being able to noseride! For summer here in NE USA, I’m trying a Solid EZ street 9’4”. Not a traditional LB or Log, a pinned tail w/2+1, but it has that single-fin option, good rocker and rounded wide nose. As posted on Brian’s NJ site, I hope it will offer me the versatility to try a noseride… eventually. Anyway, everything you say makes perfect sense. So thanks, Ben!

Fin sizes? I definitely prefer a 10, more hold and better all round in my opinion, I’ve actually been running an 11 in my boards recently!! Have found it really useful for holding in bigger waves haha 🤙

Hey! I think length may not be quite as important as some other features for noseriding, but it depends on your size as well. I would say to be safe a 9'4 would be as small as you might like to go, and from there on and bigger things will just get more stable and secure for the noseride! But as you go bigger of course other factors like weight and manoeuvrability may be affected.
Great vid Ben. Your last 6 months worth have been awesome. The Chess one really helped me improve. A question where I surf we have a lot of fat waves....rolling spilling type waves rather than down the line pockets waves. I find I get my best nose rides almost pointed straight at the beach on theses waves but not sure how it all works. These waves are often uncrowded so great waves to practise on. Any tips for nose riding fatter spilling type waves or sections.

why the three fin system (1 big at the center and two littles at the sides) isn't good for noseriding?

From my understanding the single fins can be bigger in length and width which helps to anchor and hold/lock the tail in for the noseride. With the 3 fin setup/ 2+1 the max id really see the centre fin being is an 8-9 inch maybe and definitely following a more greenough (dolphin) shape, which isn’t preferable for holding long critical noserides, I hope that’s helpful!! 🤙🙏

Ben, what length leg rope do you recommend for long boards. My board is 9”8”. I wear one for the safety aspect of others.
Might I suggest a 10' knee leash. DAKINE makes a good one.

Hey Wayne!! I find the good 9 foot knee leash usually does the trick for anything under 10 foot so I think that should be the go! I prefer knee leashes because they stick out of the toes, but I'm sure an ankle leash would work just as well if you're more used to them :)

As far as the rockers are concerned a 60/40 or a 50-50 would be better for hanging 10?
