- Former Indonesian President Sukarno’s daughter Sukmawati Sukarnoputri will be converting to Hinduism on October 26. Sukarnoputri, who is the third daughter of Indonesia’s founding president, is the founder of the Indonesian National Party. According to reports, Sukarnoputri’s late Balinese grandmother, Ida Ayu Nyoman Rai Srimben, had a big influence in her life. According to CNN Indonesia, Nyoman Rai Srimben was a Hindu from Singaraja City in Bali. Reports say that Sukarnoputri’s decision to convert to Hinduism has gone through a long process. Despite being the largest Muslim country, Indonesia has a historic connection with Hinduism.

I'm Indonesian Chinese descendants, mahayana Buddhism parent, raised in Catholic school, now at the age of 43, I'm falling in love with Hinduism, especially advaita Vedanta, the non dualism. TH-cam introduced me to Sri Ramana Maharasi, papaji, sri nisargadatta maharaja, etc. Advaita Vedanta change my life totally, from 12 years of drug addict and prisons, to who I am now. @@PingPong-wr1cl I partially agree with you brother. I accept that all of these problems are there but they are not so dominant that you will see this everywhere. You can go through these in few rural parts of India. India was divided in more than 565 Princely State & every state has a different culture, language, cuisine, clothing etc. Where there is diversity, there would be some conflict and same applies on India.
But when you just focus on the teachings of Hinduism neutrally by putting all these social & political rubbish away , you will realise why I said Hinduism is precious. It will take time brother to search it out.
I will say one thing to you about Hinduism that We all live together peacefully because of teachings of Hinduism. There would always be some minor clashes for political gain. But people of India love each other.

I'm not a religious person but attracted to both Hinduism and Buddhism(according to the hinduism, Buddha is one of the dasavatars of Vishnu). These religions very calming, peaceful and close to nature. This is the reason why I love anything to the east of India (included). Be it Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Thailand, Tibet, Bali, Japan. Love it all.

Comments ex Muslim living in Thailand. Many Muslims claimed that our country is the perfect example of how Islam has integrated successfully into society including the government and politics. But as an Indonesian the situation here is much different then some muslims claimed. It is prohibited here to criticize on anything that involves the religion of Islam, once you do you get persecuted and sent to jail (example would be Jakarta's governer Bapak Ahok or Basuki Purnama who got sentenced to prison because he stated the truth about Islam, and also because he is non-Muslim). Absolutely no freedom of speech or criticism when it comes to Islam here. Also, there are groups of Muslims here who wanted the Sharia Law to be integrated in Indonesia and their following is quite huge. Muslims here get special privileges and treatment that followers of other religions dont get. Example, they have mosques here all over Indonesia that produces a loud adzan everyday, and if we complain about it we will get attacked and persecuted (theres an actual real life case that just happened here) but some churches and temples here get bombed by Muslims. Some Muslims can also demand to close down churches / temples if the majority of the people in that area agrees (majority are Muslims usually so sometimes it happens). But you cant do the same in return. Muslims also use the blasphemy law to protect the interests of the Islamic religion from any criticism, even though there are many positive and constructive criticisms.
I admit there are good Muslims, but the Ex Islam expert says:
- Muslims are lazy to read and study the Qur'an correctly and thoroughly
- Islamic religious teachers hide teachings that make no sense and are against human rights
- study Islam conditionally Arabic language and Arabic culture. This requirement is more severe than entering Harvard University, which is having an English proficiency requirement called TOEFL.
- Because Indonesian Muslims are rarely able to read Arabic, irrational teachings, controversies, contradictions and violations of human rights are never known to good Muslims.
- The best Islamic learning is from ex Muslims.
The method of learning by rote, brainwashing and avoiding debate in the Islamic education system is a planned effort to make people believe in certain beliefs through manipulative ways. Memorizing and brainwashing kill critical attitudes, common sense and conscience. It breeds blind loyalty to a particular set of teachings or figures. You could say, brainwashing is the fastest way to produce a terrorist. It is a pity that education in Islamic primary and secondary institutions in Indonesia (madrasah and pesantren) for almost 10 years has used rote and brainwashing methods and avoided debate. Ten years of education includes Kindergarten (1 year), elementary school (6 years) and junior high school (3 years). The ILO organization forbids kids(kindergarten, elementary and junior high schools) to work for money, age & body is not yet possible, likewise if these children are forced to do "brain" forced labor to memorize thousands of verses of the Koran, this is also a violation of children's human rights! Has the Islamic education system as above resulted in the Islamic state being left behind in many fields?

About the "conversion" ritual, In Balinese Hindu there is Sudhi Wadani ritual, it's considered as "cleaning the self" ritual rather than conversion it's because the Balinese Hindu still believe in their ancestor or you can say there's still animism practice from the Balinese culture, so when someone wants to be a Balinese Hindu especially when someone non-hindu get married with someone from Balinese Hindu they'll need to be "cleaned" to join the "Family" in this case the ancestral lineage

@@aparnasingh9358 I am a balinese hindu, let me clear that up. Sudhi wadhani is all the process and steps of someone that doing the conversion to hinduism, and one of them is cleansing ritual. I don't know the exact process of it but im trying to summarize. First they need to be clean spiritualy, blessed with holy water or going to the sea just like indian going to ganges, and then through process of rituals as the person depicted to be born again as a new human. All the hindu rituals from baby to adult that she missed in her life have to be done. It's a very long rituals which took most of the time. And the latter she proceed to repeat some vedas passage and gayatri mantram.

As a Indonesia fillipino I've lived in indo for almost 12 yrs but my ancestors has been born they so once my grandfather told me that the very ancient Hindus scriptures,status,and many other things like the hindu temple very firstly build here in indonesia and we have actually even visited the temples near us and he also told that the 99% population then was hindu then they actually converted in which most ppl convert to Islam(80) and christianity(10%) or something like that k dont have that actual percentage but something near and in that we were also one our ancestor converted to christianity so yet my 40% is still Christians and others has reverted to Hinduism and in that 40% we are there so we wil also in near coming day goona revert bcos i found a peace.. in Hinduism there culture and all are so good tho i dont have much idea but i am trying to learn more and more.

As an Indian Hindu, it doesn't matter if she converted to my religion, the most important facet is that , she found peace and solace in Hinduism and her relatives support it, like some other Hindu might find vice-versa or so, like A.R Rahman did.
I pray for her health and safety and also hope that our Indonesian bros stay together, like we Indian Hindus and Muslims get together after any petty quarrels. I would urge the Indonesians irrespective of age, to hold their culture in high regard, use their languages as well, try your best to include the native scripts to print the Quran, the Geeta, the Bible and so on. The Balinese are the best Hindus that I have felt and the Javanese, the best muslims, because they know acculturation and let their culture prosper. You would usually hear abt Javanese people as high officials and so on, because of their ability to assimilate and respect all. All Hindus should take notes from the Balinese and the Muslims of my country, from the Javanese.

I am an Indonesian. Indonesian law allows the citizen to choose the belief they wish for however limited to certain religions only such Hindu, Buddhism and some well-known religion .
In case of Sukmawati she already practiced Hinduism for long time ago it is only the official acclamation to the public.
We mostly Indonesian don't resist her decision let alone her family support her.
After all may Sukmawati get happiness regardless the decision she chooses .

@@MrPoornakumar it's not right. Even Sikhs are not willing to identify them as basically Hindus or Vedantists. If they were they wouldn't hv to found & follow a new religion called Sikhi. They could hv remained in Sanatan Dharm only na? Many beliefs in Hinduism has been changed in Sikhi. eg: Omkar was changed to Ik Omkar, meaning one God. Sikhi never says abt 33 crore Gods but one god. They call God as Waheguru, it comes from Wahed guru which means one God. Wahed in Arabic,Urdu & Punjabi means one. Second, idolatry is prohibited in Sikhi just like how it's prohibited in Islam. Sikhi also doesn't let to participate in rituals or festivals of other religions, though many do so in the name of secularism but their book & teachings of Gurus don't let them. In Sikhi, there is also prohibition of alcohol though u can see many Sikhs consuming alcohol. So calling them basically Hindus, I mean the Hindus today, is just idiocy

Your misunderstanding lies in assuming Hinduism is monolithic like Christianity or Islam (like any other religion of Semitic origin). There is no central doctrine, one god or one book (& many more "ones"). Now Sanatana dharma (ancient way of life ) derives from Vedas, that 99.99% don't know a thing about. How can you call it 1 religion ? There are as many view points of which "Ekeswaropasana" (worshipping one god) is one. And who bundled these heterogenous worship methods into one?
The answer is "You", who came across the Sindh river who couldn't comprehend the thousand cults, creeds or worship methods. They called this land "Al Hind" (Hind standing for Sindh or the Greek Ind) & so the denizens of this land (Asetu Himachala paryantam - from the "Sethu" to the Himalayas) were "Hindus" with no religious connotation, save the Social setting. So how can you blame Hindus for your mistake in understanting? It is a way of life wherein all cults co-exist (unlike in Arabia).
Now to confront Islam, Hindus chose to attack with the same "standards" of a religion (Hinduism isn't one religion) adapting same attributes& same methods . It won't work. "Ekeswaropasana" ("Eko Brhma, sadviprah bahuda vadanti"=God or creator is one, good men call him by many names) is the essence of Upanishads.
Rebel religions arose form the "Hindu fold" . Buddhism was the most ancient while Sikhism (enunciated by Guru Nanakdev) is the latest. Mainly the supreme God (there are millions of Gods, but) is Nirguna (no attributes), Nirakara (formless), Niranta (with neither end nor beginning), Niramaya etc etc. Hence no idols. You can't expect a whole population to rise to the exalted standard of Upanishads.Everyone needs a personal god (of choice) easily accessible, to whom s/he can relate, to outpour his inner problems or anguishes. For that a form (Akara) is needed. Thus arose the idol cult, that employed a million people & raised it to an art form. As long as these different cults don't fight with each other, Social harmony is maintained & there is no need for a Prophet to intervene. This multi-faceted thing is seen by people like you, one facet at a time & interpreted so. This isn't justifiable. So change your view.

Hindu religion is basically based on "CASTE" which is what defines a person's identity in Hinduism. The so called 33 crore gods is a load of BS which was created by "Brahmins", the custodians of Hindu religion to keep the masses under their control. Even Buddhism, which is supposedly closer to "Hinduism" has only one God, "Buddha", Sikhism has one God. You need to ask yourself, why so may religions got a foothold in India over time if Hinduism was really so great. I agree with what all you said. There is no HINDUISM without CASTE.
However I want to clarify one point or rather what I understood. Bhagawan Buddha has been a Bhagawan (God) for us. It is (also) the tradition in this land to elevate or "deify" a person to Godhood (without affecting the notional existence of the Supreme God, or Paramatma). So were all the Gods in Indian religions. So was Buddha himself. While there can be much debate on Param`atma there can be no doubt about the existence of Buddha (& Rama or Krishna too, for that matter).
Yet, He (Buddha) never indulged in any talk on God, Heaven & all that. All these seeped into the pristine religion after he passed on into non-existence (Maha`parinirvana).You accuse me of long essays. I had to because I have to deal with imbeciles & to make my point clear. Religion (like a coin) has two facets (sides) to it - Spiritual & Societal or Social. All Indian religions take off in the direction of Spiritual, neglecting the Social aspect totally. Buddha himself was unduly emphatic on "Social" (Sangham). Same is the case with the Semitic religions, mostly.

Don't believe fake news about Bangladeshi Hindus. The community has grown to 17 million from 6 million since partition. You might hear once every 5 or 6 years about some local communal disturbance. Hindus in Bangladesh are very spread out so they don't have a province or a district where they can run everything in a Hindu way. But besides that I personally know a Muslim lady, my English teacher who converted to Hinduism.
