    Great video! It really does depend what the person is going to use it for. I got lucky to get my GH5 at the begging of the year for $750 on ebay (before tax & shipping) with v-log and a good SD card. I paired it with the Sigma 18-35, which I also bought at a good price on ebay before taxes and shipping for $460, and I couldn't be any happier. It's still an awesome video camera and hope to make great footage when the pandemic goes down.

      The GH5 sucks. I'm sorry but it's true. I've owned it for two years and it's autofocus is ridiculously bad. Hence the reason I'm going to sell off all my Panasonic gear and buy Sony full frame. Can't justify the A7siii and I love to shoot photo too so I'll buy the A7C and A7iii on a Black Friday deal.

    How do you think the GH5S with speed booster XL (effectively making it a 1.15 crop from full frame) would compare vs the newer A7S III? If adapted GH5S can possibly get similar look to a full frame camera, do you think the main differences the GH5S has is not having good AF and no 4k 120 FPS.

      GH5 also doesn’t do 10bit 4K60, A7S III does 4k60 and 4k120 in 10bit. So if having the most possible options for maximizing colors is important to you, that in itself will make the A7S III a HUGE upgrade. It was for me. But the main two things you just mentioned, good AF and 4k120 are plenty enough for me to make the upgrade. GH5S is still a great camera, it’s more about how you use it anyways, no matter the camera. Just my two cents :)

    Thank you for this very good video! What I don't really get is, why the depth of field of full frame would be more cinematic.
    Most cinema productions are still being shot on roughly aps-c sized sensors. With speedbooster + fast lens (like your f1.8 sigma) you are exactly where you would want to be to be "cinematic".
    There's nothing bad about liking the full frame look, of course :-)

    • @ConnorRickey
      @ConnorRickey  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, I mean if you get technical about it, I'm probably not using the word "cinematic" completely correct. I just mean I enjoy the look of footage coming out of FF cameras right now more. And so do my clients. I've had clients ask, "why isn't the background more blurry?" when shooting on the GH5, actually! Because remember, 1.8 on the GH5 is like 3.6 on a FF. So whenever I'm shooting 2.8 or wider on a FF the bokeh looks just incredible. All about your personal style and what your needs are :)

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ConnorRickey f/1.8 is kinda closer to f/2.5- f/2.8ish? I think. Unless you're using a normal adapter and not a speedbooster.
      But yeah... Sometimes clients just want everything blown out completely, although it might be overused these days.
      My local TV probably shoots everything on full frame with tele lenses at T2 or something, I can never tell where the characters are. It's a cheap way to skip set dressing I guess, but looks weird cos they do it 90% of the time now.

    Thank You Connor for your opinion of the GH5. I will be buying the Camera, which for me ticks all the boxes, as I am getting back to video and the GH5 offers everything I need for the market I am pointing at. Very grateful for your sharing your experience of the camera. I do think that LUMIX will be bringing out a GH6 or update that will overcome, but as you said, your issues are with the Micro 4/3rds sensor, low light as well as the depth of field issues in your want of bokeh. Hopefully there will be an improvement on the autofocus for run and gun uses, as well as VLogging.

    After getting a taste of full frame (using an A7Sii at work), I honestly can't wait to get a m43 or at most a new APS-C.
    God damn the weight of the full frame. I have to shoot solo, and running with a trinity + lights and a gimbal is killing my back.
    Bokeh is nice, but sometimes impractical. I shoot a few interviews here and there. f/2.8 is sometimes too shallow and I end up shooting f/4. Even f/6.3 for a group video.
    And bokeh also depends on distance of subject from sensor and background too, so sensor size... not the biggest factor. The environment you're shooting in is more important imo.

    GH5 reliability is definitely something that's appealing. I just picked up an XT4 for the sole reason I can use EF glass seamlessly even in photos, whereas the GH5 can't really shoot photos with adapted lenses. However, oh boy does the XT4 overheat. Considering saving up for a Ninja V, or selling it for a GH5.

    • @LaurenceLee
      @LaurenceLee 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So happy I just saw this comment. I just spent 2 days looking at the xt4 but eventually talked myself out of it. I have a 90d and am thinking of just keeping that as my hybrid shooter and getting a gh5 as main video cam. Either that or save up for a bmpcc 😅

    • @professionalpotato4764
      @professionalpotato4764 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LaurenceLee Yeah, if you intend to shoot like for several hours at a time, GH5 is the way to go. I'm still kinda on the fence whether to switch, since XT4 has internal 10 bit 4k60 so it's much better for minimal rigging without a Ninja V for quick shoots and getting unnoticed in public. Then again, GH5 IBIS beats Fuji hands down for handheld shooting. The jerkiness of XT4 IBIS forces me to turn it off in some situations.
      Shooting in 1080p 120 helps with the heat issues more or less. (It can still overheat though)
      After trying out 10 bit, I can't go back to 8 bit codecs anymore D:
      Maybe if the GH6 comes with internal 10 bit for 4k60 I'll switch.
      Since you have a solid photo camera already, I think the GH5 would suit you better. BMPCC is rather expensive once you factor in the full rig, and storage, and workflow. I want to use raw video one day, but for now it's too expensive in terms of time and money personally.

    • @LaurenceLee
      @LaurenceLee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I would argue that the G9 is even better because it is a little bit cheaper and it has the same amazing quality of video (4k 10bit 422) and slow motion (4k 60fps, 1080p 180fps) and better photo features. and as for the stuff you want like DOF, better Low light I think the S5 is the best option for the price, and a more video oriented cinema camera is an option too (BMPCC6K, ZCam E2 S6, Etc.)

    Cons: Lack of DOF bokeh? Come on dude really. I have a vintage Olympus 50 f1.4 lens w/a Metabones SB on GH5 that gets insane bokeh. Just saying. ...GREAT VIDEO. NICE JOB! and
    THANKS for cheat sheet. Appreciated.

      Right. Only works well if you’re willing to use primes. For me, primes aren’t practical for the style of shooting I do. On a FF camera, at 2.8, it’s like I’m shooting 1.4 on the gh5. There are no 1.4 zoom lenses available for the gh5. So for me, that’s limiting. Glad you enjoyed! 👌

      @@ConnorRickey Yup, it comes down to
      how, what, and your style of shooting. I manual focus 90%, and prefer the look of vintage prime glass. They have more of an art/filmic quality than some digital/surgical (rendering) glass. IMO. I also picked up a Sony A7 just to have a FF option. Thanks again for your time making this video.

    honestly adapting lenses could solve the bokeh issue for example get the meike 12mm t2.2 for canon throw on a metabones id bet you have a pretty good wide bokeh filled look..also I think the gh5s could provide some more depth of field than the gh5

    • @ConnorRickey
      @ConnorRickey  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well sure - but to get decent bokeh I’d have to shoot with primes which limits a lot of things for me. If I can shoot with a 24-70 2.8 on a FF I’d prefer that any day. Just a personal choice! Also - the GH5s is still m43 so I don’t think it offers any more bokeh. Low light? Yes. But bokeh? I don’t think so. Thanks for watching!

      @@ConnorRickey it does because the field of view is a bit larger. So getting the same framing as another m43 camera you'd have to move closer. In theory it would provide a little more its a 1.8 crop

    Micro 4/3 cutting the depth of field in half e.g (f2 is f4) is misinformation that keeps being passed around

    • @ConnorRickey
      @ConnorRickey  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      F/2 on micro 4/3 is just like f/4 on full frame. So a f/2 on full frame has much shallower depth of field than the micro 4/3. Where’s the misinformation?

      @@ConnorRickey from my understanding thats not true.. there are some videos on here that go into detail on it.. the aperture of the lens is unrelated to the sensor. www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/amp/photography/tips-and-solutions/depth-field-part-3
