Yeah man ...still got it!! I do have an S5 here, but still waiting for batteries to take it out for a spin. Great to meet another GH5 fan, one that's not following the hype and trend but really looking into the gear, its usability and your needs. Keep it up!
I have a BMPCC4K and I decided to get a GH5 MARK 2 because I have 4 Lumix lenses and will get the fifth one! I was going to get the Panasonic camcorder CX10 for Run'n'Gun filming and on-the-go content creation something easy, fast, and very high professional quality output but then I decided to switch to the GH5 after watching many filmmakers raving about it including your video! Thanks for your input, it has been a great help in my decision. Best
I bought a secondhand G9 halfway through 2020 after using a GH4 as my workhorse for the past five years. Most of my work is for online consumption and is edited in 1080p, with the occasional call for TVC or (rarely) theatrical content, so 4k and the G9 (and by extension GH5) is more than enough for what I'm making. For extra shallow depth of field there are the primes from Voigtlander and Olympus, as well as full frame lenses with a Speedbooster XL. ISO 3200 is usable on the G9 with a touch of NR. And in order to get full frame 4k 50p with no crop, you'd need to pay a lot more money. Only the Sony A7S III shoots full sensor width 4k 50p, and the Canon R6 crops very slightly. The Canon C70 does aps-c 4k 50p and 120p, but that's a ton of money. G9 and GH5(S) are future proof and extremely good value for a lot of video creators. The only place where the G9 and GH5 are lesser are in raw output and dynamic range. The Olympus E-M1 III outputs to Prores Raw, and the Blackmagic Pockets have their own raw codec. The Sony A7 series cameras have pretty decent dynamic range in S-log. Depending on whether you shoot in controlled conditions or in situations requiring a lot of dynamic range, you might want to look elsewhere.
Great writeup! Totally agree with this - sure the Dynamic Range might not be the best when compared to s-log or ProRes Raw I agree with that. Thanks for taking the time to share. Cheers!
Every time I get down about my camera, I find myself on your channel. Ha! Just starting with shooting video and I love it! Would love to see more videos on getting more clients, etc. and hope you end up going in that direction. Thank you for all that you do.
I can definitely show more of that! Its what I am most interested in, the business side of it and ACTUALLY shooting films haha. I have a big one coming up that I will try to document
I also just bought a new one in late 2020 after considering the BMPCC 6K, XT-4, or Canons. Already have a G7 and a couple m43 lenses, plus a decent group of EF lenses to adapt in. Also shoot Fuji (XT-2) but wanted something more video centric and extremely pleased with the GH5. It honestly matches or exceeds specs and usability of nearly every new camera released through 2020!
@@ryanjharris haha referring to the entry level Panasonic body from 6+ years ago, picked it up as a backup 4k video cam for $500 in like 2016. Tremendous value but I was shocked at how much better the GH5 is from a build & usability standpoint
@@ryanjharris Yes bit by bit. Alongside the Canon 80D and Canon 90D and Nikon D5600, Nikon D750 Nikon D780 and Nikon Z5 for my street photography and maybe some portrait street photography. I currently own the Nikon D5500. The Fuji XT4 later on down the line. Mainly going to be open boxed purchases or really good used purchases. So over the four coming years the prices will be reasonable. Pricing should be 1,400 UK pounds downwards.
Fellow GH5 lover here. I own cinema cameras too, but 90% of the time the GH5 is the camera I grab and go. Every time I think of using the bigger cameras to get (maybe) better quality, I think of the hassle of carrying a monopod, a gimbal, tripod etc and forget the idea.... plus I find it much easier to manually pull focus during a handheld movement on the GH5, whereas with other cameras I'm either struggling to hold it steady enough or hoping the autofocus does what I want it to do (and I'm talking about Canon and Sony here)... and it usually doesn't. Then there's the fully customisable buttons and preset memories... no other camera comes close. As an example, I have a button that toggles between V-LOG and natural picture profiles so when the scene changes to a high contrast one I can quickly swap to V-Log in a second. I have another set to engage IS LOCK, so I can quickly switch to static and moving shots and get beautifully smooth movements or rock steady locked off shots instantly. I sound a bit crazy with my love for the GH5, but as long as you have good lenses with decent manual focus control (The Olympus Pro f1.2 lenses are unbeatable) I think its still the best tool available for a one-man production, and I think many film makers don't know what they're missing out on. In all honesty, I will still bring out my cinema camera if I have a crew working with me, but 90% of the time I'm on my own. And for the that the GH5 remains my baby and has served me so well I don't think I could ever bear to part with it.
I love my gh5 and have been using it for about 3 years. The only only only thing that bothers me about it is of course the autofocus. I usually do manual focus but there are definitely a few scenarios where solid autofocus would make my life so much easier
Went nuts last month, bought GH5, G9 and S5 FF to replace my FZ1000, FZ2500 and GX8. Loving the 10bit 4:2:2 workflow and the footage I am getting from these cameras. Also loving marrying some boutique legacy glass, fav being the sweet Takamur 50mm f1.4 🍷
I’m a true newbie and after watching so many TH-cam vids for a while, I knew that if I were going to spend a couple grand on a camera, it would have to be the GH5. I bought it a week or so ago. Haven’t done anything with it yet cause I’m doing a lot of research to learn how to use it. But yes, for the money, it’s the best value out there. Even now, early 2021, it has more than so many other cameras for sale, even many new ones for twice the price. I’ll bet the GH6 is gonna be something special.
VERY nice video as always Ryan - I Purchased you master class. I have been looking at getting an Sony A1 and going all in Sony since low light and AF on my beloved GH5 is not the best. Once again your video just now is making me have a rethink. Whether I stay with GH5 or head to Sony GH5 will forever be an amazing camera no doubt. Thanks for the video, enjoy watching them.
Probably more than five years. I have run across photographers that are still using 5D MK II’s and III’s. The GH5 has more technology than most people even know what to do with. There will always be technological advancements, but some people might not need them, or can use them. Sure, 8K is the new fad, but how many people have the hardware to edit it, or the storage capacity to deal with it. Let alone the ability to view it. Keeping up with the Jones’s gets expensive... . ..
Already have a GH5, thinking in buy a new camera, waiting for the GH6? Naaah I’m after a new GH5! You can bet!! Thanks bro! Always a pleasure to watch your videos.
Crazy how they hold their value. I used KEH to sell our t6i and noticed GH5s are hard to come by! I think we are going to go new dji pocket 2... simple run + gun.
GH5 is still the main video camera for us! Other camera systems are alluring right now, but the GH5 is sticking around. Knowing this camera inside and out, and being able to count on this small little rig in the worst type of conditions to capture the moments we need to capture is what keeps us from switching. Looking forward to seeing what kind of wizardry Panasonic does with the GH6 though! :P
Thanks Ryan. I was wavering between finally upgrading from my GH4 to a GH5 or a BMPC4K since I have a gazillion MFT lenses. I'm inspired to stick with th GH!!!
I too have two GH5’s, but I shoot events. I have no problems with this camera. I’d like to add another camera to my kit. Sometimes I think that I should get something better or something cheaper.
I've had a T3i, G7, G85, a7 III, and now the a7S III, but I swear I'd be lying if I said I still didn't want a GH5 in my collection. There's just something about it!
@@ryanjharris oh and today I just ordered a used Tokina 11-16. I hadn’t considered it before but I bought the Viltrox EF M2-2 last year (together with a Sigma 18-35)
I use Sony a7iii and I was thinking of getting Atomos ninja v as my monitor just for the fact that I can shoot over 30 minutes but this video has made me change my mind. I will rather get Gh 5, a versatile lens and probably a feelworld monitor. Thank you for this video.
@@ryanjharris looking forward to it. Honestly I feel like they complement each other a lot but i don’t know if it fully feels the same when using it next to the gh5 as i haven’t used it yet.
Regarding the last 15 seconds Ryan, consider talking about the business/marketing side of filmmaking, could be really interesting for most of us. Congrats on your new GH5, I'd do the same if mine broke or something 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
This is great! Just as I love my trusty GH4 even though its touchscreen never worked at all, it works great for me! My nest step will be a GH5! (I love the BGH1 but I prefer the GH5) Congratulations on staying cool with another GH5!
Once one has been spoilt with the video features of the GH5 and have built ones kit, it is hard to give it up for the present hybrid offerings available. I shall only be complimenting by GH5 system with FF not replacing it! in fact, if the GH6 comes soon, I might just keep my FF lenses and not bother with a FF body and use the saved money to buy a set of those beautiful Oly pro 1.2 primes!😃🙏🏾
My first GH5 is pretty close to the end of it’s life, I’m just hoping it doesn’t die before a Gh6 is announced. I already have a second Gh5, Don’t want to buy a third this close to the end of the product lifecycle
Love my GH5 and I’m three years in. Last year I bought a G9 as a backup and was soooooo disappointed. F&cking hate it. Now I’m thinking about getting another GH5 or GH5s. For my work doing real estate videos an A7siii would absolutely produce a better image and speed up my workflow but it’s like $9000+ to switch brands and replace all my Oly glass. Nope. I’ll take the time waiting on Neat Video to clean up my low light shots thank you very much. :).
@@ryanjharris alas, faster glass won’t help me because I need a deeper depth of field on most shots. My only real complaint with the camera is that I’m stuck using 8 bit when I shoot with variable frame rate and that’s 100% of the time because I shoot everything in 120 p. I’m getting very tired of moire effect showing up in my clips when I’m dealing with a scene that has a texture the 8 bit just can’t handle.
Ryan, it's good to see the love you have for the GH5, I've had mine for a while now, with a VILTROX EF-M2II adapter + a Sigma Art 18-35 mm, I love this setup, but the AUTO FOCUS is the great weak point of this equipment... Do you always work with manual focus? How do you go about moving around with the camera and keeping everything in focus? I know the peaking tool, but it is not always easy to visualize. Could you do a tutorial on this topic or do you have any Tip to share? I want to learn to focus well while moving to get the shots I want. Thank you!
good stuff. I have been using the GH5 for last 3 years and actually been thinking of getting into a FF camera (eyeballing Sony a7s3) I could use better low light and auto focus for what I do. The Gh5 has been good though for most everything. (lenses: Pany 12-35 2.8, 35-100 2.8) I have held off buying new faster glass which would help the Low light but still will struggle with auto focus. hmm....
awesome man.. I plan on getting a gh5s and a gh5 soon after I shoot with a g9 but want a a b c cam. and for a personal cam I am actually thinking of a gx8
@@ryanjharris ya its weird how there isnt much on it and it was never very popular... in my opinion its one of panasonics best designs especially for travel and vlog.. 20 mp sensor smaller body like a gx85 or 9 but with a larger grip and flip around screen and weather sealed.. of course it has its stupid things like the mic jack is a weird mm need an adaptor and no stabilization in 4k. nto sure if it has touch screen but you can get one around 4-500 good condition..imo a great cam to be out and about with
I love to watch footage of the GH5 but also from S5 these days. For a first camera purchase which of those two would you recommend? Keep the great content coming :)
@@ryanjharris thanks! If I may add a question: What’s is the most important feature on the GH5 for you as filmmaker that the S5 does not have? Cheers :)
Good video, im glad you got a new one. I have never used a camera, only action camera and my drone. Is the GH5 a good beginner camera, im thinking at starting to do some short films and some vlogging and I will take it with my out in nature. Is this a good camera for that.
I am working on a full comparison of GH5 vs S5 and will release it soon! I think for low light S5 is looking great BUT it depends on your finances. I wouldn't stretch too far to get the S5. I will add more details soon!
Ryan, thanks for confirming my GH5 decision two years back. Mine isn’t weathered yet, but I’m thinking about a second camera to do multiple angles in documentaries. I think it should be another GH5... what do you think?
That's essentially what I did. I see no issue with the GH5 outputting amazing HQ films for my clients for at least the next 3 years so personally, I think it is worth it! Let me know what you think
Hey man, thanks for the vid. I am considering getting one of these, but I am concerned about the autofocus (which as I research) seems to be/have been an issue or a con with this camera when shooting moving shots on the move. I sometimes film dancers and I need to be able to trust the cameras AF function when moving with them. What's your opinon on this? TIA!
I was thinking about an upgrade but bought the metabones ultra and sigma 18-35 combo instead. It’s more than enough for social media, documentary style films and promos. I’m interested to know what system settings you guys shoot 4K 60fps in? NTSC or Cinema?
I was thinking about switching until I saw this video! I think it's because I don't know enough about it to be comfortable with it. Obe issue I am having right now is the GH5 isn't saving any new settings. When I turn the camera off it reverts back to my previous settings. If you or anyone in the comments have some advice I'd love to hear them. Thank you.
Hi there. Love your work. I have a sony a6400 but its really shakey and instead of getting a gimbal I am looking at switching to a gh5 as id like to shoot more run and gun style and not get told off too much by the wife. I worry about the gh5 auto focus though. Your videos look awesome so I guess I shouldnt worry. Would the gh5 still be ok at taking wildlife photos or actions photos aswell? Would really appreciate your advice. Cheers
Have you looked into the red komodo ryan? I've thought about upgrading to that eventually. Since it's apparently good for traveling. For now still rocking the gh5 though
Why not get the s5 it's smaller than gh5, 4k60,6k HDMI out, better in low-light, better autofocus, better in photo, only 2k with kit lens, gh5 was 2k body only during it's first release

Yeah man ...still got it!! I do have an S5 here, but still waiting for batteries to take it out for a spin. Great to meet another GH5 fan, one that's not following the hype and trend but really looking into the gear, its usability and your needs. Keep it up!
Cheers Kevin - Enjoy the S5 its pretty amazing also
I have a BMPCC4K and I decided to get a GH5 MARK 2 because I have 4 Lumix lenses and will get the fifth one! Best
sweeet video, just picked up the Gh5 late last year - great piece of gear. Shooting a lot with it right now :)
Glad to hear it man, enjoy
Right now I'm considering buying a Panasonic Lumix gh5. thank you for the video, it was very helpful to me.
Good choice! Cheers!
@@ryanjharris hell yeah! I look forward to it and continuing to follow your story.
@@tonythompson9709 Thanks!
Glad to hear it! G7 looks pretty awesome
@@ryanjharris haha referring to the entry level Panasonic body from 6+ years ago, picked it up as a backup 4k video cam for $500 in like 2016. Tremendous value but I was shocked at how much better the GH5 is from a build & usability standpoint
I've been using my gh5 for 2 years now and I'll switch it only to gh6, nothing else
Haha, we are holding... GH6 or bust!
What about s5
we gotta a fan boi
@@kris4637 It's a great option but I'll need some lenses for full frame and they are a little bit pricy, especially in Russia, where I'm from.
Excellent Ryan. The Panasonic Gh5, Gh5s and Panasonic S5 and Panasonic S1 are on my four year plan camera purchasing list.
Love it! You're going to buy all 4 of them?? Thats a lot of cameras haha
I have a GH5 and a Canon R6, and for real i use much more the GH5, i am just in love with this camera. Soooo easy to use and i just can't stop.
maybe a future video could be how you landed your most successful clients?
Sounds good man! Will work on that
I mean theres one video where he talks about how he got into working for Red Bull, quite funny how that came to be.
Every time you post you give me inspiration man 👌
Cheers man, thanks for watching
I’m stalling, waiting for the mythical gh6!
HOLLLLLDDDDD. It'll come one day haha
Thank you! I appreciate the kind words
Do everything you said you want to do at the end bro and we'll be right here to watch ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾. I have a 2nd Panasonic G9 for the same reason lol
Thanks Adam, really appreciate that! Haha the G9 looks sweet also
To be honest, the GH5 is going to be enough for most people for another 5 years!
I don’t plan to upgrade anytime soon, that’s for sure!
GH5 2026!! Lets gooo
Yes totally agree, about to get my second.
Wooh!
Crazy how they hold their value. I used KEH to sell our t6i and noticed GH5s are hard to come by! I think we are going to go new dji pocket 2... simple run + gun.
I've heard good things about the Pocket II. Good call!
Just never shot enough with the t6i. Pocket size, no excuses!
EXACTLY how I feel. I am stoked for the GH6 also but not holding my breath... Just trying to focus on what I have for now. Cheers man!!
Too congratulations man! I hope I will get one in the future when I will be able to afford it
It’s the one camera I refuse to sell.
Same here
Thanks Ryan. I was wavering between finally upgrading from my GH4 to a GH5 or a BMPC4K since I have a gazillion MFT lenses. I'm inspired to stick with th GH!!!
Nice man! Glad to hear it!
I too have two GH5’s, but I shoot events. I have no problems with this camera. I’d like to add another camera to my kit. Sometimes I think that I should get something better or something cheaper.
Don't forget (cuz most reviewers do) the high bitrate as high as 400 mbps for really detailed amazing capture of images
Thanks for staying loyal to the Gang!!! GH6 cometh
Hahah, cheers David. GH5 till 2040.. haha
Yeah...to all the faithfuls that waited on gh4 to see gh5, Gh6 is coming and it will be epic
What about the eye autofocus? That was the reason for me ti switch to the canon EOS R
I've had a T3i, G7, G85, a7 III, and now the a7S III, but I swear I'd be lying if I said I still didn't want a GH5 in my collection. There's just something about it!
I still use my GH5 and sold my GH4 to (50%) fund a G9 which is my primary stills camera!
Nice!
@@ryanjharris oh and today I just ordered a used Tokina 11-16. I hadn’t considered it before but I bought the Viltrox EF M2-2 last year (together with a Sigma 18-35)
I still have might and it still runs like it brand new and never let me down.
Hell ya!
watching your videos wants to make me go into filming stuff and use the gh5.
Glad to hear it!
Make sure you also use a battery grip to extend battery 😀
Ouuu haven't tried one yet to be honest..
I use Sony a7iii and I was thinking of getting Atomos ninja v as my monitor just for the fact that I can shoot over 30 minutes but this video has made me change my mind. I will rather get Gh 5, a versatile lens and probably a feelworld monitor. Thank you for this video.
Awesome! Keep on creating
Much appreciated, Ryan.
I’m still on GH5 and EOS R for now. 🙂
Great combo! Good call
I still have my GH5 and is a BEAST of a camera, I love it.....
I love my gh5 I’ve been thinking about getting an s5 as my second camera.
I have an S5 also, I will do a full comparison video soon!
Thanks! I will start posting longer videos on those topics :) Cheers
Just got used gh5 from eBay. Beste choice ever. But i'm still looking out for an wide fisheye lens especially for filming skateboarding.
i love my gh5 and gh5s!!! power duo!
Great setup! Nice mate
Adding one to my S1H soon! Legendary camera
Epic! Enjoy mate
I love my GH5. I shoot all my videos in VLog and cant think about changing it.
This is great! Just as I love my trusty GH4 even though its touchscreen never worked at all, it works great for me! My nest step will be a GH5! (I love the BGH1 but I prefer the GH5) Congratulations on staying cool with another GH5!
Haha, yes the GH4 upgrade to the GH5 is a big difference! Excited for you
Once one has been spoilt with the video features of the GH5 and have built ones kit, it is hard to give it up for the present hybrid offerings available. I shall only be complimenting by GH5 system with FF not replacing it! in fact, if the GH6 comes soon, I might just keep my FF lenses and not bother with a FF body and use the saved money to buy a set of those beautiful Oly pro 1.2 primes!😃🙏🏾
Nice !!, the GH5 is a run & gun beast. I still love mine.
Helll ya mate!
Hopefully here at CP+ they’ll announce a GH6... I hope!
My first GH5 is pretty close to the end of it’s life, I’m just hoping it doesn’t die before a Gh6 is announced. I already have a second Gh5, Don’t want to buy a third this close to the end of the product lifecycle
Totally get that. #preyforgh6
Totally agree Dylan. Better to get faster glass then a A7siii I think :)
Thank you!
I do only use manual - here is a full tutorial I just put out: th-cam.com/video/D27b4IKkaLM/w-d-xo.html
Longer tutorials in my workshop: workshop.ryanjharris.ca/courses/ryanharris
@@ryanjharris Thanks!
Nice! I don't know much about the GX8 what's the appeal?
I would recommend the GH5 for a FILMMAKER. If you are 50/50 photography and video then maybe the S5. Cheers!
@@ryanjharris thanks! If I may add a question: What’s is the most important feature on the GH5 for you as filmmaker that the S5 does not have? Cheers :)
GH5 FTW!
Ya buddyyyyy!!
Been a Pani boy for as long as I could remember. G3, G85, GH4 now the GH5. Best investment of 2020.
There is a lot to like about MFT and GH5 especially.
Good video, im glad you got a new one. I have never used a camera, only action camera and my drone. Is the GH5 a good beginner camera, im thinking at starting to do some short films and some vlogging and I will take it with my out in nature. Is this a good camera for that.
Love the GH5...been looking into the S5 as a back up, especially for low light situations...what is your thought on the S5 over the GH5?
I am working on a full comparison of GH5 vs S5 and will release it soon! I think for low light S5 is looking great BUT it depends on your finances. I wouldn't stretch too far to get the S5. I will add more details soon!
@@ryanjharris looking forward to it! Thanks man!
GH5 gang baby 💥
Lets goooo!
I still love and thinkin' to get a new GH5 too!
DOOOO IT!
@@ryanjharris 🙌
Were you saying the GH4 doesn't shoot 4K or that it's not 4K 60fps? I shoot 4k all the time and I know it doesn't shoot 60fps..just checking
oh yea! love my GH5!
Hell ya
bought 1dx3 last year but still keep and prefer using GH5 for most video works...
Hell ya mate!
TIA!
Amazing review and content 🙏
Thank you 🙌
Love my GH5.
Hell ya!
Oh nope! Not yet, what is that?
@@ryanjharris Reds new cinema travel camera for $6k. My friends have 1 and they say it's amazing for travel and for the RAW codec.
USD 6k?? We're talking about another league, probably better but most definitely way out of the price range.
@@androstern yeah but it's a cinema camera with raw codec.
Why not get the s5 it's smaller than gh5, 4k60,6k HDMI out, better in low-light, better autofocus, better in photo, only 2k with kit lens, gh5 was 2k body only during it's first release
I have the S5 also but might sell it. I will do a full comparison video soon!
What do you think about the gh5 photography side? I'm planning to purchase gh5 for all around video and photo what do you think
Ryan what do you think about GH5s, as I'm sure you checked it too, before to buy GH5 second time?
How are coping with low light ?

All you need is to learn camera limits and work around them, faster lenses, better editing, better angles
Buy some lights
