Mexica - How to Play 🎲 and Why It's a Gem 💎

  • This older board game gem is Mexica, designed by Kiesling & Kramer and originally published by Ravensburger in 2002. Players are building the Aztec island city of Tenochtitlan, and build canals to section off districts and build temples of various sizes to score points for them! The final game of the "Mask Trilogy" , and arguably the most developed, it recently got a great updated edition from French publisher Super Meeple.

    15:44 Why It's a Gem 💎
    Board Gems highlights board and card games that aren't talked about much any more - maybe they're a bit old (though not usually crazy old), or maybe they didn't make a big splash when they came out - but are still great games today, and deserve to not be forgotten!
    (Mexica arguably doesn't qualify, but it's been requested.)

    Why are Canadians so good at explaining games? I feel like I’m learning painting from Bob Ross; a totally chill and positive experience...

      Thanks! That's the second time in a week someone compared me to Bob Ross. I'll take it as a compliment... and it may explain why my family can't stop yawning when I teach them a new game... 🙂

      @@BoardGems Well, I'll say this: people often learn and comprehend things differently and at different speeds. I'm one that needs to take some extra time to understand things. I sometimes have to stop and rewind instructional playthroughs several times in places. Not with your runthrough, though. It was right at my speed. For quick learners they might feel differently, I guess.

    In my opinion Mexica is the best family game out there, I added cubes, so the players can count their six actions, so it flows in a better way.

    We have different tastes, but I could hear you talk about games for days. I also value interactivity a lot, but despite thinking simplicity is a virtue in design I am willing to sacrifice it more than you, I think. I played both Mexica and Torres, and despite enjoying my time, I would never pick them of the shelf proactively. Two of my favorite games are Brass and Barrage, which I think would not be too much on your wheelhouse.
    Btw: I played Mexica once, and like a grinch I did hoard the tokens, explicitly to deny other players, and won :)

    Yeah, amazing game. The new edition looks so amazing on the table. Cuzco by the same designers stimulates my brain even more.

    Glad to see you covering this one! I haven't played any of the 'mask' games, but I like the design team. I believe consensus dictates Mexica the tightest and least AP-prone, and Tikal the most satisfying. I just can't help myself: Cuzco appeals to me more.

      I can understand, considering you were inquiring about Taluva before! The 3D aspect is quite appealing. Even though Mexica's gameplay isn't 3D, it still has a very cool 3D effect with the temples.

    I was so happy to find someone selling this (still in shrink too) near me. Picked it up today. Hoping to get it on the table.
    Also, just found this channel and I wanted to say, although I haven't been to Pizzeria Ludica since I moved out to Langley, it's great.

      Thanks for the kind words regarding Ludica! Hopefully we'll still see you once in a while, maybe at the New Westminster location.
      I hope you like Mexica! Naw, I'm sure you will. It's great.

    Tikal is one my favorite game. Mostly for nostalgic reason since it was one the first game I bought and I was blown away by it. I played Mexica only once or twice, much later. My feeling was "great game, but I prefer Tikal" (and the same happened for Java/Cuzco). Maybe the order in which you get them influence your feeling, since it's true there are similarities. And thanks a lot to Super Meeple for the new editions of these games. I thought the original editions were already very nice, but the new editions are really great.
    So, I kind of feel the same as you : I have one of the game of the mask trilogy, don't really need the others. I think the game is really a gem. Except, in my case it's Tikal and in your case it's Mexica :-)

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You might be right! Though I played both a long time ago so I don't think it's nostalgia. 🙂 In my case, I love that Mexica has fewer action points per turn and it's possible to save some for future turns. Even though it's a thinky game, with no randomness except for initial setup, it's not as prone to analaysis paralysis. Just my preference! Thanks for your comment!

      I have the new version of Tikal, but I love the banking option. I might just add that to bring down the AP in Tikal. Ii love the look of Mexica.

    I love Mexica! When this edition came out, I paid retail for it and have never regretted that purchase because the game is so phenomenal. I generally don't like take that...this is the take that game for those that don't like the surprise of that mechanic but love the idea that if you don't pay attention : you could be bested. They are never game breaking and will always make you laugh even when it negatively affects you. This is a poster child for rock solid design.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Right. I don't really even consider it as take-that. You aren't tearing people down... but you are spying opportunities to get in where someone else is. It can certainly be a very competitive game! And I 100% agree on how solid the design is.

    This is hard to find now! Have you tried Renature? If yes, how do you think it compares to Mexica? Thanks

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I have. There are some similarities in the area-majority aspect, though actually Renature is a bit meaner because ties cancel out like in Las Vegas and Big Shot. It's personal preference, but I don't prefer Renature. The main gameplay is quite restricted, but you can break those restrictions by spending cloud tokens. I prefer the fewer restrictions, the more open-ended gameplay, of Mexica. But that's me. Renature is a very cool newer OG-style game that fans of the genre should definitely look at!

    I have only played Cuzco. It was fine but it felt like an abstract puzzle. Not so much my jam but I still had a good time. I don’t know if I need to play it again or any of the others in the trilogy just because I felt meh about Cuzco.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's interesting. I haven't played Cuzco but it seems the most gamer-y of the trilogy. If you don't like the AP of Cuzco (in both senses of the term), you probably won't like others in the trilogy either. I don't care too much for Torres (a related game, and also quite gamer-y) but still really like Mexica, so your mileage may vary.

    • @BGMechanics
      @BGMechanics 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BoardGems yeah. I don’t mind the AP (on both fronts) just seems these aren’t my style. That is fine. I have lots of games on my shelves that I love and I will keep watching your vids to try to find some more great older games to play.

    Is there any rules different in the old one ?
    I got the one from Rio grande games 😊

      Not that I recall! The old edition is great too. Just the box is a bit big. 🙂
