Medici vs Strozzi - How to Play 🎲 and Why It's a Gem 💎

  • This week's older board game gem is Medici vs Strozzi, a Rio Grande/Abacus 2006 two-player spinoff of Reiner Knizia's evergreen classic Medici. Like Medici, players draw goods and bid on them, hoping to make valuable shipments and improve their market share. One player bids, the other player may buy it at that price - but if they decline, the auctioneer MUST buy it at the set price. Lots of factors go into valuation, including value, makeup, size and even just being sure you're the auctioneer the next time. It's a cutthroat, highly competitive, but simple to learn game.

Board Gems is a weekly video series highlighting board games that aren't talked about much any more - maybe they're a bit old (though not usually crazy old), or maybe they didn't make a big splash when they came out - but are still great games today, and deserve to not be forgotten!

Man, you put in your videos lots of very interesting points of view. Not many content creators do it this good, not even the most popular ones.
For me, this stuff is highly informative, your opinions are very well explained and motivated. I will check all your videos.
It's also cool that you appreciate the older designs. They were great and still are.
Good luck with your channel !

Just picked this up in a math trade. Looking forward to getting it to the table. Thanks for the great review.

Medici doesn’t play well at 2 even with the Grail version longer boats. I played it with my partner to get the rules under my belt before hosting a remote 5-player session during lockdown. Medici is so amazing at 5 or preferably 6, but with 3 or 4 I’ll choose Ra or High Society.
Thanks for shining a light on MvS. I often break this out on unsuspecting newbies and they can’t believe how vicious it is. They don’t make them like this anymore!

Agreed :-) I feel this game is so much under the radar. The fact that you love this game shows me that you are also in the "Intellectual challenge" category of gamers. An "In it for the experience" gamer would dislike this game. Maybe you are abit 60/40? 60 for the experience? Or maybe closer to 50/50... which is rather rare.

I've never thought of it like that. I'm always looking for a great experience, whether it's an intellectual challenge or just the laughs. My favourite game is Ave Caesar, which is not an intellectual game at all! Besides, the "intellectual experience" is what a lot of modern euros provide, and I don't care for them at all due to unnecessary (to me) complexity that detracts from the experience. This game is a challenge, not bogged down by a complex ruleset.

@@BoardGems I wrote the wrong word.. I call it "In it for the intellectual challenge".
Everybody is playing games to get a nice experience. However, when a person is in for the intellectual challenge... that is something quite different than playing a thematic role playing game. These people are "in it for the experience".
A statement like "love to solve brain puzzles" usually comes from a person who are in it for the intellectual challenge.
It is possible to be 50/50, but I believe these people are rare.

Well I do like to solve brain puzzles! I used to have a subscription to nikoli.jp to do lots of great Japanese puzzles. That's one reason I don't like solo gaming; I'd rather just do a puzzle, less set up time. 🙂
