Horrified & Alien - Rough Cuts 🪨
มุมมอง 48614 วันที่ผ่านมา
This is a return of Rough Cuts, a format in which I just chat about a couple of similar games I've played recently. Here, I've played two light cooperative games from Ravensburger licensed from horror film franchises: Horrified (by Prospero Hall, based on the Universal Film monsters) and Alien: Fate of the Nostromo (designed by Scott Rogers, based on the 1979 Ridley Scott film). Unusual for me,...
Royal Visit AKA Times Square - Side-by-Side Comparison 👥

When a new(ish) version of an older Reiner Knizia board game comes out, it's always worth a look. This video compares the original Kosmos two-player game Times Square (2006) with the newer Iello version called Royal Visit (2021). There's not many components to the game, so it's a super-short video. I, uh... I don't like this game. I've given it lots of chances and it fails every single time. It...

    Me and my partner play this with a variation were you dont have to play the drawn tile and can store it for yourselve at the penality of missing your turn. This opens up playing more favourable tiles later which results in higher scores and a more visually pleasing board which are both fun. Also we do trading of tiles if agreed by both players

    I’ve played Tsuro and it was fine, but there seems to be a little more going on in these 2 games. I think i’m leaning towards picking up Cable Car over Metro. Any thoughts?

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems 6 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'd agree with that. Tsuro is a filler, and so has its place as a super-quick game. Metro is a longer game, but still the base game is quite light. For modern hobbyists I suspect base Metro isn't enough, so you'd want one that came with at least an expansion. That's: Cable Car 2009, Metro 2017, and Metro: City Edition 2024. I happen to like the company expansion which unfortunately retail City edition doesn't have. Of the other two, have a look and see which looks better to your eye! Just note what I said in the video about the arrows on the tiles. I personally like the look, but people I play with tend to forget you can't normally rotate the tiles if big visual arrows aren't there to remind them.

    Great work on your channel. I am not sure if you noted this but there is a reason they tell you to take the tiles out and make a cube which is that you can see any tiles that have the little "bump" on the back side. These tiles have connections out of 3 of the 4 edges of tiles (rather than 2 as the majority do). Of course you can still use the bag but be aware that saying "feel around and decide if you want a 3 exit or 2 exit tile also risks that you can feel the grooves on the tiles, either accidentally or on purpose.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yup, aware of the cube. Probably important if you're playing competitively, but seems like a big hassle otherwise.

    I find this video to be a little odd as a Board Gem. I find that people who still think that Ascension is worth playing have some sort of odd connection to it like addicted to the app or this is the game that partner and me fell in love with, etc. It is a lot less deep than the Cerberus Engine Game. The problem with Ascension is that it takes too long live when you play 3 or 4 players, only having one way the game ends is a major problem, no real interaction (almost secondary) and the live fill is also a problem. There is no tension of having to choose between buying a card that helps you a bit or leaving it and buying a Kick instead because the card doesn't help your opponent and leaving them with bad options to buy. No tension between buying that Super Villain or that cool Super Power in the lineup, factoring in that Super Villains are a way to end the game along with line-up deck being depleted, and factoring in that you don't have any defense cards for that next Super Villain Attack. The tension of picking on someone with an Attack card in your deck (Why did you pick me?). The interaction of the Super Villain Attack along with the mounting pressure of those eight cards being depleted which causes the end game. The other players have a way to pull the leader back with the targeted attack card. I also think that the simplified economy of just Power makes for a deeper game when the game is just a deck builder. You don't gain anything in Ascension with the second, third currencies. It works in Tyrants of the Underdark, but in that Power is on par with Webs because of the Area Control. I just don't think that Ascension qualifies as a Board Gem. You have standards and it is neither forgotten, have simple rules or a high degree of interaction. Keep up the good work, though and keep fighting the good fight.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems 13 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Thanks for the comment. I haven't played a tonne of Cerberus Engine games, but they always felt like a poor shadow of Ascension with only one currency, so strategy seemed to devolve to "just buy the best thing you can afford". Happy to be shown that's wrong with more plays. Ascension is not my typical game. My like of it isn't due to nostalgia; my first plays of it didn't excite me. I never got "addicted" to the app, but the app is very good and with more plays I came to appreciate Ascension more and more. (I might feel the same if I played Cerberus Engine games a lot.) It is still popular today, with lots of expansions and new variations like the Tactics game, so for sure it's still a gem today.

    Got those 2 and I love them so much, even got the Back to the Future one with fun Mcfly picture mechanic and Delorean miniature ! (it got some "dungeon crawler in a city" vibes) The BGG community have done A LOT to improve that good Alien game, there's character elimination mode, randomiser alien moves App, even a Jonesy and Ash printed plastic figures done by some. Even without that, the fact Alien and android decks goes hardcore ("calm" cards removed to leave only big "encounters" with 3-4 morale/lose scrap items, Nest card with instant -2 morale; to simulate the end of the movie) is intense. Prospero hall was such a great compagny, such a shame all those capitalists moves cost us a great series of fun and truly dedicated movies boardgames.

    Horrified is probably the cooperative game I enjoy more than any ever, but admittedly I’m not much into coop games. Horrified I played over and over when I got it. American Monsters wasn’t very good and while Greek Monsters was better than American, I still think the first one is really all you need.

  • @torelaursen4139
    @torelaursen4139 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Horrified is good and definetly the best of the two. Alien is so so. I feel like they lost out quite abit when they didn't design it around character elimination. The movie is a fantastic last woman standing horror movie. Others that come close to Horrified from the same or similar designers are Jaws and Back to the future back in time.

  • @kerim8666
    @kerim8666 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Things went downhill after Prospero hall and Ravensburger end their partnership (for both parties). Horrified and Villainous sequels progressively got worse: they started having glaring typos, rules ambiguities and lack of polish. I would put Alien and Gargoyle game in this camp as well. They tried to replicate the success of Horrified, but they are not good. The designer of Alien: FotM, put out a more challenging variant on BGG called the DIrector's cut, but I quickly realized that the designer was trying to fix/patch his game in real time. Too much of a hassle...

    A GEM of a video, very informative. From my experience: The combos in Gift of the Elements feel very crunchy and very satisfying. BUT... the transformed cards are broken as hell, the one that gives you VPs for the cards in the center row is ridiculous and sucks the whole fun out of the game. I have no idea how it went past through playtesting.

    • @BoardGems
      @BoardGems หลายเดือนก่อน

      You're referring to the events that can be purchased into transformed cards? Yes, they're very powerful, but they kind of should be; when they're drawn it becomes a race to try to get them. Getting one is very powerful, but they're also pretty darn expensive. The one you mention though is a bit much, agreed. There have been a few like those in other expansions, like Adayu the Serene - would have been plenty powerful if it just Unite-d to every faction, but noooo, it Multi-Unites. Well, in general the balance is hit or miss in the game. There are some cards that come up that you should just always buy. It's a shame, but also very hard to avoid the occasional imbalance in a game with a huge variety of purchasable cards.

    Thanks for a great review! :) I agree with only losing 1 die per bid, it makes the bidding a little bit crazier/riskier since the punishment is not gradual/dynamic. I love this game, but some people I've played with have had trouble dealing with only the choice of either RAISING or CHALLENGING the bid, because they agree with the current bid that it's most likely correct so they don't want to either raise or challenge. In this case the "Calza" rule is amazing because it gives them the possibility to simply say "I agree" and take the risk. :)

    Terrific, informative video. Thanks for taking the time. Like you, I've played a ton on the app (iOS & Steam) over many, many years.. Such a quality app! After playing the cardboard version for the first time at BGGCon last November, I decided to keep my eye out for anyone selling a "lot" of expansions w/ base game. I didn't care about what edition it was and I wasn't aware of the crowd-funding version. Got lucky spending ~$87 to a guy in London for his collection. I was in London on vacation, so no shipping :). I brought the collection home and sorted it into 4 sets (Chronicle of Godslayer + Return of the Fallen; Soul of Swords + Immortal Heroes; Rivals of Vigil + Darkness Unleashed; Dreamscape). Each of the 4 sets fits in a 500-count card box (cards are sleeved), so I can quickly grab a set to play w/o board & rule book. And I only need 2 original boxes for the total of 4 sets. I agree w/ you about keeping sets separate for better synergy. Thanks again, Rob

    thank you for this! I am not one who wants to spend a lot of time guessing at the optimal way to cram components into a box in order to avoid lid lift so this version is not for me. In fact, I just got over a similar experience on a different board game & after much exasperation & time I finally did stumble onto the right solution & resorted to snapping a pic of it all (which I printed out & stuck in the box for future reference).

    i think BiTS is Tetris related as it is taking the whole Tetris mechanic on its head. Much like Dig Dug through Pac Man on its head. If you think about Dig Dug you are creating the maze and the goal is to destroy your tormentors rather than survive the tormentors. BiTS, you are making the shapes rather than surviving the shapes or minimizing damage or the shapes as the come up.

      Certainly. But I think people who liked FITS because of its Tetris-ness were disappointed that BITS diverged so far from the Tetris polyomino formula. (I like BITS a lot, to be clear. Less derivative and includes more variety out of the box.)

    Mosaic (Continuum Games) for 2 players (more can play) is abstract and perfect information. Try that.

      Looks interesting, but also looks expensive and maybe hard to find. I doubt I will acquire a copy anytime soon. But thanks for the suggestion! I've noted it. Who knows what'll happen in the future.

    I did not expect to find an MF DOOM song I've never heard before by watching this video, lol, that is pretty awesome. Maybe you and your son could watch Samurai Champloo, it's one of my favorite short anime series' and features an amazing hip/trip hop score by Nujabes and others.

    1) If you ever watch any "anime" movie (and can handle heavy themes), please let it be Perfect Blue by Satoshi Kon. It is one of my favorite movies of all time -- not just within its genre. And if you can make time for it (or prefer much kinder themes), his movie Tokyo Godfathers is also incredible and is my favorite Christmas movie. 2) Less importantly, if you are concerned much about background noise, a dynamic mic will serve far better than a condenser. They receive sound only from a very specific direction.
