There is a new board game called Joyride, from a different designer, which uses the same core mechanisms, tweaked very slightly at the margins, with new art, special powers and additional rules. However its essence, its core, is essentially unchanged. It turns out the designer of this new game (a developer at the publisher) was previously in talks to license a new edition of Powerboats. Nothing came of it. Now Joyride is out and lists Powerboats as one of many inspirations, despite no other "inspiration" being copied anywhere close to the extent that Powerboats has.
A lot of hobbyists seem to think this is just great! I suspect a few just want a Cool New Game and to enjoy it without guilt, and many more I'm sure never played Powerboats to compare (in fairness, it's been out of print for quite a while) and are just siding based on vibes. In this video I offer my informed take, as someone who HAS played Powerboats, and who was stunned by the blatant copying when reading the rules to Joyride.
There are a lot of bad takes out there, and I didn't address many in this short video. If you want to send some more my way, tell me I'm wrong, go ahead - so long as you're polite, acting in good faith and willing to listen to the counterpoints. If I get enough then I'll make a follow-up video addressing them.
