Magnus is the best. Perhaps the best player in history recognizes both the joy and the struggles regular players face in a game they both love. I've never seen him show contempt for patzers and woodpushers. He jokes, but never at other's expense and often at himself. I don't see anyone capable of replacing him.
@@dunhill1 I said, perhaps. And it's obviously difficult to compare different eras. Best is also not your favorite or the player you model your own game after. My favorite players are still Tal and Lasker. With age I've grown to appreciate Capablanca, Botvinnik, Smyslov, Petrosian and even Karpov more. And Kramnik. I lived through both the Fischer glory years and Kasparov's epic fights with both Karpov and Deep Blue. Fischer probably had the greatest period of dominance we'll ever see and while he didn't do it completely alone, he didn't get the opening prep of the great Soviet players against Spassky. And he was right, the Soviets rigged draws. Fischer, Kasparov, and Magnus all have an indomitable will. All seem a little off. As if their minds work differently and were built for chess, but each in a unique way. * What makes Magnus special is the way he sees the game. Fischer saw it in terms of truth and best by test. Kasparov in terms of dynamics, yet always in terms of accuracy. Magnus seems to be flexible, non-dogmatic. He will play second best moves, play endgames forever, he plays way more openings than Fischer, and probably Kasparov. Yet, you can't completely separate his play from engines and databases. I think he had his style before engines, but today's chess is very different. What I like about Magnus is his humanity. Fischer and Kasparov were driven. Magnus seems more relaxed. Chess is important, but it isn't everything. And he makes chess fun. In the old days, the great players were lawyers, philosophers, diplomats, engineers, opera singers and concert pianists. I've seen too many chess players with psychological issues.
Okay, that was so dang fun to watch. As the game went on, you eased him out of the mildly awkward mega-genius to a having-fun mega-genius. I'm a huge Magnus fan, and I'm really enjoying your channel, Anna!

Never ending for sure. Further, if you are going to swim in the shark infested waters of the top 100 players, the level of time commitment required to improve your game is just off the charts. Carlson has been living and breathing chess for decades now. He had the talent, but he poured TONS of hours into getting good. Carlson has this one quality in incredible abundance: tenacity. Whatever he did, he was going to excel at. I work in computers, and I find the best in that field have the same quality. They are tenacious and won't give up.

0:55 when he realizes she is good and smiles 1:25 when he realizes she is really good! 3:27 when he knows he will win and can give her hints about his tactics
That's not what happened at 3:27. Magnus had just blundered. If you look at the eval bar, it was the only time she actually had the upper hand, and if played the rest of the game with accuracy could've beaten Magnus.
She played really well, positionally he was so much stronger but whoever she is she played like a master not joking, super impressive. The game was over half way through though
She played really well.. at first magnus did not take it seriously but after sometime magnus realised that it would not be a silly game. So he focused properly
I thought he was very gracious and even offered a couple of hints / tips. this gave me great respect for the guy. what a good sport! Anna gave him a run for his money and she got a Hi Chat out of it!
I love the little teaching moments Magnus and a lot of super GMs allow while playing lower rated players. At all stages Magnus knew he’d win but when he saw gaps in his own game he prompts them to think and give positive responses to the correct moves.

Well done.
I decided to see what Magnus meant when he said tactics so I put the board position in a chess engine and the move was knight captures pawn and gave black a 6.29 advantage at 19 ply
that was the moment Anna lost. There was only ONE right move there; the moment she didn't take it, it was over.
I put it Into an engine and it said Nxd5 but it doesnt really win anything, its still an equal position
What I found particularly impressive was his comment at the start, how he would talk to the streaming audience, "If I win," not when he wins, but IF he wins. So respectful.

Kind of a forgone conclusion.
He is Norwegian, a man of the people.
I don't follow the man's career. Has he always been that way, or has he been humbled over time?

I love how Magnus literally gives her the best move my saying play bishop b5 because from that position she can bishop A3 to defend the outpost for the knight which he would respond with blocking with his pawn which gives her a pawn on the bishop b5 square. Magnus is the best. Perhaps the best player in history recognizes both the joy and the struggles regular players face in a game they both love. "best player in history"? Hmmm. Do you really think he could beat Bobby Fischer in his prime if he were alive today?
@@dunhill1 magnus prime > fischers prime
*
What makes Magnus special is the way he sees the game.
