If a shiny metal (chrome or polished stainless or aluminum) has scratches or is pitted, try a high quality metal polish (like Mother’s or Meguiar’s....there are others) saturated into 0000 steel wool with light pressure. 0000 steel wool will get you much closer to a perfect surface and do it faster. Then follow up with another coat with a soft rag and whatever pressure makes you happy (I’m a little lazy so light is my “go to” option). Steel wool is your friend but DO NOT use anything more aggressive than the 0000. You will never do damage with that grade of steel wool even if you use more pressure. I always say light pressure knowing that it will yield the same outcome as heavy pressure so why bother with the extra exertion?
I use Autosol and have for a few years. Buying new product you never know if its going to do what it says on the tin and half the time it is a waste of money. So it good to see another product in action that works.
The best result I have noticed that I got was the autosol. But also there is a technique in using this and that is, depending on how bad the chrome is the best result is using tissue.
I always use a maschine to polish my cars. If the chrome isn‘t bad, I simply use the same polish as I use for the paint. Pay attention to the inside of the bumper, we had 2 bumpers extremely rusted from the inside to the outside.
I’ve only ever used autosol on my jag and to be fair I’m very happy with it 👌 but still interesting to watch but I think I’m sticking with what I know 👍
I use autosol many years now ways love the result have to do it every year canadia winter does lots of damaged but going to try auto sol first then finish with maguires
Winters are hell on cars. When I lived in Colorado I would keep my nice car in the garage and buy a dependable hooptie to drive throughout the winter. The damage snow and salt and sand does to any car is just not worth it. I now live in Fl no salt or sand.
I remember using toothpaste once. Aquafresh, I think. It does work if you want something not very abrasive, but it dries with a smear. It does make your chrome minty fresh. I haven't used Autosol on my teeth yet. 😉
Hi Adam, good video. I have used Autosol for a long, long time but I have to say I never use it on good chrome. I use it for things like polishing aluminium and cleaning copper and rusty metal pipes. I usually then buff the metal using a proprietary polish (I tend to prefer Autoglym) and it always works a treat. I was actually warned not to use Autosol on good chrome as it removes the plating apparently. No idea if that's true.
I'd agree. Chrome polishes work by removing a minute layer of chrome. I don't polish mine (MGB) any more. Instead, when washing I ensure it's well buffed off to get rid of any water marks. It gives great results.
Maguires is always improving their products. They always smell nice too. I have used Maguires for over 50 yers now. They made good products at a good price.
I used Autosol on my S1 XJ6 and it does a good job but requires a lot of effort. I bought an old Jaguar S1 xj6 grille it looks like it's mazak rather than 'proper' chrome and doesn't do as good a job. I like to put bodywork polish on after the autosomal as an extra layer of protection.
Interesting. The Meguires has a sealant though which I don't think Autosol has, and which may add to the perception of the finish. I have a Series 3 XJ, and have long been using Autosol, but I also treat the chrome with wax afterwards - the same carnuba wax product that I use on the paintwork. This improves the appearance and I hope helps to protect it a little.
I should make a quick video. I've been caught up on my streams and Instagram. If you want to see the results check out @jaggedout and I have the before and after of one of the worst spots on the car.
I'd been using an old product from our 50s motorcycle days: Simichrome Polish. Love it but it seems greasy which makes me think it may last longer. Why do I think that? I have no idea. lol
That said, Amway Chrome and Glass Cleaner was great. Not sure if it is still produced but I'd be surprised if it wasn't. It was a mainstay product for decades.
But are you testing it on aluminum alloy... That is the required difference needed to know what to get! Nothing ever beat Mothers Billet metal polish. Now it is only in Australia I am Pissed😫😠
Very interesting Adam, I’ve only ever used standard paint polish before! I will purchase some autosol as I do have one small area of pitting on my 74 series 2 rear bumper. Interestingly, my wheels do not have the trim that yours do, on my car the whole wheel is chromed.
Hi Adam. Very interesting comparison. Although l've never used McGuires l could here the difference. Having used Autosol for 55+years lt's a case of "better the devil you know " . I get an excellent result by using a lot less material but with wire wool on surface rust. However l agree that Autosol would be too coarse on new chromework. Autosol comes into it's own on aluminium , The cam covers etc on the older Jaguars . Thanks Adam.
Great video as usual Adam to get the rust an pitting your can use very fine steel wool gently before the chrome polish. I use the Norwegian “troll ull”

I have used both products for years . I used the Autosol for roughing out and anr the Maguires for finishing for the best results.
That’s great to hear! That’s the same results I got. Thanks for watching 🙂

Autosol is also great for polishing Aluminium wheels and Stainless steel trim and bumpers .

I have mostly used Autosol too but I was impressed with the shine from Meguiars. Now I just have all the other chrome to do... 😊
I use autosol many years now ways love the result have to do it every year canadia winter does lots of damaged but going to try auto sol first then finish with maguires
Hope it works well for you too!

Mothers Mag and Aluminium Polish is what I use. It’s an American product and so far it’s done a very good job with minimum effort.
I haven't heard of it but I'll have to try. Really nice to find out about new products. Thank you 😊
Living With A Classic That’s the second new product I’ve told you about this week. At this rate I’m going to end up costing you a fortune 😂
Just don’t send me any adds for cars that need tlc 😅
Living With A Classic 🤔
Both Mothers and Meguiars are great California products I’ve been using for over 30 years.

Mothers Mag And Aluminum. It got all the oxidation out of my paint like it was nothing too.
I’ll have to try it! Thanks for watching 🙂
Asks for the tip. Oxidized aluminum is hard to fix.

Why tru the metal polish first and then apply the McQuirers

I use Eagle One "Never-Dull" - it comes in a saturated wad in a can and you rip off little chunks. Works great. Does not smell nice.
I’ve never heard of that one. Thanks for the tip!
It would be interesting to try a comparison on polishing aluminium (ie an alloy wheel) Maybe.
I like that idea! I have 2 cars with bare aluminium wheels that I can try it on
Nice job. Beautiful car
Does anyone have a view on using a rotary polisher for cleaning chrome? Is it worth a try for pitted chrome?
I haven’t tried it but maybe someone else here has 🙂
What was that red convertible in the background of the intro?
A 1991 Jaguar XJS Convertible
@@LivingWithAClassic Beautiful .. i have a 2001 XJ8 .. but might need to get the XJS to go with it :)
They are great cars!

Thank you Mats! I like that product too and even “Svinto” sometimes 🙂
