Bringing an avant-garde aesthetic to the Coke Studio landscape, Mekaal Hasan’s debut as a music director finds him taking a classic ghazal and framing it with progressive and experimental tropes. Unleashing his signature sound, courtesy of a lush guitar tone and Ahsan Pappu’s emotive flute-playing, Hasan creates a carefully constructed soundscape fitting for the themes of rapture and cruelty that Faiz touches upon in his poetry. The silvery vocals of Humera Channa paired with the honeyed tone of Nabeel Shaukat’s voice make for a fantastic combination to take on this humble tribute to Malika-e-Tarranum, Noor Jehan.

While listening to the "aur bhi dukh hai zamane mein mohabbat ke siva, raahatein aur bhi hai wasl ki raahat ke siva." part, I remembered a song which talks in a similar tone- Yeh dil tum bin kahin lagta nahi.
The lines, "mohabbat kar toh le lekin, mohbbat raas aaye bhi. Dilon ko bojh lagte hain kabhi zulfon ke saaye bhi. Hazaron ghum hai iss duniya mein apne bhi paraye bhi. Mohabbat hi ka gham tanha nahi, hum kya karein." (by Sahir Ludhianvi ji)
Wow! This looks like a modern rendition of it. Sahir saab must have gone through this gazal and be like.. i can do better than commentary, i can write a song that makes sense to this era!

Faiz used to write romantic poems but when he saw the turmoil that britishers were doing to the indians and pakistanis ,he wrote a last ode to the romantic poem and after writing this poem ,he only wrote revolutionary poems. Also there is a part in the song where the instruments are played at very harsh tones and speedily(1:21). According to me they represent the chaos and turmoil of the situation that civilians were facing.

Great interpretation of one of the best Nazm out there.
Just one thing i'd like to correct, Faiz was born in 1911 and he was around 25 in 1936, and not 18.
In my opinion, Age is a major factor in a poets life because upcoming generation of poets major themselves according to other poets with respect to their Age and Depth of knowledge and poetry.

My interpretation of this song is faraz's dilemma where does his responsibility lie... towards the love for his partner or towards the love for his country...and the song basically talks about the time of india pakistan partition

What a beautiful decode. So glad that you incorporated fragments of the ghazals from such wide videos. I almost always tear up listening to Zohra Sehgal Ji's mujhse pehli si mohabbat- the way she goes about the ghazal- a different spark altogether.
Loved the way you were keeping it light, this ghazal can get extremely heavy if one starts understanding and viewing the world in that manner.
Loved the way you bridged the idea behind the ghazal and going into the ghazal, "ab agar iss chasme ko chada liya toh ghazal samajh mein aa jayega."
