To understand this ghazal , you sort of have to know a little background. During the midst of World War II (1942), Faiz Ahmed Faiz enrolled in the British Army (during British Indian Empire), attained the rank of Captain and was assigned a desk job so remained out of World War II field operations. After witnessing the 1947-1948 Kashmir war (Between India and Pakistan), Faiz chose to leave the army and submitted his resignation in 1947. Even though he remained a paper pusher in the Army, the horrors of war compelled him to have compassion for his fellow human beings, Therefore; his heart that was filled with passion for his beloved took a turn and hence the passion changed to compassion. He couldn't love his sweetheart in the same manner , when his heart kept bleeding while his fellow humans continued suffering. When i was child i always used to mock this song and cry out loud this line "Mujhe se pahli si muhabat mera mahboob na maang" and then I used to criticize the poet that he is weak person that he can't love his beloved. Yeah, Arslan Bhai, I know the history of that nazam. When Faiz was kicked out from Pakistan, he wrote a Nazam.(mere dil mere musafir, hua phir se hukam saadir, k watan bader hon hum tum, den gali gali sadaen karen rukh nager nager ka.....! and so on) But when the sanctions against him were removed by the Gov. then his followers asked him to come Pakistan. His love for Pakistan was unconditional, then he wrote *Mujhse pehli se Muhabbat mere Mehboob na mang* in which Mehboob was Pakistan.....!

It was an apt choice to have Humera ji and Nabeel sing this yesteryear classic Faiz nazm sung by Noor Jehanji. Both these artists have had a couple of superlative performances on this platform (read Ambwa Taley and Bewajah) in the previous seasons and I am glad that they make their re-entry in Season 10. Melodically this is a simple, pleasing nazm on raag Yaman and I am glad that the composer- Mekaal Hasan hasn't try to meddle with the melody. Most of the experimentations in the music is mostly during the interludes. The arrangement is mainly on bass-line, guitars and percussions. The flute-duo fill in beautifully during the interludes along with the electric guitars. And both the interludes somehow try to create a different, but beautiful aura and then very nicely lead back to the main nazm. The chorus at places is accompanied by some distortion guitar (like 02:48) which adds a hint of modern tempering into this overall traditional recipe! The backbone of the rendition however were the vocalists duo! There is always a tendency for vocalists to do a little too much on a platform like this which is meant for fusion. But I am glad that they stuck to the original melody and delivered a flawless rendition. The addition of male-female duo was a welcome change as it kept the listener engaged with varied emotions and singing styles from each of them. The harkats and variations were masterfully done and in synch (like the one at 02:21 and the way they end at 05:58 ). Overall a great recreation of an existing classic! Perhaps a great way to introduce this to the current pizza-burger generation :)

Maybe that is why this song is so beautiful. I mean think about it. The fear behind the lover's eyes is the only thing greater than his love. That fear emancipates Faiz's barriers of selflessness and devotion and yet it seems so full of beauty and life. Maybe fear is more beautiful than love. Maybe fear is the only thing that can overcome love. Isn't that why the poet said "Shehr e janan mein ab basifa kon hai"
The poem is about realising that there is more to life than romantic love. The poet talks about poverty and the oppressed and he realizes that they also deserve his attention. The beloved is still beautiful but he cannot be 100 percent devoted to her.

When i was child i always used to mock this song and cry out loud this line "Mujhe se pahli si muhabat mera mahboob na maang" and then I used to criticize the poet that he is weak person that he can't love his beloved.
Now i have grown up and get to know what Faiz sahab try to portrait through these lines and what love he was talking about.

Yeah, Arslan Bhai, I know the history of that nazam. When Faiz was kicked out from Pakistan, he wrote a Nazam.(mere dil mere musafir, hua phir se hukam saadir, k watan bader hon hum tum, den gali gali sadaen karen rukh nager nager ka.....! and so on)
But when the sanctions against him were removed by the Gov. then his followers asked him to come Pakistan. His love for Pakistan was unconditional, then he wrote *Mujhse pehli se Muhabbat mere Mehboob na mang* in which Mehboob was Pakistan.....!
It's a privilege to hear something like this. A perfect 10 on 10.

It was an apt choice to have Humera ji and Nabeel sing this yesteryear classic Faiz nazm sung by Noor Jehanji. Both these artists have had a couple of superlative performances on this platform (read Ambwa Taley and Bewajah) in the previous seasons and I am glad that they make their re-entry in Season 10.
Melodically this is a simple, pleasing nazm on raag Yaman and I am glad that the composer- Mekaal Hasan hasn't try to meddle with the melody. Most of the experimentations in the music is mostly during the interludes. The arrangement is mainly on bass-line, guitars and percussions. The flute-duo fill in beautifully during the interludes along with the electric guitars. And both the interludes somehow try to create a different, but beautiful aura and then very nicely lead back to the main nazm. The chorus at places is accompanied by some distortion guitar (like 02:48) which adds a hint of modern tempering into this overall traditional recipe!
The backbone of the rendition however were the vocalists duo! There is always a tendency for vocalists to do a little too much on a platform like this which is meant for fusion. But I am glad that they stuck to the original melody and delivered a flawless rendition. The addition of male-female duo was a welcome change as it kept the listener engaged with varied emotions and singing styles from each of them. The harkats and variations were masterfully done and in synch (like the one at 02:21 and the way they end at 05:58 ).
Overall a great recreation of an existing classic! Perhaps a great way to introduce this to the current pizza-burger generation :)

It's so ironic when you think this remarkably beautiful song is about falling out of love with an old beloved's beauty...
Maybe that is why this song is so beautiful. I mean think about it. The fear behind the lover's eyes is the only thing greater than his love. That fear emancipates Faiz's barriers of selflessness and devotion and yet it seems so full of beauty and life. Maybe fear is more beautiful than love. Maybe fear is the only thing that can overcome love.
Isn't that why the poet said
"Shehr e janan mein ab basifa kon hai"
Its about partition and that old beloved is undivided india.
The poem is about realising that there is more to life than romantic love. The poet talks about poverty and the oppressed and he realizes that they also deserve his attention. The beloved is still beautiful but he cannot be 100 percent devoted to her.
