  • A Pokémon with Iron Fist ability is supposed to boost the power of punching moves, but what is a punching move really? Why do pokemon without arms learn punching moves and why do moves that use arms and fists sometimes not count as punches? I explain that here on my tutorial about Iron Fist ability.

pokemon could really use a QOL for move icons representing their categories like punching, cutting, biting etc and effects like crit chance+, flinch, paralyze, etc.
also could be opportubity for more specific move subtype boosting abilities. like one for boosting kicks, headbutts, claws (we just got cutting move boost, claws is close to it but dont get boosted)

For the hammer moves, it at least makes sense for Wood Hammer to not be boosted by Iron Fist (and thus not be counted as a punching move). It is specifically stated to be more like a tackle in the move description, although that still means its name is flat out incorrect ("hammer" in an attack name usually refering to a hammer fist, a specific type of strike with... well, your fists). In the long list of names for a Grass-type Double-Edge, a type of punch isn't one I'd come up with, personally. "Wood Charge," as basic as it is, would at least be a more accurate pick.
As for Crabhammer, that move is just an anomaly. What else would a crab attack with, if not its big ahh forelimbs that are used primarily for grasping?

pokemon really needs to add a more advanced screen for attacks which show what 'traits' it has, like if it's a powder or punching move or something. If it makes contact, if it's a sound move, just pretty much anything you need to know.
I think they don't want to confuse children or whatever but it's much more confusing to see "A boost to punching moves" and then not know exactly what those are. or that powder moves don't work against grass types, sure you can google it but relying on your community to explain your games for you is pretty bad.
honestly this sort of thing is standard in games now, it wouldn't be hard to do. have the base damage number be white and then have a green number next to it that's the boosted number. if you select it then it explains what it's being boosted by.
have the stats screen show what the base stats are along with the new boosted stats if you've used sword's dance or something. What do the arrows mean? I use swords dance and get two arrows? ok? how much is each arrow? my attack was sharply increased? cool?

The reason that Ice Hammer and Hammer Arm are boosted is because their descriptions in both English AND Japanese explicitly state that the user swings its arm or fist to attack. Wood Hammer references slamming the *body* into the foe, and Crabhammer references Pincers, which are not fists.

    • @danieldavies3092
      @danieldavies3092 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I guess that depends on the shape of the pincers and the body shape and motion of the Pokémon using the attack.
Crabominable clearly had a sort of hybrid fist/pincer thing going on in its confusing ass design. The only other mon that has limbs with pincers and punching moves that comes to mind is Scizor with its Bullet Punch, but its pincers are enclosed and rounded, and it's more humanoid than insectoid so the action that it's making is definitely a punch, there's no reason it should be excluded from learning them.
Keep in mind these are the games in which both Wooper and Gastly can learn Ice Punch, despite both lacking arms entirely. Logic isn't exactly the strong suit here, we kinda have to make our own.

The translation oddities from times before pokemon was developed with translation in mind is fascinating. It's especially interesting as I remember how it changed my perception of words I first learned from moves! I particularly remember being confused by the meaning of "feint", as feint the normal type attack and feint attack the dark type move have such different effects and availability.
Surprise surprise, feint is actually feint (フェイント) while feint attack is sneak/trick attack (だましうち). In general i think a lot of the early dark type moves in were translated terribly
But then there's things like つばめがえし (aerial ace) where i can't really blame them. I remember being extremely confused as to why so many pokemon that cannot remotely fly at all could use a move called "aerial ace". But of course, it was a pun of a sword technique in japanese 🙃

Curse was one of the most confusing. Apparently in Japanese it's a Japanese word that can mean either "curse" or "slow", hence the speed drop.
I'm not sure if the localizer got that pun and just translated one meaning for lack of a better idea, or just missed the pun altogether, but I'd probably have called the move "Pokey" to both reflect the voodoo pin reference of the ghost version of the move and the speed drop of the regular version.

As a Japanese speaker, I want to give a few corrections or clarifications
    ● At 1:09 you explain Japanese kanji, but the word used on TH-cam for "subscribe" is not 加入 but actually 登録 which roughly translates to "register"
If you switch the TH-cam UI to Japanese, you can clearly see the subscribe button with チャンネル登録 written on it, and the subscriber number is called 登録者数. It's pretty common for Japanese TH-camrs to say stuff like チャンネル登録、高評価よろしくお願いします which pretty much means "please like and subscribe"
It kind of amused me that you wrote an explanation about the word choice, even though it was still wrong.
    ● It's also worth noting that whilst kanji is something that reduces the number of characters used, kanji isn't actually used in any games until generation 5, and even then it was completely optional, and kanji were still not used in the names of moves, items, and a few other things.
Part of it was due to technological limitations, especially back in the days of the Game Boy, but also because the game is aimed at kids, and kids generally start off learning hiragana and katakana, and then gradually learn kanji as they go through school. As such, stuff for younger audiences typically write with no or minimal kanji in order to be readable.
Legends Arceus was the first game that removed the kanji option from gen 5, and they replaced it with a furigana system, which basically means it's written normally with kanji, but has hiragana written above each kanji so kids can understand. However items and moves are still written without kanji to this day.
    ● At 2:31, you talk about the Move headlong rush, and when you bring up the Japanese name ぶちかまし I can understand that the word is difficult to properly translate, especially if you don't know Japanese too well. If you write it in kanji it's 打ち噛まし which immediately makes it clear that it's a punch because 打ち means to hit or punch (although this does kinda call into question how sucker punch, aka ふいうち, or in kanji 不意打ち doesn't count as a punch despite also using the same word).
Anyway, ぶちかまし can be interpreted as either a punch in the face, or a head-first charge.
    ● No localization notes on the hammer moves, but I'll note that the animation of Hammer Arm before the Switch era portrayed the attack with a fist and not a hammer. I think part of the issue is that the animations have gotten a lot lazier which can make stuff like this real confusing, but the in-game descriptions for both moves make it super clear: "The user swings its strong, heavy fist at the target to inflict damage. This also lowers the user's Speed stat."

It is small stuff like that that keeps me from getting invested in Pokémon. Alot of the new games and pokemon designs introduce really interesting amd world expanding concepts.
But the game itself tends to be no better than Yugioh where the company decides what should be popular amd they nerf anything that defies that.
Crabhammer not being a Punch move, despite anime-game-manga iterations that clearly define it as a punch, is symptomatic of the underlying design issues.

The worst part is that I can *sort* of see the logic for Hammer Arm and Ice Hammer being punching moves, but Wood Hammer and Crabhammer not being classified as such, and it mostly lies in what the opponent is being hit with.
Hammer Arm and Ice Hammer infer that the opponent is being struck with a fist or some kind of limb, since it'd be the overhead downward swinging motion of an arm. Wood Hammer is less using a fist directly but potentially using an on-the-spot grown tree or something similar to strike the target with. And Crabhammer isn't using a fist in the conventional sense, it's a physical blow using some kind of crustacean's claw.
...Even though in that case the claw would, in fact, be performing a function similar to a fist. But it's not five digits and balled up, so it doesn't count? I guess?
So at least to me, the logic of what counts for Iron Fist and what doesn't has at least some consistency, because either the move has to explicitly be a punch, be related to the act of punching in some form (either directly or referring to some form of martial art or street fighting involving the upper body or forelimbs,) or the move's description must infer as such (such as how Meteor Mash's description explicitly refers to the attack as a punch.)
Thus it feels like this is all technically correct. The best kind of correct.
(Even with the caveat that if Wood Hammer is creating a wooden construct to hit the opponent with, it raises the question of if it would count if said construct was in the shape of a fist...)

    • @CammyMeeleTea
      @CammyMeeleTea  ปีที่แล้ว

Right, but why not use a Blue fist like Hammer Arm's animation? Why did Ice Hammer use a blue Hammer of ice? That may not convey the proper info to someone facing Ice Hammer for the first time. You gotta catch a Crabominable or look it up, because the animation is unclear.

    • @drilltank-6603
      @drilltank-6603 ปีที่แล้ว

@@CammyMeeleTea You know, I wish I had a better answer for that one. Ice Hammer's description explicitly describes an arm being swung down, but it uses Wood Hammer's animation but recolored.
But if you want to get even more confused, consider the fact that Ice Hammer is more than likely leaning on Crabominable's status as a Fighting type, but Crabominable doesn't even have hands. Just claws.
Which throws things for a look in my books because by that logic Crabhammer should count too, but it doesn't.
The only thing I can think of is that Ice Hammer is supposed to depict a limb being covered IN ice that's being swung down, but then it loops back to your initial question since they could have just used a blue arm instead of a blue hammer.

The thing with the Hammer moves are the following:
Crabhammer is purely a smack by a Crabs Pincer. It's not punch because they use Pincers.
Wood Hammer is not a punch because it's a literal hammer.
Hammer Arm is obviously a Punch.
Ice Hammer is pretty much a clone of Hammer Arm. The animation in gen 7 was actually the same but Blue as Hammer Arm and it was for a Fighting type that punches. In gen 9 they gave it to Tinkaton and changed it to the Wood Hammer animation because it fits the name better but is still tied closely to Crabominable so stays a punch move.

Okay I don't mean to be that guy (I am about to be that guy) but I feel like these make sense to me
    - Sucker punch was named after the expression "to sucker punch", which is more of an expression and less of a literal punch so it makes sense for it not to be a punch (even though cheap shot sounds much better)
    - Headlong rush makes no fucking sense to me especially since it's mechanically the same as close combat so like i have no idea
    - The hammer moves to me can be broken down like this:
Hammer arm is definitely a punch, it's based off of the real world hammer fist strike and is fighting type so it's pretty clearly a trained punch and not just a slam, and every pokemon who learns this move has arms with the exception of Tornadus-T who sometimes has arms
Ice hammer is a punch because it was originally the signature move of Crabominable who, for all intents and purposes, has fists (or at least fist-like claws) since it gets the iron fist ability and is fighting type, so naturally this move should be boosted by iron fist even though Tinkaton now also gets this move
Wood hammer is not a punch since rather than using an actual fist in most cases, the user of this move is hitting the opponent with an actual piece of wood or hardened organic substance (with the exception of Sudowoodo because lmao), and many of the users of this move don't actually have arms but do have a wood component like Mimikyu or Exeggutor
Crabhammer is not a punch because it's not a trained punch with a fist like the first two, it's a slam with explicitly a crab claw, and no crab pokemon learn any punch moves except Crabominable, who effectively has fists
I am so sorry I did this but I felt like it had to be said but otherwise this is a very understandable thing to be confused about since it's really not that clear why these aren't punches

I know this is an older video, but I wanted to ask if you had any opinion on whether Poison Jab should count as a punch for the purposes of Iron Fist, as it currently doesn't. While I am aware that the original Japanese name could be more accurately be translated as "Poison Stab", the move description includes specific mention of potentially stabbing with an arm for the attack. And while a stab and a punch aren't the same thing, the move isn't boosted by Sharpness either, and a few Pokémon that have Iron Fist like Hitmonchan and Pangoro already learn the move, and I could easily imagine them using their fist at the end of their "arm stab". I know it's a minor detail, but it's always been in the back of my mind, like the fact that Strong Jaw doesn't boost the damage of Bug Bite.
