Kareem inspired me to become a skateboarder from age 11 to 18. And if I ever met him I will ask him were you ever bullied or teased for being a black man on a skateboard for supposedly doing a white sport
i really think kareem inspired hood kids to start skating, cause he was one of the first pros to come out of the hood. if you see some of the skaters that came from more poor people, or just some of the black skaters in their late 20's, they all look and skate like kareem. i think he made a big impact on black kids to start skating, which used to be a very white boy sport. look at tiago lemos. he skates like kareem nowdays, super cool to see
just saw an old clip of Kareem on instagram here in 2020 that led me to this video. Unbelievable how much his style pioneered the current, modern style of skateboarding. Even more unbelievable how he doesn't even get the credit for it. Yeah there's kid busting crazy tricks today, but Kareem holds the backbone for so many of those new styles. Thank you Kareem 🙌🏼
He totally gets credit for what he did in skateboarding. Please don't create a false narrative. Kareem was HUGE in skateboarding for several years and had a great run, better than most pros. THPS was toward the end of his career, really, and he was already huge. His name is up there with the all-time greats, and always will be. Kareem didn't exactly pioneer anything in particular; he went bigger than most, had great style, that's it. I wish kids today skated like him; I'm sure he could have done a lot of the stuff kids are doing today, but it just doesn't look good a lot of the time. I'd say most of the time the simpler trick looks best; even a short grind can look better than a long one. An ollie can look better than a flip. Today it's all about the harder trick, not what looks best; Kareem is a style skater, although he did go big.
Dude! Kareem had a huge impact on many skaters of the 90s and beyond! It wasn’t about how many video parts skaters had. How many parts they had meant nothing to us; we didn’t keep track. It was what was done in each part they had, how they headed into a trick and they leaned on out of a trick; how they dressed, talked, carried themselves on and off the board. Menace was one of the most exciting things to happen for 90s skating and it sucks it went so quickly.
it's interesting to hear the comments on learning about Kareem Campbell computer games. For anyone who had seen him in the flesh skating in the mid 90s it was mind blowing to see how he took tech tricks and did them big. Huge. Moreover, a flowing style that was powerful and effortless-looking at the same time. An absolute deity in the pantheon of skateboarding.
illlagitamit I will and honestly while I watch him skate I want him to make another one. And I don't skate my dad doesn't want me too he says ill hurt myself but I think that he is just being an overprotective dad. But on the low I'm trying to learn how to skate
Just want to say how much I appreciate you making these videos. As someone who grew up skateboarding in the 90's, these guys were like gods to me. Now that I'm 30, I don't really skate anymore, but I still vividly remember the skaters and their parts and how fascinated I was by them. Its so nice to see someone who is as passionate as I am, talking about it not only eloquently, but with such an effort to be accurate (the research does not go unnoticed). its absolutely brilliant commentary. Would love to see one on Chet Thomas. Thank you!
Campbell was one of my favorite skaters in the late 90s. He came to my towns board shop in like 99-00. I was in 5th grade I believe and was sour as hell that my mom wouldn't let me miss school to see him. Needless to say me and some friends skipped school and saw him at the shop along with 200 other kids who also skipped school.
i remember my cousin showing me a 411 video when i was like 10 and there was this downhill line by this black dude jumping over all kinds of shit with some hip hop playing in the back and when i asked who it was my cousin grabbed me by the arm and said very sternly "that's kareem campbell, he's the shit" or something like that. then i went out and had my dad buy me some axions and a city stars shirt. the dude was one of the main reasons i got into skating, much respect.
I like your attention to detail. Never seen these vids before but I appreciate this effort to educate those that didn't skate in the 90's or didn't pay enough attention to respect their elder pros.
My friends, Steve Olson is now a rapper who's down with a crew called New Cocoon. He goes by the name Crazy Monk. Look him up, he often posts old skate stuff on the frackbook!!
Well I could tell you a little about that. Right after AWS dropped their video in 09 and he had the final video part in that, he retired from pro skating sorta out of nowhere. Shortly after that, he became the team manager for Emerica. I'm pretty certain he's still their team manager to this day. I don't know why he retired from pro skating when he did because he was still on fire at the time. I guess he just wanted to move on and do other things but he's still active in the skate industry.
He shows up randomly, usually in emerica clips. Thrasher gave him the "Rather be Bartending" award. Sincerely hope he comes back, he's been my favorite since '96
Tony hawk really put a lot of people on with that game....that game saved sooo many careers..help put life back into skateboarding period. Tony hawk pro skater is one of the most important games ever.
'Skated with'? So did you go skating with him every Wednesday after you got out of Boy Scouts? Dude, there is like 3 minutes of footage of the guy. And he doesn't do anything amazing in the little footage that does exist. He is essentially a media or hype creation.
You do realize this video is pretty much like a short history documentary. As well as the fact that rad rat is definitely not old enough that he would have skated with the guy, on top of the fact he doesn't live in the same area as him. I don't understand why you would've assumed it.
He needs to have more respect for one of the greats. Kareem did a hell of a lot for skaters. As well as skate damn good. People didn’t film and document the same way people do now. Have some fucking respect for the guys that paved the way for you.
@@mattsowellmusic I really don't see why you got offended by this video. Tony T just put out another video part on Thrasher's website. Don't know too much about Cara Beth, and Stevie Williams skates a little still, mostly just runs DGK/Kayo Corp.
i used to skate some af 1s that were solid. if you know what to look for in skate shoes you can find nonskate shoes that work (suede, leather, doubles stitches, solid connection between sole and top)
Actually puma is making suedes for skating right now and they are quite good! And going to those nonskate shoes its the hardest question you could ask :P to be honest all nonskate shoes that are skated most likely are cheap canvas beaters like cons which I skated and were great before they had holes all over them. But by far the most fun for me were adidas gazzele. The way they flicked rocked and boardfeel was unimaginable but I wish I had my footprints in them because impact protection was inexistant :( Overhaul I still think that any skateboarding shoe is much better option than even the best nonskate shoe but they are fun to try non the less
Yes he did indeed, a LOT of dudes did back then. Puma Suedes were super popular shoes to skate with back in the 90s, as were Clydes and Leathers. IMO the Suedes are the best "non skate" shoes I've ever skated (and I've skated a lot of them). A lot of modern skate shoes own a ton to Puma Suede, Adidas Campus and Gazelle (and Etnies Lo-Cut Rap too) when it comes to the design part of the deal. I'd also say, that the basic Suedes are still legit shoes to skate, but I'd recommend to swap the insole to something a bit more cushioning.
How does his video not hold up today? Maybe its not as insane as the most insane shit right now but his skating in those old videos is FUCKING GOOD SKATING even by todays standards
I agree dude. It’s weird cuz he said that right after he explained that Kareem diverged from his peers by having clean style. Clean style never gets old.

Ok, he might have talked abou the Shortys brand but what happened to the Shortys skaters. Did they stop skating, did they sign with other companies.....at one point Muska was everywhere then his popularity just died. What happened to Muska, Olsen, Smolinski, Silva, ect..
"The thing is, if you go back and watch some of that footage now, it doesn't hold up all that great." I have been laughing at the absurdity of that for the last hour.
Sean Holland it may not be as “technical” or super trick oriented...but no one today skated like he does or did....his style was insane...pop n height on his tricks, ease n smoothness....effortless, many skates will never be measured up to he is one of them, MUSKA, Mullen, Reynolds, Iannucci with the best style and push out there, kids nowa day might be more truck inclined...but they have TH-cam and back then these Katz learned from skating...n developed true style...a lot of skaters today r just plain boring to watch....might sound redundant but old is classic for a reason...school urself man...u might be surprised...the footage is classic, the style, music, lines n graininess is dope period
@@watchmyepics yeah, I agree and that’s why I said the statement in quotations was absurd. I don’t need to school myself, I lived through that WI era. I know how classic it was/is.
Brian Wenning. You would see Brian Wenning back in the early millennium and you knew like this was it, this was gonna be a 10 year run like this was the future of skateboarding. And you would not think in a million years it would just all drop away. He seemed like the most unlikely candidate to fall victim to the party. He had a lot of ambition. But he was confused at the same time. You could kinda see it was kinda starting there. It was already beginning downhill just like the womanizing, the spending of the money and just the clubbing. It was already becoming grossly obscured. We were supposed to be on tour that summer and he didn’t show up and that was it. No one spoke to him or seen him since like imynamdabayis you know. He just left all mysterious like. Brian, where ever you at if you are out there…
Yep, G.MOS is in KC. If there’s a demo in KC, he’s there. If Escapist has an event, he’s there. He’s a nice dude. I used to go to Buzzard Beach (a bar in Westport), he’d always volunteer to help get me and my wheelchair up the stairs. I believe I still have his phone number if #RadRat does a video about him.
the skateboarder you didn't recognize in the unlocked video was Caine Gayle. Amazing skateboarder and pro for Plan B and DC in the nineties and rode for City Stars later.
One thing that wasn't mentioned is how much Kareem helped out other skaters. A lot of heavy hitters surfed his couch in the 90s/00s. I was lucky enough to meet him in 99' at the Radlands comp and he was super friendly and had time for everyone.
@@Rutabagas ohhh so thats why its called a modern ghetto bird. I found it confusing that sometimes people say ghetto bird and sometimes modern ghetto bird.
I work with Kareem all the time. He is a computer wiz. My company installs cell phone sites, we call Kareem to come load software and get the site on air. I've worked with him for a couple years, never realizing that he is the same guy I used to play as a character on the game when I was a kid.
muska still has the ghetto blasters, designs a series of shoes for supra called the Skytop theres 5 of em. he also does some killer paintings now and is overall a chill adult dude, he's stayed humble as fuck he acts like he didn't impact the skate world that much but anyone who was watching the VHS tapes with him and koston back in the day know that those 2 pushed it to the next level back then. so much respect for him
I think hes just too young to remember that famous bs flip down that insanely long Gap that got turned into a famous mural. And didn't even mention his shoe on duffs that hundreds of thousands of people still beg for a reissue to this day
Ghetto bird is such a fresh trick. On that bank. I mean a Nollie hardflip late back 180 is pretty much the same thing as hardflip “bigspin” just depending on where/when you catch it. Just like a pop shuv it late back 180 is pretty much same thing as a bigspin. Catching it earlier is kinda steezier anyway.
Would you be interested in talking about Josiah Gatlyn? It makes me wonder if there are other cases of a skater being extremely good but choosing not to have a career.
Awesome video man. Have you ever thought about getting people on the video? It seems like you do your research and know enough to ask some great questions.
Kareem inspired every black kid to hop on a skateboard!! I was one of those kids!
Now he’s inspiring those kids as adults to get this $$
Also a Puerto Rican which was me. Lol

Nakel’s Kareem’s nephew?
Love Kareem man. He had the sickest style in my opinion and he had some great companies.
@@watchmyepics back one eighth over 2 55galon trash cans we devolved
He literally says IMMEDIATELY AFTER THAT that it’s bc everyone was influenced by his style and built on it. So therefore he paved the way
@@watchmyepics yeah, I agree and that’s why I said the statement in quotations was absurd. I don’t need to school myself, I lived through that WI era. I know how classic it was/is.
Another great video! Love the channel keep up the good work.
Brian, where ever you at if you are out there…
Llort cipe 9 club
🔥 10 points for the effort lol
Thorough coverage as usual
gershon Mosley! he has footage recent on TH-cam from a thing called obtuse.
yes gmos! I had his signature shoe model about 12 years ago, almost shat myself when i got'em haha.
Agreed! The hell is Gershon?
ChocolateGalaxy wow. I remember that guy. A-team
Said what's up to him at the Vans park in Orange, CA after he killed that park. Super nice guy.
YESSSSS he was so good on mini ramp
this is pretty rad, im a big fan of skate history, so this is perfect for me!
Didn't Kareem skate for DROORS Clothing too? I use to love that brand!
The dude in the movie Mid 90s wears a lot of that old Droors gear.
Oh it's still around, it's just called DC Shoes now. (Droors Clothing!!!)
I had no idea that's what DC stands for. I jist got back from my first skate in a longggg time when I saw this, too haba
@@bradneff6678 yeah bro it's amazing how few ppl remember/know this!!
I saw him get into a fight in San Diego it was pretty cool. Great vid
what?
GERSHON MOSLEY
Candle Ankle Gershon is in KCMO doing the Obtuse Concept.
Well done! I really enjoyed this.
What happened to ronnie crager?
Brew master still skating he just skated up this new park by my work over here in OC
the skateboarder you didn't recognize in the unlocked video was Caine Gayle. Amazing skateboarder and pro for Plan B and DC in the nineties and rode for City Stars later.
campbell had a part in New World Order, 20 Shot Sequence and Trilogy
One thing that wasn't mentioned is how much Kareem helped out other skaters. A lot of heavy hitters surfed his couch in the 90s/00s. I was lucky enough to meet him in 99' at the Radlands comp and he was super friendly and had time for everyone.
Only person I ever played with on Tony Hawk 🛹✊🏾
great work bro. awesome edit! Sick channel
Ghetto Bird IS a hardflip late 180..
Bill Darling modern usage refers to hardflip late 180, but the actual trick is done nollie
I've worked with him for a couple years, never realizing that he is the same guy I used to play as a character on the game when I was a kid.
low key that real-estate is a cover
a real harlem nigga right here
Chad muska
just go follow that suprastar's instagram
grewbis doesn't ride for them anymore
He has a full line of shoes with Supra that he releases to this day. You have no clue what you're saying
muska still has the ghetto blasters, designs a series of shoes for supra called the Skytop theres 5 of em. he also does some killer paintings now and is overall a chill adult dude, he's stayed humble as fuck he acts like he didn't impact the skate world that much but anyone who was watching the VHS tapes with him and koston back in the day know that those 2 pushed it to the next level back then. so much respect for him
Hes not with supra anymore... hes on jamie thomas' new brand "the straye"
big fan of your videos man!
Colt CANNON!
Hornetprods colt’s still around. Doesn’t skate anymore, but check his Instagram for current happenings. Dude shredded.
He doesn’t skate anymore?!?!?! I remember in I think 2004 i went and saw him at an element skate demo at my local park in Ontario Canada
Haven't heard this name in a long time
man you are bringing back memories
this guy doesn't know what he's talking about
I think hes just too young to remember that famous bs flip down that insanely long Gap that got turned into a famous mural. And didn't even mention his shoe on duffs that hundreds of thousands of people still beg for a reissue to this day
Kareem Campbell now resides in Dallas, Texas and works in a variety of business ventures, notably real estate.
Tosh Townend
AA2 i still have his pro model emerica shoes bought back in 2003
Superb video, dude!
no mention of the legendary Duff's KCKs???!
My boy Danny Gonzalez
wrong intro :( RetroRippers is your best series right now! Great work.
Would you be interested in talking about Josiah Gatlyn? It makes me wonder if there are other cases of a skater being extremely good but choosing not to have a career.
I wanna say he had an interview with thrasher or the berrics a little while ago. I think he is a graphic designer now.
Great Channel, Great Videos.
Thank you.
what's arto saari doing?
last time i checked he had moved in to filming and taking photos...
Wow this is a great video and a great channel. Subscribing.
Do a Rippers on Steve Olson from Shortys
Awesome video man. Have you ever thought about getting people on the video? It seems like you do your research and know enough to ask some great questions.
JaVonte Turner
Third vid in and I had to sub. This is hilarious yet very informative if the facts are right
Ray Barbee
I don’t skate much more either, but I love the videos!
