That's why I drive a beater, wear the same clothes, cook most of my own food, etc. It's really not that hard if you commit to your savings and bills first, then only spend the rest. To be fair though, if you're bringing home under 50k, you probably need a bigger shovel.

I'd be very interested in learning where Rick and Jennifer are now. Maybe it's the skeptic in me, but people who have declared bankruptcy twice, owe money to family, use loan sharks, and still decide to have a child, aren't going to change after a month on TV.
1st I don't think they were telling the truth that they still had $20 left at the end of that first month w/how slow they answered. Well he didn't really say yes & she very slowly said yes. Secondly I hope I'm wrong but I don't think they stuck to the budget after the show. I really don't think she stuck to it.

My career was in mortgage banking. One thing I learned: people do not change (when it comes to spending and debt). They need more help than this woman can offer.
They definitely can and will change if they truly intend to. Her help is a kick starter some will use it and run with it for a lifetime. Others will fall back into a trap and live with the regret.
My spending habits are the same as when I was in my 20s, but fortunately I make significantly more now (even adjusted for inflation), so I'm able to save.
I think addressing Jennifer's poor self-esteem with a professional counsellor can help her figure out why she does what she does. I agree this is a deeper problem and most people don't change unless they get down to the foundation of "why am I doing this?"

I think they snookered Gail on claiming $400 for their child to be baptised. I've never heard of churches charging for baptisms, she wants the money for all the frills to accompany it, a splashy party or dinner, maybe new clothing. Their regular Church clothing would be fine and a pot luck to follow. There is no need for $400.
Totally agree that they most likely want all the frills. That being said it’s not unheard of to charge a fee for a baptism, especially if they are not regular members. Also common is the expectation to leave a large offering during the baptismal service but not “required”. I am suspicious of the $400 though… most likely they would be fine offering their normal amount and having a potluck reception like you said.
My three kids are baptized. It doesn't cost anything. We're not Catholic so maybe it's different for them, but I doubt it. It was probably a cake, the party, new clothes, like you said. Baptismal gown too.
I think it depends on the denomination. Im Pentecostal and it’s done as an older child or adult and is done during the service as free to anyone who desires it. Other religions make it into a party for a baby who has no idea what is happening and it means nothing to them
I had a friend, a former coworker who borrowed money from her friends. She asked me once if I could loan her some money and I responded no. She regularly went out for drinks at bars each week and spent money she didn't have. We were both single women, no kids, no cars, and she made more than me, but she didn't save for retirement. She passed away last year and I hope she's in peace now, but I have no regrets about not loaning her any money.
Would you give her money? Why would you buy drugs on someone that is addict? You were only problem solved by not throwing your money away. How did she pass? I think you were trying to save your friend. Life isn't fair. Sorry for your loss. I just lost my best friend and it's brutal. Let go

The death was announced on Facebook, but I had taken an absence from FB so I didn't find out until sometime in 2022. I first met her in September 1995 when we both worked at a bookstore in Harvard Square, Cambridge, Massachusetts. At the time we met, she was earning 40% more than I was, but I got a better job in 1996 and kept moving up. At the time of her death, I was earning more than she was making. She asked me for money in the aughts -- sometime around 2003 or later. I didn't even ask her for the amount. I just said no. We were friends, but not close friends. If she had been a close friend, I probably would have just given her the money. Every time we went out, I paid for her meal. We didn't go out together much and that was probably due to me telling her to pick a modestly-priced restaurant. She did have a side-business of organizing people's home, so I had logged on to FB in early 2022 to reach out to her to see if she wanted to organize my home. That's when I found out she had passed. One of the reasons I didn't loan her money was because she did go out frequently (every week) to drink at bars with friends, which is fine when you don't have debt, but when you're in debt and owning money to friends, that's not good. There was a time, I invited her to apply for jobs at a bank I was working, but she declined, saying she didn't want to take off time from work to interview. I believe part of the reason she passed away from the thyroid cancer was due to poor medical insurance. I have no regrets over not lending her the money, but regrets over maybe not getting together with her the last years of her life. I filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy 2 1/2 years ago. I had a car that was repossessed. I still owed $16,000 after it was sold at auction and the bank sued me. They were awarded a civil judgment which is enforceable for 20 years in the U.S. They can also garnish wages through the courts. It reached a point where I owed just over $20,000 due to fees and late charges and they were about to start taking $1,000/month that I absolutely couldn’t afford to lose. Since then, my husband and I live debt free. No credit cards and our 2 vehicles are old but they’re paid for. We just repair the cars as needed. We’re currently saving to buy our first home. The bankruptcy was a huge lesson and something I never want to go through again. I don’t understand how people end up having to file bankruptcy multiple times.
@ I “suddenly” (it took 6 months) got out of debt by filling chapter 7 bankruptcy. Along with the civil judgment, all other debts were included and wiped out. It’s also something I never want to do again and have kept myself debt free.

Dave Ramsey became our “friend” about 8 years ago. We paid off all credit cards. We kept one credit card and our debit cards. I track EVERY debit card purchase (yes, I balance the checkbook). If the credit card balance exceeds $500, I get anxious, even though I know we have the money to pay the balance. My Honda is 16 years old, and my husband’s car is 14 years old. We have maintained the cars, and have saved so we have cash to pay for future car purchases. Only debt we have is our mortgage, but pay extra and will pay off our mortgage in 7 years instead of the amortized 12 years. I use to lie awake at night trying to figure out how we were going to pay our $20K credit card/student loan debt. I sleep well now!! It was not easy, but sooooo worth it! BTW… our combined income is $80K.
I don't think the first daughter is his. Being a step parent is so hard. You have no control over anything. This single mom found a push over that had his money together and who never confronts her and she's distroyed him financially. Shame on her.

How old are your kids? My kids each got a bank account and a debit card at seven years old. I think this was the minimum age. The account was a kids account with limited options. For example, they could only spend €25 a week with their card. The limitations changed as they aged. For personal reasons, they also had a mobile phone at the same age, so they have always used that to see their account. They’re now 17 and 15 and they also have an investment account that they manage themselves - I still supervise though.
I opened my children savings accounts when they were babies, I put money in every week. It doesn’t have to be a lot, £10 a week quickly adds up. It will give them a little cushion. I have always treated their savings as a bill, so it’s something I commit to pay regardless.
At this point the court should not allow them to file bankruptcy like this anymore because we are literally paying for their bad habits. I like shopping too as long as it’s in the budget. I “love” how frivolous she acts and all happy and excited in the store…
My neighbor filed bankruptcy, then got married. She’s maxed out all those cards and actually was crying to me about how they don’t have money and they may lose their home. I didn’t say it but was thinking “oh well, you should’ve learned when you filed bankruptcy 5 years ago!” And 3-4 years ago I was trying to help her with understanding debt and getting a budget in place and she just laughed at me. 😮🙄
@@cjhoward409 in some cases bankruptcy is understandable (medical debt due to cancer, heart disease, car accident, etc). But if it’s merely due to retail therapy, luxury travel, spa visits, etc, it should not be legal to just get it wiped away… I mean, why don’t we all just start enjoying life, spend like there is no tomorrow and then let others bail us out… I know folks driving new suburban, living in large homes, who file just to get the credit card debt go away. They get to keep their car, house and just let us pay for basically their little splurges
@@reviewsbygen5591 in my case, I was recklessly spending because I had undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder and that is one of the manifestations of it. I was maybe $25,000 in debt so it wasn’t as bad as some people but my car was repossessed and my credit cards all went to collections because I couldn’t keep a job due to my disorder. I was finally diagnosed in 2019 and got a therapist, and my husband also helped me a lot. Now 4 years later I have built my credit back up to 700, got two credit cards and I pay off whatever I put on it before the interest accrues.
They seem to lack self control - not just with money but with food also as they're both grossly overweight. Then they decide to bring children into this mess. Sadly, kiddos will probably end up being fat and broke also. And 2 bankruptcies? No way. Looks like everybody ends up paying for their big fat mess except themselves, and that's just wrong.
I have made so many mistakes with money but have gained control and am turning things around. Being married to the wrong spouse (my situation as well) will defintely impact you.

This is why stores in my area quit doing layaway. People wouldn't pay in full or had trouble paying, and the items took much space in the warehouses. The last time a store allowed layaway was when I was pregnant with my daughter and couldn't afford a stroller up front. I paid it off with each paycheck :). It helped me save money for other necessities at the time and I'm grateful that there weren't additional charges for them to hold my product, but there are many people who can't keep up with payments.

There is an entire side of the financial world that preys on people after bankruptcy and with bad credit. 28% interest on car loans, 32% on personal loans, just the standard credit card interest rates. It’s actually quite easy to get credit right out of bankruptcy. You want to know who the leeches of society are, most of them are in finance.
IMO she is wasting her time with these two because shopping addiction is like other addictions: therapy is needed to get at the root cause and begin the healing. These two nudnicks really make me angry bc bankruptcy is a way of life for them and they are so entitled they don't get that this practice hurts the people who sold them things because they will never recover the full purchase price. I could tell the husband was angry about some telling him how to manage his money. In what world does he live that he thinks he is managing his money? Kids in my family get baptized at three weeks of age, part of the normal Mass, no extra charge. The first baby gets a party, but subsequent children do not get a party.
I did a little cost breakdown fo someone asking the same about baptism cost. 100$ Church donation. 100$ christening gown and booties. 100-200 $ meal (home/restaurant) for guests 50-100$ Baby ring/necklace or bible for baby 50-75$ cake Costs can add quickly! 🥰
The thing I've noticed about these impulse buys mainly with women is that they don't even wear the things they buy just marvel at them. If they'd spend at least 20% of what they spend on shopping on their self maintenance and not look like a cabbage patch doll maybe it would have been worth it.
I love watching these programmes to see all the stuff they shopped for is obsolete and I can remind myself it is the same with what we're buying today!

In my last relatonship, we could argue about almost anything but the one thing we didn't fight about was money unless it was over who would pay when we went out - I'd say it was my turn and he'd say, no it's my turn. This show was originally aired in the early-2000's so I just hate to think where these two people are now with the cost of living the way it is in 2024.

Maybe she looks after her sister after school and does other things to help out at home to a point where she doesn’t have time for a job. I had my first waitressing job at 13 and worked after school all through high school. I did that because I only got $5/week for allowance. I was so envious of kids that got 10x what I did and didn’t lift a finger for it.

And all that money for a Christening? I’m Catholic and I do not understand all the fuss and expense associated with that, First Communion or Confirmation. Just another money maker for the Church. The point of baptism is to ensure the baby will go straight to heaven, having been cleansed of original sin. So why do people wait weeks or months for the ceremony? Wouldn’t you think it should be done ASAP after the birth?

I filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy 2 1/2 years ago. I had a car that was repossessed. I still owed $16,000 after it was sold at auction and the bank sued me. They were awarded a civil judgment which is enforceable for 20 years in the U.S. They can also garnish wages through the courts. It reached a point where I owed just over $20,000 due to fees and late charges and they were about to start taking $1,000/month that I absolutely couldn’t afford to lose.
Since then, my husband and I live debt free. No credit cards and our 2 vehicles are old but they’re paid for. We just repair the cars as needed. We’re currently saving to buy our first home.
The bankruptcy was a huge lesson and something I never want to go through again. I don’t understand how people end up having to file bankruptcy multiple times.

@ I “suddenly” (it took 6 months) got out of debt by filling chapter 7 bankruptcy. Along with the civil judgment, all other debts were included and wiped out. It’s also something I never want to do again and have kept myself debt free.

Dave Ramsey became our “friend” about 8 years ago. We paid off all credit cards. We kept one credit card and our debit cards. I track EVERY debit card purchase (yes, I balance the checkbook). If the credit card balance exceeds $500, I get anxious, even though I know we have the money to pay the balance. My Honda is 16 years old, and my husband’s car is 14 years old. We have maintained the cars, and have saved so we have cash to pay for future car purchases. Only debt we have is our mortgage, but pay extra and will pay off our mortgage in 7 years instead of the amortized 12 years. I use to lie awake at night trying to figure out how we were going to pay our $20K credit card/student loan debt. I sleep well now!! It was not easy, but sooooo worth it! BTW… our combined income is $80K.

As a single woman I have multiple digital accounts (I call them jars) for several goals, which works perfectly, so one for your kids is a great idea!

My kids each got a bank account and a debit card at seven years old. I think this was the minimum age. The account was a kids account with limited options. For example, they could only spend €25 a week with their card. The limitations changed as they aged. For personal reasons, they also had a mobile phone at the same age, so they have always used that to see their account.
They’re now 17 and 15 and they also have an investment account that they manage themselves - I still supervise though.
I opened my children savings accounts when they were babies, I put money in every week. It doesn’t have to be a lot, £10 a week quickly adds up. It will give them a little cushion. I have always treated their savings as a bill, so it’s something I commit to pay regardless.
A family of 4 only spent $100 jar money for 3 weeks? I highly doubt it. I think their family kicked in some funds or food.

My neighbor filed bankruptcy, then got married. She’s maxed out all those cards and actually was crying to me about how they don’t have money and they may lose their home. I didn’t say it but was thinking “oh well, you should’ve learned when you filed bankruptcy 5 years ago!”
And 3-4 years ago I was trying to help her with understanding debt and getting a budget in place and she just laughed at me. 😮🙄

But if it’s merely due to retail therapy, luxury travel, spa visits, etc, it should not be legal to just get it wiped away… I mean, why don’t we all just start enjoying life, spend like there is no tomorrow and then let others bail us out… I know folks driving new suburban, living in large homes, who file just to get the credit card debt go away. They get to keep their car, house and just let us pay for basically their little splurges
@@reviewsbygen5591 in my case, I was recklessly spending because I had undiagnosed Borderline Personality Disorder and that is one of the manifestations of it. I was maybe $25,000 in debt so it wasn’t as bad as some people but my car was repossessed and my credit cards all went to collections because I couldn’t keep a job due to my disorder. I was finally diagnosed in 2019 and got a therapist, and my husband also helped me a lot. Now 4 years later I have built my credit back up to 700, got two credit cards and I pay off whatever I put on it before the interest accrues.

They seem to lack self control - not just with money but with food also as they're both grossly overweight. Then they decide to bring children into this mess. This is why stores in my area quit doing layaway. People wouldn't pay in full or had trouble paying, and the items took much space in the warehouses. The last time a store allowed layaway was when I was pregnant with my daughter and couldn't afford a stroller up front. I paid it off with each paycheck :). It helped me save money for other necessities at the time and I'm grateful that there weren't additional charges for them to hold my product, but there are many people who can't keep up with payments.

There is an entire side of the financial world that preys on people after bankruptcy and with bad credit. 28% interest on car loans, 32% on personal loans, just the standard credit card interest rates. It’s actually quite easy to get credit right out of bankruptcy. You want to know who the leeches of society are, most of them are in finance.
IMO she is wasting her time with these two because shopping addiction is like other addictions: therapy is needed to get at the root cause and begin the healing. These two nudnicks really make me angry bc bankruptcy is a way of life for them and they are so entitled they don't get that this practice hurts the people who sold them things because they will never recover the full purchase price. In my last relatonship, we could argue about almost anything but the one thing we didn't fight about was money unless it was over who would pay when we went out - I'd say it was my turn and he'd say, no it's my turn. This show was originally aired in the early-2000's so I just hate to think where these two people are now with the cost of living the way it is in 2024.

Maybe she looks after her sister after school and does other things to help out at home to a point where she doesn’t have time for a job. Maybe they’ve just been paying for whatever she wants whenever she wants it and the $80/mth is actually cheaper. Probably not but maybe. Either way, it’s a step in the right direction. I had my first waitressing job at 13 and worked after school all through high school. I did that because I only got $5/week for allowance. I was so envious of kids that got 10x what I did and didn’t lift a finger for it.

Once you file bankruptcy, you’re not legally required to pay those bills anymore so they’re wiped off and then flush with cash again that’s why they keep doing it and people will give them credit and absolutely astronomical rates because they have disposable income because those other bills have been written off due to bankruptcy

Ugh! These two. They annoyed me when I first saw their episode, and time hasn’t made them any more likeable. Who thinks filing for bankruptcy is funny? Who would laugh when facing it a second time? And all that money for a Christening? I’m Catholic and I do not understand all the fuss and expense associated with that, First Communion or Confirmation. Just another money maker for the Church. The point of baptism is to ensure the baby will go straight to heaven, having been cleansed of original sin. So why do people wait weeks or months for the ceremony? Wouldn’t you think it should be done ASAP after the birth?

15-20 years ago - did we not use online banking/Quicken? The enormous discrepancies on what they think they spend vs what they actually spend....that seems hard to imagine now.
I was using Quicken 2009 back then and still do! It's very easy to see how much I spend in each category.
