Her mother is a saint. She gave 250k and co-sign for 40k, and now she is responsible if they don’t pay the extra debt they are consolidating. I really hope they changed and appreciate her help instead of literally living off her.
Edit: the conclusion the guy made pisses me off, he doesn’t acknowledge his MIL help them BIG time. So arrogant and he is the source of the problem. He takes advantage of his wife’s non confrontational nature and the love of his MIL to her daughter. Awful character.

I got married at the courthouse when I was 19 and I was wearing a cute dress i found at walmart. My husband got my engagement ring for 1k dollars which is an adorable small diamond heart. Well weve been married 16 years now, big weddings do not equal good marriages

Meanwhile my cousins parents spent 30k on her wedding and she was divorced within five years 😬 this was in the early 2000s when 30k was a lot more too.

In the LGBT community, Gyms are synonomous. On Queer As Folk (US), the fellows hang out and exercise. NSF & Bank Fees are a mess. When I use my Credit Card at a Machine, I get charged $3.50 so what I do is if I see I have extra it goes towards that. Now Smoking costs so much money. Also after The Gym, many like to go to a restaurant/bar/cafe to eat and that chops your salary. After you get your cocktail, meal, and dessert you pay at least $75.00 on the bill.

I bought a pretty white dress at the army barracks thrift store. It was marked $7.00 but when I got to the register, it rang up at $3.50! My mom's best friend added accessories to the dress and made me a veil to match. My husband's boss let us use their winter home in Florida for a week and gave us money for the airfare as a wedding gift. My husband's mom bought him a 2nd hand suit and a friend of my mom's made the cake for us as a gift. My husband's brother was the photographer and developed the photos as a gift. The only thing we paid full price for was the flowers. Start to finish, our wedding and fire hall reception was $600 in 1978. Everything was paid for by the time of the wedding. We just celebrated our 46th anniversary! Several of our friends spent $$$ on their weddings and are now divorced.

Depends on the locality / state /Province. In some places if you care for X number of kids or less, then you don't need licensing. In other places you pay to be 'inspected' when you first open up, which can be a couple hundred. Sometimes they require a certification from say the Red Cross that you know CPR. A major thing these folks forget to do -- buy insurance. Most homeowners insurance won't cover an at-home day care for negligence or damages. There are always start up costs with any business, but the bar is set relatively low, especially since there is such a great demand for child care in certain areas. Hard to pass alot of regulations for at-home child care when women have been taking care of 4-8 children for the last 5,000 years of civilization.

I don't know where Gail gets her numbers from. $3600/year invested at 5% for 35 years is nowhere near $600,000. You'd need an average annual return of around 7.5% to grow $3600/year to $600K.

So, I plugged the numbers into a compound interest calculator. $3600/year (at $300/mo) invested at 5% for 35 years, compounded quarterly, will net a bit over $361,000, but compounded annually it's a bit over $350k. My guess is she also added in the value of the house, which was at the time $250,000 - when put together with the $350k, you get about $600,000, and if they hung on through the bubbles, that house is probably worth a heck of a lot more now.

I was born 11 months after him. I was tiny and wasn't responding the way the doctors wanted. They considered me a failure to thrive and actually sent me home to die. The doctor thought it would be best for my mom if I died at home. My parents didn't give up on me. Here I am soon to be 55 years old.

@@Ravenousyouth Agree with you there. Women's work is severely underappreciated and underpaid when it fulfills the biggest needs in society: teaching and safeguarding children (teachers/social workers) as well as improving/maintaining physical and mental health (nurses/counselors/related service providers). These professions are also notorious for guilt tripping workers (predominantly women) into working more for no additional compensation because it's for the kids/sick/etc. No wonder burnout is so rampant in those fields and there are so many shortages. Emotional labor is still labor and is the most beneficial to society's wellbeing and should be treated as such.

Sometimes, it’s eye-opening 😮😮to watch people on money-focused shows who struggle with basic financial skills, often ending up with significant debt. These shows can really highlight how poor financial habits and a lack of responsibility can impact both personal / physical health and attitudes. Hopefully, they’ll realize the importance of making better choices, practicing self-discipline, and taking steps to improve their well-being and financial outlook. It’s a reminder for everyone about the value of financial literacy, resilience, and accountability.
