    Gail came into my store in Guelph, Ontario (I think she lives there) about 8 years ago. I was up on a ladder painting over a patch I’d done on a wall. It wasn’t until after I’d come down to say hello that I recognized her. She smiled at me and asked why I’m up the ladder doing this kind of thing? I smiled back bigger and said “no money”. She laughed. She’s wonderful.

    I am loving Canadian reality shows they are less dramatic than Americans ones. If this was an American show they would be an extra 30 minutes of shouting, useless arguments about fake divorces etc. This is refreshing no reality TV fluff just some calm people seeking for genuine help and a host who is willing to help.

    How do you get married and not review your financial situation before hand? All of my friends had this discussion, I remember my one girlfriend told her fiance he had to get out of debt and save $5,000 before they could set the date. That made so much sense, he had to get control of his finances and it started the relationship off on the right foot. She wasn't saying he needed to make a fortune, or that she wanted him for his money, but she wanted it to be on an equal footing and move forward together.

    The trick to ceilings is to use 2.5 inch angled brush and stay down about an eight of an inch from the ceiling on the first coat. On the second coat your brush will slide so smoothly and you can push that paint right up to the ceiling for a nice smooth line

Got a pack of 5 in a Euro shop. It's like the dollar store on your side of the Atlantic. Have no debts. At the risk of being rude, I have to ask. Wouldn't it be better to pay off your mortgage? With the interest saved, you'd have more for savings, indulgences or charity.

      Here in Canada a house is now over $1million in most cities. Life is not the same as it was 55 years ago. My parents bought their house in Victoria, BC for 11K in 1971. Today it would be at least $1.5 million (and the house is bulldozer bait - nothing special at all). My mom didn't have to work, they had 5 kids, new cars (zero debt ever). Mortgage was paid off by about 1977. That life just doesn't exist anymore.

    As someone living in Europe it blows my mind how many North Americans just choose to not pay for things, or they "fall behind" because they forget. Where I live most of these things are automatic and having to manually dispatch money for things like mortgages just isn't a thing.
    And how people get away with just not paying their taxes for years on end is mindblowing. Again, where I live, that is very close to being literally impossible because tax from most jobs is handled at source. Even if you have to handle your own taxes for whatever reason, you will not get away with ignoring it for years - a few months at most before you start being prosecuted. If you've hired an accountant they will also be up your back passage about it.

    If they were truly smart, they waited until all their debts were paid off and they had at least a full year of savings before even thinking about adding a kid into their issues. Having children doesn't solve any problems, and they only severely increase financial ones if the couple is already in distress.

    It’s so ridiculous for a young couple like this to be using supplements at all. Your body absorbs so little of the actual supplement that it’s just a waste of money. Get your nutrition from actual food, there should be plenty of options even in Canada. One thing I would suggest supplementing would be vitamin D since you are so far north the sun doesn’t provide much up there. But that should be a cheap option.

    • @NotAFanOfHandles
      @NotAFanOfHandles 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@prg4647 It was *definitely* a thing back then but not every bank offered it. Also, not everyone knew about auto payment, and many times people who knew about it would refuse to use it because they were afraid of overdrafts because they would neglect to reserve some money in their account for the payment. That's why I would recommend getting an online only bank account specifically to hold bill/mortgage money: they tend to have NO fees associated with them and even the free checking accounts usually net you some interest back.

    Just because the lender tells you you can afford x amount on a mortgage DOESNT mean you actually SPEND that much. JFC. We bought a little over 1600 sq ft 3 bedroom 2 bath house with zero HOA fee. Our mortgage is less than 410 a month which we overpay on each and every month ever since the first payment was due in early summer of 21, knocking YEARS off the life of the mortgage, paying far more towards principal than interest which takes MANY YEARS to do just making the agreed upon payments. We also have the double homestead exemption, once we claimed it our property taxes were cut almost in half.

    This show could be so much better. Sorry but the woman who tries to help is just missing the mark or maybe the information that would really put the show in a good place isn't able to be shared. I think her suggestions are weak. The $5000 is a drop in the bucket to what most of these people need, not much of a reward. But getting the stress out of your life is the real reward so I guess it isn't really that little prize that makes going on the show worth it anyway.

    • @meggy0
      @meggy0 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This was filmed around 2010 so things are slightly different now, but I think he suggestions are good and realistic. Bot giving them loads of money is good. They need to work out how to take care of themselves, otherwise they're just going to blow through that money anyway and go back into debt.
