      You know in all honesty if this show was some kind of Scooby Parody show with characters names changing like making Fred-Frank, Daphne-Stephanie, Velma-Venessa and Shaggy-Scruffy, and Scooby-Sheppard it would've worked a lot better.

    I still can't believe they made Velma the opposite of what her actual personality used to be. She was characterized as being a bit shy and socially awkward, especially around people she admired or felt intimidated by. Here, she obnoxiously proclaims to each character that they are shallow and dumber than her right to their face. It's not charming or done in a clever way, it's annoying and ironically lacks self-awareness.

      Apparently Velma sorta had that attitude in mystery Inc too? (I’m just going off what the video said, I never watched the show for myself.) but the difference there was that those traits from Velma were portrayed as flaws, while this show seems like it’s glorifying them so far.

      @@train4292 she sorta had that attitude only around the things that interested her. Mystery Incorporated had mature themes but were handled BETTER than Velma did. While it kept the "monster of the day" formula Scooby Doo is known for, it also added a narrative where the mysteries serve as puzzle pieces to a storyline centered around past events of Crystal Cove and the Mystery Inc, along with other characters develop from these experiences. For example, the mystery behind the original Mystery Gang, Fred's desire to find the truth about his birth parents, Shaggy's relationship with Velma and Scooby, etc.

      They did meta comentary and such better too- Mystery Incorporated both plays straight and lampoons the whole basis of Scooby do, the fact that EVERY CRIMINAL tries to scare people away by pretending to be a monster. I mean it makes sense in the context of discouraging witnesses while simultaneously making them less credible, but it being the idea EVERY criminal came up with is weird when you think about it, and Mystery incorporated had so much fun with that idea. It was part of the larger mystery, plenty of the individual monsters and criminals had their weird justifications for the ruse, and they had so many running gags with it, mainly how Everyone seemed to completely buy that they were real until the gang proved otherwise. Heck even members of the gang treated the monsters like they were real- Velma meets a mermaid in her bath tub and treats her like the real thing and a reliable witness (she explicitly doned the costume in order to inform on criminals dressing like bipedal fish people) and Everyone treated an Orc biker gang as the real thing when they were obviously people in costume (it wasn't even a crime thing, there was one of them that was commiting crime, but the overall group were just bikers that like dressing up as orcs to further distance themselves from their nerdy normal lives).
      Mystery incorporated played everything about Scooby do to the hilt, and played it all for laughs the whole time, good naturedly.

    The reason why people are so against "race swapping" is beyond the race itself, it's because about 99% of the time it points to the writers priorities and mindset, which usually easily predictably bad.
    The only time when "representation" is done right is when the charecter is written well and just happens to be in the "representation" group, when the character's "representation" is front and centered it always end bad, because instead of being a charecter they become a vehicle for "representation"
    So TLDR it is transparently obvious that the writers priorities are in the wrong place when that happens.

      This applies to race, gender, sexuality, or any other surface level trait or minority. In Mystery Incorporated, Velma was White, Straight, and yet those weren't her defining traits. She had so much more going for her, and we the fans, loved it. In her new incarnation, her defining traits are those surface level identifiers, and it's done for the sake of representation of those traits. They did the same thing for all the characters, just hyper defining surface level stereotypes for representation, instead of expanding on what made the original characters so good.

    I find it funny how writers think the only way to make a cartoon more adult is by adding blood and gore, showing sexual imagery, and having characters swear like sailors nonstop as if that substitutes for a good story…
    Invincible did the “cartoon for adults” idea very well. It draws you in like it’s another Justice league clone, and just when you think it’s going to be another generic superhero story, you get the horrifying bloodbath that is the end of the first episode, perfectly setting the tension, tone, and mystery for the rest of the series. Meanwhile, the series shows us the weight and consequence of the violence instead of it being just for show, knows how to use pervasive language sparingly, and is at its core about a son trying to find his place in life while unraveling the mystery around his father’s origins and even intentions, with a bunch of fun and interesting side characters (except Amber. Fuck Amber). Is it perfect? Not 100%, but it respects the source while showing you don’t need to resort to tasteless tactics to tell a compelling adult cartoon story.

    Daphne > Pressure of having to be "The Perfect schoolgirl" while also maintening her business, showing she's searching for a way to indentify herself not by just her parents.
    Norville > Pressure of living an unreciprocated love and doubting his "appeal", not by the whole Beta Male angle, but in the fact he accepts that he's not loved back and move along with life.
    Fred > Pressure of both being socially inepte because he's the Rich Kid with a "problematic education", but also socially Rejected because he's the "White Rich Kid" and he wants to separate himself from that picture.

    the fact that they’re all meant to be, like, 15 and getting into all these situations involving drugs and sex (even with Fred’s “tiny duck” being some kind of essential fact about his character) really rubs me the wrong way. I’m not saying that teenagers in real life as old as these characters HAVEN’T gotten into these situations, but it’s also not really something that should be normalized - they’re minors, and the fact that a bunch of adults are like “haha watch all these young teenagers get into WACKY ADULT SITUATIONS involving SEX and ALCOHOL and DRUGS” just feels uncomfortable.

    Honestly, so far the one good thing I've seen in this show is Velma's missing mom backstory and her anxiety/panic attacks, it's a really interesting idea of having one of the mystery gang try to solve a mystery in their youth which indirectly lead to a mysterious tragedy, so they don't do mystery solving until a mystery inevitably finds them and they become determined to solve the new mystery as well as finding the truth about the past tragedy, all while dealing with anxiety and fear of mystery solving due to the tragedy that they feel is their fault, but the show completely missed that golden opportunity by focusing on it's meta humor and raunchiness with characters who are such complete jerks that I honestly would rather see them get killed off then solve the mystery

And to my surprise, this has worked before. Such as Nick Fury from Marvel where in the comics he was white but they changed him to black in some cartoons and movies. It is just nowadays that when we see a character race swapped our minds point to it going to be a bad show. That's due because of writers not knowing how to write a good story or even a good joke.

    Race-swaping Velma and Shaggy to make them have more social pressures could be amazing like the fact that Asian descendents (Indians, Chinese and other from those partes) have to be intelligent because of the stereotypical idea and not only because she is truly smart leading to her sometimes acting holier than thou to mask the moments she doesn't know the answer or is out smarted by someone how should be less smart and Shaggy having a thing with drugs because of those stereotypes or a drug addict in his family leading him to have high levels of anxiety and/or depression because of it leading him to eat a lot but then whe discover that binging in food too much to the point of eating this he should not be(like scooby snacks) is making him sick and to take care of himself and not feel alone he could find Scooby a dog that was genetically modified to eat like humans and also talk that would be terminate since he was a "failed project" Shaggy could make him his service dog that would eat a big half of his food and help in mental breakdown moments and in very hard food binges.....WHY THE HELL THEY DIDN'T THINK ABOU ALL OF THAT???

    Being black (although I'm bi-racial, but whatever), the best representation is getting awesome characters that are black. Whether they're portrayed as badass, successful, caring or wholesome. That's representation. Not slapping brown paint on already existing, previously white characters.
    Same thing with the little mermaid, instead of remaking it with different actors, why not just make a new classic, that happens to have black characters.

      I get ur point and I used to agree with you on "no point in making the little mermaid black". But now I think they chose the best looking actor for the role. When it comes to actors, I think it's a lot different. So long as you can play the role well, it doesn't matter. Halle Bailey (the actor for the little mermaid movie) is gorgeous in an ethereal/mystical way, which to me is very fitting for a mermaid. She also has a beautiful voice fit for the mystical nature of a mermaid, too.

      I don't get the Little Mermaid hate. They just hired an actor who was black, how is that bad? They did the same for Nick Fury and no one gave a shit, mostly because Samuel L. Fucking Jackson, but still.
      Why can't it be they remade the Little Mermaid, but just happened to hire a black actress? They supposedly hired the best person for the job, they thought she was good and the casting director even said that he liked her singing voice and that's why they chose her.
      It's not hard leap to make that that is why she's the actress for this and not some "Oh they black washed a character for forced diversity's sake.", as well as a lot of racism.

      @@seventeenseventythirteen7465 I am not black but im a writer and I'm gonna answer this because this is my opinion and many others.
      Little mermaid making Ariel black in many people's opinion is disney race baiting, Like velma is race baiting. it adds nothing to the story, conflict etc, but they made her black for brownie points.
      Kinda like how disney world+parks did all that pro lgbtq+ merch and food for pride month and took it immediately down after pride month was over. it's a blatant money grab and obvious they aren't making their characters diverse for the RIGHT reasons.
      It makes POC feel like an object/ token that companies like disney can just use to their advantage to get their viewers back with a crappy remake that has no soul or actual passion. Yes it's paying a black actress, but disney isn't going to outright say they hired that person for that that reason, they'd get back lash if they were being direct. Why are you hiring a black actress to play this role in your remake when you could just as easily and HAVE made diverse original movies that do not focus on the characters race, more so their culture and giving their culture representation.
      tldr: Imagine being used as a free money token over and over again VS actually having black characters and actors made+hired for an original kick ass story that has more substance and relevance then a remake of a movie that was made in the 80s...can ya see why that's a tad insulting?

Very few, but they're still _there._ Like Velma's hallucinations and her relationship with her mother, or the dynamic between her and Daphne, or hell even a few actually good jokes could have been made about Norville not being weed like the audience would have expected. There are all pretty need concepts (even if one of them is just joke) that I think would be really cool to see them executed well. Honestly, I wouldn't even mind the gang's personality changes if they weren't written as being insufferable (well, except for Norville/Shaggy). She wants to use everyone from the crew’s feelings for her. Nervil is smart and Daphne can get her whatever she needs inside of the police station. They both like her, she knows that, but she doesn’t like them back. So instead of having that conversation with them she decides to lead them both on, instead. Notice how the second Daphne makes her feelings obvious, Velma creates the whole falling on top of Daphne scene, and it looks like she did it on purpose.
    She wants Fred to like her so she can use him to her advantage to. She probably wants to use him for his money.
    I can see her jumping around between all of them (having a on and off relationship With the 3) while constantly asking the 3 for stuff.

It’s a one way swing of either treating minorities like dirt or putting them on a pedestal, we can’t just be treated like normal people even in fiction apparently.

    I think the issue with raceswapping is that it is so often done to avoid having good writing and just co-opt fans from an already successful IP, and if you put in the effort and have good writing why warp an already existing character to fit your story rather than make one that fits in a more 'natural' way.

    • @AspireGMD
      @AspireGMD 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, the issue with race-swapping is disgusting liberal corporations using minorities as nothing but a tool to boost their own image, treating black people as just a "trendy minority to profit off of." Liberal corporations are a cancer to everyone and yet they get praised by literally committing blatant racism. They lazily race-swapped velma as they don't have to put in any effort and still profit, which is what most liberal corporations will do, the bare minimum.

      What I find odd is that it's only ok when the characters are white but imagine if I race-swapped a well-established black character like the Proud family and made them white if be canceled so fast. When they changed Velma it was considered a nice change but if I race-swapped penny and her family is get called a racist.

    • @sarafontanini7051
      @sarafontanini7051 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it can also lead to it feeling disingenuine and forced and only for aesthetics, often their race being changed is only for level surface and shallow cliches or jsut to say they have diversity without having it add to the character or story.
      For example Fan4stic made Johnny Storm black....but NOT His sister, who remains white (because can't have the smart white lead fall in love with a black gal am I right?). THis COULDhave lead to something interesting like questions about why they're diferent races and how this affects their rleationship or their personal lives and such...but nope. Purely cosmetic.
      I'm not against idea of race swapping inherently, but only if its done well and with good intentions, rather than "well the showrunner is non-white so why not make the character she voices the same"

    • @onemoreweirdo207
      @onemoreweirdo207 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also often it's just... cheap. You are getting an already established character instead of creating your own, often turning them into a horrible character, which goes to shpow that the reason they did it is because they are incapable of coming up ith character from scratch.
      Which is one part I will disagree with the video, if you wanna do representation, make original characters. Changing Shaggy to be that guy for example at least isn't that bad, because he's practically a completely different guy. Velma on the other hand is Velma but darker and also an asshole for some reason.
      Like sure, if you're making a fan-fic or fanart I don't give a shit how you draw/write the characters, but that's supposed to be somewhat official, yet it feels like a teen's fanfic.

      @strangevol5264 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      the issue is not the race swapping but rather the creator's own projection onto the show, turning it into something like her other stories, which contain characters just like the velma depicted in this show. you're all looking over that aspect.

That she knows that the world has horrible people in if but she also knows that there are good people in it as well. So in the end she hopes that good will win even if it's not likely. She had hope while being smart.

    I think I get it, or at least, I get what they are trying to do. This is supposed to be an origin story for the gang, so they are actively starting the characters at flawed points so that they can mold them into what they should become by the end of the season, the problem is the starting characters are so unlikable that we as an audience don't want to stay for the journey.
    Like, I swear, they are going to have Fred learn that "Hey Velma is smart and woman actually have value" and that magically coinciding with a pan shot to the fact Fred finally starts growing his big boy hair, with someone literally pointing it out and actually calling it "big boy hair". Also, that in the final episode when the gang is all together, the last line of the season will literally be something like " ... maybe we should get a dog" like ha ha it's supposed to be funny! (But it's not)

    The end of this video is... actually some good arguments potentially in the show's favor.
    I don't have faith that the creators are at all interested in improving - if anything, I predict that they'll just double down on their weaknesses out of spite instead of playing to their strengths because that's how this pattern typically goes - but... the seeds of a good show are _there,_ but doomed, and that's pretty tragic.

    3:44 I think rick and morty exemplifies that it’s not the expectation of cartoon sitcoms to not be self aware, but the pacing of it in relation to other types of jokes. We all know at least once per episode, though likely more often, there will be a lot of snarky self analyzing jokes, most often from rick. It doesn’t harm the show’s comedic flow because it’s spread between other kinds of jokes. It doesn’t go all in on variations on the exact same thing. It’s not the lack of expectation, but the lack of variety which makes it repetitive and boring
