It's not time for any of this EV mandate garbage. In the states our infrastructure can barely handle the common air-conditioning use in the summer. You expect me to believe it's gonna handle millions of new EVs? While we're closing rather than modernizing nuclear plants? Irrational behavior.

Although I wish it could've stayed, the reality is that its days were numbered. It costs more to manufacture, Ram will have to further comply with the 2025 emissions standard, the Hurricane is waiting in the balance with more HP and Torque, and yes, the BEV will be ready in a year.
Factoring in $5/gal diesel and more maintenance requirements, it kinda makes sense. GM can keep the Duramax because they have so many more cars and electrics to offset the emissions miss of the diesel. It is sad to see the Ecodiesel, which started the modern small diesel wars nearly a decade ago, go away.

  • @QuiltedQuiver
    @QuiltedQuiver 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

I believe the reason why RAM is discontinuing the eco diesel is because the EPA is introducing stricter emission standards for Diesel engines in 2024 and the eco diesel does not meet those standards. They most likely could not justify the redesign costs based off of past sales numbers. The new regulations is why GM redesigned their 3.0 for 2023. They (GM) probably sell much more 3.0 diesels so their bean counters could justify the redesign costs.

The DEF system is the biggest issue with Ecodiesel failures. The EGR coolers leaking and Turbos are common problems. People who own these Ecodiesel vehicles are learning they are short term. The dealerships don’t have the proper tech support to properly maintain them. You call a dealership for service, you might be stuck waiting for them to hire a diesel mechanic to work that day to try and fix the problem.
In Canada, people have tuned their Ecodiesels to shut off the EGR to run more efficiently. Here in the US the EPA has gone after everyone who modified and tuned their Ecodiesel.

At times with these different firmwares I’d get 31-35 miles per gallon other ones mileage would drop to 15-18 miles per gallon. The worst issue was the huge clouds of smoke that would come out from under the engine after driving at highway speeds, stop at the end of exit ramp, at times cloud would engulf vehicle other times it wouldn’t be that bad, but still concerning. Government regulations aren't making our trucks more efficient or ecological. When the free market finds a solution, government almost always makes things worse, even when they claim they opposite. In the 1980s, trucks were mostly gas, and they were horribly inefficient, often getting single digit mpg around town and low teens on the highway, and much of their inefficacy was explained by horrible government mandated emissions controls that zapped them of their efficiency.
Thankfully, the brilliant free market found the solution in diesels. If people remember, you could get a Cummins 12v, which could get 25-30mpg on the highway, double what the equivalent government gas trucks could get. But now, that can't be built anymore, because it's too "dirty" and "wasteful", according government regulators.
Did we actually gain anything from any of this? No, but the market is always advancing. The Ecodiesel was the same solution to government fabricated problems, but for the lighter duty truck segment. You could get 30 mpg out of a full size truck, even with all the ridiculous after treatment systems that government forces on people. It was refined and powerful, and for people who did lots of driving, it would make tons of economic sense, because the efficiency was so good. The engine wasn't perfect, but it was a marvelous piece of engineering that met the market's demands, something government couldn't allow.
Well, government is still thinking otherwise and is now titling the scales to EVs, away from ICE engines entirely. Do people think that'll satisfy unaccountable government regulators? I doubt that. If they've been allowed this power for decades, well, what makes anyone think they just give that up? They'll have nothing better to do with themselves. They'll just make up some other issue, to remain relevant and in control. You can already see how it's shaping up for us here in California, with our perpetual lack of reliable electricity. What's to stop them from telling us how big our batteries could be, or how much we can charge them, when we can charge them? Nothing, nothing at all is going to satisfy them. We will forever be facing problems that government puts in front of us, and it will continue to pretend it has solutions to the problems it puts in front of us.
I can already see the headlines for 2035... "EVs not as clean as once thought"... "Government to set caps for charging of EVs"... "Toxins found in drinking water near Lithium recycling facility"..."Government to introduce EV battery disposal tax, form new oversight body"..."Low-frequency fields around EV batteries cause cancer for riders"..."Government to mandate new battery tech by 2040"...

CAFE requires cars to have a fuel efficiency base on the square footage of their wheelbase, so a mid sized truck that gets 22mpg is actually worse according to regulations than a full sized truck that gets 18mpg

    • @AkioWasRight
      @AkioWasRight 2 ปีที่แล้ว

@@pizzasaurolophus Yes, and that's not just true with mid-size trucks, that's just true in general. Due to CAFE, it's cheaper to make a vehicle larger, fitting it into a larger "footprint, than it is to make it more efficient, even if it lowers the overall fuel economy.
That also partly explains why "light trucks" outsell passenger cars 3-1. People say it's market demand. In reality, it's market demand based on government order.

I have ‘22 Gladiator WILLYS EcoDiesel on it’s way from the L48 to Interior Alaska. I bought it from a dealership and got a fair deal. Diesel is still above $5 a gallon at most fuel stations. Before too long the price of it will drop. I had a ‘18 Ram 3500 and experienced issues with the DEF pump and ended up selling the truck. I hopeful I do not experience any issues with this diesel but if I do well now that it will be harder to get them it may have just made my truck worth a bit more.
It’s unfortunate the direction we’re heading in regards to electric vehicles with charging times being what they are and the lack of charging stations throughout the US. Additionally, the cost to replace the battery right now is extraordinarily expensive, you’re better off buying a new vehicle. I have a hunch that oil companies are working with auto manufacturers behind the scenes and that the amount of oil reserves is dwindling much faster than expected/ predicted and we need a viable replacement.

But I VERY stongly feel we (as a country) "have put the cart before the horse" as we say. Our power grid is NOT ready for this! We need to build a MUCH more robust power grid FIRST.......THEN start pushing (no pun intended) electric vehicles down the consumers throats.

Turbo engines can now get close to diesel torque numbers, with the only thing still in there favor being range. The cost/mile for the average consumer is hard to justify the higher initial cost and higher maintenance/fuel costs. Also Ram understands that consumers want options, but there is a point where too many options leads to manufacturing inefficiency.

Sandy Munro said in one of their videos that GM invested $1B on the L6 Duramax and criticized them for the timing as to whether there would be long enough production life to justify the cost, while transitioning to electric propulsion. This was before they released the updated version. I guess they will make it available widely in the future to amortize the development cost, perhaps to the military, as happened with the 6.2L V8 diesel used in the Hummer military vehicles. This would guarantee a long production life, regardless of civilian usage.
Diesel in any non-commercial light duty or passenger vehicle is dead in a city environmental. The switch to electric will be almost total, regardless of infrastructure growing pains.

Thanks for the video guys. Yeah I agree it's sad to see the diesel go, but in reality, for 1500 series trucks as volume leaders I wonder what the up-take is now. My brother had a 2016 - 2500 that got caught up in the regs and general lack of reliability and he said "no" to a Ram when it was time for a new heavy-duty (he went with Ford). I believe this was a simple case of Stellantis allocating development $$ and decided that this engine was not worth the cost given the issues and reputation in the market.

i was watching a car show a few years ago they were talking to an italian engineer about the diesel, could hardly understand him talking how great it was.another interviewer asked it was fca at the time why they didnt ask cummins to make one for them since they made the 6.7 it was said the 3.0 lire they already had made in italy fit perfect in the truck,so why make a new one.

And there's this...remember the 5.0 V8 Cummins diesel that Nissan had in the Titan XD a few years ago?
It was meant for Dodge/Ram 1500s back in the day. After FCA bought Chrysler, they (FCA) had second thoughts and introduced the Italian 3.0 V6 diesel instead.

I love my 22 eco diesel. Its an amazing machine 30 mug on the hiway. If they do away with the diesel why can't they use a small motor to charge the electric ram. It can take up to 45 minutes to power the electric engine but a small engine to power the electric makes more sense.

Now I would absolutely NOT purchase a 3.0 eco diesel at this time for 2 reasons:
1: finding a future qualified mechanic to service the very specialized eco diesel
2: Parts. There are many updated parts, some very recent, but supply of those parts are very limited to the supply chain shortages and good luck finding parts in the future now that the eco diesel is being canceled!
Big mistake RAM. Another WOKE company.

Two people I know have resorted to lemon law buybacks for their new GM diesel trucks, which seems to fall in line with the adage that older diesels, sans the emissions equipment, were night and day superior to modern ones. I owned one diesel, a VW, and it was running just fine at 500k miles, but there’s no compelling reason to buy another diesel given the laughable fuel cost penalty. Meanwhile my 20 year old Ford gas pickup is tough as an anvil.

The comment of about ram discontinuing the eco-diesel because of a future EV truck is ridiculous. My coworker bought a Ford lightning with the extended range battery. He got 287 miles on one charge from full to empty which you’re not supposed to do with an electric vehicle. He towed his trailer and had to stop and charge in just 127 miles. If you need a truck around town I’m OK with that but if you need a truck to tow a trailer, you need a diesel.

The reason Ford stoped was because there 3.0 diesel came from a Jag and is greatly outdated. Ram's 3.0 was designed for a Cadillac Europe. Ram and Ford do not want to spend the money to keep up with GM's new truck 3.0 diesel. Gm was late to the party but did they ever show up strong. I did own a eco diesel that was tuned to run without the EGR, helped it a-lot. I just bought a 22 3.0 Duramax and this thing is great. Absolutely no turbo lag . I just drove the truck on a trip for 2800 miles. My average mpg was 27.7, my speed was 60 to 85, mostly 75. Also you said ram has a new turbo V6. I thought it was a straight 6.

Diesels are fantastic, but oil giants HATE letting consumers have the option for more fuel-efficient vehicles.
Why are diesels still successful & plentiful in Europe & Australia? It's not that they know something we don't know, it's that they don't have the aggressive lobbying & anti-diesel "emissions standards" that we do here in NA, however, they're getting there. There's certain places in cities that are "non diesel" zones, and even non-ICE zones are starting to pop up too, so that now EV giants can have their cake, forcing people to buy them.

  • @dermoplast

EV cannot tow with distance. Ecodiesel is an efficient engine that can tow. Only a Hybrid Ecodiesel can be better for both daily driver and towing. I dont know if that was even considered but it makes a lot of sense for me as a customer.

I like diesels, just not these modern diesels. They make great power but the emissions just kill them. EGR chokes them to death. DPF filters get clogged. DEF injectors get clogged, or heaters fail. The emissions just make them not worth owning. On top of that, gasoline is coming down and diesel is still holding high. I loved my ZR2 diesel but got rid of it before the inevitable emissions issues. I already had poor DEF quality messages a few times on road trips.

@@TruckKing The EV WOKE “Green New Deal” movement is the biggest scam in power generation utilities and consumer automotive history; especially in the truck & large suv segment that require heavy payloads, medium to long rage towing, extended off road use and long distance travel applications.
      Do the math:
“Diesel is the most efficient combustion engine fuel source, carrying 38 kilowatt hours of energy in every gallon - 27 times that of lithium ion batteries.”
Dropping diesel, gas and then PHEV engines, totally nuts as everyone seems to forget about the limitations of todays power grid.
Like diesel and gasoline, the energy density of coal and natural gas are superior to the best lithium batteries for power generation and “energy storage”.
In fact, it may take up to 30 years and trillions of dollars in constant upgrades to provide reliable and affordable net zero green power generation & power energy storage just to attempt to keep up with the increasing EV charging demands, not to mention the massive growing illegal foreign migration being allowed into the USA at alarming rates.
In fact, it is estimated that these undocumented, illegal immigrants will increase power grid utility demands over 25% yearly if the trend doesn’t stop immediately.
Further, as coal and natural gas power plants are being replaced with wind, solar and costly battery storage required to balance the grid, states doing so on large scales are FAILING; resulting in both blackouts and consumers leaving the states by masses unable to afford the significant constant utility bill increases, required for net zero power generation / battery energy storage.
      In conclusion:
It’s totally premature to delete natural gas & coal power generation, diesel, v8 gas and then PHEV engines being replaced by today’s unaffordable EV trucks and large SUVs that are also dysfunctional in many applications and green energy power generation all require expensive degrading toxic battery storage, the mathematical realities are already proving doing so at this point in time is absolutely nuts.

I watched one of the chief engineers say they literally designed the current half ton around the i6 to make sure the packaging would work. And it would also be too heavy for the smaller truck, no payload left. But they should have definitely continued development on the i4 diesel in that little truck.
