I met Anne and Nancy Wilson and the two guys in the band in my friends family room once. They were all sitting on the couch and my friend introduced me. They were very nice and asked me how old I was and what grade I was in. They said they were in a Band and asked me if I had heard of them. I said No, and they laughed. I was not yet a teenager and they were about 10 years older than me. They had nice manners, but laughed at almost everything I said. I was confident and spoke my mind without intimidation. I remember their hair was pretty crazy and they wore leather and boots. Their image seemed not to match their manners. They were dressed like tough, mean people, but were sensitive, artistic and funny, which, at 11, confused me.

I also met the keyboardist from Steppenwolf once in the lobby piano bar at the Sheridan in Tacoma, wa his friend was trying out for the piano player job there and he was sitting there listening. I was there with a couple of college classmates and a psych professor. He asked what we were majoring in and I said psych and he talked to me about a problem he had and asked me to give him advice. I knew Steppenwolf was a very famous band but I didn't know the musicians. He didn't tell me until it came up in conversation naturally. He seemed like a very nice man. I wondered what a pain it must be to have people bugging you all the time when you are in public. That must be annoying to have zero privacy when in public unless someone doesn't know who you are. It must also be hard to be touring and working so hard all the time. It would be very lonely life even surrounded by all those people.

My memories of Heart is meeting the Wilson sisters at their soundcheck in Houston, way back in the late 70's. I was working the concert in Houston setting up lights, equipment, etc. I had just gotten out of the marines and they noticed the utility shirt I was wearing with USMC on the pocket and asked me where I got it. I told them I had just gotten out after 8 years. They talked a bit, told me their dad was a Marine, gave me a hug and did their soundcheck. I went back to work and after they finished Ann brought me a coke/pepsi, it was a long time ago so not sure, but they were kind to me. I've been a fan ever since.

Nancy and Ann had more balls than any other rock vocalist and guitarist out there. Male/female shouldn't matter at all for R&RHOF or any other "club." The fact that both could melt your face off with their respective talent and instrument is justification enough. And I agree 100%...Nancy slays guitar and is totally underrated. You asked for a memory so here goes. My wife and I have been married for 42 years so far and were high school sweethearts. Heart was the very first band we both loved. We saw their tour with Exile, (who we both thought really sucked), in 1979 just one year after our marriage. Since then we've had the good fortune to see them live maybe another half dozen times. We even saw Ann by herself a couple years ago here at the famous Celebrity Theater. We still pop out the vinyl every now and again. The music stands up. My favorite Heart song? Mistral Wind. Thanks for this great interview.

Didn't appreciate it back then (~13) but at 18 it became one of my top 3 all time albums... can't begin to pick a favorite song of Heart's, just too many! Maybe Allies? Saw them in '85 or '86 in PHX for the tour of their self titled album, then once more in the 90's...

@user A singers greatness (or lack thereof), can't be reduced to simply what their range is. How about the expressiveness in their voice? Tonal quality? I'm tired of reading all these comments about how amazing Ann Wilson still sounds. It's natural for a singer to not sound as good at 70 years old as they did when they were 30 (hello Gillan). I'm afraid Ann has lost a fair amount of her range. Her voice gets clipped at times. Go and listen to her from 1978 (amazing) and then from 2018.

Wow, Heart..I was very young in the 70s because I was born in 67 but I remember the first time I heard Heart on an album and not the radio. My friends older sister had a few friends over, the parents were away.. and I went to visit my friend. Well the back room was full of bell bottom pants, striped shirts a bad ass stereo system, albums every where and beer and liquor bottles along with plenty of weed. Oh and the 17 to prob 20 year olds...Myself and my friend didn't go to the back room, we were in the front living room watching TV, out riding our bikes or something. That day her sister yelled y'all come back here for a few.. so we went back there and they said pick an album. I picked Heart..Dreamboat Annie. Not knowing at the time I had heard their music on the radio. I picked it because the front was so pretty with the big heart lol. My mother always listened to a radio, while cooking, cleaning, driving.. so I grew up listening to all the top 40 stations I guess you could say.. well they played the album for us.. we sat there in that smokey room, even with the windows open it was smokey. And then one of the older sisters friends decided we needed to try a joint or a beer.. we were like no no we're good. He kept on and on. So we got up to leave and the jerk chased us all around the house with freaking beer!!! I guess I was 11 or maybe 12. I had tasted liquor and beer b4 because my father is German and alcohol isn't a big deal over there and mom and dad had friends they'd go out to parties with our dances, and they had a liquor cabinet and usually maybe a few beers in the fridge. So I knew it tasted like shit and I didn't want it. But I'll never forget that day.. the day a high, prob drunk shithead chased me a totally straight track runner around the house😂😂😂 yup.. it was funny and of course he never caught us😉 My first time listening to Dreamboat Annie in album form.. lol

There are two songs that I remember distinctly changed my life: "Gypsy" from the Moodies' To Our Children's Children's Children, and Heart's "Crazy on You". The first piece I came across after my oldest brother came home from the US Army and a tour in Vietnam. The second piece came to me via a radio station in Denver, Colorado, where I was waiting for my first duty assignment after tech school at Lowry AFB. I didn't notice it at first, but then this VOICE leapt out of the radio, grabbed me by the ears, and shouted "LISTEN. TO. ME!"
I could not turn away. I wouldn't have thought of turning away! I was GOBSMACKED without ever hearing that word!

My first concert 1977 summer jamb, Memorial Stadium Seattle and of course they were the head liner among many greats , Steven Bishop , foreigner , Tower of Power , I hope I got that right ? I was 14 or 15 and my older sister invited me , we sat down just inside the 40 yard line (for lack of better reference) and 8 hours or more until dusk then Heart came out and blew me away never had seen a musically choreograph pyrotechnics it was insane , my sis was smart enough to know what happens as all day festivities get near to exceeding the more innocent spectators level of comfort, and that particular day the rainy city was hot with not a cloud insight and by 2 or 3 someone opened a fire hydrant at the edge of north grandstands and it washed everything in its path fo a good distance into the crowd , for a fifteen yr old it was by far the coolest thing I had experienced .
We did shift over and closer to stage but things got progressively cloister phobic and that’s when we moved up to the stands and still got great view without crowd maushing long before maushpits were invented or a thing ( correct the spelling for me please)
So that’s my love affair with Ann & Nancy , ongoing at least on my side lol . Ann looks great !
Even thru a much older mans eyes .

The first time I heard Heart, Dreamboat Annie, on the radio, I went out to buy the record. What a surprise it was. Pure rock and roll at its best.

I completely agree that women are underrepresented in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame. So many great female artists.

Wow... Heart at Cal Jam II at the Ontario Motor Speedway. On March 18, 1978, they came onstage and left an indelible imprint on my soul. At 6'6", I was one of the fortunate fans 50 feet away from the stage that had a clear view and felt the power from their amps along with 350,000 of my closest Southern California rock-n-roll fans as they played 'Crazy On You'. My favorite that day was 'Love Alive' as it just soothed my weary soul after a sleepless night and a wearisome festival event. 3 people deeply impressed me that day; Ann, Nancy, and Ted Nugent... Wow!!! Michael Leavitt - Orem, Utah

Ann and Nancy did such a fantastic job leading the Kennedy Center Honors for Led Zeppelin in Stairway to Heaven. It was so good, I couldn't believe it. It brought tears to my eyes, and I go back and listen to it again so often. I loved Heart and Crazy on You, Dreamboat Annie, etc.. Still do.

She still has such a great voice and is very beautiful. Just listening to her speak is a joy. The resonance in her voice is just audible gold.
The song is so incredible in many ways.

What strikes me about this interview is how simply gorgeous Ann is. The woman is 74 years young (as of 2024) and looks fabulous!
Whatever you're doing, Ann, please keep doing it and please keep making great music with Nancy.

It's really something to see her now, after seeing her in the 70's. Both girls were always pretty and she still is, but you can see wisdom behind those eyes. I've learned with my wife, who is only six days younger than me, that cute young girls can't hold a candle to an older woman of inner substance. Beauty really does come from within.
They say that with age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone. It appears Ann is the full deal. :)

Brilliant interview. Ann is amazing Mad crush on Nancy for over45 years. Nothing sexier than a female guitarist. Seen these ladies many times. Talent doesn’t even describe what they do. I am humbled. Thank you ladies.

I was 15, maybe 16 when Heart was first heard in Australia. Or at least this is when I first heard Heart. I genuinely fell in love with Ann Wilson. Teenage love, not teenage lust. I'm 60 now and still every time I see her sing or talk -- that little flutter comes back. And what a band!

We accept Heart as honary Canadiens. They paid their dues here first. So they always do well when they come here. Ann still has an outstanding voice and Nancy still looks like she's in her 30's in stage so much energy and still is an outstanding guitar player.

I remember being 20 years old (in '76) at my cabin in the hill country of Texas when I heard Magic Man for the first time. I was laying inside of the trunk of a 71 Pontiac Catalina with my head between two 6x9 Jensen 2 way speakers with my legs hanging out of the back of the car.( BIG trunk...) I was smoking a doobie and listening to the local radio station. I had a pioneer super tuner with a 200 watt amp turned up most of the way. They played Magic Man and it BLEW ME AWAY!!! I will never forget that moment in my history. I have loved Heart ever since and my wife and I have seen them several times in concert including seeing them at the Texxas Jam in '79 while on our honeymoon!. I am 65 now and still love to toke and listen to Heart's music.
