    6:50 this sounds alot like the Ottoman Empire's succession system. Usually the eldest or the chosen heir would immediately kill the other people in the line of succession (usually the younger brothers) or if they were exceptionally merciful they may just have them exiled or otherwise disowned so that they can't try to usurp the throne. I remember quite a few stories of new kings having the Janissarys throw his younger brothers into the sea with their hands and feet tied, or having them strangled. One of the greatest Sultans of all time, Suleiman the Magnificent, had one of his sons beaten to death so that his favorite son wouldn't be killed once Suleiman died.

    "Stardust" is what got me into Neil Gaiman. Before the movie came out, I looked it up and learned that it was based off the book. I ended up picking up the book, because the movie looked good. I loved the book, and continued reading his other books. The movie was alright. I have a little crush on Claire Danes so I liked her in her part.

    I'm another one of those people who really likes this movie - I feel like it's very much tapping into the same vein as The Princess Bride. And while I can't really disagree or counter any points you make, it does demonstrate how enjoying a work can allow you to ignore it's flaws.

      True - I could say THIS for a lot of things I watch (anime, cartoons, movies, etc.), as long as they don't piss me off too much, of course... No work is perfect, no matter what anyone tells you.
      Glad to have you back and doing well, BTW, Deusdaecon. You picked a good one to critique this time.

    • @xen0bia
      @xen0bia 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, most of the criticism is fair, but whatever I still love this movie. My only issue is the witch flip flipping at the end. I actually would've loved it had she truly given up fighting for immortality with her sisters now dead, linking back to what Tristan said earlier about immortality being awful with all your loved ones gone. They certainly missed a great oppurtunity there to change things up from the usual. It certainly would've given the character a little bit more of heart as well, more than we generally see in villains.

      The thing is this is often the case as if a film was perfect with no flaws it'd be taught in film school and hailed as the greatest film ever made.
      Flaws don't mean a film is bad, having way more flaws than positives makes a film bad.

      i still can't beleive that mustache. it looked kind of dumb CGI'ed out, looked just as bad on his face. Only in Hollywood would anyone pay $3,000,000 instead shaving off a mustache. Maybe for the next Thor movie they can spend $10,000,000 and give Thor a CGI beard.

    I liked this movie, but the only issue I take with it is the casting of Claire Danes. You know how the Nostalgia Critic said that Julia Roberts seemed to American Sweetheartish for the role of Tinkerbell in his review of Hook? Well, that's how I feel about Claire Danes in this movie. Her performance is solid enough, but apart from her accent being kind of atrocious she sticks out like a sore thumb among a cast of mostly British names in drama and comedy. It comes across as *way* too obvious that her casting was only meant to put young American bums in seats. Personally, I would have gone for someone a little less conventional like Sienna Guillory or Natalie Dormer.

    You are one of my favorite "older movie" review channels (alound with GoodBadFlicks and Foundflix) - one of the channels I enjoy watching for insight on older movies (and suggestions for older movies I haven't seen yet) rather than to decide what movies to see in the theaters right now. How do you have only 4400 subs?! That flabbergasts me. . You deserve a lot more, considering your interesting choice of review topics, and quality reviews. I recall hearing somewhere that Neil Gaiman was very hands on when the movie's creative team were first adapting the movie, wanting it to be fateful to his creation and to ensure they do it justice, as he does with most of his other works. However, after spending months on recording the audiobook for Stardust, he realized how long and daunting it would be to adapt Stardust into a 2-hour movie, so he decided to give his blessing to adapt it in whatever way they felt was best.

    It's not cannon as it's a deleted scene but one alternate ending does in fact show Tristin and Yeveine changed the rule of killing siblings cuz all of their children and grandchildren even were still alive to see them off to returning to the skies.
    It's also said in the film that only make heirs can inherit which is why Una was still alive but honestly it doesnt matter as its mentioned once and since Una was the only "princess" it wasnt a big stake than her servitude to the witch.
    Another great reveiw

    What if the emotional state of the caster at the time the spell is cast is the thing that causes the aging not the strength of the spell.
    Or perhaps when a spell is cast it voids a fuck load of magic into the area which can be drawn upon later so future spells cast in the same place will cost less

    4:05 I know it's possible, but it always bugs me how in movies whenever 2 important characters bone their almost always guaranteed a baby. There's of course a wide range of averages but the numbers I've see are roughly 80-130 times couples will have sex before they conceive a child, when they're intending to have a child. I've heard of numbers as low as 20 but those were carefully timed during ovulation. If I lived in movie land I'd wear 2 condoms because otherwise every one night stand would lead to me creating the child who'll lead a revolution against an evil king and that just sounds stressful.

    I still think the soothsayer scene was pretty clever. Ask him a few easy questions to determine the pattern for true or false and presuming the runes are always correct...now you can reveal the soothsayer's treachery without their trying to hide behind an interpretation only the sayer can see.

      @konstance13 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Deusdaecon Reviews Nah, it's all good. 😊 Honestly, you were very objectively fair. A lot of what I love about this film is aesthetic: the locations are gorgeous, the sky pirate imagery, dead Septimus sword fighting (one of my favorite fight scenes), even little details like how each brother's outfit has his number etched in different spots. It's just a beautiful film imo.
      I think something that helped me enjoy it as well was that I didn't view Tristan as a heroic protagonist who gets his way in the end. I saw him as a narrow-minded pushover who has a lot of growth over a short period of time. He doesn't become king as a reward; he learns to take responsibility beyond his own wants. Yvainne isn't a prize for him, they learn to love each equally and are both willing to sacrifice for the other. I normally hate romance in film, but I like them together for some reason.
      But you made a lot of good points and noted a lot of plot holes I missed.

    This is one of those times I read the book before seeing the movie. I like Neil Gaiman as a writer, and this wasn't the worst adaptation I've ever seen but it was .... Well I liked it enough to not feel like I wanted money. But I'm too nice.
    It's off seeing pre-Superman here I had no idea that he was in this. Was it just the moustache, or was he actually acting? Maybe he is one of those subtle actors, but I've yet to see him act (yes, I mean Man From UNCLE, which I thought wasn't bad).
    ... Now that I think about it, the movie actually ruined the book for me because I suspended disbelief more for the book, and then when I was seeing the plot holes in the movies, I saw them in the book as well.
    I should end on a good note, so ... Two. 1 I'm happy for Charlie Cox getting to be Daredevil and 2 I liked NG's contribution to Doctor Who.

    Regarding how Tristran knew, where to find witches, in the book, he could tell anyone who asked where anything in magical world is, that was his "superpower" due to him being part magical being. Of course, no one asked him that, but at least he had that ability...
    Edit: Wait Tristran in movie became immortal? Well that kinda fucks up whole ending of the book...

    • @GrahamChapman

      When I watched the movie, I just kinda assumed that Tris saw the tracks of Lamia's carriage and followed her back to the witches' home the good old fashioned way... That's what I would've done at least...
      Eeeh, kinda. The movie ends with Tris and Yvaine using a Babylon candle to go up into the sky where they become two stars, side by side. Basically a very "and they lived happily ever after" ending. I didn't mind it.

    That succession system, as it is, actually looks a lot like how the Ottoman empire handled it. And yeah, outside a few extremely lucky rolls of the dice it was a huge mess.

    I reallly wanted to watch this movie for years. Couldn't remember what it was called, just remembered some of the promo posters etc. finally found out what it was. Some years later was able to watch it and.... i turned it off when he enslaved the lady. fuck that.

      TH-cam happened my friend, can't risk getting copyright striked and beside if its important to what I'm saying i still use clips with audio sparingly.

    One could argue that it being a magic world regular science doesn't apply and therefore metal can sharpen obsidian.
    I personally hated the film - especially how they changed the ending from the way it was in the book. Because the voice over does mention children - which in the book they can't have because SHE'S A STAR - and Tristan eventually grows old and dies and she lives on, ever youthful and ever alone. So truthfully a kind of depressing ending that I prefer to the happy sappy one in the movie.

    • @Visplight
      @Visplight 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also didn't like what they did with Victoria. It made the whole thing so petty and cliche. The whole point was that Tristan grew up and realized that you shouldn't go around chasing people who aren't into you by making extravagant gestures, and instead gets with someone he has a much more personal history with. Making it some sort of petty "well, she was a bitch for not liking you" plot sorta killed it.

  • @Visplight
    @Visplight 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yeah, I hated that they made Victoria the standard "she's a bitch because she doesn't like the main character back, and anyone else she likes is a jerk" cliche. The book was far better about how it was a dumb idea and Victoria wasn't wrong for not liking the main character.

    What happened to puppet master 3

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it's on the way, the way it'll work because there are so many puppet master films, is ill do two or three puppet masters then break it up with other things, otherwise it would just get very boring for everyone involved.

    I really enjoyed the book, didn't care one bit for the movie - especially for that vomit enducing ending (especially with the father showing up ugh). I mean the book ending was so much cooler. Not saying the book was perfect but it engaged me so much more than the movie that is full of actors I normally really enjoy.

    I enjoyed Captain Shakespeare the most and I agree, the romance plot was dire! Needs more Sky Pirates.

    • @arthas640
      @arthas640 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      this movie would be perfect if they just cut all the poorly written romance BS and replaced it with more Sky Pirates, or possibly combined the two and had Captain Whats-his-face fall in love with the entire Sky Pirate crew.

    that is less a "review", more a "summary", no ?

    • @deusdeaconReviews
      @deusdeaconReviews  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s neither it’s a post mortem analysis examining the film in chronological order, you summarise scene by scene to get the audience perspective and then you analyse from the retrospective as well, REVIEW just fits on the channel header better don’t you think ?

    I hated it.
    Though, a lot of my hate comes from the fact that it's Gaiman. Once you realize most people go apeshit over him for his flowery language and general fuckery rather than telling a story..... Well... It makes his works less interesting. (neverwhere, though, is still decent... not great, but decent).

      You have tastes so dark and terrible and nonredeemable that there will never be any happiness or joy in your movie watching life.
      This movie was phenomenal, it had one of the greatest scores of all time, absolute candy to the fucking ears like hearing literal angels sing, but filtered into that corrupted skull all that got through were banshee like wails.
      Every day I exist on this earth I am ever grateful I am not so afflicted as you.

    I am a bit surprised. This is the first video of yours I really don't like. Everyone I know loved this movie, and I personally thought it was WAY better than the bland book. I love Gaiman usually, but this movie surpassed the book BY FAR.

    THIS is the kind of movie I can “turn my brain off and enjoy”. Fast & Furious movies and Transformers sequels are TOO stupid.
