      I agree with you. It really shines in parts. But I just don’t understand why the filmmakers at some point just said “aw fuck it, it’s good enough.” They a potential rival to the omen and the exorcist, but they just got sleepy or something. I just watched it again and the first act is handled with so much love and care, what happened in the third act? This is the moment when Lucifer shows up and you make that anticlimactic?

    What separates average or above-average horror movies from bad ones is that the former have at least one great scene or set-piece. In this movie, it's the cave scene where Elias Koteas sees the remnants of the battle in hell. Really awesome visual.

    Lucifer: little Tommy Daggett. How I loved listening to your prayers before you jumped into bed, so scared that I was under there...and I was!
    I loved this bit. Loved 1 - 3 than tapped out.

      @@celiashen5490 right? 4 and 5 have interesting ideas but aren't really prophecy movies . Instead tbh they kind of remind me of what part of a real version of that south park episode with kenny helping fight a war in heaven would look like . I have no idea why...
      Really enjoyed the first 3 though especially gabriel. But Lucifer is up there too.

    • @RenegadeVile
      @RenegadeVile 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I dodge religion too, but I find it makes for good inspiration for fiction most of the time and I've not really encountered the proselytizing all that much over the years. Sure, God, angels, demons and all that jazz is considered to be real within the confines of a given work of fiction but I never get the feeling it's trying to recruit me. But, I may be drawing too much from video games, where this may be much rarer than movies inspired by Christianity and/or other religions.

    I like this depiction of lucifer, but would be more interesting to me is showing a depiction anywhere in film of what he was like before he fell and became the devil we know him to be. Because it was told that he was beautiful and his grace shined the brightest(his name Lucifer meaning bringing light, or morning star). I would like to see anyone come up with that depiction of a graceful ambitious character who increasingly depends into hatred for god and rebels. Its a cool idea and would make a fascinating story.

    • @deusdeaconReviews

      I know this comment is more than 3 years old at this point, but I had to add my recommendation and just hope you see it.
      Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice is about Lestat meeting the devil, who essentially wants to offer him a job. There's other stuff to wade through of course, its and Anne Rice novel, but the middle section of the book is the devil telling his entire life story to Lestat in the hope of showing that he isn't now nor has he ever been "evil." His greatest crime was constantly *questioning* God and being afraid that he'd made a mistake. Memnoch (which is says is his real name) and the other angels were completely flabbergasted when humans appeared on Earth, then intrigued and fascinated by them. But when they started to experience true suffering from disease and starvation and war Memnoch couldn't bear their suffering and flew into the presence of God with endless questions and accusations.
      There is SO MUCH MORE to it but I had to stop myself before I ended up posting a damn book report. I highly recommend you check it out. There are mentions of things that happened in various other books in her Vampire Chronicles but you don't need to have read those to enjoy this. Its a very sympathetic and interesting take on the origin of Satan (a name he *loathes* but is quick to point out only means "I Accuse")

      Devin Lavole..People have been waiting for a production of Paradise Lost for a long time but humans are too busy looking to the stars. There was a British production on television in the 1970's but I struggle to find the weekly series that aired. The series followed the creation, Eden, Adam and Eve and Lucifer sitting upon the throne of Heaven before God returns and .... was a long time ago and I was a child.

    I remember having seen this movie when it first came out in theaters, I was 15-years-old, and exiting from the theater disappointed. I was fully expecting to see what the trailer and commercials kept showing: an epic battle of Angels. Instead getting a lot of talking characters occasionally interrupted by short bursts of action scenes. Not what I wanted to see. A few years later and a little older with a better capacity for understanding how film narratives work I started watching it on late night TV and was absolutely taken in first by the characters and the performances. Now it's one of my favorite movies.

    Gabriel, oddly, is depicted in religious texts as near to humans, being an angel that gently brings the souls of decesead to heaven. So his depiction in this movie is somewhat incorrect. I would have preferred Michael or Uriel in his place, seen that they are way more warlike angels than Gabriel.

    • @michaelkeha
      @michaelkeha 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jacopo Armini See I don't know if Michael would work as he is basically God's enforcer for lack of a better term and would most likely stay out of these kind of conflicts unless God himself ordered him to attack though in most of these kinds of movies and it is rather odd with this one when Gabriel or Michael goes bad the other one is the one who is the good guy basically that helps to stop the evil one

    Losing faith by seeing too much can be just as critical as losing faith from not seeing enough, because you become can become mired in terrifying images and ideas, with no understanding of the context or meaning, making you lose your ability to see the love and hope in the world, worlds to come, or even in God's view of humanity (and you). It's interesting that you want to look at it without religious context but ask questions like this.

    Such an underrated film. Christopher Walken was the stand-out obviously but everyone else did their parts very well. Viggo Mortensen is in my top five movie Devil list, joining Peter Stormare (Constantine), Al Pacino (Devil's Advocate), Robert De Niro (Angel Heart), and Peter Cook (Bedazzled from 1967). It's an intriguing original film that was sadly forgotten and riddled with terrible sequels.

    I was kinda shocked when it was the devil that showed up to help them I figured they would have gone with Michael as often with these movies with angels when Gabriel or Michael are the villian the other is one of the good guys now I haven't watched this movie in a long time but I don't recall them mentioning Michael at all.

    I liked this movie when I saw it on VHS in college. I haven't thought about it in ages, so thanks to Deusdaecon for reviewing it.
    I think the reason why the movie has 3 Pulp Fiction actors is due to the Miramax/Weinstein connection that the actors have. It was filmed around the same time as Pulp Fiction, but released later due to the Weinstein's ambivalence about it.

    Azrael is the angel of death from the bible, so i don't know why they use Gabriel, as Gabriel is most notably for being the one that carries the prophecy, not who enacts it.

    I have to say that I think Gabriel's horn, which of course when you put it in those specific terms has a very specific context, but I can't remember what it is because I am NOT super religious... But I think it's the Horn of Jericho

    So Angels, who have been around forever, fight like feral cats and haven't been inventing new ways to kill each other beyond trying to rip each other's hearts? Sounds kind of dumb if you ask me. As bad as Legion was, having Gabriel and Michael be experts in every weapon humanity has makes way more sense when you think about it. Also at 6:35 you should have said "if you think getting a new Bible chapter would drive this guy insane, but what baffles me more is that the extra chapter wasn't just the events of Steel Ball Run."
