Why am I watching this video? I drive a $1000 shitbox
You're better off with that anyway.
Cause your shitbox won't talk back to you when you miss a maintenance deadline, or hell won't shut itself off if you decide to drive 5 over..
Don't feel like that..I drive a 1000+ dollar a month shit box and I am also not sure why I am watching this video. 🤣🤣
You’re allowed to dream.
Me too, and it’s check engine light has been on for over a year but you know what? The car keeps going, it doesn’t care, it’s not shutting itself down until it’s flatbedded to the dealer.
For as new as Lucid is, it's quite remarkable how well they got "driving" right.
@japanwatchconnection Not just the higher up, he was the Chief Vehicle Engineer of the Model S.
Lucid investors bought the best team money could buy - so the mechanical underpinning and base tech is awesome - the much better Tesla - but Software takes time as the German vendors know very well
@@antblanks He was also Chief Engineer at Lotus. That Lotus.
You only have one chance to make a good first impression.
Not "remarkable" these guys are sweating the details. And I'm not kidding and do not own a Lucid or a single share of LCID stock. I do follow the auto industry though. They've got the deep pockets to weather almost any storm.
What a day to be alive that BMW is called a luxury sedan and some other brand a sports sedan
BMW chose volume over 'sport' 30 years ago.
Huh? When has BMW not been considered a luxury brand. ?
@@user-my4xu4gf1z Agreed, someone explained to me a while ago that GM analogs to German car makers is VW is Chevy, BMW is Pontiac, Audi is Buick, Porsche is Corvette and Mercedes is Cadillac.
@@anydaynow01 eh idk about all that lol. German cars are just way better than American imo. Sounds like America is the knock off brands too me. Coming from an American 😂
2018 BMW blog compared stinger with 5 series, did the same thing.
Lucid has a great philosophy and hope they can survive. Wish they'd create a volume seller to help them on their mission.
If it’s anything, their $80k SUV starts sale end of this year.
Hopefully the Gravity (or whatever it's called if the copyright doesn't get sorted) will be a hit. Can't wait to see what they could do with a 3/Y competitor.
Maybe they will be owned by a Chinese company in the future. That's the only way they can survive.
@@KidKingdomHeartsno it wont.
Too much of a niche company with expensive EV with no pedigree. I doubt it they’ll be around in 5-10 years.
Thanks for the audio testing - one of the few things that’s really hard to get info on.
Best part about this channel
Especially when one of the biggest reasons to buy an EV is if you're looking for the quietest ride.
Of note, the SPL level difference between the Lucid is only 2dB louder than the BMW. The human ear usually cannot perceive that difference in SPL, 3-4 dB is when you start to notice. The Lucid is by no means noisy or not-luxury feeling, I have one, compared it to a Tesla which was atrocious. So by their own measurements BMW is BARELY quieter than the Lucid, not much to criticize there.
Mark's nervous giggle as Jack threw the Lucid into the turn was hilarious.
"Hans...take me on the worm ride" 😂 you guys are f_____g hilarious!
I lost it
After watching one of your videos I always feel like having a phd afterwards in that topic 😂😂
Congrats Doctor!
“You see it on a graph” - thanks, Mark, for believing in me…
Lmao
No other channel like this, not even close. Greatly appreciate your insight👍🏼 Very cool glimpse of the audio testing 🔊
I just hope they know it. Appreciation from this quarter!
Watched this earlier today while sitting at Lucid delivery center waiting to pickup my car.. had to wait 30 minutes they were backed up. Not a ton of people picking up new cars, but they had one guy total. Ugh. Like 5th time already saw some teething problems being a new company. Watching this video was a little afraid they were going to go "Lucid is a POS get the i5." but happy it was pretty much what you'd expect. My review of Lucid Touring after 8 hours of ownership: This car is really fucking nice, lol. My biggest gripe is no Android Auto. And like seemingly all cars, with wheel where I like it it obstructs view of instrument panel. Oh and no button on front to open the frunk. I'd actually prefer to use it but more annoying to open. But otherwise car drives great. Normal day-to-day driving great, and went out for a bit after family went to bed for a little more spirited and yeah it just lives up to hype.
Good luck with the Lucid! You are officially an early adopter.
You guys swapped the driving segment names FYI
They did it on purpose because of how the lucid drove
It would be really interesting to see a Lucid Air vs Taycan comparison, as the best driving EVs that you can buy.
This was an actual great comparison because of the talking points that could be had. Super informative and thought provoking. Great vid!
Another top notch video Mark and Jack!
You guys are so good at this. Marc’s comments are 1000% spot on . I test drove the i5 and it was as boring as my Camry. I’ll have to try the Lucid.
Currently building a garage for a Lucid Air or Gravity. 😅
Bruh I just don't get this comment. If u want a drivers car get a porsche or bmw M car. The hell u want an EV for if your looking for driving engagement. If I wanted anEV it would be a pure luxury cruiser.
Quite a few Lucids around here over the past year or so. Definitely seeing way more Airs than Model Ss these days. Though Model Y is like a Honda Civic around here these days! If it were my money, and with the Saudi's hell bent on making Lucid work, combined with the brain trust of Lucid (watch their tech videos!), I would get a Gravity with no regrets.
@@user-my4xu4gf1z I don't think it's unreasonable to want an EV that doesn't bore the hell out of you. Sure, if you're looking for an enthusiast car period, maybe avoid them, but it's completely fair to be in the market for an EV and have a little character and feel.
The only thing is that Lucid will creak like a camry after 6 months
Great review, guys, as usual. Thanks. 👍👍
Thanks for the video comparing the two! Definitely helped me be a more informed consumer.
I’m surprised that in your tech segments you haven’t discussed BMW being the only manufacturer using brushed motors in its EVs, needing service, brush replacements, and possibly cleaning out at some point. Since no other manufacturer is using brushed motors over magnets, I’m skeptical of it being the way to go
You do have to give them credit for selecting a motor topology that does not require any permanent magnets dug up from mining.
BMW recommends replacing the brushs after 168k miles and the replacement module is 100 bucks. If the brushs indeed last as long as BMW claims, then this should be a non-issue.
BMW dealers probably had a say in this decision. Dealers need high profit service visits, not maintenance free cars.
@@aussie2uGABrushes are cheap and will possible need to be changed only once. It’s a non issue.
@@aussie2uGABMW dealers don’t make huge profits. They have an extraordinary amount of overhead (which is insane imo but that’s another discussion)
Great comparison guys. Just drove an I5 loner for 3 days and really couldn't put my finger on what was not so good. But you guys hit it. Thanks so much
Just some real world data points.
Last week recharged at a 350kw Electrify America station. I have an AWD Lucid Pure with the same 700+ volt 88 kW-hr battery pack as the RWD Pure. It was 52F and I started charging at a little over 250 kW. I charged for 30 minutes and went from 5% to 80% averaging over 132kW even though I was the fourth car connecting at a 4 bay station. So the higher voltage can help.
I have also gone to a EA 350kW charger and even though I'm the only one there, have connected at only 50kW (I always have the battery preconditioning before charging). When that happens I take a quick hit (10 to 15 minutes) and then drive 50 -60 miles to the next charger) hoping that I will connect at higher speeds.
The key is to just charge enough to get to your destination (with a margin of safety). Then complete your charge to 80% over night.
This sounds horrible!
Charging infrastructure continues to hold back EVs. Gotta at least hit tesla supercharger reliability levels.
Still. Before you drive to the next station, try the other stalls first. Often it's just one charger stall being limited, not the whole site.
@@Cyrribrae not around here - across Europe - very dense network of HP charger - now its getting too full on high traffic times
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 yep. And even more important, Europe's network of level 2 charging is far superior to the US's. Tragic indeed. But slowly getting better.
@@Cyrribrae yes you are right - I now upgrade my garage charger to 400V if you have this level over there? Its 3 x faster then level 2, so the car is always full over night even if you roll in with 0%.
What a great detailed review. One of my favorite channels for pure information.
Thanks for thanking us for our time ❤
First time I see a real audio test in a car review, Bravo!
The glass roof on the Lucid really does it a disservice as a luxury car. Instead of absorbing noise, it reflects it.
The heat as well. If you own anything with a glass roof you’ll want a good tint on it ASAP!
We're getting it with the regular roof for that reason
@@jamied9448 it's great that they have the option. I would never want the glass. Have fun with the car. Driven two. Very well thought out.
id say if one buy a new car to own for a long time, avoid anything that isn`t a simple uniform metal roof. no sunroof moonroof any of that crap, its just rust and leaks waiting to happen
I love my Lucid glass roof. It they do offer option of metallic roof for anyone with a different preference.
Love the on-track seque @ 20:05. Nice touch. :-)
As an European, who always appreciates old BMWs, there are no reasons to buy i5.
Good job Lucid !!
You are a broke boomer anyway
Great review... I have zero interest in either of these but I still ended up watching all the way through and feel like I learned something. Well done.
Thank you for an honest review and more importantly, offering different perspectives. As much as I would enjoy the driving dynamics in the Lucid, comfort and refinement are now a higher priority for me. Keep up the great work!
Great blend of your normal, thorough review with details relevant to the EV side of these cars. I’m not an EV shopper but find Lucid fascinating. I want driving feel to connect to my car, even if it is my daily. Lucid is showing focus on drivers. I hope they succeed
I’m not EV person. But if I did go EV, it be a Lucid for sure. It seems like a better fit and finish than a Tesla and does everything better than other brands.
except that it’s even less reliable than a Tesla 😂
Love this content
So in this set up i definitely think as a drivers car the Lucid wins hands down. Excited to see where they take the EV world and I'm not an EV fan at all. However, it seems Lucid do actually give a damn about the driving feel and experience and wish them every success for the future! No other EV manufacture seems to be going this route yet.
Great indepth video as always and love the channel!
Nearly 80 grand for a bmw that is about as exciting to drive as a camry. What a world.
It's a whole new world. If you watch the Savagegeese video on the BMW i5 M60 you'll see that excitement isn't all it's cracked up to be.
Maybe one of the best reviews.
the quantity of these cars that you're actually going to see on the road this month: somewhere between 0 and 1
The G60 5 series is basically a replacement for the SWB 7 series at this point, it's almost the same size and share the driving dynamics philosophy. I imagine the next 3 series will essentially be the 5 series replacement now.
Styling wise- this is a battle between Hyundai and Rolls-Royce
Hmm what?
@@yungrichnbroke5199The Lucid has the understated elegance of a Rolls-Royce, and the bimmer has the shouty tacky abrasive look of a Hyundai. Clear enough for ya?
@@jerrybarrax5618 yea everyone has different tastes though.
@@yungrichnbroke5199for sure, but the awkward bmw design ethos since the early 2000s is devolving. The only attractive bmw in the last 15 years has been the z4. The others are variations of ugly. The model s is beautifully designed and this is a well.
@@jerrybarrax5618The Lucid looks like a soap bar, sort of like the Merc EQE, designed to be slippery. The BMW looks like a beaver hit with the ugly stick. Software however on the Licid looks barely even “half-baked”.
So I’d buy something other than either car. I’ve driven an EQE 53 AMG, the new Hybrid AMG C63, Audi RS e-Tron, Tesla Model 3 Performance, Kia EV6 GT and Hyundai Ioniq 5N and with all of them the software, driving and usage experience was better than these 2 cars appear. I’ve also driven a BYD Seal Performance - it is quick, but its handling is unsafe. (Currently my wife has a Ioniq 5 non-N, and I have an AMG and shopping for an EV replacement)
In this Xanax inundated, Special K ingesting world, BMW knows its lease client, very well. With Lucid, it's made for DRIVERS. I am so happy to FINALLY see a Lucid every once in a while on the road away from the Phoenix area, where its assembled.
To me, the Lucid is a masterpiece. A genuine work of art. The BMW is a product from a marketing company.
To see the smiles on your faces while ripping it up with Lucid, it's so easy to see what is the more FUN, and in many ways, better car.
Saying an EV is made for drivers is hilarious. If u want a drivers car get a porsche or bmw M car.
Have either of you clowns driven a Lucid? I'm a multi Porsche and other sports car owner from a time when actual driving characteristics were built into cars, vs synthetic. I have owned many sports and muscle cars over the years and FULLY understand fast driving, ask my attorney. The Lucid is a solid driver's car, quicker than anything I've ever owned. So what if it doesn't have a combustion engine? It has massive, instant torque and speed. Go drive one.
@@user-my4xu4gf1z You can get an EV Porsche and M car. 🙂 There is no reason someone won't make an electric lightweight MX-5 type car soon,as long as buyers are happy with a very small range. The Mini Cooper SE electric is within 100kg of the Mini Cooper S ICE, most owners seem to think it's pretty fun to drive. In terms of getting stuck in to hooking up tightly spaced hairpin corners, there is no reason an EV can't be fun (obviously the combustion engine noises and gear changes are missing, but then you have the instant throttle response which only the very best of ICEs can get close to,so swings and roundabouts) -- in terms of apex-to-apex I definitely believe BEVs have the potential to be lots of fun, as long as the weight is close to parity with the ICE equivalent.
Do one of these but do like a Camry vs Sonata when y'all get the new Camry
Very well done as always. Best car channel in the biz
Great review, guys! I feel like I want to drive around your area just for a chance to see you celebrities.
I would love it if you made a masterclass in audio technology
Assuming it's reliable, it's gonna be so nice to get a Lucid Air for like $30k in a few years
That's my plan!
Straight up the most thorough and thoughtful car review channel. Love the audio system and underbody analysis. Oh… the Lucid’s rear isn’t elegant.
You can upgrade the sound system on the Lucid pure.
It sounds like somebody who's going to crank it would be well advised to do so. Why does SG do more of those audio evaluations. I like that. @@isserdigan2835
It’s remarkable how specifically these guys can describe what exactly the lucid does right

Ok
There is a B58 on the 540i
For once I agree regarding the B58.
Did you mix up the chapters in the timeline? "Lucid Driving Impressions" with the BMW and vice versa?
Did this Lucid Air have the base Surreal Sound system or Surreal Sound Pro?
I always love your final thoughts part guys, you put so much thought in it combined with tech and industry knowledge. Great!
Regarding those 2 cars - exactly the category where I am buying next. The underpinnings of the Lucid are very promising but its not ready yet for prime time, since they have unlimited Saudi Money it's only a matter of time.
The BMW is great tech - but leaves me as a BMW fan warmish at best. I also like the iX to drive, inside but not to look at and it's a SUV....so I will chose something else which I never thought I would go for this time....thanks guys!
@japanwatchconnection disclaimer there is no dream decision for me right now - I signed up for a fully loaded EQE500E, good for long distance, competitive lease (fully loaded costs the same as a naked entry level i5 or half compared a Lucid over here) so.....
NOOOOOO!
Just kidding congrats.👍 @@bavariancarenthusiast2722
Can you make a list of noise measurements for different cars?
So easy choice... Lucid over the i5. Can't remember the last time I was impressed by a new BMW model (as the current owner of 2 BMWs)
Not at all - but easy it is none of them - I will go somewhere else always been a BMW driver
@japanwatchconnection VW has objectively made junk for decades
You guys are just broke.
BMW isn't for you.
Go get a Kia. The cheap one
Mark, did you do an audio comparison between the glass and aluminum roofs? I'd imagine the aluminum roof model is SIGNIFICANTLY quieter at speed.
What about comparing to the M60? Wouldn’t that satisfy the sporty need compared to the Lucid?
Nice to see a legitimate smile on Marc's face in the Lucid!
Did you did the sound test with the Lucid Surreal Sound Pro or the basic sound system? Looks like the basic system as the Pro system is just excellent.
For my money, the Lucid is the clear winner. Not that I can afford either of them, but the Lucid is a better driver's car, and I do love driving dynamics. I also love good design and, IMHO, the Lucid looks elegant. The BMW is fugly.
I am a little disappointed that Lucid has so many QC issues, but for a startup car maker, that's forgiveable. BMW is certainly no paragon of long-term reliability, so the quality/reliability factor is a wash.
And for me, the bottom line is emotional. I want Lucid to succeed because I want cleaner air and lower emissions, I respect what they're trying to achieve, I appreciate the fact that they're the only company matching Tesla on range, and I bought stock in the company and I want that investment to pay off, damnit!
Okay, so maybe it's emotional and financial. :-).
Thanks guys for another great video.
8:00 Um did you condition the battery in either car?
FYI - "driving impressions" timestamp caption on YT was swapped for both cars
The Lucid really is the 90s BMW of the 2020s
So much for the Ultimate Driving Machine
I get it why people hate EV's. I used to until i learned about the Lucid Air in 2022. Since then i watched their videos. Followed their factory Amp 1 construction. Watched the tech talks that explained their superior technology and the reviews by countless people who praises the driving dynamics of the Air. Its a Technological Masterpiece worthy of buying. ❤. This coming from an M340i X5 M50 and Porsche GT4 owner. Wife also coming along in liking the Air.
I think they should have come out with the Gravity first, or given the Air more of a CUV look. Yeah it may have cost them range numbers but folks want CUVs (lifted station wagons/estate cars). But yeah, after watching the Lucid tech videos and seeing the SG Sapphire review with the engineers I'm a huge Lucid fan!
@@anydaynow01 i think Lucid air puts them in a position to showcase their technology better than a gravity. Plus Lucid has racing DNA. Not gonna matter much with the Gravity. I am not a fan of the infotainment placement of the gravity too. Its too high up. Plus the plastic wheel fender wells are a turn off for me. It makes it look cheap
Pretty sure you said the same thing about Tesla when they are in their cash burn state. They werent profitable for almost 10 years 😂😂😂
japanwatchconnectionlucid will go bankrupt if the Saudis get bored. Otherwise they can lose money forever.
@@isserdigan2835 Tesla survived on government subsidized clean air credits mostly from the state of CA. They forced China into the same clean air credit model as well, but China slyly used them to build out their EV supply chain infrastructure and then created BYD and is now eating their lunch.
Are you sure the lucid was preconditioned before charging? That's the only reason I could see for it to start at 55kw getting up to 139kw later.
I've had terrible luck with the charging around Chicago, but if I get more than 80kw at any point in the charging session, it's because the charger was fully functional.
very much this, if you don't precondition you're already putting yourself at a huge disadvantage
Interesting video, kind of disagree, or not disagree but don't really understand the driving impression feedback, but loved it anyway. The driving impression time stamp titles are switched.
I bet the general public would think the opposite would be true of these two vehicles
I know, right? The BMW looks aggressive and sporty, like it should be able to shred its tires all day; and the Lucid looks like a sleek, glassy-smooth-riding luxury sedan. I’m sitting here watching them drive both these cars and I still have to tell myself which one is which.
Awesome review guys!! I currently own a combustion vehicle but am intrigue with EV and perhaps maybe purchasing one in the future. Thank you for your honest opinion on EV vehicle and i must say --- i am a fan!!! I think the world is quickly evolving into vehicle electrification and with more options on the table it would be a lot easier to make a decision on what to purchase.
The first Lucid Air was SO far ahead of the pack.
Lucid is the KING
The king of creating a car for .3% of the market.
0:54 - Savage Geese attack residue (just below the drivers side mirror)!!
If they named the battery B58, would AI Jack halt, catch fire or become sentient?
If that were to come to pass, Jack would become the poster boy for spontaneous human combustion. Let's just hope that doesn't happen,
Why are you making good videos?
I hope lucid stays in the game. Both them and rivian are facing the mountain.
I love my Air GT but I do hope to get a chance to drive the Pure RWD some day.
"Your risk of being air lifted out is much greater in the Sapphire"...lol
I anxiously wait for the day Lucid comes to Europe
Not totallly sold on the Lucid pitch yet, but I do think they offer a unique take on the future of EVs and it would be a shame if they don't maintain solvency going forward.
So basically it just comes down to whether you want to use turn signals or not
I would love to see the Lucid Air Touring AWD with the upgraded sound system and their driving assist professional vs the BWM i5 M60. These are the 2 EVs that made my shortlist, but went with the BMW because of the software. You didn’t mention how you crack your head getting in and out of the Lucid unless you remember to duck.
You have wrongly marked the video slider, (driving impressions)
I know they were going for ultimate range and driving dynamics with coming out with a sedan first, but CUVs sell these days, just look at Model Y vs. S sales. They would have been much better served releasing a slightly cheaper Gravity type CUV out the gate and taken the slight hit to ultimate range numbers. That and just getting Android Auto / Apple Car play to work from the get go should be key for any non Tesla auto maker right now.
Whats up with Lucid stocks
The Saudiis must know something that we don't about Lucid when they gave them a $1B lifeline.
Maybe revisit the Fiskar Ocean since they are having a fire sale.
Yeah coz they arent back by anything. Lucid is backed by Saudi PIF fund. Rivian is backed by Amazon and Tesla is Tesla.
sadly but true - will they survive at all?
Next time you're in San Diego you'll see a lot more Lucid around here, people seem to know.
E39 is still the daddy. Not selling mine until I have to.
The F10 is the best gen tbh it’s going on 13 years old and still looks modern
Lucid all the way!
3:40 - BMW idrive 8.5 also has major issues with iPhone connections
Hope they fix that soon…
They should rename prismatic batteries "pouch in a box" cells :) I know it doesn't sound as magical, but it's accurate
It'd have been nice if you'd managed to throw in the EQE into this. They do luxury really well, but missed the boat on software and doing anything even a quarter elegant on the outside.
That´s what I have decided for after testing all of them in the category - the lease of the EQE is half then Lucid or on par with a naked i5, so it was an hard fought but easy decision.
Did either company say why they didn't include a differential? It's technically possible to do that with EVs. Is it cost, complexity?
It’s for sure cost but also efficiency - a differential adds some resistance and nobody wants to loose 2% of range and add 500 bucks to the costs for a feature not even 1% of clients will honor. The Porsche Taycan has one as an extra.
And the top Lotus Eletre R does too. Other that the Audi Etron (& RS)that's it, afaik. @@Helmigurt
Two vehicles for the common man.
I absolutely despise EVs and I would still buy a Lucid simply because it’s done RIGHT.
Sound insulation is often a good indicator of quality. Lots of cars try to wow their customers with flashy crap, but what matters in the end is how it drives and feels.
So we need a Lucid Air built by BMW.
Really hope that the Neue Klasse will give us that, a great electric sport sedan: powerful, agile and efficient.

The only other potential competitor in the RWD EV space will be Porsche with their Cayman EV RWD, IMO.
However, I doubt it will be as mechanical as the Lucid, it may make up though for it on weight distribution (batteries behind the driver) and lightness though.
I would have loved to see the effects of Lucid‘s clever packaging resulting not necessarily in a big car but in the opposite: a sufficiently roomy interior in a car that is as small as possible.
Me too, I bet the batteries need a big footprint though.
Packaging marvels reek of economy cars. As mentioned by the last commenter the battery pack to get big range takes a big car. A couple factors right there.
does BMW have adaptive cruise and lane centering standard on a 60k vehicle yet or is a base model Corrola more technologically advanced still?
Does a base model corrola come with leather seats, adaptive suspension, voice control, HUD, etc? U say that like the bmw doesn't offer many other things standard that the corolla doesn't and u just cherry picked one extra thing u think should be standard. U pay for what u get brotha
@japanwatchconnectionI think we understand that you like you Arteon…
Great that Lucid still has physical switches for v frequent controls that need to be touch no sight.
Another (well-deserved) brick-bat for BMW. I take your point WRT the interior fitments in the Lucid (no cigar for falling short on this score in a vehicle that purports to be a l-u-x-u-r-y sport sedan).
Nevertheless, the Lucid looks much nicer on the outside (the BMW looks like an overweight parody of its ancestors). More importantly, the folks at Lucid seem still to believe that we who buy vehicles might actually be interested in driving them (and having fun while doing so). Heaps of kudos to Lucid for that.
Unfortunately, the BMW will likely sell like hotcakes (a testament to the power of marketing and past legacy), when surely this burgermeister deserves to be shunned for its awful driving dynamics.
I hope Lucid does well with this vehicle--and works out the shortcomings that mar the interior audioscape and the driver-interface.
Thank you for another great review.
PS: "Yobness" (23"02'). Outstanding!
