I was one of those people who became a ‘Taylor Swift fan’ much later in life. Back as a little girl, I kept hearing people getting mocked whenever they brought up Taylor Swift as their favorite artist, and mostly poking fun of her. It was one of the reasons why I tend to hide my musical tastes, even though reality is most people don’t even mind most of the time. So when I first heard of her redoing her older songs to reclaim them back from her old label, I actually had respect for her. And it was wholesome seeing the support and love she was getting from fans as well. I also have learned from my mistakes, and I’m a bit more open with her music these days. But man. These crazy fans need to realize that all these threats merely don’t come without consequences. Some of these teenage girls need their behavior be to be found out by their parents and taught a lesson. Some of these adults really need to take a huge step back, and realize that they are regressing to childish high-school bullying tactics and stop. If they are so willing to give hell to someone else. Are they unaware of how unhinged they look? How are we supposed to take them seriously if their behaving like total degenerates or is it really that they don't care at all & they were just already just awful people to begin with? I'm going to guess that the latter is very likely & that a lot of the toxic fandoms were already filled with bad argumentative people who love the drama & the negativity they claim to reject. I remember coming in dirty with grass and dirt stains or scrapes and bruises just from playing. As woman I thought MeatCanyon's animation was hilarious I like all his stuff & he's gotta great funny personality & you know these Swifties didn't even watch the video before making their threats & calling him an incel.
It's the same with super k-pop stans & other fandoms too. I like a lot of different niche & popular things but the fandoms can be so toxic at times where you start avoiding the online communities all together. These weirdos also remind me why you should never admire someone or something too much that you cross the line into parasocial territory.
I think it's fascinating that seemingly thousands if not millions of adults have some kind kind of online parasocial thing going on with influencers, actors, music artists, or even fictional characters & I don't entirely get it, specifically the full-grown adults having their obsession make up their entire personality/identity aspect of it.
I did learn recently from a psychology channel that there are levels of extremity to it where at the lowest end of the spectrum of parasocial attachment is supposed to be totally fine & possibly even healthy for some individuals. It sounds like just being a huge but regular fan of something where you might like collecting merch but it's not making you a loser yet.
My question is how or at what point did these toxic stans go from being a normal fan to crossing the boundary of threatening others & wanting commit violence on behalf of their fav singer? Are they unaware of how unhinged they look? How are we supposed to take them seriously if their behaving like total degenerates or is it really that they don't care at all & they were just already just awful people to begin with? I'm going to guess that the latter is very likely & that a lot of the toxic fandoms were already filled with bad argumentative people who love the drama & the negativity they claim to reject.
On the other hand sometimes there are nice smaller fan communities that start up here & there where the people in the group just genuinely want to share their admiration & appreciation of something with other like-minded people & they're a gem if you can find them but unfortunately over time that nice or "good" online community can become a toxic one if bad apples join & moderators start abusing their power, it's a whole mess & it just totally ruins it & that's why you start avoiding fandoms all together. I swear this fan toxicity is like a virus that spreads not necessarily to others but to communities although it might encourage a few to become more mean & hateful as well.
