  • In this video I restore an old table. This table is made of oak and pine. This table is over 50 years old. During the restoration of the table, I will show you some techniques in woodworking. How to get rid of holes from old rusty nails and how to straighten bent wood. And we will also replace the old drawers that I will make from beech. I will show you how to connect the drawers. Thanks for watching.

Amazing. The craftsmanship is stellar. Yellow? Not a great finale.

Wasn't sure where the color was going with the paint or stain cause it looked so yellow but that's a mighty fine table sir.

In my own opinion, a more brown stain would have looked much better than the yellow stain, but that's personal preference. Otherwise, great job!

The only thing I prefer about the original table is the stain colour. The new yellow stain broke my heart a little bit 😢

@@WDRestorationThis color is a relieving break from the way-too-often used, shoe-polish blackish brown, staining. Thanks for diverging from the well-traveled path and giving us this refreshing look!

Was of the same mind to begin with. But then I thought colour is often governed by ethnic taste and he is in the Ukraine and if he is onselling, he knows his market. It actually grew on me the more I looked at it. Nicely done job.

I, too, thought that the colour was a bit strange when I first saw it; but It will probably mellow with age and as it is polished.

I have to smile. Admittedly this table top is bowed. But the family kitchen table I ate off at my gt.grandmothers home was worn totally smooth but had so many hollows in it. There was no rot but she put a large folded undercloth on covered by a general cloth when not eating. A white starched damask for proper meals. Everything taken off after mealtimes and bowls, flour, utensils and heavy jars when cooking. It held everything from apples, plums pears from Orchard or huge roasts for family after war. Goodness knows what this man would have done with it. I don't remember anything being straight in her home, but it was a few hundred years old.

Here's a tip for you...when using polyurethane glue it dries faster in the presence of moisture. What to do is wet one side of the joint with a damp cloth and glue the other side. It bonds very quick. I loved your restoration.

It came out very well, and is probably better than new.
Which raises a philosophical question. Even at its best, this was a cheap table originally. Mostly pine, machine made legs, nailed together with little in the way of joinery. You could have duplicated the table with all new everything faster and cheaper, likely with the same results. Unless it was in some way emotionally significant, I don't know that I would have undertaken a restoration.

Agree, this is 20th century production work and probably not worth the effort invested. I admire the demonstrated techniques however. I also think I would have tried to maintain a bit more of the patina if the table was a much-loved old family retainer.

Beautiful work - a really slick gluing technique that I admired very much - congratulations. Though I wasn't looking out for this, I noticed 4 different glues in use, and particularly liked the epoxy gap-filling after straightening the side-piece. Bravo!
I also noticed that, even though the table had some nice decorative and structural touches not found in today's minimalist world, it was nevertheless - with a thin top and nails everywhere including through the top - a very humble and modest one. I think your skills and workshop tools deserve a higher quality item to work on.

Also, put some sort of profile contour on the X brace edges on the bottom. Looks a little distracting in the over all picture. But it's your project and you have to feel ok with what it turned out to be. Was this piece for you or a customer?
