  • "Featuring the two-keyboard, two-guitar, two-drummer, one-bass Grateful Dead lineup, this magnificent, soaring Help/Slip/Franklin's is one of the best of the late-era returns of this trio. In the lineup 1975-1977, 1983-1985, and 1989-1995, this enigmatic addition to the repertoire is one of the most dynamic and ambitious song cycles the Dead ever wrote and performed. From the Summer Tour of 1991 that also featured great shows at Deer Creek, Giants Stadium, Chicago, and Pine Knob, among others, this was the second release in the View From The Vault series." - David Lemieux

The most under-rated stop from Summer 91 was 2-night run at Sandstone in Bonner Springs, KS. with a smokin HelpSlipFrank to open night 1 with a nice Takes A Lot To Laugh, a Supplication Jam between Estimates and UJB, and a sparkling Dew, but it was night 2 when the band really stood up and grew some hair! Solid 1st set mixed in a nice Sugaree/West LA/Candyman 'Turkey' on point and the Music Never Stops 1st set closer was always one of my personal favs. Set II exploded out the gate with a VERY respectable Scarlet/Fire followed by Truckin/Smokestack(I thought this was gonna be my first and only New Speedway ...but no such luck ha!), He's Gone...but the highlight of the run, and for me personally the highlight of the summer was the long slow tease out of Space into Comes A Time...will they bring it?...will they..? Please PLEASE bring it...!? and finally Jerry takes it across the threshold. Comes A Time! One of the most intense moments I ever experienced as the 18K in attendance went into 'hear a pin drop' mode as Jerry poured his heart and soul out all over fly-over country that night. Wow! Then they fire up the turbo thrusters with a GDTRFB before Dr. Bob gives his diagnosis with a set closing Good Lovin! Finally Jer Bear and the boys return to the stage for a BEEEEEEAUTIFUL Baby Blue to close the run. This 2-night scorcher may be the unsung gem of the entire 1990's and is definitely the sleeper of all sleepers in a long list of incredible shows 1991. Would love to see some footage from Sandstone 91 make it's way out of the vault and into the public domain before my time is done here in this 4 dimensional realm called planet Earth. Just sayin' :) :) :)

I saw Phil and friends in like 2002 or something and it was the best night of my life. 20 years later my girlfriend gets me qualiity headphones and I can FINALLY HEAR PHIL ANYTIME I WANT. Changes everything about the Dead, he's like 1/3 of the band dynamic.

That's a great comment. His bass playing is something you really have to listen to for a protracted period of time to appreciate fully. There's still something to be said for a bass player that can lay down a groove using majority pedal tones, but it just wouldn't be the Grateful Dead, though, and you can honestly say that no one plays quite like him.

This trio of songs will never cease to get me out of a negative mindset. I think its magically symbolic, the way it shifts from the contemplative and slightly dark vibe of help into the tumultuous slipknot which always feels like multiple forces kind of battling back and forth, and abruptly into the wave of love that is fanklin's tower. The final act always serves to remind me to let the past be the past, roll away the hardships of yesterday, and allows me to feel grateful in the present moment. Life is beautifully difficult but these 3 songs will always remind me of the good that balances the bad and that sometimes ya just gotta dance your way through the bullshit. Thank you Jerry

This is my absolute FAVORITE linked set of Dead songs. Franklin's Tower changed my life during an acid trip when I was 15. This lovely band helped jump start my mind and love of the guitar and good music.

Was at this show. We drove down from Long Island. Then treked back up afterwards. I mainly remember my pal had an extra mail order ticket. My buddy even offered to walk to the gate with her to prove they were real.

Unapologetically my era of the Dead, firm and fast as they feast on the groove. Art reached a crescendo in the 90's, paved a path directly to a labyrinth of possibilities that we're still trying to resurface from. Still here but missing some finish, got a scrape or two, we wait for someone or something to rehydrate the glue. We all danced together when Jerry played the blues, might find his essence somewhere on TH-cam. Till then, celebrate every memory, every vibe. Show those youngsters how we got along to survive. And ride till the sunsets divide.

The two roller coasters at 17:45 are "Drachen Fire" (Blue) and "Loch Ness Monster" (Yellow) at Busch Garden's Williamsburg in VA. Drachen Fire opened the year after this show and thankfully closed in 1998 for being too rough on the riders. Loch Ness Monster is still open to this day!
