Anyone doing vocals on his songs loses something only his vocals can convey. Never was the blues/ TexMex ever done so expertly on both sides of vocals and his guitar being a separate entity on stage for most but SRV never sacrificed the vocals for the guitar or guitar for the vocals. Too bad Jimi couldn’t of seen SRV cuz he would of been entranced while also being entertained smiling throughout his set. SRV was never trying to copy Jimi but pay tribute while making Jimi’s music an extension of Stevies set but not just some garage band copying their heroes music.

I met SRV in 1984 at Antones on Guadalupe St. in Austin, Texas when he came up to my table during a sound check for Doug Saham. I bought him a beer and we talked for about 30 minutes. Then the year of 1985 his career exploded. I went to his memorial in Austin with Jimmy and His mother, Martha. Then I contributed to his statue on Town Lake/ Lady Bird Lake. His death was the end of the uprising of the blues which started when Eric Clapton started using blues legends as opening acts. I use to play drums for James Cotton of Cotton/Winter fame. What a great I've had playing drums. RIP Mr. Vaughan.

Stevie was one of the greatest blues guitarist ever! I would however like to give a shout out to the drummer who had the greatest talent filling in with Stevies offbeat and his tendency to never play the same song exactly the same so the drummer had the difficult job of keeping on beat. As a bass player that has played in quite a few blues bands over the past 35 years, it never gets old. I dreamed of sitting in with SRV one day...I guess I'll have to wait until I get to the other side. I told my wife not to forget to put my '59 P-Bass in the pine box before they put me in the ground...LOL. Nope, she said...I'm keeping it to remember you by. Fair enough!

SRV was gone before I knew his music, but I lived in Japan during the early 2000's. One of my favorite memories was wandering past the outdoor theater in Ueno on a sunny day in early fall, and hearing the beginning of a loud and well-practiced SRV cover band. Got myself a cold beverage or two and sat down for the show. Not the man himself, but the next best thing.

I can’t imagine him losing his title. He is so rare and there isn’t a single thing anyone could to improve anything. Not one note. Not in feeling or passion or skill - clothing choices - : ) Not - nothing. He is it. WThe only thing anyone else could do if they had this level of magic and skill (Ha!) would be to have fantastic new songs. And everybody (me) would pine even more Stevie. And I’d be back here.
But that person at best would be as good…. Nope that’s just ridiculous. Because it’s all the elements of art and precision and not “playing” but being with his guitar. I can’t explain it.
Not going to happen. Someone great but different will come along but there’s great and then there’s Stevie. I really love this guy. He got me through hundreds of miles driving in the dark during a horrific divorce - my kids grew up singing in the car… I guess his struggles make him so likable - I root for the underdog, but he’s hardly an underdog but for difficulties. So he seems sweet, human, best guitarist in history past , present, future… no - no one will ever come along that would be in his league. Not sure why I even went through that exercise, but the answer never changes. He broke the mold - and some guitar strings in the process. He’s the GOAT. He should get a Medal of Honor or be posthumously Knighted. Nah - hed love to dress up for that though. Oh, what a fun, wonderful being. He had a temper. He just seems so human.

What he does with the guitar seems so effortless. He could go on for hours & never play the same riff twice, it was all new. No one can top him & no one ever will. He had a gift from On High.
