Of course, seeing an acoustic set didn't hurt. (Bird song and Ripple: oh yes!) Radio City is a very cozy venue with great acoustics and amazingly detailed walls and ceiling. Just looking around was a trip. We were in the front of the balcony and it felt like we were right on top of the band. One interesting anecdote was a few months after the shows, I read about a U2 concert hosted by Radio City in the same time period as the Dead's run. An attendee got up and started to dance in the aisle and security immediately went over and warned him either to sit back down or get kicked out. At the Dead shows, not a single person was sitting if the music was playing, and the aisles were filled with people dancing. The security didn't know what to do. They had never seen anything like it. Just goes to prove the old statement. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead Concert!.
I remember seeing many of the security guards at Radio City dancing, albeit mildly, throughout these shows. Radio City Music Hall was indeed a very special run of shows. The entire experience was magical. From camping out for two days on the sidewalks outside the ticket hall (the line of people waiting for tickets to go on sale was several blocks long), to learning that they added two shows so now we could get four tickets each (instead of only two, if I remember correctly), to being given 'numbers' so we could meander about without losing our place in line ... ... then seeing / hearing / being part of the shows at that marvelous venue filled with its own wondrous charm ... ... then the train rides home each night listening to folks playing their newly recorded cassette tapes ... ... pure magic.
I understand. For me, this music holds my attention because it is so authentic, so raw, and utterly sublime. Their commitment to play what was alive in the moment is what keeps it alive now. Take, for example, this video. It is clear that the canned, automatic thing to do would have been to go into drums. Jerry, however, stayed true to the moment and played Terrapin. Just wonderful!

This is one of my very favorites of all time then again I think in 1989 when they did this same set plus some others that Brent got into ! Jerry was so happy that he was dancing around for as much as he ever moved ! Love so much being there for a week at 2 different hotels ! Jammed out Terrapin. That's something you don't see every day. Starting to think this was their best year or even show. The playing is so tight and Brent is so well integrated after what? A year and a half? And that's being generous. It's hard to be well integrated into ANY band after a year and a half but the guy was an MVP. I see people criticize all other years of their tour, and all other members (for whatever reason, too much this or not enough that). Never see any hate for Brent. Food for thought idk lol. Obviously everyone's on at this show (and at pretty much every GD show at some point), Brent is just one integral cog here.

Going to a run of shows you never knew what you were going to hear from one night to the next, but Estimated is one I always waited for. The odd timing, a couple of spots for Garcia to really soar if it was a good night, the changes of pace throughout, and the great low light outro jam. A friend of mine once said that when he’s old and shaky, he hoped his shake would be to the rhythm of this jam :) We’re not quite there yet, but we’re getting closer. I hope you’re doing well, Redman.
the Redman you’re talking about is likely my grandfather on my mothers side. he has been deceased for a couple years now. his real name was rodger hinkle and he was from kentucky.
Wow, that was pot back in 1980 which is unusual. 2023 pot which is legal in many state is supposedly stronger with all the modern technology than it was back on 1980 when this Dead show was filmed
Their best improvisations came imo during the period of Mickey's sabbatical. Nothing against micky or the telepathic polyrythmic glory that came with two drummers but in the mid seventies when it was just billy you hear some righteous space jams since he could speed up or slow down the tempo at will or even drop out of the jam all together. Two drummers would lock them in to a tempo that was hard to change on the fly. I guess their telepathy only took them so far. Still some amazing jams in their own right- I love the drums on scarlet-fire segues for example- came from the excellent chemistry of Billy and micky. And mickey was needed early on as he was the only musician in the band capable of keeping consistent time. At their heart the dead are a garage band and most didn't master their instruments until already in the band.

I know where to go
California, preaching on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know, I'm gonna shine
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
Still I know I lead the way, they tell me where I go
Don't worry about me, nah, nah, nah
Don't worry about me, no
And I'm in no hurry, nah, nah, nah
I know where to go
California, a prophet on the burning shore
California, I'll be knocking on the golden door
Like an angel, standing in a shaft of light
Rising up to paradise, I know I'm gonna shine
You've all been asleep, you would not believe me
Them voices tellin' me, you will soon receive me
Standin' on the beach, the sea will part before me
Fire wheel burning in the air
You will follow me and we will ride to glory
Way up, the middle of the air
And I'll call down thunder and speak the same
And my work fills the sky with flame
And might and glory gonna be my name
And men gonna light my way
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
It's gonna be just like they say, them voices tell me so
Seems so long I felt this way and time sure passin' slow
My time coming, any day, don't worry about me, no
Don't worry about me, nah, nah, nah
Don't worry about me, no
And I'm in no hurry, nah, nah, nah
I know where to go
I love to read the lyrics along with song !
U can’t always tell what they r singing sometimes unless u have a photographic memory in ur head !
About half way thru Terrapin Phil gets turned UP!, Suddenly my car started to Vibrate.
Lucky it didn't explode
You're car got Philbombed😂
This is one of my very favorites of all time then again I think in 1989 when they did this same set plus some others that Brent got into ! Jerry was so happy that he was dancing around for as much as he ever moved ! Love so much being there for a week at 2 different hotels ! Brent overdid something in 1 of the hotels so we were all asked to leave but the hotel we went to was so much better + the rooms were bigger ! ❤️🐇🐰🥀🩵👽🪐🛸🚀💜☠️💀🌹👻💖💕🐊🧚♀️🧚🏿♂️🧚🏼🧜🧜♂️🧜♀️😘🥰😍
Only Got to see Jerry perform 5 times before he passed in 95’
5 is better than 1😂❤
I sqeezed in 22 shows from 90 to 94 I had a loose schedule at the time but damn do I miss it
This is a really good estimated prophet.
Brent is when first Althea was played
Right?! Still the grateful band we. Love
classic & timeless=]
Good morning to u y’all I’m back again because we were there for a week with them ! It was great ! Of course ?
This is something very special...

There sound is always crisp and clear no matter what year it was
This is truly amazing shit ❤️✌️
Jerry came looking for me after I hadn’t shown up for a couple years , he said he was missing me ! ❤️❤️❤️🐰🐇🌹🌹🌹🌹👽🛸🪐👻😍😘🥰🎼🎹 if Jerry cared to take care of himself he mite still b alive but I think he was tired of being called a god but also just tired ! They toured more then any other band in the world ! Almost never any time off !
Agreed. That one stole my face🫠no band can go that deep. That was single organism Dead..
We’ll surprise , I’m back more for this special show that is so great to me ! ❤️🐇🐰☮️🧜♀️🧜♂️🧜🥰😍😘👽🪐🛸🚀💥🔥☄️🩵💙❤️💜🩷😇love Jerry as long as I live ! I surely hope to b with him when I die ! 👻
...i used to meet guys like the one in this song on the streets of eugene, in '71.
WhenBobby + my niece saw eachother it was love at 1st site !
I liked the coked up shows from the 80's
No doubt not to mention it wasn't played very often so if u saw that which my lucky cousin did it had to be so special
Wow it never gets 🎉better.
Like I said before I keep going back to this ! ❤️🐇🐰🌹👽🪐🛸👻🍄🥳☮️🦋💛💙🧡💚💗fly away to California !
Since 1975 @ 10, we used to smash ice cream cones into our foreheads, on the school bus till 1980 then Furthur. Ride and don't look back.......
I'm 60. And I'm still walking so I know that I can 💃DANCE
the Redman you’re talking about is likely my grandfather on my mothers side. he has been deceased for a couple years now. his real name was rodger hinkle and he was from kentucky.
Saw 1st Terrapin at Swing
Was a good show and I only went to 5.
They had pot that kicked me in ! I thought it must of been mixed with something but no it wasn’t ! Just good !😅😂🤣🌹❤️🐇🐰
Wow, that was pot back in 1980 which is unusual. 2023 pot which is legal in many state is supposedly stronger with all the modern technology than it was back on 1980 when this Dead show was filmed
I know u rite about that but I never smoked much pot , I rather eat it in something cooked !
my time's comin any day
flip nice
Whenever anyone tries to make fun of the Dead by asking what any band would need TWO drummers, show them this Terrapin.
This is one of my favorites besides Mr. Fantasy + Hey Jude ! ❤️🐰🐇🌹🧜♀️🧜♂️🧜🧚♀️🧚🏿♂️🧚🏼🧞♂️🧞🧞♀️🙏🏻😵💫☠️💀😍🥰😘🥳☄️🌈
